Reaching beyond the 'sky'

Yogiraj Vethathiri Maharishi's Simplified Kundalini Yoga (SKY) helps people improve their mental power and physical
fitness.

FITNESS CLUBS and gyms have made yoga a part of their regimen but this ancient system is more than just about tying
yourself in knots to stay in shape.

Yoga has been a part of the Indian way of life for centuries and many sadhus have developed their own technique. Yogiraj
Vethathiri Maharishi is one of the enlightened souls, who has developed Simplified Kundalini Yoga or SKY after a great
deal of research and practice. His system not only ensures physical fitness and agility, but is also a path to peace.

He established the World Community Service Centre (WCSC) in 1958, with the aim of promoting world peace through
individual peace. WCSC functions through its 182 affiliated trusts all over the country. Each of these trusts administers
teaching centres and there are about 700 such centres across the world teaching Simplified Kundalini Yoga, says
Arulanandam, secretary of the World Community Service Centre in Thiruvanmiyur.

Yogis have identified seven points in the body where one can feel the life force, like a pulse. This force needs to be raised
from the `mooladhar' to the crown chakra. Kundalini yoga is a system of raising the Kundalini energy or life force to help
an individual reach a higher level of consciousness. SKY is supposed to be less time consuming and anyone above the age
of seven can learn it, claims Arulanandam. The system aims to regulate the flow of vital elements - blood, air and heat. All
the exercises can be done within 30 minutes. "People feel rejuvenated within a day. Yoga is union — the mind merges
with the life force," he says.

SKY aims to provide peace of mind and good health.

With yoga and meditation, the mind can be controlled and this improves memory, concentration, mind power and can
even control ageing he explains

even control ageing, he explains.

The World Community Service Centre teaches integrated yoga consisting of simplified physical exercises for good health
and improving immunity, simplified meditation and introspection methods for mental harmony and simplified kayakalpa
exercises to conserve life energy and maintain youthfulness.

"Our main message is we should learn to streamline and control the mind. Having advanced in terms of science and
technology, man should not misuse it and destroy himself. It is necessary to build the sentiment of peace among the
people so that they can influence their leaders to become lovers of peace," says Arulanandam.

The centre holds daily classes between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and there are 12-day introductory courses every month. For
