CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

There a lots of business and entrepreneurs in the Philippines however not

all stand out. Some entrepreneur are taking action in the planning and operation

process to more competitive in the market (Powerpinoys, 2018).

Nowadays many business are rapidly had to adapt to entirely new

marketing channels, decide how to invest in and utilize new technologies, and

compete on a global stage things that were barely imaginable to our parents’

and grandparents’ generations. Using a meaningful set of

rounded performance indicators that provide the business with insights about

how well it is performing is key. Most business people we know are not experts

in how to develop KPIs, how to avoid the key pitfalls and how to best

communicate metrics so that they inform decision-making. In most cases

companies rely on overly simple finance indicators that just clog up the

corporate reporting channels (Hiscox, 2016).

Wholesale and retail trade dominates the economy in terms of the

number of establishments. The Philippines had a total of 225,244

establishments in the formal sector in 2013, higher by 51.9 percent compared

to 148,266 recorded establishments in 2010. This can be translated into an

average increase of 25,660 establishments per year for the 3-year period

(ASPBI, 2013).

Having a POS system in place can help you to split a check with just one

click, no issues at all. In addition, a POS system allows you to send receipts via

email and automatically manage all of the receipts. Which, in turn, reduces the
time spent by store staff in compiling and archiving stacks of receipts. A POS

system can also greatly enhance your customer service management, by

collecting customer data and tracking their previous transactions. When your

sales staff enter the customers’ name, they can quickly call up their entire

purchase history and their email address. With this type of feature, business

owners will know who their best customers are and what type of products they

frequently buy. This information can also be utilized to develop a customer

loyalty program and send special offers related to their favorite products. By

having a POS system in place, you can understand your customers better and

boost your sales significantly (Shabrina, 2018).

Project context

Entrepreneurs are often visionaries, which is great for creating a

company. However, after the initial challenge of opening a store, many

company founders look toward the next big step. Without clear direction and

involvement from the company leader(s), a wholesale retail store can soon go

off course. Like anything else, a company requires careful maintenance of day

to day operations to remain at peak performance. In business, finances are a

often a paradox it takes money to make money. While some companies are

able to start-up with little capital, they often reach a point where they need

additional financing to continue operations. Without those funds available, they

are unable to meet their day-to-day expenses. Securing access to capital

before the company needs it is often the difference between success and

insolvency (WAKSMAN, 2018).

Figure 1 Number of Businesses

Figure 1 shows that more than two in every five establishments in 2013

are engaged in Wholesale and Retail Trade; Repair of Motor Vehicles and

Motorcycles with 99,614 establishments or 44.2 percent of the

total. Accommodation and Food Service Activities accounted for 12.5 percent

of the total number of establishments in 2013 with 28,188 establishments. This

was followed by Manufacturing 25,149 and Education 13,999 with 11.2 percent

and 6.2 percent shares of the total, respectively. These top four sectors

comprised 74.1 percent of the total establishments in 2013. On the other hand,

Electricity, Gas, Steam and Air-Conditioning Supply; and Mining and Quarrying

sectors, each with 253 establishments, numbered the least sharing 0.1 percent

share each of the total (ASPBI, 2013).

Inventory software programs now on the market let you track usage,

monitor changes in unit dollar costs, calculate when you need to reorder, and

analyze inventory levels on an item-by-item basis. You can even control

inventory right at the cash register with point-of-sale software systems. POS

software records each sale when it happens, so your inventory records are
always up-to-date. Better still, you get much more information about the sale

than you could gather with a manual system. By running reports based on this

information, you can make better decisions about ordering and merchandising

(Entrepreneur Media, 2018).

Some of the business establishment are facing problem of computing all

sales and gathering data on what items are in demand. Business owners spend

more time on calculating and doing reports due to a lot of incoming paper task.

Business owners must know what items are in demand but due to lack of time

they can’t manage the business well. This problem occurs in some business

establishment and the researcher look for forward to resolve this problem.

By developing a system that can help to some business owners to

resolve their problem which is the Point-of-Sale system. Point-of-sale has

known for its efficiency to use in terms of selling product. The researcher made

an idea to explore more about the system and add some more option. Adding

some useful option such as investigating data can help to make the production

in some businesses.

Objectives

The main objective of the study is to develop a system for the

entrepreneurs that will investigate items that having a high demand and sales.
The specific objective is as follows:

1. Develop a client application that record and manages the following

a. Stock inventory.
b. Movement of stock
c. Inventory Reports
2. Develop an android base point of sale system handling deliveries and
inventories.
3. Develop a more accurate costing of a certain product.

Conceptual Framework

The Conceptual Framework is set as an outline on how the researchers

conducted and build the project. It also set as a guid

The researcher explain the flow of the system by using a conceptual

framework. The user gives a command in the application but the user must
login first in the application. Application can do a task that given by the user.
System can update items and price regularly.e for the researchers to stay on
the track and to easily analyze the project.

In the Point-of-sales system, the employee receive orders and payment

from the customer, manually computes for the order cost and recording the

order information on a daily sales record.

Reporting can happen every after of the transaction wherein data

investigation occurs. Data investigation can monitor all items that has a high

demand in sales in the system. All items that being transact can be print using

the portable thermal printer. Bluetooth connection is needed to communicate

the system and the printer.

The figure 2 represents everything on how the researchers followed step

by step process. The system are manageable by an admin and can access all

the data. Admin can also input and update all the data that has given to the

system. The Manual Inventory and Stocks Recording, the admin records the

Item Information and Stocks values and creating a printed report of all the

records in a record sheet.

Project purpose

The researcher’s developed a software for retail businesses. A

retail point of sale system typically includes a cash register (which in recent
times comprises a computer, monitor, cash drawer, receipt printer, customer
display and a barcode scanner).

POS software records each sale when it happens, so your inventory

records are always up to date. Better still, you get much more information about
the sale than you could gather with a manual system. By running reports based
on this information, you can make better decisions about ordering and
merchandising.

Point-of-Sale systems generally offer a variety of ways to keep track of

pricing, including add-on amounts, percentage of cost, margin percentage and
custom formulas. For example, if you provide volume discounts, you can set up
multiple prices for each item. Updating product information. Once a sale is
entered, these systems automatically update inventory and accounts
receivable records. Sales tracking options. Different businesses get paid in
different ways. For example, repair or service shops often keep invoices open
until the work is completed, so they need a system that allows them to put sales
on hold. If you sell expensive goods and allow installment purchases, you might
appreciate a loan calculator that tabulates monthly payments. And if you offer
rent-to-own items, you'll want a system that can handle rentals as well as sales.
Security. In retail, it's important to keep tight control over cash receipts to
prevent theft. Most of these systems provide audit trails so you can trace any
problems. Taxes. Many POS systems can support numerous tax rates-useful if
you run a mail order business and need to deal with taxes for more than one
state (Entrepreneur Media, 2018).

The software to be develop will benefit the business owner, store staffs
and the customers. The system will provide module for specific needs of the
users like for example storekeeper can get information on the availability of
stock, cashier can easily report total sales for a day and the business owner
can easily check the check the business operations.
Business Owners

Business owners around the world are always looking forward on how

their job become easier and hassle free. In this world wherein technology is so

advance, device that can makes a lot of work easy are now in demand.

Business owners that having a delivery can only now have a Point-of-Sale that

remains only in the store but now they can hanlde it in pouch. They can easily

install it in android phone and manage the delivery so smooth.

Community

Every city has a community. Every community has a business

establishment. Some of the business establishment has a delivery system. This

is also the main reason the researcher focus on developing this application.

The researchers wants to make the everyday lives of business owners relax

and easy.

Future Researcher

For the future researcher, this project show that Point-of-Sale system

can also investigate the market trend in a single day. The system also

generates a report and can also print out the sales. With the use of this

research, it can help the future researcher to give an idea of what they can

improve and create through the process data investigation

Scope and Limitation

Development of a Point-of-Sale system that investigate the data which

is trend in the market would require the different module that is significant for

the result of the study.

Scope of the Study

The system is a web based and application type that covers the major

processes in the entrepreneur, it specialist, and future researcher. The project

has four modules:

Security

The system has a capability to secure and retrieve a password of

admin/user if he/she remembered their pin code.

Inventory

The system has a capability to easy to inventory the all product in the

Storage room.

Generation of report

The system has a capability to accurate generation of reports

File Maintenance

The system includes file maintenance that would automatically add,

delete, save, Update, and retrieve information of files. To be able to know the

remaining stocks. To be able to know what items/products are fast moving? To

be able to know what are the items are going to pull out for slow moving. To be

able to know how much items are already sold. To be able to know what product

are in critical stage.

The whole point of having a point of sale system is that it allows you to

connect a single register to a larger network of information that would otherwise

be unavailable or inconvenient to access.

Limitation of the Study

In this phase, the researcher shows and explain what will be the

limitation of the project. Knowing all process may not applicable in others.

Device

Device is on of the most establishment but not all are able to use. The

project will run only on all android devices. System must be use in a device

that runs the operating system of Android.

Printing

In terms of printing receipts, the limitation of process of printing is per

customers only. It cannot do a multitasking of printing. The system can only

make a single printing.

Data Investigation

The researcher made the system to investigate only the sale of the

business. The system can only generates report on market trend every

transaction.
CHAPTER II

RELATED LITERATURE

Mobile Phone

The mobile phone might be the world’s most present device, and yet the

marketing community is just beginning to understand how mobile can and

should factor into their overall strategies. Nine out of ten people on the planet

own one a higher percentage than cars, radios, or television sets and nearly

500 million smart phones shipped last year alone. We know what percentage

of Brazilian twenty something use their smart phones in restaurants (71%) and

how many Saudi women have ever used theirs to shop online (19%). We can’t

live without apps, maps, and email on the go. Why does the ringing of mobile

phones trigger the same brain waves as love, for example? And why do we feel

them vibrating even when they’re missing? What do these devices mean to us

that they make us lovesick? Remarkably, no one had thought to ask about how

and why mobility is enabling us to create meaning in our lives. It turns out

neuroscience can explain both our Pavlov devotion and phantom buzzing, but

as marketers seek to connect with their increasingly mobile customers, it’s hard

to tell emotionally deep stories about brands in the mobile space unless we

understand the full of the mobile space itself. As we discussed the mobile space

with countless creative directors and strategic planners, we found the current

attitude to be that the mobile screen is too small for creating immersive brand

experiences. We had a feeling that there was a lot more to this story, so we

decided to explore the deeper meaning of mobile in the same way that a

strategic planner would approach the task of unlocking the meaning of the

Cheeto we hired an anthropologist to interview dozens of ordinary mobile

device owners and observe them as they interacted with their smart phones.

The first thing we found is that the phone’s pocket size is anything but a flaw in

fact, it’s the key to understanding what it really means (Jesse Haines, 2018).

which power is supplied to the mobile terminal, and a connecting recess to

which the second display section is connected.

Where in an inside of the docking station is configured such that the

docking station interworks with the mobile terminal via a wired communication

or a wireless communication so that payment processing is performed, where

in the first display section is separable connected to the docking station, where

in the second display section is separable connected to the docking station,

where in the first display section and the second display section are facing

opposite direction, wherein the second display section displays a receipt that is

issued when the payment processing is performed via the mobile terminal,

outputs various types of advertisement, and acts as a signature pad on which

a person who pays is to sign, wherein the docking station further comprises a

on the hinge plate, and a support fitted into a receiving member of the mounting

Ease of implementation - Merchants only need a smartphone to get started.

MPOS vendors provide the card reader, associated software and payment

processing services in a turnkey fashion. There is no need for any wired a street

side restaurant owner keeps money received from a customer in Mumbai

infrastructure, keeping costs and barriers to entry low. And since most mPOS

providers charge either a flat fee per transaction, the typical mPOS business

model is a perfect fit for entry-level merchants with lower transaction volumes.

Stronger security - Because emerging market countries already typically use

EMV cards either chip and PIN or chip and sign, mPOS payments within these
countries are highly secure. Transactions are encrypted end to end, and the

terminal/reader itself is an EMV approved unit that can’t be opened without

erasing its data. No card data is ever stored on the reader, dramatically

reducing the risk of data breaches. And of course, mPOS eliminates the need

for merchants to handle or carry large sums of cash, thus reducing risk of theft.

Improved efficiency and record keeping. Besides readers and core payments

functionality, mPOS solutions often feature apps that merchants can use to

support other business processes. For example, the overall mPOS solution

might include apps for building quotes or creating contracts, and links to product

information or customer records. The data collected and stored helps create a

better customer experience and also streamlines bookkeeping.

Helps merchants accommodate growing transaction volumes. While

many emerging markets merchants operate at low transaction volume, the

hope of course is that they will grow. The more advanced mPOS solutions can

accommodate a wide range of merchant sizes, and can scale to meet a

merchant’s growing business needs. In emerging markets, mPOS fits distinct

needs. Economies feature many small shops looking to accept credit card

payments to grow their businesses, sales forces tend to be mobile already, and

consumers and merchants alike are already comfortable in the mobile studies.

An mPOS can act as a lubricant and economic accelerator in these economies,

and will play a key role in the development of these emerging markets (Guérin,

2018).

Whether you are a single location, independent operator or a large chain,

mobile POS can provide a substantial return on investment for your business.

From smooth order processing to improve order accuracy and increase the
sales, increasing in efficiency and profitability can be gained throughout your

food service operations. A mobile POS solution will also enable wait staff to

process payments tableside via a credit card reader attached to the mobile

device. One of key advantages of utilizing a mobile POS solution is efficient in

the order taking process. Through a mobile device, staff can take an order at

the table and wirelessly transmit it to the kitchen in real-time. There is no need

to wait for the server to return to the stationary POS system to enter the order,

as they can now instantly enter the order while at the table. This allows food

preparation to begin earlier, improving customer service by reducing wait times

for items ordered. In many restaurant environments, there are a variety of ways

food can be prepared; add on items, special requests, sides or other

modifications are common requests that the staff must accurately account for

in the order taking process. By entering orders tableside in real-time as the

customer communicates the order, the staff will get the order accurately by

eliminating or reducing lost, partial and incorrect orders. This not only reduces

food waste for your establishment but also improves customer satisfaction.

Good customer service is essential to ensure repeat business from your

patrons.

A mobile POS solution will give the staff an ability to spend more time

with the patrons, improving customer service and enhancing the dining

experience. It will also give servers extra time to up-sell and cross-sell profitable

extras like drinks, appetizers, side dish and desserts. This will not only result in

larger average ticket size for the restaurant but also bigger tips for the staff. In

high volume restaurant environments, the ability to serve more patrons faster

and increase table turnover is critical to success. Many restaurants struggle

with customer wait times on a daily basis and especially on weekends when

most customers prefer to enjoy a night out to dinner. As busy restaurants look

for new ways to increase capacity, many have decided to add outdoor seating

as an option for serving more customers. Unfortunately, the traditional

stationary POS system is not ideal for unpleasant, outdoor environments.

Therefore, many establishments with outdoor seating require the staff to use a

terminal inside the restaurant which is often a less than optimal solution for

efficient order entry and checkout procedures. Mobile POS is an ideal and more

affordable option for growing restaurants that need to equip additional staff to

process more orders as mobile devices are traditionally less expensive than

adding a stationary POS system. Finally, an added positive of mobile POS

solutions is the last step of a customer’s experience: the checkout. This is the

last thing a customer will remember about your restaurant. They enjoyed your

delicious food and the friendly staff, don’t allow that to be ruined by a long wait

at the register. A mobile POS solution will allow staff too securely and efficiently

process payments tableside, avoiding the potential for annoying the customer

in the checkout process. For Intelligent manager that are looking to reduce

customer wait time and food waste, increase average ticket size and expedite

customer checkout, implementing a mobile POS solution will not only improve

the profitability of your business but also the overall customer experience.

Mobile POS provides a number of advantages for the staff, customer, and

restaurant owner (TouchDynamicInc, 2018).

The International Telecommunications Union explains that mobile

broadband has become the “fastest growing technology in human history.” The

unknown speed and availability of mobile networks is driving consumer demand

for a new class of travel experiences. Travelers expect to wait less, carry less

cash and fewer credit cards and paper receipts, and quickly and easily share

positive experiences with their networks. Mobile POS enables hotel guests to

order drinks by the pool, at the moment they decide they want one, without

waiting in line; it enables an extreme sports operator to charge guests on the

beach or in the desert without having to scan their credit cards using a mobile

wallet instead or issuing a paper receipt by emailing it directly to their inboxes.

The future of mobile point of sale, which we discussed in this blog post,

is here now. Mobile POS is revolutionizing the industry by enabling merchants

to be more flexible. Travel businesses can support additional payment methods

for customers who prefer not to use a credit card. It is easy and affordable to

have a good mobile payment app combined with the mPOS to allow additional

types of mobile payments, like email request for payment, which is offered with

mswipe. Travel businesses can greatly increase revenues and improve

customer satisfaction by adopting this revolutionary payment technology

(Feinstein, 2018)

What is mobile POS

A mobile POS means you can operate your POS software from a

Windows-based or iPod tablet allowing your staff to interact with customers,

wherever they are in store. Prospective customers will often simply walk out if

certain decision-making information isn’t presented to them at the product

display area and they feel hesitant to approach the counter to ask a question.

Show rooming is also a common problem for many retailers, with customers

browsing products in store then purchasing from an online retailer. Why not
intercept the process and proactively engage the customer, armed with all the

information in your POS system to facilitate the sale?

Searching inventory and pricing easily - Being able to pull up product

information and pricing details efficiently whilst interacting with the customer is

invaluable in providing a great shopping experience. It also enables you to close

the sale with tempting offers that won’t undermine your bottom line.

Selling via pop up stores - If you sell at trade shows, car park sales or

markets or plan to hold pop-up stores, a mobile POS system is your ideal

solution. Stock levels are adjusted in real-time between your permanent store

and any temporary ones, giving you a clear idea of what you have to offer at

any one time.

Rewarding loyal customers - Capturing customers’ information is easy

and accurate when they can see your device screen and correct any would-be

errors. Use your built in loyalty program to record these details, then keep track

of individual preferences to send customers personalized offers, product

suggestions and tailored email marketing (RetailExpressInc, 2018)

It’s not just older establishments that are sticking with wired POS – many

industries, from retail to hospitality, still rely on a wired system. As up-to-date

and high-tech as wireless and mobile POS may be, there’s room for error in

both installation and activation, and many businesses are wary about taking

that chance especially if customers may be lost as a result of a downed system.

(Wagner, 2016)

The Federal Reserve has published a report that asserts that security

concerns present the main reason why consumers remain hesitant, when
considering mobile POS. Therefore, when it comes to credit cards, consumers

still prefer traditional, stationary point-of-sale systems over mobile point of sale

alternatives. iPod s break easily in busy environments. You’ll have to spend

additional money to insure them or buy cases. An iPod s also represents a

desirable item and therefore runs the risk of theft, which substantially elevates

the risk of losing confidential company data, not to mention sensitive customer

information. Mobile devices are far easier to misplace than a stationary POS

system, increasing the risk of theft even further. Imagine sales staff misplacing

them in a large department store. While it may be easy to replace these, one

should not underestimate compromising customer information, which can have

costly consequences for businesses. Aside from brand damage to a business,

there are cost estimates ranging from $150 to $250 per stolen credit card! You

no longer have someone, who can come and fix it, when it breaks on a Friday

night.

Most likely the cost of fixing an iPod will be the equivalent of just buying

a new one. Many traditional point of sale systems have modules that the

technician can easily exchange. Software is an ongoing project. New hardware,

new standards, new technologies or worse – bugs, all require software updates.

iPod point of sale apps have to get approved by Apple before they become

available to users. Few iPod apps can do complex things like splitting a check,

or VAT, or run without the internet. They will quickly pollute the market with

flunky solutions and therefore give the product niche a bad name as well as

obscure the companies that actually do a decent job. Poor customer retention

many business ends up returning the iPod s and investing in traditional POS

systems again (Kimmons, 2017).

How safe is the mobile POS service, and will your customers trust it?

Small businesses might be more vulnerable to a cyber-attack. It is essential to

understand the service’s security policies and procedures and for all staff to be

able to explain them if customers ask. Some services will hold onto funds longer

than the traditional POS systems, so be sure their terms are clear before

signing up with any mobile POS service otherwise you could find yourself in for

a shock. While this typically applies more to outdoor vendors, an interrupted or

unavailable connection can throw a big monkey wrench into your operations. If

you can’t be certain that your wireless barcode scanner, mobile point of sale

terminal, or smartphone with a card reader will work the vast, vast majority of

the time, then it’s possible that mobilizing your POS system isn’t the right call

for you. (Fink, 2018)

With smartphones and apps revolutionizing the technological scenario,

organizations have realized the changeover required in serving the customers.

If we go by industry estimates, mobile point of sale applications or better known

as mPOS apps are getting more popular. This fact based on Forrester

Research Report 2014 that predicted almost 79% retailers deploying solutions

related to mobile point of sale by 2015. In fact, it has been a while wherein the

retail sector has seen a rise in accepting mobile solutions. It all started from the

debut of Apple iPod, promoted as a tool meant for both business and personal

use. With the arrival of iPod, there was an outburst of applications for printing,

scanning, and other similar tasks. Due to this iPod suddenly became an

impressive designing marvel for an absolute seamless point of sale experience.

Thereafter several other providers delivered solutions in order to leverage the

Apple platform and related hardware for enabling mPOS attract businesses.
Sales agents can perform sales activity with the consumer anytime

anywhere, even immediately right after the product selected at display area. As

an example, a shopper shopping at a superstore need not to go to cashier for

settling payments, instead he/she can simply hand over the credit card to sales

agents who performs transaction within seconds, and the shopper gets what

he/she wants standing right at the place of selecting product (AnilPatel, 2018).

Mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay are

gaining popularity among consumers. These contactless payment solutions

allow consumers to use smartphones to pay for goods and services. Traders

are looking for ways to accept these types of payments and this is where mPOS

can help. From a merchant's perspective, new NFC enabled mPOS solutions

are much easier to implement, less expensive, provide the convenience to

accept contactless payments anywhere and help integrate value-added

services, such as loyalty and offers (ScottHolt, 2018)

To think it’s already been three years since Apple introduced their digital

wallets feature, Apple Pay, for iPhones and their other products! In 2014, the

computer giant was the only one offering the option of mobile online payments,

but other companies of note like Google, Samsung, and Walmart soon followed

suit the next year. Mobile wallets are a significant upgrade in the payment

solution space for several reasons. For one, mobile wallets offer another

avenue for gathering vital customer analytics about shopping trends, giving

business owners a better idea of how to enhance the retail experience. Mobile

wallet payments are also much faster than cash transactions, speeding up the

checkout process. With the means to effectively shape a more convenient and
insightful shopping experience at a faster rate, mobile wallets are helping

businesses promote more sales.

Mobile Point of Sale Devices

The future of payment solutions appears to be in making as many

aspects of a transaction mobile. MPOS devices were very disruptive devices

when they were first introduced, giving customers the ability to pay from their

phone from practically anywhere within a store or restaurant. But now that

customers expect businesses to accept card transactions, MPOS devices are

becoming more of essential. Business predictions based off the current

strategies of Square, a popular U.S. credit card processing company who

launched an MPOS product for retail, say that there will be 27.7 million MPOS

devices in the U.S. by 2021. Large sellers who reach over $125,000 in

annualized sales make up $5.25 billion 42% of Square’s gross purchase

volume as of the second quarter of 2016. MPOS devices represent a major shift

in how we view customer transactions. Digital currency is on the rise now more

than ever and will continue to be status quo moving forward.

Payments Security

Of course, when anything is digitized there’s always a security risk

involved regarding hackers and fraud. The U.S. has been particularly subject

to heavy losses regarding digital payment solutions, with credit card fraud

costing them a whopping $16 billion last year. At the advisement of well-known

card networks like Visa and MasterCard, merchants have switched from

magnetic stripe to EMV a.k.a. micro chipped card transactions (Moore, 2018).
MPOS terminals are dedicated incorporated mobile equipment (tablets

and smartphones) that work as electronic POS terminals. This dedicated mobile

equipment can also be changed into compensation terminals through the use

of dongles or sleeves. These are equipped with utilities such as Radio

Frequency Identification, Wi-Fi, and Voice over Internet Protocol and

Smartcard. Mobile POS terminals are additionally utilized to administer receive

and send invoices, inventory/assets, dispatch digitizes notes, and takes

signatures at respective counters. These abilities allow mPOS terminals to

acknowledge payments even distantly by wireless applications. Technical

Advancements in payment technologies coupled with the shift towards Euro

pay/MasterCard/Visa) chip card satisfy is expected to propel growth over the

forecast period (GrandviewresearchInc, 2018).

One of the questions that we get most often from our clients and

especially our clients’ clients is: ‘Why should I invest in an mPOS solution?’ For

the ones that don’t want to read any further, the short answer is because it

makes the customer experience better, it ensures the sale and it saves time.

The longer explanation is that the technological advancements in the past few

decades completely changed the way that people interact, shop and pay.

Customers today want to be more engaged with their preferred stores, they

cannot live without their smartphones and they don’t want to carry cash with

them. That’s how we arrive to the mobile Point of Sale. This technology that is

composed of a smartphone, an app and a card reader enables a great customer

experience, accepts all payment methods and is extremely easy and secure to

use (Dimitrovska, 2018).

Point-Of-Sale

A computerized network operated by a main computer and linked to

several checkout terminals. Inventory software programs now on the market let

you track usage, monitor changes in unit dollar costs, calculate when you need

to reorder, and analyze inventory levels on an item-by-item basis. You can even

control inventory right at the cash register with point-of-sale software systems.

POS software records each sale when it happens, so your inventory records

are always up-to-date. Better still, you get much more information about the

sale than you could gather with a manual system. By running reports based on

this information, you can make better decisions about ordering and

merchandising.

With a POS system you can analyze sales data; figure out how well all

the items on your shelves sell, and adjust purchasing levels accordingly. You

can maintain a sales history to help adjust your buying decisions for seasonal

purchasing trends. You can improve pricing accuracy by integrating bar code

scanners and credit card authorization ability with the POS system. There are

lots of popular POS software systems that enable you to use add on devices at

your checkout stations, including electronic cash drawers, bar code scanners,

credit card readers, and receipt or invoice printers. POS packages frequently

come with integrated accounting modules, including general ledger, accounts

receivable, accounts payable, purchasing, and inventory control systems. In

essence, a POS system is an all-in-one way to keep track of your business

cash flow.

Ease of use. Look for software with a user friendly graphical interface.

Most systems allow you to enter inventory codes either manually or

automatically via a bar code scanner. Once the inventory code is entered, the

systems call up the standard or sales price, compute the price at multiple

quantities and provide a running total. Many systems make it easy to enter

sales manually when needed by letting you search for inventory codes based

on a partial merchandise number, description, manufacturing code or vendor.

POS systems generally offer a variety of ways to keep track of pricing, including

add on amounts, percentage of cost, margin percentage and custom formulas.

For example, if you provide volume discounts, you can set up multiple prices

for each item. Updating product information when you want to add another

items or products. Once a sale is entered, these systems automatically update

inventory and accounts receivable records.

Sales tracking options you can easily track your sales. Different

businesses get paid in different ways. For example, repair or service shops

often keep invoices open until the work is completed, so they need a system

that allows them to put sales on hold. If you sell expensive goods and allow

installment purchases, you might appreciate a loan calculator that arranges

monthly payments. And if you offer rent to own items, you'll want a system that

can handle rentals as well as sales. Security you can surely secure your

business using this system. In retail it's important to keep tight control over cash

receipts to prevent theft. Most of these systems provide audit trails so you can

trace any problems. Taxes. Many POS systems can support numerous taxes

rates useful if you run a mail order business and need to deal with taxes for

more than one state.

Perhaps the most valuable way POS systems help you gain better

control of your business is through their reporting features. You can slice and
dice sales data in a variety of ways to determine what products are selling best

at what time, and to figure out everything from the optimal ways to arrange

shelves and displays to what promotions are working best and when to change

seasonal promotions. Reporting capabilities available in POS programs include

sales, costs, and profits by individual inventory items, by salesperson, or by

category for the day, month and year to date. Special reports can include sales

for each hour of the day for any time period. You can also create multiple

formats for invoices, accounting statements and price tags. Additional reports

include day end cash reconciliation work sheets and inventory management.

Analyze a variety of POS packages to see which comes near to meet your

needs. Every business is unique, you may find that none of the off the shelf

systems meets your requirements. Industry specific POS packages are

available for auto repair shops, beauty and nail salons, video rental stores, dry

cleaners and more. In addition, some POS system manufacturers will design

their software to your needs (EntrepreneurMediaInc., 2018)

A point of sale system is a combination of hardware and software built

to centralize business operations. What is POS? POS stands for point of sale,

which refers to the time and place the point that a sales transaction is

completed. A point of sale system surrounds the hardware, software, and

support that manage that transaction, including credit card processing, and the

post transaction operations that lead to customer fulfilment, whether in a retail

or restaurant setting. The functionality POS systems can provide is why they

are replacing traditional cash registers. A point of sale serves as the central

point for customer data, sales reporting, and can even manage labour and

inventory. Running a business on separate pieces of technology working

independently is high stress and unproductive. Point of sale systems connect

every part of a business, to simply and efficiently improve operations.

POS Hardware

In most cases, there are three options for POS hardware: PC computers,

Apple iPods, or Android tablets. PC computers are plugged in to a server in

your back office, so all unencrypted credit card data is stored on the computer.

Apple iPods are cloud-based, but not cheap, and only come in a few sizes.

However, Android POS tablets are customizable in terms of sizes, durable for

messy kitchens, and flexible with many peripheral connections for Ethernet,

HDMI, and USB. Besides the general terminal hardware, most POS systems

integrate with other hardware options such as kitchen display systems, receipt

printers, scales, cash drawers, pole displays, scanners.

POS software used to have to be installed on a PC computer. Online

POS software, however, is a new trend among point of sale systems. This

software can be accessed online in real-time from any internet-connected

device. Plus, it can integrate with many other restaurant software solutions.

POS software allows for the collection of data about credit card transactions,

customers, sales, taxes, inventory and labor. Many modern POS systems

implement a software-as-a-service model, where customers pay a monthly

subscription to access and use the software (BusinessReviewInc., 2018).

Point of Sale Terminal - Think back to the last time you went to a store,

any store, or even a restaurant. What did you have to do before you could bring

your new stuff home or leave the restaurant after eating? You had to pay. And

do you remember how the business took your payment? You might have used
cash or credit card. And if you are high tech, you might have used your

cellphone to pay with Apple Pay or Android Pay.

Types - Depending on the store you went to, you may have seen

different types of point of sale terminals. You have your usual cash register

point of sale systems that you see at grocery stores. Then you also see more

high tech systems such as apps for tablets and cell phones that allow

businesses to take a payment anywhere they are with nothing but a little card

reader that attaches to the headphones jack of tablets and cell phones. All that's

need is an internet connection. You may also have noticed that some

restaurants are beginning to use self-checkout tablets at each table. Instead of

having to wait for your waiter to process your credit card payment, you can now

simply swipe it at your table when you are done and leave. No more waiting.

These systems can also allow you to order more food while you are there

without having to flag down a busy waiter.

The biggest point of having a point of sale terminal for a business is the

savings in time. The point of sale terminal can make a record of what you have

sold for the day and what kind of transaction it was, whether it was cash or

credit, or some other type of payment. More complex systems even have

employee tracking so you know who made the sale. And some even come with

inventory tracking so you can keep track of how much you sold and how much

you have left. Point of sale terminals make it quicker for a business to check

out a customer as it makes ringing up prices much easier. Think of your

department store and how many products it has. Without a point of sale terminal

that remembers all the prices, it would take that much longer for an employee

to check someone out as he or she would have to look up any prices he or she
didn't know and then manually enter that information. With a point of sale

terminal, all the employee needs to do is to scan the item and the item's

information is automatically entered (AstonGreenLake, 2018).

First invented in the 1800s in Ohio, the cash register was the brainchild

of James Ritty, a successful saloon keeper and liquor dealer, who was trying to

find ways to avoid being fleeced by his employees. Over the following decades,

incremental improvements were made to the cash register, enabling cashiers

to ring up sales faster and to efficiently keep track of transactions. By the mid-

1900s, the mechanical cash register, featuring the crank, had become a familiar

presence in the retail industry.

The emergence of computers in the 1990s transformed traditional cash

registers into computerized POS and also led to the introduction of barcode

scanners and PC based point-of-sale systems. The rise of PC-based POS also

coincided with the evolution of payments from the usage of cash to card. While

it remains debatable whether the rise of PC based POS led to the demand for

card payments or vice versa, the demand for card payments led to standalone

credit card devices being developed and connected to POS systems. The fact

that retailers no longer have to write down the transactions data, printed onto

paper tapes, into an accounts system has release up a huge amount of their

time. With a modern EPoS system, retailers can easily integrate their

accounting; keep track of their inventory; forecast sales; and even manage

customer relations all through one place. With the widespread proliferation of

mobile devices, it’s not surprising that the next step in the evolution of POS is

towards mobile point of sale. Now it’s commonplace to tap your iPod or

smartphone to pay at your local coffee place and other smaller retail
establishments. While EPoS and MPoS are standard on the high street, the

convenience industry is behind the trend, with numerous stores operating on

outdated technology. It means convenience retailers are losing their

competitive edge to the bigger competitor. The cloud based EPoS solution also

allows retailers to manage their businesses from anywhere with any device,

providing important data and even real time updates on the performance of their

stores. Retailers are now armed with the necessary data to compete efficiently

against the bigger competitor. Point-of-sale software can only be as good as its

ability to integrate with popular customer services and meet retailer needs.

PayPoint One is built to be future proof, built on a flexible Android platform

giving the capacity to evolve according to customers and retailers needs. In the

next few years, this flexibility will play a key role in the evolution of POS

systems. As consumers increasingly use multiple channels to shop, POS

systems will need to evolve even further to provide features which allow

retailers to stay up-to-date on various channels (offline and online) from one

platform. The main advantage of a computerized POS system over a cash box

or a cash register is the advanced and detailed sales reports it provides. The

software lets you analyze sales in different ways, such as by SKU (item sold),

time periods, promotions, by store if you have more than one, or even by sales

clerk. It will help your inventory manager buy in the right number of cartons of

tissue paper with improved timing, and help your chef calculate how much

cheese to order for the coming week, taking into account an upcoming holiday.

It can also help reduce employee shrinkage.

Point of sale system simplifies the accounting process. Old fashioned

cash registers force accountants to sort through hundreds of receipts, but with
a point of sale system financial personnel can simply use the built in reports or

create their own. Unlike a cash register, a point of sale system often includes

an overall inventory management system. Store owners can use a point of sale

system to track their biggest sellers and reorder those products when stock gets

low. It is easy to look up past transactions. If you need to know how much you

sold last Tuesday a point of sale system can give you that information in a snap.

It would take many hours of laborious work to find the same answer using a

cash register.

You can use a point of sale system to create your own purchase orders,

eliminating an extra step in the ordering process. You can even automate the

ordering process to make sure you never run out of your hottest selling

products. Modern workers are often more comfortable with point of sale devices

than old fashioned cash registers. The generation now entering the workforce

never knew a time without computers, and as a result they are very comfortable

working with computerized technology like point of sale devices. Point of sale

devices provides faster service than old fashioned cash registers. Every part of

the process, from authorizing a credit card transaction to printing a customer

receipt, is faster on a point of sale device. Customers receive more informative

register receipts with a point of sale devices. Many cash registers can only print

the date and the amount of the sale, but since point of sale devices are tied into

the inventory control system they can provide much more detailed information,

including a description of the item, the list price and the sale price. Point of sale

devices can cut down on user errors. Hitting a wrong key is always a risk when

ringing a sale, but point of sale devices have built in checks to ensure that the

information is entered accurately.

You can see real time inventory with a point of sale device, something

that even the best cash registers simply cannot do. In fact, many companies

have found that implementing a point of sale system effectively eliminates the

need for a costly hand count. The maintenance and repair costs are often much

lower on a point of sale device than a cash register. The number of companies

that repair cash registers is reduce, and that means that repair costs can be

rather high. There are many vendors who repair point of sale devices, and that

can keep repair costs low.

Inventory Control

A point of sale system can be integrated into the inventory control for a

company. Once that integration is in place, the system can automatically

generate a purchase order and reorder items when they start to run low. That

automated system can reduce the amount of work and expense associated with

running the business, which can in turn boost profits and profit margins.

Product Selection

With a point of sale system, managers can run reports that show not only

how many of each item was sold, but which items were the most popular. For

example, a convenience store manager could run a report showing soda sales

for the previous week and then use that report to determine which flavours

consider for most of the sales. That information can be quite valuable when the

time comes to restock the shelves or order new supplies. Managers can also

use point of sale data to spot seasonal trends in their merchandise sales and

stock their shelves to take advantage of that demand.

Required Updates

With a point of sale system, you are depending on the software that runs

the network, and that software must be updated on a regular basis. If you

choose to install a point of sale system, you will need to schedule those updates

or allow the POS vendor to download and install them for you. Point of sale

systems typically requires an ongoing maintenance fee to cover updates and

changes to the system, on top of the cost of the initial setup.

Security Risks

Point of sale systems connect the registers in the store to a central

network, and that connectivity comes with its own security risks. If the software

is not kept up to date, or if it is updated incorrectly, security breaches can occur.

Depending on the nature of the business, those security violations could involve

highly sensitive and protected information, including credit card numbers and

bank account information. The theft of such personal data could put the

company at legal and financial risk.

Detailed reports

The important feature of any POS system is that it can store much more

information and that too much faster than a traditional cash register. It gives

you the facility to pull out information from any terminal of the business within

seconds, directly through the central hub, which has access to all inventory data

of your business. A point of sale system can pull out reports on the fly and

brings up to date and exact information about sales, items, time log and much

more.
Faster Checkout Speed

Since POS system primarily uses bar code scanning or similar feature,

accordingly modifying and completing a transaction is done at a more rapid

rate. When you make a comparison between the traditional methods and the

point of sale process, you can easily see the transaction time difference.

Keyboard entry of a 12 character data, which is a typical UPC length, would

take about 6 seconds and scan it in the form of bar code would take just about

2 seconds. Obvious now, this system is faster and accessing data is easier too.

POS system facilitates using features like refunds, void or no sale so simple

that it's just a click away.

Accurate reports

Accuracy is the most important factor when you are dealing with an

extensive inventory. One single mistake can lead to a mistake. This has been

a long known proverb, and no one can prove it wrong even today. Using a POS

system makes your calculation and database almost 100% accurate. Unless

the machine somehow malfunctions, there can be no mistake for even the 10th

place of a decimal in your calculations.

Fast Facts - As per studies, standard keying of details by even

experienced cashiers is one error in every 300 characters typed using a

keyboard. Now let's see the case with POS system. A bar code reader for

example here has a mistake in 15,000 to 36 trillion characters scanned, and it

depends on the type of barcode. Yes, this is a huge difference. Apart from

making mistakes through the traditional method, it also incurs the extra cost of

correcting the mistakes and making the final reports incorrect. Some of the

times, the prices of some items need to be changed, and it might be a hard task
to make the correction at every intersection of the data is stored. In the POS

system, you can make the change at every place by just making the change at

the hub or the back office primary database. Some of such software prints ledge

labels and you might not need to modify the price tag on every item.

Easy Tracking of Inventory

A Point of sale system keeps a better record of the inventory. It gives

you an accurate figure of how many items were sold. It keeps regular track of

all the product movements taking place. This is a very efficient and helpful factor

for any business. The inventory details have all the data about the product

movement like the sales, date of sale, price and much more. It helps you to

manage sufficient amount of inventory in stock and makes sure that it never

lacks in any particular item.

In the traditional system, you might need to enter the sales data into the

excel sheet after getting it from the cash register software and then calculate

the inventory movement for each item. However, in the POS system, you can

do all this in the same system, and there is no need to fetch data from anywhere

else and type it again. It saves an enormous amount of time and prevents errors

with manual data entry. There are software types that allow various kinds of

inventory tracking methods. Two common types are continual and seasonal.

Continual inventory tracking is a type of real time inventory tracking in which

the stock items record updates as items move out. The number of items

remaining in the inventory reduces as the item is sold and passes through the

checkpoint. The seasonal inventory tracking system counts the inventory at

every week, month or year. It is done after a particular time interval.

Point-of-sale surveys can improve your business's understanding of its

audience, allowing you to compute customer satisfaction as soon as a

transaction takes place. A POS survey is any survey given to a paying customer

in store, often through an electronic terminal or check out machine. Looking at

the benefits of point-of-sale customer surveys could help you to see whether or

not your existing customer feedback process needs updating. A cash register

has fewer components than a Pos system, which means it's less likely to be

able to be used for payroll, worker data, recordkeeping and other normal

business operations. Because of that, the cash register is much easier to learn.

There are fewer ways to make mistakes, and there are not as many programs

to worry about on the machine. Small business owners may first start with cash

register and avoid moving on to a pos system. That's because cost is a major

factor for those looking into cash registers versus pos systems. a new cash

register is typically less expensive than a new pos system, and when this is

combined with the extra training costs, it can result in stores sticking with a cash

register-based set up. Others may simply not need all of the capabilities of the

pos system. if payroll is done on paper or sales are processed nightly by the

staff, it can make the pos system look too expensive for the added benefits that

aren't needed. Invalid source specified.

A point of sale system is what you see when you take your groceries up

to the front of the store to pay for them. It is a computerized system that links

the cashier and customer to an entire network of information, handling

transactions between the customer and store and maintaining updates on

pricing and promotions. Although a point of sale system has many advantages,

it is important not to overlook the disadvantages.

Point-of-sale is a phrase taken from the cash register industry. It

describes action where the purchase takes place. Consider the latest

generation of cash register which instantly updates inventory and orders new

product. Before the customer walks out of the store, a replacement for the

purchased item is in the works. This concept is a key component of the Work

the System method as described in our 30 Principles document, item number

14: Do it now. All actions build on “point-of-sale” theory. We don’t delay an

action if it can be done immediately. Just like any major retail outlet, we “update

inventories and databases at the exact time the transaction takes place.” There

is no paperwork floating around the office after a physical transaction. We ask,

“How can we perform the task NOW without creating lingering details that we

must clean up later?”

The concept of point-of-sale, with its various subtleties, has the single

purpose of gobbling up details and tasks as they arise. Accomplishing this is

the antithesis of fire-killing. Point-of-sale means being in the offense, eyes

open, ready to handle whatever comes up, instead of defensively looking

backward, burning up precious time sorting through piles of old details.

For business and personal life, the point-of-sale posture allows you to

focus on the path ahead while your other systems-strategies take care of the

details that arise behind. Wear the point-of-sale banner on your sleeve and you

will experience robust confidence, the opposite of overwhelm. The excuses “I

don’t have enough time” and “I’ve been too busy” will disappear from your life.

In a nutshell, here are two point-of-sale strategies that will make your life simple

and clean. The first is to reject procrastination. Get tasks out of the way now by

immediately doing them, delegating them, or discarding them. Make it your

quest to knock off tasks as they appear! The second strategy is to eliminate the

requirement for personal action by automating and systemizing tasks. By

making things happen automatically, the do it now goal is achieved without any

effort at all. Here’s an additional benefit of the point-of-sale stance: You will be

in an alert, assertive posture, prepared to handle the inevitable body-slams that

are part of having a life. (Carpenter, 2018)

A modern point-of-sale system doesn’t need dedicated computer

terminals with bulky card reader machines, printers, scanners and more.

Though having them isn't a bad thing at all. You can now make a sale, receive

payments, and create and send out invoices using just your iPod and a POS

app. Everything else is optional and can be added on per your budget and the

scale of your operations. More than just credit cards: Typical POS systems

found in your average retail outlet accept payments only via cash or credit and

debit cards. This means that if you don't qualify for a credit card, you better be

prepared to lug around large amounts of cash with you at all times. With modern

POS systems, such limitations are history. POS systems at most Subway

stores across the United States accept payments via Google Wallet, Apple Pay,

PayPal and other mobile payment systems that integrate NFC technology. Just

tapping your phone on the POS system transfers the exact amount from your

account to the merchant, without the need for cash, cards or any other

peripherals. Then there are fingerprint scanners and QR code scanners that

verify payments via biometrics or unique codes to ensure 100 percent data

security for the user.

Online, offline and multiple store inventory management: Inventory

management in the past was a long drawn out process where sales figures for
the day were reconciled with existing inventory and fresh supplies. Detecting

losses due to damage and shrinkage was left to the keen eye of store

managers, security cameras and manual barcode scanning. The entire process

used to be so labour intensive that most of it happened before opening hours

or after closing hours so store employees could focus on avoiding errors. The

newest cloud based POS systems make inventory management a breeze.

Once inventory lists are uploaded to the POS software, these systems

automatically reconcile inventory against sales on a real time basis. When items

run low, you have the option of automatically placing a new order with your

vendors or receiving alerts from the POS system reminding you to manually

raise a replenishment order. The best part is that these systems sync your

inventory not just in one store, but across all your physical outlets if you so

desire. Have a brick-and-click presence? No worries. A cloud-based POS can

easily sync sales at your physical stores with those via your online stores and

update your inventory numbers instantaneously.

Pricing simplified: Modern POS systems ensure that you don’t have to

jump through a million hoops or wait till the end of a business day to make a

change in an item’s price. Now you can modify prices, apply discounts or even

mark ups at a moment’s notice and the changes will take effect instantly across

the board. Did you decide to extend a one off discount to a loyal customer based

on a situation that cropped up in store? You can now reconcile the short term

special discount situation in seconds on a modern POS system without having

to make elaborate changes on your inventory and pricing software later in the

day. Businesses like restaurants that tend to substitute one ingredient for

another on their specials or make significant changes in their item prices find
modern POS software to be a blessing compared to pre-planned menus that

can’t be modified on the fly.

Business on the go: What happens when you participate in outside

events that require you to accept payments on the spot? You can’t possibly

drag that cash register everywhere you go, can you? Enter mobile POS. A

mobile POS system offers businesses flexibility and the freedom to accept

payments literally anywhere under the sun. Not only can you check your sales

and inventory levels or store performance from a beach in Bali, you can even

accept payments on your mobile phone with these ingenious tools. A

smartphone, card reader attachment and your POS app are all you need to

make a sale and receive payments anytime, anywhere.

Cheaper operation: One time license fees for traditional POS systems

are typically quite high up to a few thousand depending on the brand and the

range of functionality you opt for. Hardware alone can cost about a few

thousand dollars to begin with, including items like customer displays, receipt

printers, item scanners and cash registers. Alternately, a POS system that

resides in the cloud is significantly cheaper, with affordable monthly fees

ranging at the very most to a few hundred dollars. Many are even free for basic

plans. Besides, a cloud based modern POS system doesn't burden you with

expensive hardware and software commitments. You can always switch from

one provider to another to get the best deal.

Reporting, that expedites business planning: One of the standout

features of modern POS systems is their highly detailed reporting and analytics

capabilities. Most POS systems track business performance on a short-term as

well as long-term basis, create trend reports, and send regular updates

regarding the overall health of your business. Things like gross revenue,

margins and profits can all be easily calculated on a daily basis. With detailed

sales reports, it's possible to precisely identify which products are doing well

and which ones aren’t. Action steps can be taken and their impact can be

tracked based on POS reports. Forecasting business plans becomes easier

and a lot more accurate when you’re armed with this plethora of data points.

Customer relationship management: When tedious tasks like inventory

management, price reconciliations, creating sales reports and the like become

automated, it frees up employees’ time and allows them to offer better one on

one service in store. Relationships can be built and nurtured thanks to the data

available at a glance on POS systems regarding each customer. Most POS

software allows users to accept and store customer details. The POS marries

customer details with actual purchase data and creates customer profiles for

the merchant. This detailed customer data can be easily mined to create tailor

made offers for each customer based on their individual preferences. With

purchase records at your fingertips, you can identify your best customers and

incentivize them to buy more. From emailing receipts to customers to helping

in customer segmentation to help in building loyalty programs, a POS system

goes above and beyond what the humble cash register ever could. More than

anything else, a modern POS system gifts you the time and peace of mind to

focus on things that matter more than record keeping, inventory tracking or

even pricing reconciliations. Things like your customers. (Ayyar, 2018)

A modern restaurant point-of-sale is the first step towards attaining that

efficiency and depth of analysis that restaurants so desperately crave. Modern

restaurant POS systems allow you to take orders and conduct transactions,

sure, but there’s so much more to them than that. The key lies in efficiency.

With a POS system that is easy to use, you save time on each and every single

transaction. Plus, when your staff can learn the system faster, less time, effort,

and money is spent on training and getting people up to speed. One restaurant

using a modern POS system is New York’s Pat LaFrieda Meat Purveyors.

LaFrieda, who runs the business, actually went through two other POS systems

before landing on Toast POS, which he claims made his restaurant run more

smoothly. "For anyone opening a restaurant, Toast is the perfect POS system,"

he says. “Whatever the problem is, Toast has a solution for it and they've

thought it through carefully. That's really what meant everything to us that are

what keeps a restaurant in business." Modern POS systems range in price,

technology, and functionality. If you’re in the market for a new restaurant point

of sale, use the POS ROI Guide to find out how your restaurant technology will

benefit your business in the long run. (Abda, 2018)

The study provides comprehensive assessments of stakeholders

strategies and imperatives for succeeding in the business. This research study

focuses on market data and insights, including the size and growth of the point-

of-sale terminals market. The report provides a thorough analysis of the

emerging industry trends and the prevailing state of the market. It offers a

comprehensive coverage of the underlying technological and economic factors

influencing the point of sale terminals business. The prevalent competition in

the market is identified through market share analysis of key players in the

market. Furthermore, the value chain analysis and Porter’s five forces analysis

are included in the report, aiming to provide strategic insight across the supply

chain of the point-of-sale terminals market. Additionally, the report also includes

profiles of major market participants for better understanding of their

contributions. The company profiles include overview of company, revenue,

strategies followed by them for gaining competitive advantage and recent

developments.(Choudhary,2017)

A market trend is anything that alters the market your company operates

in. In order to keep your company ahead of the competition, it is important to

utilize market trend analysis, or the process of evaluating changes to your

market. Market trend analysis looks at how your industry started in the market,

how it has grown, and where it is expected to go. For example, how cell phones

first come about, how their popularity changed, and how manufacturers and

retailers expect the market to change(Tanner,2018).

Algorithm

Regression analysis is a form of predictive modelling technique which

investigates the relationship between target and predictor. This technique is

used for forecasting, time series modelling and finding the causal effect

relationship between the variables. (Ray, 2015)

Clustering is a Machine Learning technique that involves the grouping of

data points. Given a set of data points, we can use a clustering algorithm to

classify each data point into a specific group. In theory, data points that are in

the same group should have similar properties and/or features, while data

points in different groups should have highly dissimilar properties and/or

features. Clustering is a method of unsupervised learning and is a common

technique for statistical data analysis used in many fields (Seif, 2018).

Sales Spotter this paper develops an algorithm, called the sales spotter,

which identifies the sale prices in the transaction price series provided in point-

of-sale data. The goal of the sales spotter is to identify the maximum number

of sale prices while minimizing the incorrect attribution of non-sale price

reductions to sale prices. The spotter is developed and the values of its

parameters are selected by analyzing around 7.5 million aged sales in a US

supermarket scanner data. At the optimal values of the parameters, the spotter

identifies 84% of authentic aged sale weeks in the data (Syed, 2018).

Trend many investors still identify trends by studying charts and drawing

trend lines by hand. The key weakness of this method is its subjective nature,

allowing you to see the trends you want to see which may also fit in with your

subconscious preferences. It is also very time consuming. Now, though, good

tools for such analysis are available. Invest tech has developed automatic

algorithms for trend identification. Every day these find the ”best” trend in the

chart, where included criteria amongst others are the density of the trend,

deviation from regression and number of points near floor and ceiling. In an

Invest tech chart for the medium long term, with 18 months’ history,

approximately 80,000 different trend alternatives are assessed every day. Each

is assigned a score, and the one with the highest score is selected In the old

days, as described in Invest tech’s book on technical stock analysis, visual

technical analysis was conducted manually: "Study price movements in order

to identify a trend. The price rarely moves in a straight line, but rather as a series

of tops and bottoms. If you can draw a straight line between two or more rising

bottoms, this is the support line of a rising trend, see figure 1. Then draw a

parallel line through the rising tops. This line is called the trend’s resistance line,

and support and resistance combined make up the trend, see figure 2. Similarly

you get a falling trend if you can draw a straight line through two or more falling

tops and a parallel line though falling bottoms. (Thetrendbible.com, 2018).

Data Investigation your retail stores can't function without point-of-sale

systems, but they're one of the greatest information security vulnerabilities.

Recent news reports indicate that a Russian cybercrime collective has

successfully targeted five separate providers of point-of-sale software in the

past few months, affecting "hundreds of thousands" of U.S. based businesses.

Significant point-of-sale breaches in the past twelve months have affected hotel

groups, fast food chains, and other major brands. The 2016 Verizon Data

Breach Investigations Report DBIR found that point-of-sale breaches are

among the most common methods of attack. There were a total of 534 incidents
included in their research. In some cases, POS attacks may follow phishing

incidents once hackers have gained entry to a system.

Retailers cannot function without point-of-sale systems to process

customer transactions. While payment applications are a crucial component of

retail, they're also among the most vulnerable. Security pros in the retail and

hospitality industries should be aware of the inherent, emerging, and vendor-

driven risks that surround this technology. Cybercriminals can begin scraping

your customer's card data just minutes after gaining entry to your network via

Point-of-Sale malware, a phishing attack, your vendors, or countless other

means. Immediate detection is the only way to protect your customers and your

brand. (Ogden, 2018)

Beneficiaries

Buying a point-of-sale system may seem like a hassle and an

unnecessary expensive, but if you look closer, you’ll find clear gains. There are

two main types of systems: for retail stores; and for restaurants and hotels, also

known as the hospitality category. To understand the different requirements for

the hospitality industry, read Tips on Buying POS for Restaurants. The benefits

of point-of-sale systems are: Accuracy: Scanning is more accurate than

punching in numbers from a sticker, or expecting the cashier to remember what

each item costs.

Analysis: point of sale systems let you manage inventory, flag items for

reorder, and analyze sales patterns. A point-of-sale system is, at heart, a cash

register but because it’s based on a PC, it opens up a new world of data about

your business. Point-of-sale terminals can be networked to other terminals, and

to a server in the back room or at another location. It can be expanded with

handheld devices wirelessly linked to the main system. You can use it to can

track a number of operations in useful ways and customize it as your needs

change over time.

The main advantage of a computerized/android point-of-sale system

over a cash box or a cash register is the sophisticated and detailed sales reports

it provides. The software lets you analyze sales in different ways, time periods,

promotions, by store if you have more than one, or even by sales clerk. It will

help your inventory manager buy in the right number of cartons of tissue paper

with improved timing, and help your chef calculate how much cheese to order

for the coming week, taking into account an upcoming holiday. It can also help

reduce employee shrinkage. If you bite the bullet and pay the costs, you can

integrate all this into your accounting and inventory software systems. The

added and more immediate flow of detailed information about your sales will

help you come up with better competitive ideas and then evaluate their

effectiveness. (McCarthy, 2018)

Synthesis

With all the study that the researcher reviewed, Interest to the recent

system to improve and add more option made the researchers to look forward

in how to improve and add some more idea in the study. The researcher made

a decision to pursue the study to enhance more about the project. With all the

study, the researcher found out that there are some more differences with all

the study and that is why they took advantage of it to improve the study.

evaluation to know which module is need to develop, so it can will undergo in

the development process to fill all the errors of the project.

Monitor Project

On the last stage, the researchers will monitor the created project to

know if the project met the goals and objectives and also to make sure that it

addressed all the problem of the whole research and to identify the potential

glitches to take an accurate response to confirm that the project is within the

scope

Population of the Study

All business establishment that having a delivery system are all the

target of the researchers for the created were the system will be verified. The

researchers wants to give all business owners a reliable and speed transaction

of delivering all items and for them to easily monitor all the items that has a high

demand of sales. This is were data investigation occurs, all the items that have

a sales will be monitored. All business owners will benefit to this study because

the reasearcher want to give them a hassle free in terms of looking of high sales

in a certain day, week or month.

The researchers will conduct an evaluation to the (25) beneficiaries

which are composed of (20) business owners which are the usually having a

delivery system. The other (5) respondents are IT Professionals which is the

most precise to answer the evaluation based on the ISO 25010.

Sampling Design

In the Sampling Design the researchers used a non-probability sample

which is the Purposive Sampling to reach all the target sample immediately.

Through the years, every system developer need a methodology to build

a system. We use Agile Scrum Methodology as our method to use. We will

follow the procedure indicated in the figure. We need to use Agile because we

need to conduct the Product backlog for us to know what the admin wants us

to do. It will be followed next with the Sprint backlog for division of task for the

members. Every other week, we will conduct a meeting for us to know the flow

of the system.

Knowledge Discovery in Database

Source: https://www.google.com/search?q=knowledge+discovery+in+databases&source

Figure 8 Knowledge Discovery in Database

Knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) is the process of discovering

useful knowledge from a collection of data. This widely used data mining

technique is a process that includes data preparation and selection, data

cleansing, incorporating prior knowledge on data sets and interpreting accurate

solutions from the observed results.

Major KDD application areas include marketing, fraud detection,

telecommunication and manufacturing. The researcher applies KDD to system

development as a guide to achieve the goal.

Data Gathering

The researcher gathered a data from all business establishment with a

delivery system in their daily process of business. This data was saved and

transformed into softcopy for the upcoming substantial procedures like this

project. The researchers conduct an interview and gather data to the

businesses within the Municipality of Los Baños. With all businesses that
having a process of delivery has been gathered a data process it to test the

system.

Data Pre-Processing

After rewriting and compiling all the data gathered by the researchers,

the data must undergo on the data pre-processing where the raw data is being

transformed into a comprehensible format and also include size and noise

reduction.

Transformation

All of the data had been collected are going to put into a soft copy and

must separate all from a form of differences of each data. The researcher use

this method to easily understand on how they will input all the data into data

mining.

Data Mining

After the data are transformed into a softcopy, the researchers use the

rapid miner to calculate the accuracy of all data collected. This process helps

a lot the researcher to know how the system will gather the data. Data mining

using rapid miner shows the pattern of clustered data collected.

Interpretation/Evaluation

After the process that the data undergo, the researcher evaluated the

data as accurate to the data given. The evaluation undergo in the process of

clustering all data collected from beneficiaries who owns a business that has

a process of delivery. Some business does not have a delivery but still they

can use the system for their issuing receipts. Their data has been process to

get the accuracy of the system.

Unit Testing

Unit Testing is the first level of software testing, where the source code

of each module is being tested. This method is usually done to determine that

each module is operational.

Integration Testing

The Integration testing is one part of software testing, where the different

modules or units are combined and tested as a whole to identify if there is a

problem between their interactions. Applying the Integration Testing in the

project will makes easier for the developer to identify the faults between the

communication of each module.

part, the researcher test the application in forward testing and backward testing

to identify the compatibility between lower version and higher version.

Performance Testing

The Performance Testing is used to ensure that the created project is

performing well even it is under their expected capability. It is also used to

recognize the reliability and response time of the project.

To test the performance of the created project, the researchers create a

test case where they placed a particular volume of process on the project to

identify its stability and responsiveness.

Stress Testing

The researcher used the Stress Testing to measure the limit of the

created project. It is test with more than the capacity of user and inputs to

identify its breakpoint.

To identify the breakpoint of the project, the researchers create another

test case where the multiple users send multiple commands on the project at
the same time. In this process the researchers analyze the capacity of the

project.

Load Testing

Load Testing is used to measure the performance of the created project

through the capacity of users. Through this testing, the developer identifies the

behavior of the created project during the input of multiple data.

System Testing

The System Testing is done after the different modules are integrated.

The Created Project is tested as a whole to identify if the project meets the

specified requirements.

The created project will test by its objectives, to identify if the project

meets all the specific requirements needed by the users. This testing will show

the performance of the project and its reliability.

Acceptance Testing

In this testing, where the participation of the beneficiaries is needed.

The beneficiaries evaluate the created project to identify if the project comply

with the needs of them. The researchers used the ISO 25010 evaluation to

identify if the project is acceptable for delivery.

CHAPTER V

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

The motivation of the researcher gave this project to continue to add

more knowlegde about the system. The system process has never been easy

for the researcher to achieve this project but through the effort of their parent,

they pursue to finish the project.

Summary

There a lots of business and entrepreneurs in the Philippines however not

all stand out. Some entrepreneur are taking action in the planning and operation

process to more competitive in the market. Every business establishment had

to issue a receipt and manage their businesses. There are still some business

who are still in a old style of issuing a receipt. POS system has began many

years ago but not manage well, the researcher take it as a topic to discuss and

also add some valuable optio for the system.

The process in the making of the system made us proud to finish the

course. Through the continuous study, the researchers noticed that POS

system can alson applied in some small business weather they don’t own a

desktop. Instead, as we are in the age of high end phones, small business

owner can now manage their business well.

The system has undergo in many process to reach the goal. Data

collected from beneficiaries has been undergo from many process to get the

accuracy of the system.

Conclusion

As the researcher notice the current situation and compared it to

solutions available, the researcher found out that many of the time consuming

routines and mistakes could be easily prevented with a comprehensive POS

system. The efficiency of a business can often be measured in how well

business is able to cultivate data and transfer it into meaningful information.

Fact based management leads to better business decisions, but needs

accurate information in real time.

Design a system that investigate the data which is trend in the market.

Designing a system using a Point-of-Sale System that will shows the higher

demand for every sales is the main objective. The researcher used a bar graph

to show all items that came high in terms of sales. The purpose of the graph is

to investigate the market trend everyday. System will update automatically the

sales in every transaction happened in everyday.

Recommendation

In the future study, the proponents suggest the following for the

improvement of the newly develop system:

1. The development of Android version of the system for remote viewing

of the business owners in their mobile devices.

2. The project team also suggests implementing web modules to enable

online update and system patch to be deployed online.

3. The researcher recommend for the future researcher to develop this

kind of system that makes it available in other operating system of

mobile devices.
