Attempt Five Questions Only

Question 1)
a) A step-up chopper used to deliver 3A into the10Ω load. The battery voltage is 12V,
L=20µH, C = 100µF and the chopper frequency is 50kHz. Determine the on-time of the
chopper, the battery current variation and the average battery current.

b) Answer the following:

i. What does the energy output of a solar (PV) cell depend upon?
ii. Why is it important to find out the highest power output for a PV cell?
iii. What are some of the limits of using PV panels to make electricity?

Question 2) An AC/AC voltage converter made of two thyristors in anti-parallel connection

and driven by a 220 V, 50 Hz voltage is loaded by a resistor RL = 2.2 Ω. The forward
voltage of the thyristors is 1V and the resistance while conducting ron = 5 mΩ. If the
required power of the load (heater) is PL = 11 kW, determine:
(a) Angle of conduction of the thyristors,
(b) Load power factor,
(c) Power of dissipation in one of the thyristors, and
(d) Form factor of the thyristor current.

Question 3) A figure below shows a power electronics converter system that are used to obtain
a DC 600V at the load terminal from an AC utility,

100Ω

a) Named the required converters I and II

b) Draw the circuit diagram of each converter
c) Compute the input voltage of converter II
d) Design the required duty cycle of converter II to obtain 600VDC at the output.
e) Determine the DC output current of converter I.

Question 4)

A 220V, 1500rpm, 10A separately-excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 1Ω. It is fed
from a single-phase fully-controlled bridge rectifier with an AC source voltage of 230 V, 50 Hz.
Assuming continuous load current, compute: (a) Motor speed at the firing angle of 30° and
torque of 5Nm (b) Developed torque at the firing angle of 45° and speed of 1000 rpm.

Question 5)
a) Consider a PV module with the following characteristics: VOC = 48V, Isc = 5.5A,
Pmax=150W when V=30V. What is the “maximum power resistance?” If your actual load
resistance varies between 12 and 24 ohms which one of the two dc-dc converters
discussed in class (buck and boost) will you choose to operate the PV panel at its
maximum power point? What will be the operating range of the converter duty cycle?
What will be the operating range of the converter output voltage?

b) The thick trace in the figure below represents the output of a diode bridge rectifier (DBR)
with a 5 kW load. The DBR is connected a regular wall outlet in Iraq with a 220Vrms
voltage and a 50Hz frequency. What capacitance is needed on the DBR output in order
to have a peak-to peak voltage ripple of 5% of the peak voltage? Suppose that you travel
to the US where the line frequency is 60Hz and the voltage is 120Vrms. Does the voltage
ripple change? If so, what’s its new value?

Question 6)
Six-pulses SCR rectifier supplying R-L load with a ripple free DC current. Draw the converter
circuit diagram. For the same scale, sketch the waveforms of the three-phase input voltage,
output voltage, output current, input current for each phase, and the current through the switches
for one limb. Assume the firing angle = 600.
