Overview & How to use this Starter

At #Tech4Good, our mission is to help NGOs & Changemakers use technology as a force
multiplier to deliver meaningful impact at scale and become more sustainable.

Leverage up to 150K USD/year worth of world

class free/discounted technology!

We help NGOs use technology as a Force multiplier to

● run their programs at scale and efficiently
● serve their stakeholders effortlessly
● measure impact like never before
● raise funds smartly

How to use this #Tech4Good Starter Pack?

You have reached here because you filled out our Organisation Technology Maturity Model
(OTMM) Self assessment form. We created the OTMM Self assessment to help you with a
structured way to understand how your mission stands with respect to technology readiness
across 4 Modules - Impact Measurement, Delivering Impact at Scale, Fundraising and Day to
Day operations. Without knowing where we stand, we cannot plan where we want to be.

The Maturity Levels are measured by the achievement of the specific and generic goals that
apply to each module - Fundraising, Impact Measurement, Impact @ Scale, Day to day ops.

2

Level 1  Zero or very minimum digitization being used. Not confident about how to
leverage technology.

Level 2  Aware of some technology solutions and have implemented them at the basic
level but need capacity to go to the next level and get results from them

Level 3  Starting to implement solutions at an Advanced level through self help and
learning to implement

Level 4  Constantly improving on the implemented systems and fine tuning them with
automation to continue getting great results.

In the next sections, You will find your OTMM answers documented for your reference. We
added some insights t hrough the different sections. We have recommended some chosen
free/discounted P
roduct recommendations from our master handbook for you and links with
details on how to use them. In the annexure, you will find a key to compare your answers and
find out which Level your organization is in on the basis of OTMM Levels. This levelling will help
you pick up the next set of technology and ideas for your mission.

We have put together L

evel Ups f or each of the 4 modules which will help you with
recommendations on moving from one level the next.

How to get help from the Community if you get stuck with implementing the ideas
recommended

There is nothing better than implementing by yourself. But we all need some help sometime. We
are building a vibrant online community with people like you who are trying to self implement the
ideas that are recommended, coaches and experts in various tools, and more. We recommend
joining this group and posting your questions there, and also helping others with what you have
learnt :) Join today

About your Organisation:

1. Does the organisation have a valid FCRA Registration? No

📝 A few tools from our curated list of Free/Discounted Products require a valid FCRA
registration to access the discount/donation. Eg: G oogle For Nonprofits, S
 lack, Microsoft
Products

If you don’t have an FCRA, We have tried best to give you product recommendations that
don’t need a valid FCRA

📌 Enroll into Nasscom’s BigTech Software Donation Programme

If you have a valid FCRA, please enroll your Organization into the BigTech Validation
programme. This is used by software donors to validate that you are a registered non
profit. It takes about 4-5 Days for your organization to be verified on BigTech. Once
verified - you will receive a validation token which can then be used to access other
software donations or buy software at discounted prices within bigtech. C lick here for
details on how to Enroll

3. Domains covered by your work:

● Criminal Justice System
● Human Rights & Activism

4. Number of Dedicated Team Members in the IT team:

● None

5. Dedicated budget for the IT Team: N

 o budget

📝 In our conversations with NGOs, we have realised that most of the time nonprofits do
not have dedicated IT resources (both human resource and budgets) to implement
technology at their mission. And even if there is a resource, there is very little capacity
building opportunities or peer networks available to the IT resources.

Our online master handbook provides a master list of free/discounted products that can be
implemented by your IT resource person. They can also join our online community of
tech4good enthusiasts from across the country and share ideas with them.

4

Fundraising Module

This section will help us understand different fundraising components at your org
6. Total Annual Donations raised in the last 12 Months? Less thank 25 lakhs

7. How do your donors, supporters, volunteers discover you?

● Word of mouth, Friends
● Email Groups, Lists
📝 “Being Discovered” by supporters, donors, beneficiaries is a problem for NGOs in India.
Many of the small and growing NGOs still rely on work of mouth and friends to spread
message about their work. Very few have a website that can be easily found using a google
search.

📌 Website

First step is to being discovered is having a simple yet structured website that talks about
the important work you are doing. Once you have a website - search engines like google
will automatically take note of your site and your website will start appearing in search
results after some time. Isn’t that great? So you make the website and the internet takes
care of the rest.

A simple way to set up your website using Wordpress (Highly recommended as its
configurable. You can start with a basic layout and then keep adding layers)

📌 Email, Social Media & Search Marketing

Once you have a website. It’s time to make sure that you are driving traffic to the site.
Apart from your site coming up on search, there are other tactics like Email, and Social
media marketing using popular social media platforms that can help you get discovered
by more and more people.

5

Some tools you should check out

- Many NGOs we met were using bcc on email to send out mass emails. Most Email
providers like Gmail, Hotmail mark these emails as spam after sometime. We
recommend that instead of misusing bcc you use TinyLetter which a simple mass
email tool if you are a small NGO with less than 5000 supporters looking for a free
engagement tool. It’s the simplest way to

- YouTube for Nonprofits - Using Video to communicate with your supporters is very
effective. You can use your mobile to take a simple video of the wonderful work
you are doing, edit it using youtube’s inbuilt video editor, add some music and start
sharing with the world! (Needs FCRA for certain features, but Basic Youtube is free
for all)

- Google AdWords Grant worth 10,000 USD per month (requires FCRA) - Nowadays,
Google is where people search for how to help, where to volunteer and what to
donate to. Wouldnt it be great if your own ad can appear on Google at the very
moment someone is looking for organisations like yours. A well-timed ad can turn
people into valuable supporters. See image below of google showing me an
Adwords Grant Ad when i searched for "help children india" on google search.

6

8. How can people donate?

● Donors can give one time donations by cash, cheque, bank transfer
📌 Online Payments are the easiest way for your valuable donors to support you

Just having a website and promoting it is not useful unless you can make your website
visitors to take a meaningful action from your website. For a Supporter, the best way to
contribute to your mission is to support your financially. Shouldn’t we make it easy for
them?

The moment we talk about online payments, NGOs are worried as they think it will involve
some high tech coding work! We recommend that you use simple tools like Instamojo
that can help you sell merchandise, receive donations, manage payments, send out
receipts, and more. You can set it up in a few days and dont need any coding or
technology experience! Check out this c ase study on how CARE uses Instamojo

9. Which of the following is true about compliance around donations received?

● Receipts are handwritten manually on printed invoice/receipt books and sent via post to
the donor or given in person

10. Donor Details Database

● A Physical Register Book/Papers
● Excel Sheets

11. Donor Engagement

● No Engagement with Donors after donation recevied
📌 Creating a journey for your Donors is crucial to building your support base

7

Though we know its important to keep our donors engaged, it is not easy to implement
it in practise. From sending out frequent emails to them with progress of work, or
reaching out to them at the right time for an additional donation to a new programme,
sending them their 80G receipts automatically - every NGO needs a simple donor
management tool. We recommend Salesforce NonProfit Success Pack for this. Over
30,000 nonprofit organizations use Salesforce to drive greater impact by connecting
everything they do. And it’s FREE for upto 10 Staff users which is everything that a small
and growing NGO needs!

Impact Measurement Module: This section covers how you measure the impact of the
work you do.

📌 Visualize your collected data for actionable Insights

Visualisation. Compared to other data analysis tools - Tableau is easy to learn for your
Monitoring and Evaluation Staff and free for nonprofits.
