Spring 2019 ADC Lab 5 Version 1.0

Introduction
The purpose of this lab is to enable the students to simulate a simple amplitude modulator and
envelop detector and implement it on hardware using discrete components.

Course Learning Outcomes

CLO1: Perform hardware experiments for Analog modulation/ demodulation techniques as
well as sampling of Analog signals.
CLO2: Develop software simulations to observe the performance of communications
systems
CLO3: Report desired results proofs and calculations.

Figure 2: Circuit 2 – Single transistor AM Modulator with Envelop Detector using Active filter

Spring 2019 ADC Lab 5 Version 1.0

Task 1 – Simulation
 Implement the given circuit 1 on PSPICE (or Proteus)
 Observe the signal at different nodes to understand the working of the circuit.
 Then implement circuit 2 in which the simple RC filter of circuit 1 has been replaced
with an Active low-pass filter. Note that there is also a coupling capacitor at the
output to remove the DC content of the demodulated signal.
 In you report, you must divide the circuit into different blocks and explain the
function and working of each.
 Add a coupling capacitor and load resistor at the output of circuit 1 and explain why it
doesn’t work properly?

Task 2 – Hardware
 Implement circuit 2 on hardware. Note that there is one function generator per
workstation, which should be used to generate carrier signal. Trainer can be used for
the message signal input.
 Record the values of voltages and currents, and copy/save the oscilloscope outputs at
different nodes for your report.
 Show both the simulation and hardware outputs to the instructor.

Report (To be submitted by 12:30 PM on Friday 1 March 2019)

Your report should contain:
Introduction:
A summary of Amplitude Modulation and Demodulation
Procedure:
Function and working of both circuits
Actual values of components used.
Results and Discussion:
Simulation and hardware outputs
Comparison of circuit 1 and 2 with advantages and disadvantages of both
Conclusion
