The origins of citrus

The citron (Citrus medica) is a large fragrant citrus fruit with a thick rind. hough citron cultivars
take on a wide variety of physical forms, they are all closely related genetically. It is used widely
in Asian cuisine, and also in traditional medicines, perfume, and for religious rituals and offerings.
Hybrids of citrons with other citrus are commercially prominent, notably lemons and many limes.

The pomelo, Citrus maxima or Citrus grandis, is the largest citrus fruit from the Rutaceae
family. It is a natural (non-hybrid) citrus fruit, similar in appearance to a large grapefruit, native
to South and Southeast Asia. The pomelo is one of the original citrus species from which the rest
of cultivated citrus have been hybridized. The popular fruit is used in many festive celebrations
throughout Southeast Asia.

The orange is the fruit of the citrus species Citrus × sinensis in the family Rutaceae.[1] It is also
called sweet orange, to distinguish it from the related Citrus × aurantium, referred to as bitter
orange. The sweet orange reproduces asexually (apomixis through nucellar embryony); varieties
of sweet orange arise through mutations.[2][3][4][5]
The orange is a hybrid between pomelo (Citrus maxima) and mandarin (Citrus reticulata).[2][6] The
chloroplast genome, and therefore the maternal line, is that of pomelo.[7] The sweet orange has
had its full genome sequenced.[2]
