Q. Use the Internet to find employers who now do preliminary selection interviews via the Web.
Do you think these interviews are useful? Why? How would you improve them?

A. As per internet there are many companies who are doing preliminary selection interviews via
Web, some of them are Porche Consulting, UNICEF, Exicomm etc. Recruitment is an easy
process but selecting right candidates is a very tough job.

Every process is having a pros and cons, but as a HR Personnel the process must be vetted in
order to minimize the risk uncertainty. Now a day’s organizations are conducting online
interview because technology interventions has grown much faster rate and the world is
connected via web. Thus why not to utilize the technology??

In my point of view Online interview is good choice but not the best one because through online
interview say “Skype Interview” is very user friendly and time saving as well. It’s a good option
to screen the candidates through online interview, but ultimate selection process should
comprises of face to face interview.

But now also the question arises that if a candidate has applied from overseas, then how the HR
Manager should be able to deal with??

Well, initially the HR must go through the CV and based upon that he should be taken a
preliminary telephonic interview to judge his confidence level and its communication skills, and
then based on telecon, candidate should be interviewed via Web (Skype Interview) to understand
his/her technical, functional and behavioral skill sets or skill sets required by company.

It must be noted that these online hiring procedures must be the part of preliminary screening of
candidate’s candidature. It’s an obvious to have the face to face interview followed by medical
checkup, because when an HR Manager is recruiting the candidate, it’s the responsibility of HR
to understand whether the candidates is physically fit for the organization or not, whether
candidate can bear the working pressure in the organization or not.

Like there is another organization called CISCO Systems, Inc; who conduct the preliminary
interview firstly via telephonic and then based on telephonic they further call for Online Skype
interview. They clearly mention the specific date and time of the interview and also instruct the
candidates to have their own camera. The strategy of CISCO is that they doesn’t plan to
eliminate any candidates during onsite or face to face interview because that creates an bad
psychological impact on students towards the organization, thus they try to eliminate during the
web based interview.

However web based interview reduces:


 Recruitment cost,
 Travel,
 Time

 Also makes easier for the candidates.


 Add potential for finding candidates willing to relocate.
 Much easier to arrange

Also it is believed that candidates are more honest towards computers rather than human because
computers aren’t judgmental. Several of the interpersonal interview problems like making quick
judgment by looking at the physical appearance are also obviously avoided by using such kind of
recruitment process. These above companies dosent want the vedio conversation should be like
friends they also judge how seriously the candidate has taken the online web based interview.
