FAIL-SAFE FUNCTION QR20DE
Fail-safe Function
I When any of critical sensors or systems is malfunctioning, fail-
safe function estimates operating conditions with other input
signals and selects safer conditions for engine (vehicle)
control, based on the data previously stored in ECM.
I Selects fuel injection pulse width according to engine speed and throttle

SELF-DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION QR20DE
Outline
I In self-diagnosis, when any of critical sensors, actuators, or exhaust systems necessary for engine con-
trols is malfunctioning and self-diagnostic malfunction detection conditions are satisfied, malfunctioning
system is stored in ECM for easier trouble diagnosis. Results of self-diagnosis are either informed of by
malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) in combination meter, or displayed on CONSULT-II. This section
describes indications by MIL.
I There are two diagnostic modes, mode 1 and 2.The system is set to mode 1 in normal condition, while in
mode 2 self-diagnostic mode or function to monitor heated oxygen sensors is available.

THROTTLE VALVE CLOSED POSITION LEARNING QR20DE
AND IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING
Outline
If connector of electric throttle control or ECM is disconnected,
perform throttle valve closed position learning after repair. This is
because closed throttle position (throttle position sensor output
value when throttle is fully-closed) needs to be learned. Also, if
electric throttle control or ECM is replaced, vehicle system must
learn minimum required idle air volume requirement. Thus, after
replacing any of these components, it is necessary to perform
throttle valve closed position learning and idle air volume learning.
Note that idle air volume learning is equivalent to idle-based
speed adjustment by conventional IAS (Idle Adjust Screw).
EC-21
THROTTLE VALVE CLOSED POSITION LEARNING
AND IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING QR20DE
Idle Air Volume Learning (Cont'd)
STARTING IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING
1. Turn ignition switch ON with accelerator pedal released.
2. Immediately after turning ignition switch ON (within 3 seconds), fully depress and release accelerator
pedal repeatedly for 5 times within 5 seconds. (Stop the procedure with accelerator fully closed.)
3. Fully depress accelerator pedal 7 seconds after releasing pedal, and keep it fully depressed for approxi-
mately 20 seconds. After that, release accelerator pedal within 3 seconds, and start engine. , Idle air
volume learning starts.
* After approximately 10 seconds passes, MIL starts blinking, then turns OFF.
4. It takes approximately 20 seconds to complete the learning. Do not turn ignition switch OFF during the
process.
5. Confirm that idle air volume learning is completed by the followings.
I Turn ignition switch OFF, and keep it for approximately 10 seconds or more, then restart.
I Confirm that ignition timing and idle speed are within specifications.
CAUTION:
Measure the time precisely using a watch.
SEC830C
CAUTION:
If accelerator pedal position sensor system has any malfunction, idle air volume learning cannot to
be started.

FUEL PRESSURE INSPECTION QR20DE
Quick Inspection
I Turn ignition switch ON (engine not running).
I Touch ªONº or ªINTERMITTENTº in ªFUEL PUMP RELAYº
of active test mode.
I Pinch fuel hose with fingers and check for pulsation.
I Pinch fuel feed hose with fingers just after ignition
switch is turned ON, and during cranking. Hose shall
feel hard and pulsating.
PBIA2503J
I Disconnect fuel hose, and connect fuel hose for fuel pressure
measurement using hose clamp.
CAUTION:
I Wipe off oil or foreign objects on insertion part of fuel
hose using shop cloth with gasoline.
I Apply gasoline adequately to insertion part of fuel hose.
I Insert fuel hose for fuel pressure measurement to the first
spool on fuel tube.
I Use genuine hose clamp (Part No. 16439 N4710 or 16439
40U00).
PBIA0316J I Install fuel hose clamp at the edge of hose (within 1 to 2
mm). Tighten it to specified torque.
EC-23
FUEL PRESSURE INSPECTION QR20DE
Inspection Using Fuel Pressure Gauge (Cont'd)
I Hose clamp tightening torque: 1 - 1.5 N⋅m (0.1 - 0.15 kg-m)
I After installing fuel hose for fuel pressure measurement, pull it
by the force of approximately 100 N (10 kg). Make sure that
hose does not separated from fuel tube.
I Clear ªFUEL PRESSURE RELEASEº.
I Turn ignition switch ON, and make sure that there is no fuel
leak.
PBIA2505J
FUEL PRESSURE
I Start engine, and check that fuel pressure is as specified.
Fuel pressure: [MPa (kg/cm2)]
At idle: 0.35 (3.6)
I If vehicle shows poor starting, check fuel pressure of fuel
pump for approximately 1 second after ignition switch is
turned ON and at cranking.
Fuel pressure: [MPa (kg/cm2)]
One second after ignition switch is turned ON and at
cranking: 0.35 (3.6)
CAUTION:
I Start engine, and make sure that there is no fuel leak.
I While measuring fuel pressure, make sure that no fuel
leaks from connection of fuel hose every 3 minutes.
When fuel pressure is NG (outside specifications)
Too high: Malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator, clogged fuel
return line, and/or bent hose
Too low: Malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator, poor fuel pump
discharge, clogged fuel supply line, and/or clogged
fuel filter.
CAUTION:
Also check fuel pressure at increased engine speed.
