Welcome to EVR1001 online! This course is designed to help you learn about environmental science (and
what environmental scientists actually do!) at your own pace and when it is convenient for you. Please pay
careful attention to the course schedule so you don’t fall behind. We have also set it up so that you can have
one low exam score and still get an A, because we’ll drop your lowest exam score.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Week 1: Jan. 7-11, 2019: First Day attendance is not used for online classes. I will not drop anyone
automatically.
• Create your account with Pearson MyLab and Mastering (from the link in Canvas).
• The Registration Guide is posted in the Home/Syllabus tab in Canvas. Follow the steps in the Registration
Guide exactly!! Do this immediately because Exam 1 is in 4 weeks, and there are 3 chapter assignments to
complete before taking Exam 1.
• You will need an access code, but you will not need a Course ID using this process. If you are asked for a
Course ID, you are not registering correctly through Canvas.
• You can purchase the required access code directly from Pearson when you are registering. You can also
purchase the required textbook and access code from the FSU Bookstore. If you purchased a Pearson
access code for EVR1001L, it will also work for EVR1001.
• Please use your full name (the name FSU uses!) and your FSU email address when you register with
Pearson so the grade books will line up properly.
• If you have trouble registering, capture screen shots of the page you were on, what you clicked, and what
error screen you got and contact the Pearson Help team (listed in the Registration Guide).
• Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019: Last day to drop courses. I will not drop anyone automatically. You have to drop
yourself.
Week 2: Jan. 18, 2019 is the deadline to select where you will take your exams (FSU, SDRC, an external site,
or Examity). Every student must select a proctor site, even if you plan to take exams at the FSU Testing
Center.
• Go to this site to choose your Proctor Site: https://distance.fsu.edu/students/distance-learning-exams
• If you choose the FSU Testing Center, you will use Register Blast to sign up for exams.
• Sign up for exams as soon as they are available in Register Blast because the prime time slots late in the
week get taken first.
Week 4: Monday, Jan. 28, 2019: Exam 1 opens, covering Chapters 1-3. Complete those homework
assignments before taking Exam 1. The target assignment due dates are shown in the course schedule (page
4).
Week 7: Monday, Feb. 18, 2019: Exam 2 opens, covering Chapters 4-7. Complete those homework
assignments before taking Exam 2. The target assignment due dates are shown in the course schedule (page
4).
Week 10: Monday, Mar. 11, 2019: Exam 3 opens, covering Chapters 8-11. Complete those homework
assignments before taking Exam 3. The target assignment due dates are shown in the course schedule (page
4).
Week 14: Monday, Apr. 8, 2019: Exam 4 opens, covering Chapters 12-14. Complete those homework
assignments before taking Exam 4. The target assignment due dates are shown in the course schedule (page
4).
Week 17: Saturday, Apr. 27, 2019: Exam 5 opens, covering Chapters 15-18. Complete those homework
assignments before taking Exam 5. The target assignment due dates are shown in the course schedule (page
4).

Introduction to Environmental Science EVR1001 (Online) Spring 2019
This Syllabus is subject to change and you will be notified via Announcements on the Canvas course site and
your FSU email, so check the Canvas site and your FSU email every day. You are responsible for everything
in this Syllabus, and for keeping track of the exam schedule and Assignment target due dates.
First Day Attendance Policy: Because this is an online-only course, we do not use The First Day
Attendance procedure. If you decide you do not want to take the course, you must drop the course
yourself during the Drop/Add period.
Your TAs are your “designated mentors”. They are standing by to help you get the most out of this course. The
TA list will be posted on the Canvas course home site after drop/add ends.
Purpose/Objectives:
At the end of this class students:
• will be able to describe the relationships between components of the natural world and the effect of the
built world upon it.
• will be able to analyze environmental problems and identify the risks caused by them.
• will have a basic knowledge of hazardous materials.
• will investigate basic concepts of air and water pollution, especially nutrient pollution.
• will be able to describe solid and liquid waste disposal and treatment issues.
These competencies will be evaluated using homework assignments (20% of your grade), and five section
exams (20% of your grade each; after we drop your lowest exam score), which will constitute 100% of the final
letter grade.
Course Web Site: We will use the FSU Canvas system at: https://canvas.fsu.edu/ to post course information
and announcements. You should check the course Canvas web site and your FSU email every day for
course announcements. From the Canvas course site, you will access the Pearson MyLab and Mastering
Environmental Science web site, where you will find the homework assignments, practice quizzes,
animations, videos, other learning modules, and access to the e-text.
Required Online Access Code and textbook: You must purchase an access code for the Pearson MyLab
and Mastering Environmental Science assignments. The three options listed below include the necessary
Access Code. You are not required to buy a hard copy of the textbook, but if you do, you must get the 6th
edition of Essential Environment: The Science behind the Stories by Jay H. Withgott, Matthew Laposata.
Earlier editions are not the same! If you have a used textbook, choose Option 1 below to get the required
access code. Beware of other (possibly cheaper) Pearson products that may be available on the internet. They
will contain an invalid Access Code unless the ISBN number matches Option 2 or 3 (below). If you are also
enrolled in EVR1001L (online lab course), any of these purchases will fulfill the textbook and access code
requirements for both courses.

Introduction to Environmental Science EVR1001 (Online) Spring 2019
• Buy direct from Pearson: When you first click on the MyLab and Mastering link from the Canvas course site
you will be asked to establish an account (please use your full name (the name FSU uses) and FSU email
address) and if you want to pay for an access code using a credit card. This will also include access to the
e-text (a hard-copy textbook is not required).
• FSU Bookstore: Standalone Access code- ISBN 9781323911112
• FSU Bookstore: Access code + Loose-leaf textbook – ISBN 9781323907795
Registering With Pearson: All reading materials, homework assignments, and exams will be accessed on the
Pearson MyLab and Mastering Environmental Science web site. The Registration Guide for Pearson MyLab
and Mastering Environmental Science is posted in the Home/Syllabus tab in Canvas. Follow the steps in the
Registration Guide exactly!! Do this immediately because Exam 1 is in 4 weeks, and there are 3 chapter
assignments to complete before taking Exam 1. Please use your full name (the name FSU uses) and FSU
email address when you sign up for Pearson MyLab and Mastering so that the gradebooks will line up
properly. You will need an access code (see above), but you will not need a Course ID using this process. If
you are asked for a Course ID, you are not registering correctly through Canvas. If you have trouble
registering, capture screen shots of the page you were on, what you clicked, and what error screen you got
and contact the Pearson Help team (their email and phone number are in the Registration Guide).
Course Schedule: You must keep up with the chapter readings and all assignments according to the schedule
below, since the exams rely on your knowledge of that material. The homework sets are available for the entire
semester, but the exam dates are set by the FSU Testing Center.
Homework: You should complete the chapter assignments before taking each exam. The homework
assignments are completed inside the Pearson MyLab and Mastering Environmental Science web site. The
Chapter readings and Homework Target Dates are shown in the Course Schedule below. You should plan to
complete one chapter every 5-7 days. If you wish to re-do a homework assignment for a higher score, ask your
TA to re-set it for you. However, you should record your correct answers before asking for a re-set because a
re-set requires that you re-enter every answer. Make a note of which questions you missed, and search the e-
text to find the correct answers. Searching the e-text, using key words from each question, is a good way to
find answers.
Section Exams: Five section exams will be given during the semester, covering 3-4 chapters each. All of the
exam questions will be taken from the Homework Assignments, so studying those questions will prepare you to
do well on the exams. Test Dates are shown below in the Course Schedule. Each exam can only be taken
once.
On-campus students must register for exams with the FSU Testing Center.
(https://distance.fsu.edu/students/distance-learning-exams). You can then use the Register Blast link
(https://www.registerblast.com/fsu/Exam/List) on the Canvas site (see below: ALL STUDENTS). When you
correctly register for an exam, you will receive an email with the date and time. Print this email as proof that
you successfully registered and bring it with you to the FSU testing center. If you do not get an email
confirmation, then you did not register properly.
If you are eligible for support from the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) at FSU, you will choose
SDRC as your designated proctor site. Off-campus students will register a proctor site with the FSU Testing
Center and arrange to take exams at their proctor sites (or using Examity) during the week each exam is
available.
Reporting flawed question or answers: If you think a question is flawed for any reason, or if the answer seems
incorrect, please report this to Prof. Landing. Send an email stating exactly which assignment and which
question number seems flawed, and we’ll check it out and get it corrected if necessary.

Introduction to Environmental Science EVR1001 (Online) Spring 2019
Evaluation/Grading Procedure: Your combined percentage score for the Homework Assignments (total points
earned divided total points possible) is treated like an exam score (100% basis). Your letter grade will be
calculated as the average of the top 5 scores from your homework score and the 5 exam scores (all on 100%
basis). We will drop your lowest score before calculating your letter grades.
Letter Grades will be based on your Overall% Score, and will be rounded off from the 2nd decimal place to the
1st decimal place. For example: 86.95 is rounded up to 87.0 (B+); 86.94 is rounded down to 86.9 (B). 93.95 is
rounded up to 94.0 (A); 93.94 is rounded down to 93.9 (A-);
University Attendance Policy: Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other
documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities.
These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid
excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness.
Make-up exams will not be offered without an “excused absence” and only if you contact us before
missing an exam. If you get sick, get arrested, wreck your car, go out of town, become hospitalized,
etc. contact the Instructor by email or phone before you miss an exam!! Do not tell us AFTER you miss
an exam; tell us BEFORE you think you will miss an exam.
ALL STUDENTS:
• You must complete the Online Proctor Designation Form within the first two weeks of the semester, even if
you intend to take exams at the FSU Testing Center. Do not wait until the last minute! Do it now!
• If you are eligible for support from the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) at FSU, please choose
the SDRC as your designated proctor then contact Testing Center staff (testing@campus.fsu.edu) to
ensure your exam will be available.
• Address disputes with the course instructor, not the testing staff. Testing centers are not responsible for
grades, test questions, answers, scores, or addressing student concerns about being turned away for any
reason.
• You must abide by the FSU Honor Policy and Student Conduct Code.
further information. Sign up early because the prime time slots on Thursdays and Fridays get chosen first.
When you correctly register for an exam, you will receive an email with the date and time. Print this email
as proof that you successfully registered and bring it with you to the FSU testing center. If you do not get
an email confirmation, then you did not register properly.
• When you come to the FSU Testing Center with your proof of exam registration, present a valid FSU ID
card with clear photo and legible name to check in. No other form of ID will be accepted. Additional
identification may be required if the FSU ID photo is outdated or not easily recognizable.
• Arrive within the exam window, check in at the reception desk in UCC1100 and proceed to the testing room
to be seated for testing. Those who are late will not be allowed to test and will be referred to the
instructor. See facility hours of operation.
• Bring your FSU ID and any approved materials for the test. Other personal belongings that will not fit in
pockets, including all wrist watches and all electronic devices and phones, must be put in a bag provided
by the Testing Center and may not be accessed inside the testing room. If a student accesses the contents
of a bag during an exam, the exam is terminated and the student is dismissed from the facility. Bags must
be left at the bag receptacle upon leaving the testing room.
• Turn all cell phones completely OFF. If a student's cell phone is on or makes ANY noise (ring, vibration,
beep, etc.) in the testing room, the exam is terminated and the student is dismissed from the facility.
• Do not bring loose papers into the testing room unless specified by the instructors. If scratch paper is
allowed on the test, it will be provided and must be surrendered before leaving.
• Do not wear any headgear (hats, wraps, sunglasses, etc.) to exams, unless required by religious practice
and included in official ID photo.
• Request for restroom breaks requires showing a proctor content of pockets and documentation of time
elapsed. Time taken for restroom breaks will not extend the time allotted to complete an exam.
• Exhibit proper decorum in the testing facility. Violations of the following may result in expulsion from the
facility for the remainder of the semester:
Talking in the test room (except to proctors)
Leaving the facility with any test content (questions, directions, etc.) or with any student responses
Rude behavior towards testing staff or other students
• Use computers in the testing room for testing purposes only.
RegisterBlast Policy (only for students using the FSU testing center)
• Each exam administered at the Testing Center will have time slots available on our RegisterBlast interface,
containing enough spaces available for students based on the course’s enrollment and the exam window.
• The time slots will be available on Help/RegisterBlast link at least two weeks before the exam’s start date.
• Time slots will remain open throughout the entire exam’s window; until a time slot is full or the time is past.
• All time slots are available on a first-come, first-choice basis. Sign up early because the prime time slots on
Thursdays and Fridays get filled first.
• Students will be able to reschedule future appointments using the self-rescheduling tool in RegisterBlast.
The ability to reschedule an exam will depend on the availability of free time slots. If no other times are
available the student cannot reschedule.
• When you register for an exam, you will receive an email with the date and time. Print this email
confirmation as proof that you successfully registered and bring it with you to the FSU testing center. If you
do not get an email, then you did not register properly.
• Students that do not show for appointments will not be able to reschedule by themselves. They must email
Regblast@campus.fsu.edu to request cancellation of their missed appointment in order to schedule a new
testing time. It is the student’s responsibility to find an available time slot and sign-up the new time after the
original time is canceled by the Testing Center.
• Students cannot walk-in to take the exam without an appointment under any circumstances.

the FSU Testing Center staff to ensure your exam will be available.
Students testing at a remote site (you do not use Register Blast to sign up for exams).
• Review the exam schedule with the prospective proctor site prior to submitting a selection with the Online
Proctor Designation form. Students must make appointments with proctors for testing at external proctoring
sites.
• Distance students are required to verify all information, such as address, email, telephone number, proctor
name, etc. with the proctor site prior to proctor selection.
• Submit the Online Proctor Designation form within the first 2 weeks of the semester; late submissions are
subject to rejection.
• Distance students that do not see an available proctor within their area are required to investigate the
location for a suitable proctor and submit an Alternative Proctor Form at least 2 weeks prior to the exam
window date. An Alternative Proctor Form is also required two weeks prior to the exam window start date
for students needing to add or change their selected proctor.
• Contact the FSU Testing Center staff by phone (850-644-8696) or email (testing@campus.fsu.edu) should
you require a facility that is not listed on the Proctor Designation Form.
• Schedule the exam date and time with the proctor well before the testing window provided by the instructor.
Please be aware that:
Proctors often reserve certain times or days of the week for distance learning exams; e.g., finals week.
Students must familiarize themselves and adhere to the policies of the proctoring location.
Students must arrive with enough time to allow the full time for the exam; for example, do not show up
an hour before closing if your exam is two hours long or you will not be seated.
Students must check with the proctor at least two business days before the testing window begins to
ensure they have the necessary exam information.
On test day, the student must bring one of the following forms of photo ID. Failure to provide proper ID
will result in being turned away. Note: An additional form of photo ID may be required if the photo is
outdated or not easily recognizable.
FSU student ID
State-issued driver's license
Government-issued photo ID (passport, etc.)
• Pay required fees for proctored tests at remote facilities. Students are advised to get fee information in
advance including the amount and when it must be paid. Testing facilities often require prepayment and
receipt for payment may serve as a ticket to the proctored exam session.
• Abide by the FSU Honor Policy as well as any policies and procedures required by the chosen testing site.

Academic Honor Policy: You are bound by the FSU Academic Honor Code in the FSU Student Handbook.
Summarized briefly, you have the responsibility to (1) uphold the highest standards of academic integrity in
your work, (2) refuse to tolerate violations of academic integrity in the University community, and (3) foster a
high sense of integrity and social responsibility on the part of the University community. The Florida State
University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University’s expectations for the integrity of students’ academic
work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities
of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic
Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to “….be honest and truthful and….[to] strive for personal and
institutional integrity at Florida State University.” (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at
http://fda.fsu.edu/academics/academic-honor-policy)
Liberal Studies For The 21st Century: The Liberal Studies for the 21st Century Program at Florida State
University builds an educational foundation that will enable FSU graduates to thrive both intellectually and
materially and to support themselves, their families, and their communities through a broad and critical
engagement with the world in which they live and work. Liberal Studies thus offers a transformative
experience. This course has been approved for the Liberal Studies disciplinary requirement of Scientific
Method and Reasoning and thus is designed to help you become a critical appraiser of theories and the facts
that support them.
