Name : ______________________ Date : ____________

Subject : Power Plant Engineering Section : __________

Midterm exam : ( key to Correction )

Test I : Define and explain the ff:

1. Fuel – is composed of chemical elements which in rapid chemical union of oxygen produce combustion.
2. Combustion – is that the rapid union with oxygen with an elements which in rapid chemical union of oxygen produce
combustion.
3. Gas – a substance or matter in a state in which it will expand freely to fill the whole of a container , having no fixed shape and
no fixed volume.
4. Oil – are nearly always by-product of petroleum and contain mainly carbon and hydrogen.
5. Internal Combustion Engine – an engine that generates motive power by the burning of gasoline , oil or other fuel with air
inside the engine , the hot gasses produces being used to drive a piston or do other work as they expand.
6. Pour point – is the maximum temperature at which the fuel will no longer pour freely. It is more important to the fuel for
mobile engine whose fuel tanks are generally exposed and heated than for stationary units.
7. Flash point – is the temperature in which ignition of fuel vapors rising above the heated oilwill occur when exposed to an
open flame.
8. Sulfur – an excessive amount may produce corrosion and deposits in an engine.
9. Calorimeter – an apparatus for measuring the amount of heat involved in a chemical reaction or other process.
10. Smoke – is a collection of airbourne of solid and liquid particulates and gasses emitted when materials undergoes
combustion. Together with the quatity of air that is entrained or mixed into the mass.
