A Study on Effectiveness of employee counseling in an

organization

INTRODUCTION:-

Employee counseling is a psychological health care intervention which can take many
forms. Its aim is to assist both the employer and employee by intervening with an active
problem-solving approach to tackling the problems at hand.

The costs to industry and commerce each year associated with employees’ poor psychological
health are enormous. A significant proportion of the Gross National Product (GNP) of
industrialized countries is lost each year through ill-health, particularly in respect of stress-
related illness.

These costs increase substantially when lost productivity resulting from stress-related
inefficiency and incompetence is taken into account. Stress-related incompetence is not
inevitable though.

Employee counseling can do much to prevent the negative effects of stress at an individual level
and ultimately at an organizational level.

Few organizations can now afford to ignore the consequences associated with employees’
psychological health.

OBJECTIVES:-

• To understand the employee and employer relationship better


• to find ways to improve employee productive through counseling
SCOPE OF YOUR STUDY:-

Employee counseling programs are beneficial to solving employee problems that affect
job performance. Their service ranges from problem assessment, supportive counseling, and
referrals to higher levels of treatment, wellness education and training, and follow-ups for
both employees and family members.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:-

An attempt is made to study the use of counseling and to show the problems arises if
there isn't a counseling for employees, a manager has to deal with various types of problems in
dealing with his subordinates employees and particularly the problem employees, problems like
Low self-esteem, Ill treatment, grievance, alcoholism, mental conflict, low job satisfaction,
breakdown in relationship etc.

TOOLS:-

The first and primary data collected from Libraries, books, journals and other critical
publications, this information is mostly for theory part of the research but as for the topic
employee counseling not only theory part is sufficient

My secondary data is from questionnaires and Surveys. Surveys and questionnaires


provide social researchers with quantifiable information from internet and other sources,
statistics and data analysis as on statistical data.

FINDINGS:-

Today of course it is a very specialized service and a profession in itself. Pressure at work
place and at home, lack of support system such as elders and the mismatch of expectations are
the reasons for disharmony between couples & there is alienation.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has set up a network “Maitree” in 2005 to counsel its 30,000
employees. Under the initiative, 90% of TCS offices organize family get-togethers and activities
such as ball dancing and yoga classes and theatre workshop, helping employees working long
hours keep healthy.
“At Wipro, to reduce employee stress after long working hours, HR initiated “Mitr”, an in house
counseling service, in 2003, the set up trains employees in counseling to help out colleagues in
distress,” said a senior HR manager with Wipro Technologies”

SUMMARY:-

The following are the short view of the detail explained in the study:-

• Showing brief idea about employee counseling in the organization


• Need of counseling for employees under difficult conductions
• Link between counseling and productive of employee

CONCLUSION:-

If employees are to function at an optimum level of well-being and competence, it is vital


that they feel supported and valued. Organizational systems are sometimes quick to make
demands and ‘hinder’ but occasionally slow to ‘help.’

Employee counseling can be a vehicle to provide help in an effective, practical way. It is


through such help that individuals are motivated to understand and realize their own career
potential, thus maximizing the chances of functioning in the best interests of the organization.
