Peer Leader Job Description 2017-2018

Marymount Manhattan College Peer Leaders (PLs) are student leaders who help new students become
acclimated to Marymount Manhattan College and the larger New York City community. Peer Leaders work
with new students to provide them with a clear understanding of academic life and opportunities to become
involved in the College community. The PLs are role models, advisors, friends, but most of all, they are peer
mentors who care about the growth and development of incoming students. Peer Leaders are chosen after an
extensive application and selection process. Selected leaders go through intensive training by College staff to
gain skills necessary to serve as a resource for students. Peer Leaders play a pivotal role in welcoming new
students to the College during Griffin Days Orientation in June and Welcome Week in August. Additionally,
PLs provide assistance to the New York City (NYC) seminars and NYC 100 workshops during the fall
semester. During the spring semester, PLs work one hour per week with their students outside of the
classroom getting involved in opportunities on campus and exploring NYC.

Expectations and Responsibilities


Spring 2017 Semester
 Attend training, Friday, April 28th from 10am-5pm. Peer leaders who are unable to attend must set up a one-
on-one meeting with Student Development and Activities staff.
 Attend a pre-summer meeting with assigned NYC faculty in May 2017. Peer leaders who are unable to attend
must set up a one-on-one meeting with their assigned NYC faculty.
 Complete all necessary hiring forms and submit to the SDA office before the end of the spring semester.
 If able, PLs should sign-up to serve as a Griffin Guide during the June 2017 Griffin Days Orientation sessions.

Summer 2017
 Return to MMC two weeks prior to the start of classes in the fall and attend all training programs.
 Act as a representative of Marymount Manhattan College at all Orientation and Welcome Week sessions and
required functions as determined by staff.
 Work as a member of a large team of students and staff to enhance the experience for new students.
 Fully prepare for the arrival of students by creating orientation packets, setting-up rooms, staffing various
stations, including student check-in.

Fall 2017 Semester


 Lead educational workshops for new students and facilitate small group sessions to process information
received during Orientation and Welcome Week
 Familiarize new students with available student and College services, activities, and resources
 Facilitate trips around New York City during Welcome Week
 Participate in a 3-hour per week NYC seminar for duration of fall semester
 Lead one or more classroom sessions, as part of the NYC seminar program
 Participate in and help to facilitate NYC 100 - College Success Workshop
 Attend and participate in Advisement Days and other activities during the fall and spring semesters
 Participate in and complete the CityEdge CareerLab online workshop
 Actively engage in a variety of community building activities on or off campus
 Attend and participate in additional programming/events/activities as assigned

Winter Break 2017-2018


 Send postcards or emails to students during the January break
 Staff and support the spring New/Transfer Orientation program

Spring 2018 Semester


 Be prepared to participate in Welcome Back activities during the first week of the spring semester
 Attend and participate in the annual Leadership Summit
 Meet with members of your NYC seminar outside of the classroom at least once per month during the spring
 Use emails/social media to engage your students at least once a week throughout the fall and spring semesters
 Work closely with your NYC Seminar instructor to facilitate both in-class and out-of-class curricular activities
 Attend and participate in Advisement Days and other activities during the spring semesters
 Facilitate, in conjunction with Career Services, CityEdge CareerLab Workshop for first-year students
 Attend and participate in additional programming/events/activities as assigned

Conduct & Behavior


 Maintain a positive attitude, spirit of helpfulness, and enthusiasm during Griffin Days Orientation, Welcome
Weeks, during the NYC seminar and in general when representing the College
 Provide mentorship to new students and assist in their transition and sense of belonging within MMC
 Assist students to develop familiarity with the physical surroundings
 Provide insight on personal safety and security on campus and within the city
 Provide opportunities to discuss expectations and perceptions of the College with continuing students and
provide accurate information and referrals
 Abide by the Code of Conduct at all times

Qualifications

 Must be a full-time matriculated student at Marymount Manhattan College for the 2017-18 academic year
 Must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 throughout their term
 Must maintain good academic and disciplinary standing (including in the Residence Halls)
 Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work with groups
 Must not be a Resident Advisor or Alternate for the 2017-2018 academic year
 Must be registered full-time for fall 2017 by end of April 2017
