Speaking rubric for fluency activities

Tips for giving feedback on the fluency activities

There are several kinds of fluency activities suggested as a follow up (see Step 6 of the
Lesson Plan) for each video segment:

• role playing, taking parts of the characters

• interviewing a character from the video
• sharing reactions and opinions
• debating different sides of an issue
• providing a summary
• paraphrasing selected parts of the video
• providing a “critical review” of the segment
• carrying out a group survey based on the topic

Before you begin the fluency activity, make sure students understand the task and their
roles. Modify the task and the roles to fit your students’ interests and abilities. Give a
time limit. As students begin the activity, be sure to provide language support as
needed.

After the students have done the fluency activity in pairs and small groups, allow some
students to try the activity in front of the whole class. If you wish to use this activity for
evaluation purposes, be sure to make notes about each student’s performance – include
some “strong points” and “weak points”. You can include notes about vocabulary,
grammar, and pronunciation, as well as overall fluency (smoothness and confidence)
and interaction (clarity and use of conversation management strategies).

For a more formal evaluation, write out your notes and give each student a rating. You
can use the sample 1-4 rating scale given here, which provides simple descriptions for
vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, fluency, and interaction. The purpose of this kind
of evaluation is to give fair and clear feedback to the students, and to give students
some specific points to work on to improve their fluency.

A sample speaking rubric has been provided on page 2, and a rubric to be filled out can
be found on page 3.

Yes, I like all types of arts, modern art, ancient art, cultural art, performance art, etc. The fact

or the special way a chef creates a delicacy. I believe art is a beautiful thing and that it is
greatest form of human expression.
I love art! I love sketching... I also love graffiti art although I haven’t tried it yet. I love the

If you want to talk about playground legends, the conversation begins right there. Demetrius
"Hook" Mitchellis the legend. You can hear all the stories in the world, but you'll never
believe it until you see it. He's done inhuman stuff, unreal stuff.
Hook was by far the best player to come out of Oakland. Demetrius Hook Mitchell is the
Bay's most notorious legend. Every cat with at least minimal knowledge of playground ball
has a Hook Mitchell story. The tales of his leaping ability are common place. Jumping over
cars, bikes and people wasn't no thing to Hook. Before his descent into narcotics hell, Hook
was nothing but heavenly. If he'd just kept his head straight, he'd be in the league right now,
dominating.
Unfortunately, Hook lives in a prison cell now and in other folks' memories.
Several NBA stars who also grew up in Oakland, including Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, Antonio
Davis, Drew Gooden, and Brian Shaw, all of whom played with Mitchell on the streets, and
were astonished by his skills, but were unable to help him avoid his sorry fate. They describe
his unstable home life and the longing for community that drove him to the streets. Mitchell
himself is shown playing prison league games, and is surprisingly still able to play above the
rim.
His story, like others, was written on courts between the West and East Bay.

There are some teachers, who hardly ever make an impact on, or touch someone’s life for the
better. Some just go through life teaching. As I look backon my days at my primary school, I
remember what an impact this woman had on my life. We used to call her Mrs. Wu,who was
a mid-aged lady, out of fashion and always tied her hairs in a bun.
Mrs. Wu was my elementary general music teacher. She would have us sing songs at circle
time and use music as a transition tool. There was never a dull moment in her classroom.
She brightened my path to become a teacher myself. I always find myself using their
techniques in my classroom. I could almost say that I learned all the basic skills I needed for
my career from a very pleasant lady. It was then that I was sure I wanted to be a music teacher.
I still keep in touch with her today.
the man with receding hairline is my favorite childhood teacher.发际线越来越往后,秃头中
even today I still could remember what she looked like, she had deep dimples(深深的酒窝),
narrow eyes(眯眯眼,一条线很窄的眼睛) and always tied a pony tail(马尾辫).
My teacher was not a handsome guy, with a simple crew cut(平头)and in average size(普通

Part 1. 部分答案:

How do people in China celebrate birthdays?

Throw a party, have birthday gatherings, most people acknowledge their birthday, but they
don't actually celebrate it. (Banners, balloons, cakes, candles...)
中国人怎么过生日?有些人开生日聚会 birthday gatherings,邀请很多人来庆祝,有些人
则不庆祝 don't celebrate it

How do you like to celebrate your birthday?

I'd like to...get some gifts and have cake and stuff. Or make a long trip toEurope with my
girlfriend.
Leap year, once every four years I'm able to celebrate my birthday on the 29th Feb.
你想怎么过生日?这个问题太好回答了,可以自由发挥想象力。可以吃蛋糕、开聚会或
者到欧洲去旅游。如果有人是闰年的二月二十九日 leap year 出生的就比较有趣了,生日
每四年过一次 once every four years 。

What did you do on your last birthday?

Went out and got drunk, got showered with gifts, went shopping... went to Beijingnew
oriental school to improve mylanguage ability.
Are birthdays more important for children or for adults? Children. You enjoy growing upas a
child, but despise aging as an adult.
小孩过生日可以享受成长的乐趣:enjoy growing up
For children and for older people it's important, for middle aged guys I think it's not that
important, coz generally they are too busy with work or being a parent....but in retirement it's
important again because that is a chance they get to see family.....
老人对生日也比较看重,因为他们可以借这个机会见到全家人:get to see family

Do you like to celebrate your birthday with your family or your friends?
Friends, because you can be yourself anddo crazy things together.
和朋友们一起庆生要比和父母一起约束少一些,因为可以做自己 be yourself,同时还能
借机疯狂一下:do crazy things
Well...it's difficult to choose ONE answer...but honestly, I like celebrating with both of them.

You should say:

what this part of your personal character is like
how it affects your life or work

An important aspect of my personal character is that I’m a responsible person. I think the
definition of responsibility is how you keep to your words and never let go of your duties

I remember when I was in University , I had to take care of my little brother, when I was
taking care of him, I never let him out of my sight, another instance is my responsibility at
work, I always fulfill my duties to the best of my abilities and always take extra precautions
to ensure everything is done well. I think this character has a major influence on my life, it
allows me to perform very well in everything I do and I am trusted by others, others view me
as a person that’s really dependable.
The main reason I think responsibility is quite important is because it’s the most basic thing
for a successful person, success comes from your attitude towards your work, in addition it
shows that I’m a disciplined person and I have my rulebook.

2. Describe a Broken Thing.

You should say:
what it is
what it looks like
why it is broken
and explain how you would like to repair it.

When I was a child, I’m too curious about the washing machine in my home, especially when
it was working.
Well, it was an old-fashioned yellow machine shaped like a rectangular block and my mom
usually used a cloth to cover it.
On day, my mom went out after running the washing machine and told me not to touch it.
There was no doubt that the curiosity led me to open the bottom of it quickly after my mom’s
leaving. Surprisingly, a scream created by the machine scared me and then it shivered
seriously for a while. At last, it stopped.
Since my mom would return soon, I was really afraid about being punished. I tried to repair it
by pressing the different buttons on it randomly. I restarted it, removed the powerand
connected it again. I was about to try everything I could, but it still didn’t work. The lucky
thing was that my mom didn’t punish me but just tell me the rule of never open the bottom
when it was on work.

When I was a little boy, most afternoons I used to play Hopscotch with my friends in our
neighborhood.
It's pretty easy. We draw grids (squares most often) on the sidewalk or on the ground. After
that, you have to hop into each square, from one end of the grid to the other. for example, we
draw 8 squares on the floor, u starting with square 1 and ending in square 8.
If there are two squares together, you jump landing with one foot in each square; but if there
is only one square, you must hop on one foot.
The game has some rules. If any of the following things happen, the player has to stop and
another player takes a turn.
The player can't put his/her foot or feet on the lines of the square.
The player can't jump with two feet in every single square
The player can't fall down.
It is nice to remember playing games like hopscotch because it reminds me that I had a happy
childhood surrounded by special people who always loved me

Describe a good law in your country.
You should say
• what the law is
• how you first learned about this law
• who benefits from this law(or, who is affected by this law)
and explain why you think this is a good law.

Well, the law I want to tell you is quite simple, stating like drivers are not allowed driving on
the road after drinking alcohols. Strictly, we could not regard it as a new law since it has
existed for long contained in the Transportation Regulations. But the fact is that the
implement is not enough.
Personally, I’m not able to drive and I got to know the law by my father. More specifically
speaking, I realized it through the depression expression of my Dad. I remembered that one
day my Dad announced that he would never drive if he had to drink. It’s the first time that I
saw the poker face seems to be unhappy, and asked me to supervise him.
Of course my Mom and I treated it as a good law for the clearly seen benefits. First of all, the
security of lifewould be guaranteed and also the relatives of those drivers wouldn’t be worried
about any more. Meanwhile, the transportation system improved a lot by the law since fewer
accidents and congestions would happen. But the police should have to do more than before.
It’s said that trace of alcohol in your blood would be treasured by the special equipment. The
misdemeanor would withdrawal of the driving license while the felony would be sentenced to
detainin the police station. Such penalty will definitely make drivers behave well.
Consequently, traffic jams will reduce and be easier to live in the city.

Part 2. 答案
1. Describe the type of film you most enjoy watching.
You should say:
what this type is
what the characteristics of this type are
when you last watched this type
and explain why you like this type.

Among all types of films, I like war films best.

The first obvious feature of war films is that it involves at least one hero in the story, who is
often brave, smart and unselfish. In addition, the battle scenes which involve large number of
soldiers, planes and weapons vividly present a picture of what wars were actually like.
Recently, I watched a war film named Assembly directed byt he famous Chinese director
Feng Xiaogang. It was a drama about a soldier of a People's Liberation Army unit during the
civil war in the 1940s. The soldier, once a company commander, devotes his life to redeeming
the honor of fellow soldiers who are declared missing in action. The film has been called the
Chinese version of “Saving Private Ryan”, and indeed, the film looks like seriously brutal
stuff.
I like war films first because I can learn more about history through watching this kind of film.
And I am especially interested in historic wars and battles, like the battle of Somme and so on.
War films present to us a vivid picture of how brutal a war can be. Besides, I can appreciate
the bravery and unselfishness of those heros in war films, like the captain in the Hollywood
hit Saving Private Ryan.

Do many people in China have their own garden?

中国,有些人有自己的花园。有些住楼房的人却没有。无论如何我们都可以回答这个问
题。
Yes. Many home owners landscape their yards & even grow their own vegetables & herbs as

Almost everyone grows something. If they don't have a home with land, they may have
window boxes on their flat windows or a terrace or rooftop in which they use containers to
"garden".
They may have a collection of foliage or flowering houseplants strewn around their home.
There are those who use stands to "garden".

If someone has a private garden in China, do they usually prefer to grow flowers or
vegetables?
Doesn't it depend on the person?I grow flowers in the front and tomatoes in the back of the
house. Most of us grow our vegetables in the back yard because it's more attractive to plant
the decorative flowers in the front.

Do Chinese people like growing flowers?

1. Describe a TV program that you watched but didn't like.

You should say:
what program it was
when you saw it
what it was about
and explain why you didn't like it.

Well, you know that the most Chinese people are really couch potatoes and have a high
requirement of TV programs. There are some significant programs, but simultaneously we
cannot prevent to watch some junks. Personally, I never watched the competition and reality
show or the talent show in order to find new solo singing talent like the Super Girl in China or
the American Idol in US.
About 5 years ago I firstly watched the program of Super Girls. Initially, I just thought it to be
a newish method for someone ached to be a superstar. This type of programs always had a
similar series of principles, which was developed by the end fall into disuse.
But during the past several years they were surprisingly the main and almost unique trend of
entertainment programs. However this was not the worst thing. Actually, they only warmed
over the contents again and again and again, too much on TV but couldn’t find one that really
held your interest for long. The quality of the reality programs were down straightly since
they were all unoriginal, obnoxious, and out of touch.
Another negative influence of watching this type of shows was that they led teenagers to
wrong values, which didn’t attach importance to effort, wisdom and knowledge. After all,
success is earned by efforts rather than talents or picked good lucks.

It seems like a lot of people on here have the mindset that all mainstream music today is bad.
Well yeah, a lot of it is, and not many soul artists anymore, but I think it's ridiculous to say
that all of it sucks. Actually, nowadays in China there is a new kind of music find its way to
the ears of youth. That’s a kind of pop music, using some elements absorbing from the
religious music.
Talking about this sort of special pop music, I’d have to say that Sadingding is extremely
talented. She’s gotten pretty popular with her song “alive”, in two different versions. One is in
Chinese, the other is in Sanskrit which is a typical language of Buddhist. Since Sadingding’s
album released, they were available in Internet, CD stores TV and radio.
Several years ago, the popular styles of music have to be pop in China. For the majority, they
only took fancy of two groups of singers. Inland might be Jay and abroad should be Michael
Jackson respectively. Although there’s still long way to go for the new style to be accepted by
more people, it’s glad to see some youth, teenagers who are not tone deaf, they start to touch
them initially.
For one side some people harbor the idea that pop music is philistinism, in bad taste, the other
side some unusual music like the real religious are horrible, not easy to understand. But this
kind of music solved all sides of problems because it came from religious music. It is
inspirationaland moving and has none of the sex, drugs, and violence of secular mainstream
songs. Nothing more beautiful than the harmony of voices without all that "noise" from
instruments as we sing praises to God. Perfect whatever.

Part 1. 部分答案:

Do you often write things? What do you usually write?

That depends on the situation.
When I write memo to colleagues, it's work related.
When I write an email to a friend, it's about personal stuff.
When I write a love letter, it's all sweet and passionate.
When I write my diary, it's to clarify my mind.
I don't write books. I don't write poems. I don't write songs.

Do you prefer to write by hand or write using the computer?

I prefer writing by hand. It's much more personal and it feels a lot nicer receiving a
handwritten letter than it does getting an email.
I like writing on the computer because it's fun, faster than handwriting and you don't have to
worry bout spelling as much!
I prefer computer, because it's faster and readable.

Do you think computers might one day replace handwriting?

Yes. Very likely! I can't remember when I last time wrote down more than a few words in
handwriting. Probably back in university several years ago. I even use the computer for
brainstorming.
Yes. I think computers will cause the art of handwriting, letter writing, etc. to become a thing
of the past. People are too lazy to pick up a pen, these days, it seems like a lot of kiddies can
type faster than they can write.
No. some people write fantastic emails, its not all one liners and text speak, so the skills are
there, letters will stay around, they have more meaning now as they take more effort. Just as
TV didn't kill radio, email won't kill letters. Problem is most letters are written on the
computer and then printed out.

When do children begin to write in your country?

They are supposed to be able to read and write their ABC's by the time they hit the
kindergarten or preschool. (5 years old)
All kids are different, generally in the Scotland most kids start to learn writing at the age of
about 3 or 4, if they go to nursery, at school its 4 or 5.
As soon as they can hold the crayon, this can be before schooling even begins!

Do you think handwriting is very important (nowadays)?

NO. NO. NO! My handwriting is HORRIBLE, but it's not about ability, it's about care. Why
is doctors' handwriting infamously atrocious? Because they have better things to worry about.
No. I do have some prejudices about people taking care of themselves but not about
handwriting, this is innocent, I can't judge by the cover.
No it's not important. But I have had situations when I had to fill in forms such as bank
applications for loans and even during an interview session. It felt weird and my hand cramps

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 3
EnglishPartner 口语同桌
easily.
Well, all in all, it depends on what you do. If your work requires using PC, handwriting
should not be that important.
Yes. I do believe handwriting does reflect personality to quite an extent because a person with
a good mind cannot tolerate his handwriting to be untidy for sure, he or she will somehow
manage to have a good handwriting. If it is not, I won't consider them as bad person, but
would not have a good impression on them at once.

How can children today improve their handwriting?

Practice makes perfect, allow them time to write slowly and let them know how they could
possibly improve and rewards for best handwriting....jus sum motivational techs should work.
You write some letters and have them critique you. Have fun practicing both of yours letters
together. Maybe some fun practices might get them enjoying practicing. Each person is
different, its best to at least try to get them to improve, the schools don't seem to care much
anymore.
First, you trace a perfect model, and then you try to write it about 10 times. That's what we
did in my penmanship class.
Let them be kids and have them develop their own handwriting patterns on their own. One
day they can write legibly themselves.

Part 2. 答案

1. Describe a (useful) skill you recently learned.

You should say:
what the skill is/was
where you learned it
how you learned it
and explain how you think this skill will be useful in the future.

I recently learned how to drive. Driving is a useful skill because it allows me much greater
mobility. I do not have to rely on public transportation or friends give me a lift to the places
that I need to go. The bus is so crowded! Also, I am always fighting against the clock when I
am on the bus—sometimes if there is a traffic jam I can be stuck on the bus for an hour. I am
just not able to let that much time slip away.
I learned to drive a couple of months ago, so I am still a little bit green; I'm still a beginner.
Learning to drive was not exactly a piece of cake. Sometimes I like to let my mind wander, so
I have to really focus on keeping my eyes on the road. It was a good learning experience.
I learned to drive both by taking a class and by practicing with my parents in the car. The
class was a bore but the practical training was fun. I always looked forward to getting behind
the wheel to practice my driving. I practiced by often taking my mom's car for a spin.
However, because I was still learning, my mom always insisted that she tag along. My mom

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 4

was always a backseat driver on these trips so sometimes it was frustrating to always have her
tell me exactly how to drive.
This skill will be very useful in the future. It will allow me to be much more independent. I
won't have to be at the mercy of my parents when I want to go somewhere the bus does not go
to. I just have to make sure that I do not get a speeding ticket. My parents say that if I get a
ticket I will have to pay for all of it and that my parents will take the keys away for a week. If
you ask me, this is just a slap on the wrist. So, I flirt with the speed limit sometimes, but I
usually drive under the limit—especially if there are traffic cops around. I know where all of
the big speed traps are in my city so I can stay one up on the traffic patrolmen. All in all, I
think this will be one of the most important skills for my future. I wouldn't trade my driving
license for all the tea in China.

but indeed it was just part of it. After I attended to the primary school, I was able to read the

literatures.
The skeleton of the story is Xuanzang's quest to bring back Buddhist scriptures, from Vulture
Peak in India, but the flesh is provided by the conflict between Xuanzang's disciples, and the
various evils that beset him on the way. One of his disciples called Sun Wukong was really
resourceful. He was a monkey born from a stone and learned 72 types of transformations.
With the protection from the monkey and another 3 disciples, Xuanzang succeed to reach the
destination at the end of the story.

Part 1. 部分答案:

What do you think, "happiness" is? 你对幸福的定义是什么?

Happiness is a fleeting feeling that mankind always yearns to have.
Happiness is self defined.....There is no universal definition.
I would define happiness as the fulfillment of our desires. First we want something, then we
seek it, and eventually we get fulfilled by it.
Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if
you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you
Happiness is such a blessing with which everyone is blessed. But people don't realize that
thing. They always surround themselves with unhappiness and problems and then later blame
it on god and to their destiny that happiness never comes their way.

Do you think happiness is very important?

important?幸福重要么?
Happiness it is not acquired or gained...it's something that is deep inside.
The fundamental reason why happiness is so important is that it’s extremely vital to our own
goals in life and can help us achieve many other cherished personal ambitions and goals.

What do you think makes people feel happy?happy?是何使人幸福?

Many people make the mistake of believing that they don’t deserve happiness and accept their
unhappy state as their destiny. The truth of the matter is that happiness, like anything else in
life, needs to be nurtured.
Surround yourself with happy people. It is easy to begin to think negatively when you are
surrounded by people who think that way. Conversely, if you are around people who are
happy their emotional state will be infectious.
Finding the humor in situations can also lead to happiness.
For happiness to be attained, it’s important to be open and willing to the concept that it can be
attained. For us to do this, we need to rid ourselves of the negative energies which occur in
our lives on a regular basis

Do you think money plays an important part in people's happiness?

happiness?金钱对幸福是否有
很大影响?
No, I don't think it is the key to happiness. All money can do is to give you more
opportunities to enjoy material items, entertainment, and ease the burden that relates to stress
and bills.
Well, I know that if I had a lot of money I sure would be a lot happier! But it couldn't keep me
happy forever.

Do you think people's wealth and their happiness are related?

related?财富与幸福是否有关?
Money and happiness , in anyplace at any time to anybody , the two always have countless
ties .金钱和幸福,在任何地方任何时间对于任何人而言,两者总是有千丝万缕的关系。

Money can not only satisfy one’s material necessities but also can meet one’s spiritual needs

1. Describe an interesting story you saw on TV.

You should say:
what the story was

I'm pretty sure everyone got a clue of what "The Terminator" is about.
The story is about the war between Human and Cyborgs: A terminator is sent from the future
to prevent John Connor being borned. John Connor is the leader of those who fight against the
terminators. The terminator's job is then to hunt down the mother of the leader, Sarah Connor.
I first saw the film version at the age of six or seven and unsurprisingly it confused me. A few
years later I caught it again on Television and loved it. I was browsing through New Oriental
School's video stores a few months ago and it caught my eye and brought me back to
childhood.
This is the most groundbreaking action TV back in the day. The story develops quickly and
each character is different. I watched closely to understand what's happening and there's no
way you could fall asleep. There are good performances and tons of humorous bits throughout
the episodes that lighten up such a suspenseful, frightening story.
"Terminator" is an impressive masterpiece because it offers me food for meditation. Science
now performs miracles like the gods of old, creating life from blood cells, or bacteria, or a
spark of metal. But those are perfect creatures. And in that way, they couldn't be less human.
We appreciate beauty, create art, obviously we all have weak moments, moments where we
lose faith. But it's our flaws, our weaknesses, that make us human. There are things machines
will never do.

OK, let me talk about the national costume of Japan:Kimono

Kimono are T-shaped, straight-lined robes that fall to the ankle, with collars and wide,
full-length sleeves. There are different types of kimono for different occasions and seasons,
including those worn by men.
Kimono can be found in many places in Japan but people have to pay through the no seas
they cost an arm and a leg. A decent silk kimono will set you back the best part of a million
yen.
Kimonos are a much less common sight these days and are usually only seen worn by older
people or on special occasions. A few older women and even fewer men still wear kimono on
a daily basis. I wear kimono when I was in Japan most often at weddings, tea ceremonies, and
other very special or very formal occasions.
Why wear Kimono? It's very rich---you experience a lot of culture and you get such a world
of thoughts that go with it. It's not just the feeling that you get from wearing kimono, but the
natsukashi(nostalgic). Also, it's always fun to dress up, and you get different reactions from
people. The long and the short, it's fun, fashionable and infused with tradition. What better
reasons could there be?

Inventor William Gray invented the phone booth after realizing the difficulty of placing a

A telephone booth is a small structure furnished with a payphone and designed for a telephone
user's convenience. The user of the booth pays for the call by depositing coins into a slot on
the telephone or by using a telephone card.
More than a century has passed and now the telephone booth is seen almost everywhere. It
has even become the art in some condition. However, with the rapid growth of the Internet the
use of mobile telephone, the traditional telephone booth will probably fade out. And

Many years ago i once wrote a love letter to a girl - a Pisces girl.I remember I sent her
favorite orchids with my handwritten love letter attached.
She became my girlfriend not too long after she received my letter. I guess she really liked the
way how the letter was written. It was more of poetry than prose. I poured all my love and
affection like sweet real orange juice to a shiny glass. She decided to have the love letter read
by all her dorm mates it was passed from one hand to another and she was so proud of it and
she even framed it like it were the picture of a saint.N
O
Why I wrote this letter? It's a love letter, surely because I loved her. I can explain a bit why I
handwrote it. Sometimes a thoughtful handwritten letter is just what a girl needed, and it is
sometimes better then an email. I just think it takes more effort to sit down to write and then
send it through regular mail. That makes it more special. For a girl, it's satisfying to hold a
letter written by a boy's hand, and it's lovely that the boy took the time and care to do so.
Nowadays, people tend to write letter by computers, there was a time, not so long ago, when
letter writing was a real craft.

They call me xxx for short, or sometimes just "darling", it's such a sweet sentiment.

How are babies given their names in China?

The parents think about how they want their child to be recognized... and then go from there.
Maybe they want something unique, traditional, family-oriented, etc.
Some people waited until the baby was born and evaluated her personallity, and applied a
name accordingly.
People have always showed particular concern for the meaning, appearance and sound when
they name children. It is expected that a name given by the father or grandfather carries their
wish, hope, pursuit, aspiration, generation, etc. This name must be rich in the name-giver ’s
wish or intention and it should also be pleasant in form and sound.
I know some people choose to name their children after family members, either living or
deceased. For westerner, If they are Christian, they may name their child after someone in the
Bible--John, Luke, Simon, Micah, Rebecca, etc. If they are Catholic, they may choose to
name their child after a particular saint.我知道有些人以家里的成员起名,不论是否在世。

Yes, when people get married in the past, or if they don't like their names, or their parents
divorced, or they don't like their family... there are many reasons someone would change their
names.

The Beauty ---- Mandarin ducks

I happened to meet the Mandarin Ducks over the years in the wild area of Ampere Garden, in
ponds along the big drainage. And, I'm 100% sure they were not normal Ducks. It was 'in the
wild' and free to fly off whenever it wanted to!
The male mandarin duck is way more colorful, his breast is purple with two vertical white
bars and the flanks ruddy, with two orange “sails” at the back. The female is similar to female
Wood Duck, all dark green brown. Male Mandarin ducks are considered by many to be the
most beautifully colored of all waterfowl.
In China, the mandarin duck is associated as a Chinese weddings symbol, because it
symbolizes wedded bliss and fidelity. A Chinese proverb for loving couples uses the
Mandarin Duck as a metaphor: “Two mandarin ducks playing in water”. Mandarin ducks are
always depicted in a pair – it is said that if the ducks were separated, they would pine for each
other and die of loneliness. Dying of loneliness for love might only be a romantic myth and a
cheerful reflection of people's attitude to reality.
I love these lovely creatures; I wish I could raise one.

Part 1. 部分答案:

What are the different ways people get news?

Mass media is the most important channel through which we get the news. Newspapers, TV,
Radio and magazines. Nowadays, Internet offers us a much easier access to the information.
Sometimes our friends like to talk about daily events, which provides another way for us to
get news.

What types of news do you like?

从传播渠道上分:TV news, Radio News, Internet News.......
I prefer TV news to the radio news. I can get a better understanding of the news on TV
because I can see the vivid pictures and images. In addition, I feel more convinced of the
news through watching some TV interviews.
从新闻内容上分:Local, Entertainment, Finance, Sports, Politics...
I prefer local news. because it relates to my day to day stuff. To see if there are any crimes in
my area I need to be aware of, to know what the weather will be like, & to see if there's any
good show in town.
I like international news because I like to keep up-to-date about what's going on in the world
in case I'm going on vacation, or need to do business abroad. I also like it because it teaches
me about other cultures and that way learn a lot about human psychology.

Do you think children like (= are interested in) the news? (Why?/Why not?)
No I don't think they are interested because it is so depressing and kids look for humor in TV
also they would be too young to understand what was going on.
There could be an announcement on the News about a Nuclear Bomb being on its way here
and a lot of people would still stay , they are like: "Pooh, turn it over....... Its all doom and
gloom on the news." (Doom and gloom: A deeply pessimistic outlook or feeling. 悲观,黯
淡.)

Are old people and young people interested in the same (kinds of) news?
If they aren't, they should be. A young person can learn so much from a senior, and a senior
can learn a lot from a young person also. But on average, I would say kids like stuff about
sports music and entertainment more than seniors do.
It really depends on the individual and not their age. For example: I know young people who
are very interested in global events and some elderly interested in celebrity watching, and
vice-versa. It is individual preference. (vice-versa: 反之亦然.)

How does the news affect people?

News will affect people's expectations about the future. They will rearrange and adapt their
plans to the changes they get from the news. For instance, a large number of people keep an
eye on what's going on in the stock market..........
News influences people by only reporting certain things and leaving out parts that could
matter. One sided news or journalism isn't news but propaganda in my opinion. It's like the
good old saying Lela always mentioned: Some people would rather believe the lies of Satan

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 3
EnglishPartner 口语同桌
than the truth of God.

Part 2. 答案

1. Describe an item of clothing that you wear on special occasions.

You should say:
what this clothing looks like
where you bought it
on what special occasions you wear it
and explain why you wear it on special occasions.

After several tens of resumes sent out and waiting for weeks, I still can’t get any responses
from these companies. So that I got confused and really tended to be hot temper about go on
waiting. One day I read a piece of advice given by a website which was about to cope with
the puzzle I had. The highlighted title called Most Important Piece of Advice for Soon-to-be
Grads.
I was suddenly attracted by it and can’t help to click it. Then I realized that the advice was
offered by an experienced manager of a multinational corporation. It goes like,’Take your
schooling and responsibilities seriously. Because that is what a future employer is going to
judge you by. You might be able to 'get by' in school, but in the 'real world, that doesn't cut it
if you want to succeed.
Then I began to think in a totally different perspective of hunting a job. Before that I was just
afraid about losing any opportunities and never understood what requirements the employers
might have. I tried to revise my CVs and show my advantages to the best. Eventually, I was
admitted by an ideal company soon. I appreciate the advisable information very much.

Nowadays computer plays an essential role of individuals’ life because of its powerful
functions. When I was a freshman of my university, I joined the campus broadcasting station
and first got to know a kind of interesting software running on the computer from my senior
colleagues. It’s called adobe audition, which is a kind of audio editing program developed and
published by Adobe Systems Incorporation. The skillful and useful software helped me a lot
ever since.
At the very beginning, I thought it to be pretty risky since there is overwhelming amount of
buttons and features available. But after you practiced for several times, you were able to
recognize all usage of the tools. And it would be quite possible for you to edit your own voice
harmonized with different sound effects if you got the hang of the basic functions of the
software.
On the day before my mother’s birthday, I made a decision to make a special present for her. I
recorded my voice with a microphone attached to my laptop, containing some best wishes and
even a ‘happy birthday’ song. Then I invited my friends, each one with a short period of
words speaking to my mom. The last step was to mix down them all together. Consequently,
my mom loved it very much and deeply touched by my genuineness.
The skill of using computer to edit the audio can not only delight my mom, but also brought
conveniences to me. Sometimes using the software to edit the listening of English could help
me to learn English well. Adobe audition is a powerful thing and worth learning. It is

often brave, smart and unselfish. In addition, the battle scenes which involve large number of
soldiers, planes and weapons vividly present a picture of what wars were actually like.
Recently, I watched a war film named Assembly directed by the famous Chinese director
Besides, I can appreciate
the bravery and unselfishness of those heroes in war films, like the captain in the Hollywood
hit Saving Private Ryan.

1. Describe a Photograph
You should say:
who took the photo
when it was taken
where it was taken
and explain why you like it.

Intro:
I’m gonna talk about a photograph I took with my girlfriend when we were on vacation in
Bali .
Who:
Actually, I took the photo myself, I put (placed) a self-timer on my cam and ran back to pose
with my girlfriend. You know I’m bit of an amateur photographer myself, so I know a thing or
two about cameras.
When:
The photo was taken about two years ago when we decided to go to Bali during the spring
festival. Bali is a great getaway during the winter time because of its wonderful geographical
location.
Where:
It’s summertime all round the year in Bali. The picture was taken from the balcony of our
hotel room, the background of the pic was the beautiful blue sea and the white beaches of Bali,
although we weren’t exactly very photogenic in the picture, the view was awesome.
Why:
I really like this photo because it is a souvenir of the first trip I made with my girlfriend, it
marks one of those important milestones in our relationship, and every time I see the photo I
get a good laugh because we were making silly faces in the pic, so it’s a fun little
memorabilia.

Part 3: The Purposes of Photographs

Why do so many people like to take photographs (as a hobby)?
Jump on the bandwagon 赶时髦 IT things 流行的东西
The way I look at it , many people enjoy taking photos because they want to jump on the
bandwagon, you know right now, its one of those IT things to share pics through micro-blogs
so I see people constantly taking picture of interesting things they see experience and sharing
them on the internet.
Some people don't like taking photographs. Can you make any guesses about why?

Well, you’ve hit the mark, I’m one of those people who don’t like taking photos, I’m not a
photogenic person so every time I see myself in a photo , I feel so embarrassed , so I think it’s
a confidence-issue, you know people who aren’t confident aren’t really keen on taking pics.
Why do some people invade the privacy of celebrities by taking photographs of these
celebrities?
I feel that the main reason is because it’s quite lucrative, tabloids pay a lot of money for
intimate photos of celebs, if someone can get a shot of a big name caught in the act of doing
something provocative, they can become rich overnight, and I think the other reason is
because these photos make for great news topics as well.

Do you think news photographs are an important part of newspaper stories?
Of course, everyone loves seeing a visual portrayalof something they are reading, even if it’s
just a face, It satisfies people’s curiosity, I remember reading about an article talking about
people’s reaction to visual aids, it said that studies have shown, newspapers with a lot of pics
sell better than those with only text.

2. Describe a musical event you attended or saw on TV that you liked.

You should say:

A musical event that I attended was a piano concert held at the national theater, it was a New
Year’s event featuring China’s acclaimed pianist Lang Lang.
The event was held during the New Year’s celebration this year on New Years Eve, like I said,
the event was held at the national theater. The national theater is a wonderful place to listen to
a piano concert because of its wonderful acoustics and its facilities.
I really enjoyed this concert because I have always been a big fan of Lang Lang, he is
considered a musical genius in China. I’m a pianist myself so it was a chance for me to see a
master performing live. The power of his music was amplified by the theater itself and I had
the feeling of the music ringing in my ears and it just blew me away. At the end of the concert
Lang Lang received a standing ovation as he completed his last piece of the night.

Part 3. B

Do you think noise ever has any benefits?

Do you think noise can be considered to be a form of pollution?

Part 1. 部分答案:

Do you (usually) wear a watch (a wrist watch)? (Why?)

不戴表的,用手机!No I have my mobile with me; it’s got a nice watch in it.
戴表的!I know some people say that with mobile phones, the wrist watch is out-dated. I
disagree. A quick glimpse at your watch during a meeting or on the production line is a lot
better than pulling out your cell phone. I find a watch to still be the most convenient method
of time keeping.
戴表的,还戴得挺讲究!Yes, and I prefer to wear it on the inside of my wrist. I tend to
scratch and otherwise damage watches that I wear on the outside. Wearing them on the inside
prevents that.

What do you use your watch for?

用来计时的!I use it mainly for timing the speed.
用来装饰的!It’s a kind of ornament for me, actually. Wearing a watch has become more of a
fashion statement.
看时间的。For me, it is always about knowing what time it is...as a reporter, I need to keep
track of time...but I do care about style...and have always, since I began wearing a watch at
about age eight, chosen styles I like, without regard to what is "in style"...
又看时间又讲究装饰的。Part fashion, part convenience for me. I have a Baby-G and it's
digital. It's waterproof because I don't want to take it off when I shower or go swimming. It
also lights up so I can read it at night. It's in a cute style.

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 3
EnglishPartner 口语同桌
Do you think time is very important? (Why?)
时间是金钱!Time is money. Actually, time is more valuable than money. The money we
have lost can be gained again, but the time we have wasted cannot be regained.
不要浪费时间!Despite being so valuable, time is often neglected by people. Since time is an
invisible thing, people often waste their time unconsciously(无意地). Without anything to do,
they may gossip from morning till night.
时间是宝贵的!Time is important. Time is valuable. Time is precious.

Are you ever late for anything?

上班迟到的。Yes I had a few times late last week for work, but I didn’t get into big trouble
because most of the time I was early.
上学迟到想找借口的。I was late to school about 10 times so far this semester, which is going
to screw me out of college. I need to come up for some really good excuses.
上学迟到想弥补的。I made some mistakes this year in attendance; I am trying to find out if
there’s anything I can do to bring my grade up.

Do you think it's important to be on time?

绝对守时,迟到丢人!Yes. I always run on time and feel ashamed if I am late to anything. I
am not obsessed but feel that if you are invited somewhere you should show the host the
respect of being there when invited.. It just seems these days that nobody is on time and
running late is the norm.
分场合迟到的!No. It has become expected to turn up to an informal event five minutes late,
this is what most people do in America. However if punctuality is important for that event
then it is considered extremely rude to turn up late.
守时是美德,但聚会除外!Punctuality is a virtue. Oh, being late is RUDE, there is no doubt
about it. EXCEPT when going to a party -- then it's expected that you arrive a few minutes
late. In fact, the host probably WANTS you to arrive a bit late... I know when I'm hosting a
party, I'm always running around like crazy doing last minute things (like getting dressed!)
and if a guest actually arrives on time, I'm not ready! Be kind, arrive 5 or 10 minutes late...

Do you feel that time moves fast or slowly?

时间随年龄增长变快!Age and size make a difference to whether time moves fast or slow.
And thats not a matter of perception. The older you are, the faster times moves. Or, the faster
you are, the slower time moves.
时间比想象的过得快!Daily, I find myself looking back and not being able to remember
what happened, or how an event got so far away. A half a year seemed like two seconds. Even
when you think time will never pass...it passes faster than expected.
人生苦短,及时享乐。life is short, its so true. But dont dwell on how much time has past or
how fast the future is going to pass, just live you life. if you just live in the moment and have
random spontaneous moments it will seem like your life is fuller even if it goes by in a flash.
束手无策,用日记记录时间。I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately we can't stop
time, we can only make the most of it. Maybe try keeping a diary of what happens in your life
if you are having trouble remembering what's happened. That way you can look back and
reminisce on good times:)

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 4
EnglishPartner 口语同桌

When do you feel time moves slowly? (Why?)

伤心孤独时度日如年!When I'm alone and/or depressed time moves slowly for me...very
slowly. When I'm with my girlfriend/family (sometimes-they can be a pain in the rear ya
know?)/friends time moves fast.
等待的时候度日如年!I guess it really depends if you are doing something you enjoy or not.
Also if you are waiting for something, time will move slow. If you are having a good time and
want to cherish that moment and have it last forever-time is slipping by faster then you can
blink. Time is never in your favor.
儿时等待长大,度日如年。When I was a child, I felt time moves slowly. Because as a child I
had so little control over my own destiny, over my own life and i spent a great deal of time
waiting for growing up.

If you could go back in time, would you do?

不受欺负型!I would not let that boy from school bully me in my youth...i would also crush
my self esteem and make it impossible for me to feel love or make new friends for fear of
never being good enough..
改变历史型!That's an interesting question. Maybe I would go back and try to change
something in history. Or, maybe I'd go back to my history.
不想回到过去型!Even if there was a such device...things would change in a parallel universe
to ours...The past is history , future is a mystery...that is why we are living in the present.
戒烟戒酒型!I would stay away from alcohol. its my best friend and worst enemy.
超级自恋型!I would go back, give my teen self a hug and tell her that she is beautiful,
unique and special and that one day she will meet a guy who will love her just the way she is
so she should just keep being true to herself and not do dumb things in order to get people to
like her.
绝不后悔型!I would do the same thing all over again...I am proud of what i have done and of
my achievements....
人生因果论!None. I wouldn't give myself any advice. I am one of those people that believe
that everything happens for a reason. I would never want to change anything about my life.
Life lessons are important, especially the ones that brought me pain.

Part 2. 答案

1. Describe a library that you know.

You should say:
where it is
when you went there
what books and facilities this library has
and explain what you like or dislike about this library.

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 5
EnglishPartner 口语同桌

When you went there?

Just yesterday I finally got a book that someone else had out until their last possible due date.
I saw that I went from first on the list to it being available and I picked it up last night.
The public librarian who showed me when I was ten, how to use a card catalogue, and
recommended Anne of Green Gables. That feeling of warmth and welcome. The quiet. The
way aisles smelled of leather and hardwood. That first realization that I would never know all
there was to know.
Well, talking about library memories.........
The most fond one I have is of my grade 10 one. My school had just finished renovating and
the library was new. It was my last year at that school. We had our last literature lesson there
and had also enacted our last play there as a class.
What books and facilities this library has?
My school library stinks, but I love the public library. they have the most comfortable couches
ever. you can sit there and read all day, because no one really ever goes there.
All the classics, of course- from Shakespeare to Fitzgerald.
- A careful selection of contemporary texts: novels, short story collection, plays and poetry.
Not necessarily the texts that sell well, but those with literary merit.
- A proper, big encyclopedia.
- A selection of non-fictional texts, such as biographies of important people (Gandhi,
Napoleon, Mother Teresa etc.), travelogues, essays etc.
- Literature for each school subject- basic works about chemistry, physics, languages, politics
etc.
Apart from the books, I'd like to see a number of non-paper based media, such as audio books,
music CDs, DVDs, software etc.
Along with all the classics (Bronte, Hemingway, Shakespeare etc.) I would also add books for
reluctant readers, like the Lovely Bones or Nick Horn by novels. And lots of poetry and books
for the 'troubled kids' like Ellen Hopkins.
Well, the classics, of course. Jane Eyre, The Arabian Nights, Pride and Prejudice, a Separate
Peace, etc. Also, I'd stock up on Stephen King (though I don't read his stuff - I get too scared -
he's an amazing author).
Each of the guest rooms is decorated with contemporary furnishings and natural colours. If
you prefer, you can also just sit on the sofa and browse through one of the library books.
Explain what you like or dislike about this library?
My library has a website and I can reserve books any time I can get internet access. My
library card number has an account and I can check there for when my book becomes
available.
Put the books you want on hold or reserve so when they come in the library can notify you
and you go pick them up and you can read them. You can also get the library to get books
from surrounding libraries to reserve books for you. That is how I get some of my research
books.
I get books from all over the country and I live in a rural area. I catalog and research antique
violins and sometimes I need specific books that are very hard to find and certain library or
university libraries will loan their books.

外教一对一 淘宝店:口语同桌 6
EnglishPartner 口语同桌
I can call ahead and reserve the books for whenever they are available. Then, when they get
them in, they'll tell you and you can go get them. Most libraries will do this for you. I'd also
try calling into other libraries like you said you are on the outskirts of a larger city.
Most libraries let you reserve the books you want. That'll put you on the waiting list so you're
guaranteed to get the book when it gets checked back in.
The librarians are doing a good job by letting you check out the books you want, to check out,
so you will go home with them.

Well, there was a pub called the ‘wall pub’ not far from my home which was located in the
downtown of my city. A day during last Spring Festival holiday, a group of my friends
dragged me along to the pub. So my first impression of a pub came out by accident.
When I entered the pub, I was immediately shocked by a mixed noise. Especially the music
played at high sound level was about to deafen my ears, and as can be thought, the styles are
always disco, rock, or heavy metal. What was more, whistling, yelling, laughing could be
heard at any time. You were able to hear all sorts of conversation around you, typically could
pick up a few words here and there but it's mostly just noise music.
Exactly, even if I was sleeping or reading books at home, the disturbance of the noise from
the pub bothered me so much. Sleep disruption, the masking of speech and television, and the
inability to enjoy our property or leisure time also impaired the quality of life. The noise from
the pub near my home always shattered the peace of the night, my whole family was badly
affected. In some respects, we are all hearing impaired on a daily basis. That was really a
nightmare.

1. Describe a river in your hometown.

You should say:

and explain why you like this river.

Yangchuan River is located between Lake Tai and the Yangtze River and crosses the boundary
of three cities in Suzhou. It totally has a surface area of about 20square kilometers. So
specifically, it is a freshwater lake about 3kilometers northeast of the town of Suzhou in
Jiangsu Province. Actually, it is a bit something called the landmark of Suzhou.
Refer to the Yangchuan River; I can clearly remember that there was a story of the traditional
Peking Opera related to it in its history. It is called Sha Jia Bang, which was a group for
land guarding consisting of some locals. And the creek is the birthplace of the legend.
I like the river is not just for the long history, the admirable ancestors. Honestly, I am deeply
charmed by one of the lake’s aquatic produces—the Chinese mitten crab – a hairy animal. The
crabs migrate from Ranching Lake to the Yangtze River Delta for mating in September and
October. Local fishermen harvest the crabs and sell them as a delicacy in market. Because its
yummy taste and rich protein contained, the total production of the crab reached several
thousand tons each year.

2. Describe a school you enjoyed going to when you were a child.

You should say:
where it was
what the other students were like
what the teachers were like
and explain what you enjoyed during your time at this school.

If I choose a school to describe, absolutely it would be my primary school in my hometown

where I spent as long as six years with my dear schoolmates. The full name of my elementary
school is a little bit long and I found it is hard to memory, called the Primary School Attached
Beijing Normal Schoolwhich had a fragrant fameamong all the schools training children.
We had an overall five grades and each grade had just four classes. I still remembered that I
was in class four studying with another 49 students. At that time we had no sophisticated
relationships, no burdens of homework and every boy and girl are naïve and shared happiness
and sorrows with each other.
My Chinese literature teacher as well as the head teacher in my classwas a young woman who
just graduated from college. In the other words, we are her first students in her teaching career.

She was energetic and laughed a lot. The important point was that she was a responsible
teacher who really took care of every student, not biased.

Well, it was treated as a wanted school for the field trips of some local normal graduates
which was our particular feature. Because these teachers were not really ready in the position,
so they were not so strict when teaching. They were more like the real friends, or elder sisters
or brothers of us. We played shuttlecocks together with them, boys preferred to have a
football match with these teachers. The playing time with them made my day!

Speaking of the ideal home that I would like to live in... Err... It must be in suburban area, far
away from the noise, hustle & bustle of the outside world.
Flat, Terraced, Detached or Semi-detached, whatever type of house it would be as I don't
really care. It must be spacious & bright, this is what I focus on. I hate being in a dark
cramped room with a low ceiling, I will be hyperventilating.
I would love to decorate my house lovingly, as well as casual. I'd like to put lots of posters
into a picture frame to hang on a wall, and I'd also like to put some hooks up and lay musical
instruments across the hooks.
It'd be quiet, comfortable and private, like a cozy heaven. The blue walls make me think of
the calming vast seas that relax me. The base boards and shutters are white which remind me
of the pure white clouds in the sky. The white in my room helps me to have pure and clean
thoughts. Soft muted colors of the walls and bright colors of the accents make me feel
creative and safe. To live in such an ideal house, I feel totally relaxed.

A place where I often go shopping is called the “good neighbour” convenience store, its

The place carries almost all the daily necessities that a person needs, whether its simple
cosmetics , sanitary products, snacks and booze, although the selection cannot compare with
that of a big supermarket , I think its enough to satisfy my needs.

I go there almost everyday, it’s become a part of my daily routine, when I leave my building
in the morning I will stop to pick up a coffee and the morning paper before I head off to work.

I really like shopping there because I think the place lives up to its name, it's really a good

Part 2. 答案

1. Describe a long journey you enjoyed.

You should say
where you went
when and why you went there
what landscapes you saw
and explain why this was such an unforgettable trip.

One journey I went on that was very long indeed was my trip around Europe last summer,
travelling by train.
I went for a whole month, going all around Europe from my home country of England east
until I got to Eastern Europe, and then back in a loop to Italy. I went so I could see the rich
history and culture of the continent, which was practically on my doorstep. I felt it was high
time I embarked on a long trip to experience some more of the world and its people.
Travelling by train I kept myself occupied by looking out of the window at the landscapes as
they flashed by. The countryside was mostly fields, but once I got to the Alps then it became
beautiful. There were towering cliffs of rocks with fast-flowing river scutting between valley
walls. I could even see a castle on one of the hillsides. Each city I visited brought a new style
of architecture and type of person on the street. I saw medieval cottages, baroque cathedrals
and shabby, modern apartment blocks. The landscape varied with each country I came to.
I’ll never forget this trip because it was the first time I was travelling without a home base. I
went with a good friend and we spent a lot of time together. We had memorable conversations
on the long train journeys about live, society, religion... all very deep stuff. I also had the
chance to see some of the world ’s most famous sights like the Eiffel Tower and the Dom
cathedral in Cologne. It was fascinating waking up on a moving train knowing that the next
stop I got off at was going to present me with a whole new country with many surprises. It
was a unique experience.

2. Describe a traditional (happy) event that you attended.

You should say:

The traditional event which impresses me most is the Chinese traditional wedding.
The red letter date will be picked by the groom's parents. Both the bride and the groom's
house will be decorated in red in advance.
The groom's family will send out a precession of servants, entertainers and a carriage which is
carried by four servants to the bride's family to bring the bride back. The bride and the groom
will worship the heaven and the earth, the groom's ancestors and they will also serve tea to all
their superiors in the family. After the meal, the new couple will return to the bridal room and
some naughty friends may tag-along and play tricks on the groom. Then, the couple will
finally be left with themselves and the groom can take off the red cloth that covers the bride's
face. You know in the ancient times, a man may probably marry a woman that he had never
met before, that is to say, the first time to see the wife's face was in their bed, which was
really exciting.
That's why I found the traditional wedding so interesting. Now more and more young people
choose to have a traditional wedding, which means there is a growing trend towards the
traditional culture. That's quite delightful.

Parade down the 6th Avenue. It was quite a spectacle. People got all gussied up for the
spookiest of the holidays. In fact, there were two ways one can enjoy the event, either as a
participant or as an onlooker. If you dressed up in a costume, you can participate in the parade
and march down the route. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any costume, I could only watch. As
an onlooker, I stood among the packed crowd behind the police barricades. Some eager fellow
on-lookers climbed up trees for a better view. A few even jumped over the barricades when
the police turned round. Creepy ghouls and giant puppets were marching down the street and
everyone was cheering. It was so fun and we enjoyed a great deal. Looking back, among all
other public events that I went to, this one left the deepest impression. I think the reasons are
two folds. One, we did not have this kind of festivity here in China. It felt so strange to a
Chinese guy to watch people dressed as corpses and monsters and even toilets and at the same
time enjoy themselves. To the more conservative Chinese minds, the party seemed to be the
greatest "cultural shock". Second, I was amazed by the creative designs of the costume. I also
felt the worry-free fun and happiness from the people all around me. I will never forget the
New Yorkers’ creativity and the “in the moment” attitude. Maybe this is why New York City
is so great.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all
family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. All people living away from
home go back, becoming the busiest time for transportation systems of about half a month
from the Spring Festival. Airports, railway stations and long-distance bus stations are
crowded with home returnees.
The Spring Festival falls on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month, often one month later than the
Gregorian calendar. Strictly speaking, the Spring Festival starts every year in the early days of
the 12th lunar month and will last till the mid 1st lunar month of the next year. Of them, the
most important days are Spring Festival Eve and the first three days. The Chinese government
now stipulates people have seven days off for the Chinese Lunar New Ye

People attach great importance to Spring Festival Eve. At that time, all family members eat
dinner together. The meal is more luxurious than usual. Waking up on New Year, everybody
dresses up. First they extend greetings to their parents. Then each child will get money as a
New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper. Burning fireworks was once the most typical custom
on the Spring Festival. People thought the spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits.
However, such an activity was completely or partially forbidden in big cities once the
government took security, noise and pollution factors into consideration.
Everyone, young and old, rich and poor, looks forward to celebrating the noisiest, most
joyous and longest festival of the year. In China, it’s really a solemn occasion.

and explain the result of your being late.

Well, I recalled the experience of my being late for a flight which is the unique flight during
the whole week. And I promised that I will never do such a stupid thing again. It was last term
that I went home from Beijing to spend my summer holiday.
In order to avoid missing the plane, I arrived at the airport at 2ish pm. When I reached the
airport, firstly I looked up the information of my flight as usual by the electronic notice board.
I checked it many times and finally convinced myself of the departure time, which was 5.30
pm. Then I decided to wait for the time in a cafeteria near the check-in desk. It was about 4.30
that I came back to get my boarding card and security pass. However, to my surprise, the
plane had already gone! What was worse, no one took responsibility to explain it to me of the
wrong time writing on the board.
I was keeping the time to get to the airport, but indeed I still missed the flight. The behavior
that they changed the time without informing the passengers in advance annoyed me so much.
In the end, I had to reissue my ticket to a week later with some extra money. I thought that it
was not my fault but I paid the price for it!

You see, the university is about to change the food service on campus.

And there’re two ways of going at this concerning the cafeteria and the snack bars.

Students are invited to vote their opinions on this. (15 sec)

The man is going to vote on option 2, which is to stop the service at the cafeteria and add
more places to eat.

He has two reasons for this--on the one hand, he doesn’t think the cafeteria is a good place
to eat at because it’s very crowded and it’s hard to find a place to eat and a place to park his
bike.

The second reason is that he thinks smaller places are more convenient since they’re
everywhere and it’s a good ideas to have more food on campus, such as barbecues. (40 sec)

The university is going to change the food service on campus. There’re two options for
students to vote for concerning the cafeteria and the snack bars. (10)

And in the listening passage, the man and the woman seem to be in disagreement.(5)

The woman seems to agree with option 1, which is to expand the cafeteria while getting rid
of the snack bars.

She believes since the cafeteria is in the students center and everybody goes there at noon,
it makes good sense to serve food here.

The problem of being crowded can be solved by providing more tables. (20)

The man is going to vote for option 2. He believes the cafeteria is too crowded and too
much of a headache to eat at because of the waiting.

And he thinks that the snack bars are to the students benefits because they’re everywhere
and provide more food choices on campus.

He thinks it’s a great idea to have barbecue on campus. (25)

2 Para. Q: Explain ways that a gardener can control plant disease caused
by a fungus, and explain why these methods work.

In this listening passage, the lecturer introduces two ways a gardener can use to keep
plant diseases under control. (5 sec)

The first way is to remove the infected plant and destroy it, and you also need to get
rid of the adjacent soil to that plant. Because fungi can spread to the soil and stay
there for a couple of years. So in order to take care of the problem, you’ll also need to
take away the soil. (25 sec)

The second method is called crop rotation----rotating crops. By that, the professor
means that a gardener should not grow the same crop in the same lot for 3 years
continuously. For example, if you grow tomatoes one year, then don’t grow it for the
next two years. This method works because fungus, as a kind of parasite, can’t
produce food and needs to feed on other host plant. Without it, the fungus will die. (30

In this lecture, the professor gives us a study on emotional intelligence. And it shows
that E. I. influences the experiences of young people both positively and negatively.
(10 sec)

In this study, young people were asked questions, such as whether they think about
their own thinking. The researchers found that these young people are really intense
and passionate. They experience greater happiness and enjoy confidence in the things
they do, all because they benefit from higher emotional intelligence. (So this is the
positive influence.)(25 sec)

Yet, as a 16-year-old girl pointed out, that life is not easy for these high E.I. kids.
They’re often made fun of for being different. And they become over-sensitive to other

this is the negative effect Emotional Intelligence imposes on them. (25 sec)

Q: Describe the woman’s problem and the suggestions the man gives him. And
then explain which suggestion you think the woman should take. Why?

In this listening passage, the man and the woman talk about a problem
the woman has with the course cultural history of the United States.
There are two professors teaching this course next quarter. The woman
doesn’t know who to follow and she asks the man to recommend one of
them.
According to the man, the two professors are quite different. Professor A
has entertaining classes, yet the essay questions make the exam
difficult; professor B asks the students to concentrate on details, but the
exam is easier.
If i were the woman, I would probably go with professor A. I mean
examination is just one day, as long as I work hard at it, i think I can
handle it. And if I did that, I will have a great time learning during the
course.
Listen to a conversation between two students
Describe the woman’s problem and the two suggestions the man gives her to
solve the problem. Then decide what you think the woman should do, and why?

From the listening, we find that the woman is facing a predicament caused by a cat she
picked up.

The cat showed up a couple of days ago, feeling hungry and cold. The woman was kind-
hearted enough to have taken him in and fed him. And now the cat is refusing to go
away. The woman wants to keep it but her apartment doesn’t allow pet.

The man thinks the woman can do one of two things. She can find another apartment,
which allows pets; or she can just give the cat to the her mom.

If I were the woman, I would do neither of the two suggestions. I will give the cat to a cats’
home, you know the one that accepts stray cats, keep them and find future owners for the
cats. If she did that, she won’t have to give up my apartment nor give extra burden to her
mom. It’s quite feasible.

came into being.

In this lecture, the professor introduces the Bank HOliday of 1933.

Firstly, she makes it clear even though the name sounds good, Bank
Holiday was rather a disaster. It happened when the Banks were in hot
water in the 1920s to the 1930s. Banks were failing and closing because
of their instability. The crash of the stock market only made the
situation worse.
The dire situation called for a solution. And president Roosevelt provided
the answer. He ordered the banks be closed for a number of days and
government would step in to sort out bank work. A bill was passed to
insure the money saved in a federal bank. The situation improved very
much.
And this was called Bank Holiday of 1933.
