Rhetorical Analysis Essay: King, Alvarez, Yousafzai

Persuasive writing can help with speaking towards social justice and equality

because it can show so many people how we should have social justice and equality. In

“Letter from Birmingham Jail Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” the purpose was to persuade

the clergymen and the people. In “U.N. Youth Assembly Speech Malala Yousafzai” the

purpose was to speak for her and all of the people who cannot speak for them self. In “A

Genetics of Justice Julia Alvarez” the purpose was to let everyone know what was going

on and to spread awareness. The rhetoric used in “Letter from Birmingham Jail Dr.

Martin Luther King Jr.” best was ethos because he was a clergyman himself so he knew

what the rest would think. The best rhetoric use in “U.N. Youth Assembly Speech

Malala Yousafzai” is pathos because she was shot. In “A Genetics of Justice Julia

Alvarez” the best rhetoric use was logos. I think the best one to have used rhetoric the

best is “U.N. Youth Assembly Speech Malala Yousafzai”. She has the best rhetoric use

because she had lived through the traumatic event to say her story and actually know

how it feels.

In “Letter from Birmingham Jail Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” the purpose was to

persuade the clergymen and the people. "it is expressed in the various black nationalist

groups that are springing up over the nation, the largest and best-known being Elijah

Mohammad's Muslim movement." and "I don't believe you would so quickly commend

the policemen if you would observe their ugly and inhuman treatment of Negros here in

the city jail." These two examples of ethos and shown in the text because it shows

authority. With the MLK using these authorities it helped persuade and to show people

that there are people who are also involved. MLK rhetoric use was successful because

he had persuaded them with the authorities by saying the name of other well known,

trustworthy people.

In “U.N. Youth Assembly Speech Malala Yousafzai” the purpose was to speak for

her and all of the people who cannot speak. “Innocent and poor children are victims of

child labor. Many schools have been destroyed in Nigeria. People in Afghanistan have

been affected by extremism. Young girls have to do domestic child labor and are forced

to get married at an early age. Poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism, and the deprivation

of basic rights are the main problems, faced by both men and women.” This is pathos

because it gives you sympathy for the people and kids who are suffering. Malala using

this gives her speech so much attention because she is talking about innocent people

and kids.

In “A Genetics of Justice Julia Alvarez” the purpose was to let everyone know

what was going on and to spread awareness. In this article the best rhetoric use was

logos. The rhetoric used is for logic and reasoning. Such as “Whenever we misbehaved,

she would use his example as proof that character shows from the very begging.” and

“At this point, I would ask her why she and my father had returned to live in the country

if they knew the dictatorship was so bad.”. These are the use of logos because it’s the

use of reasoning. Such as when Julia and her sibling does not behave. Her mother

would use Trujillo as an example to behave. Or such as the use of logic for when she

would ask her mother why her parents moved back if they knew what was going on.

U.N. Youth Assembly Speech Malala Yousafzai has the best example of rhetoric

use because of all the pathos. She had lived through a traumatic event that was to

cause her not to speak anymore, but only that made her much more willing to speak up

for her and everyone. Malala was speaking for her and how we need to have equality

for women too. The Taliban had shot her to keep her quiet. Only with this, it made her

voice much louder. In her speech, she had used so much pathos. She had used pathos

because she was shot herself. She knows what it feels for people trying to keep her

quiet. Her speech was such a successful speech because it made so many people

speak. Her speech persuaded so many other people to speak up for what they believe

in. This speech made so many people stand up with her for the quality that women

deserve to have.
