De Soto Home Show
on April 28

The 22nd annual De Soto Home
Show is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday,
April 28, at De Soto High School, 815
Amvets Drive, in De Soto. The event is
sponsored by the De Soto Chamber of
Commerce and Leader Publications.
Representatives from businesses of-
fering a wide variety of home products
and services will be on hand to display
and demonstrate their wares. There will
be more than 80 vendors set up inside
the school’s gymnasium and in outdoor
spaces.
Many vendors will offer giveaways,
discounts, drawings or demonstrations
during the show, and some also will have
cash-and-carry items for sale. The public
is invited and admission and parking are
free. All ages are welcome.
More than 1,000 people attended
last year’s event, which raised more than
$5,000 for the chamber. The money is
used, in part, to keep the chamber office
staffed and to fund activities in the com-
munity such as Christmas events and
several scholarships.
“This is one of three major funding
sources, along with our golf tournament
and the De Soto Fall Festival,” said
chamber member Eric Leonard, event
chair. “Because we did so well last year,
we were able to do more at the Christmas
events, and we hope to do even better
this year. It makes it enjoyable for the
community.”
Leonard said the chamber’s Christ-
mas activities have become a tradition
for locals.
“It’s growing to where people are start-
ing to plan their holiday around it – the tree
lighting, the parade, the free movie at the
Melba, the animals at Mahn’s. People are
coming from out of state to these things.”

“We had to send people away half-
way through because we had so many
signed up,” he said. “We’re looking to ex-
pand that so we can include more people,
maybe even do some other kind of ride.”
Leonard said anyone considering
a home repair or remodel project will
find great help and advice at the De Soto
Home Show.
“Even if they don’t have a project
planned right away, it’s great to get to
talk to vendors, put a face to the names
in the ads,” he said. “When it’s time to
do a project, you don’t want to just pick
somebody off the internet and hope
for the best – you want to spend your
hard-earned money on somebody local,
somebody with ties to the community,
who you’ve seen and talked to.”
At last count, he said, there are 83
vendors signed up for the home show.
“We are completely full; every

space has been sold,” he said. “That’s
the first time ever, as far as I know.”
He said those still interested in renting
booth space should not give up hope,
though.
“We may decide, if we get enough
interest, to make some space available in
other, less traditional booth space areas,
like the hallways,” he said.
Attendees are encouraged to stop
by the chamber’s booth for a courtesy
bag. Smart visitors will also bring along
pre-printed address labels, which make it
quick and easy to enter giveaways, sign
up for information, etc.
Some of the other activities through-
out the day:

up on the upper level of the gym and
staffed by the De Soto High School
Gridiron Gang Booster Club. All pro-
ceeds from the sale of sandwiches,
snacks and beverages will go to support

Piece of my heart
Son surprises mom with memento
of childhood home

Debbie (Werner) Crady of De Soto

grew up in a small house on Vine Street
in Festus. With five siblings going in and
out all the time, the front door was always
in motion.
“I can hear Uncle Leo right now,
saying ‘Shut the damn door!’” said
her cousin and frequent visitor, Dustin
Hardin.
Crady’s parents, Augusta Werner of
De Soto and the late Leo Werner, had
the house built in 1947 and lived there
until the widowed Augusta moved to the
home of Crady and her husband, Bryan,
in 2010.
Crady’s daughter, Theresa, lived
there by herself for a while, then with her
husband, Chris Brischle, after their 2011
wedding. When they moved into their
own home in 2013, Crady’s son, Kevin,
bought the house.
When Crady found her son planned
to remodel the doors in the home, she told
Kevin she wanted part of the front door
as a keepsake. Instead, he gifted her with
the entire thing.
“I originally told him I just wanted
the lock part,” she said. “It took an old-
fashioned skeleton key. I have that on my
key chain, and it still works, although we
don’t use it any more because the door
has a deadbolt.”
While Crady was away from home
on a trip, Kevin installed it in the back
door of her current home, first cutting it
down to fit the new space.
Walking in and seeing that piece of
her childhood home was an emotional
experience, she said.
“Just looking at it brings back a lot
of memories,” Crady said. “I haven’t
refinished it or anything; I decided just
to leave it the way it is. It even has the
original old-time blinds, with cloth tapes
holding the slats together. Every so often,

Herbs, essential oils valuable summertime first-aid tools

Ah, summer! The warm sun is beat-
ing down, the flowers and trees and vines
are all in full bloom … and you’ve got
poison ivy, a sunburn and muscle aches
from digging in the garden.
Increasingly, people are turning to
natural remedies for their warm-weather
ailments.
Nan Backes of Natural Health and
Home in Crystal City offers several sug-
gestions for ways to stay comfortable
without reaching for a pill bottle.
Herbs and their derivatives, essential
oils, the juice from plants – all can be
used for first aid and to increase comfort,
she said.
“Natural essential oils like penny-
royal, lavender, cedar, lemongrass, pep-
permint and thyme can be used as insect
repellent,” Backes said. “You mix the oil
in with a carrier oil, or mix it with purified
water, and spray it onto your skin.
“I have some guys from Ameren who
have to go tromping through the woods
for their job. They come in and get Dr.
Bronner’s lavender bar soap because
they say it really helps keep chiggers and
ticks away.”
For sunburn, people have long used
the soothing gel that is found inside the
leaves of the aloe vera plant. But Backes
said the juice from the plant is just as
valuable.
“What people like to do is put aloe
juice with a little lavender and peppermint
in a spray,” she said. “Apple cider vinegar
also relieves pain.”
For skin rashes like poison ivy or
poison sumac, she recommends an herb
called jewelweed, available in a spray
or a soap.
Backes cautions that, although natu-
ral remedies can be effective, the amount
and strength of the ingredients may vary,
as opposed to the rigidly-controlled
amounts of ingredients in FDA-approved
manufactured pharmaceuticals.
“We have to make sure we don’t Lavender Jewelweed

The National Center for Biotechnolo-
gy Information (a division of the National
Institutes of Health) makes the point that
plants contain many compounds, some
very complex, that cannot always be ac-
curately replicated in a laboratory.
“The sciences believe that the whole
plant is greater than the sum of the parts,”
says one article on the NCBI website.
“It has been shown that the effects of
whole-plant extracts cannot be mimicked
by administering purified and isolated
constituents of the herbs.”
The article goes on to say that natural
remedies don’t just target the specific
problem, but affect all the different, inter-
related systems of the body.
“Herbal medicines usually tend to
have several broad complementary or
synergistic actions on physiological sys-
tems at the same time,” it says. “Herbal
medicine usually directs towards aiding
the body’s own healing process, support-
ing the systems and processes that have
become deficient.”
The NCBI echoed Backes’ warning
about using only high-quality herbs and
essential oils.
“Make sure you get therapeutic-grade
oil,” she said. “It’ll say that on the label.
And make sure they are natural, not syn-
thetic, oils.”

I love plants and flowers, and as a
foodie, I like to grow fresh herbs, espe-
cially the basil I use to make Caprese
salads, one of my favorites.
Until recently, though, I didn’t have
a good place by a window in my house
to keep my plants alive, so I was always
buying new ones.
Fortunately, my husband, Steve, is
a bit of a handyman, something my late
grandma and great-aunt were always
happy to tell me after he’d help them out
with some chore at the condo they shared.
Eventually, after I complained long
enough, Steve decided to build me a shelf
under the big window in my breakfast
nook.
He drew up a little plan, went to
a couple of hardware stores to get the
lumber and other supplies he needed, and
had it built and primed on a Saturday and
painted that Sunday.
In the meantime, I went out and
bought several new pots and plants. I was

CAPRESE SALAD
If you’ve never had a Cap-
rese salad, I highly recommend
trying one. The salad is both
delicious and easy to make. It’s
best, of course, when tomatoes
are in season, and I love to use
heirloom tomatoes, but any big
tomato will work.
To make one, take two or
three thick slices of tomato
(about 1/2-inch thick) and lightly
salt them. Put a large piece of
mozzarella cheese (I use the big
pre-sliced roll of mozzarella you
can find at most grocery stores)
on top of each slice of tomato
and then top that with a large
leaf or a couple of small leaves
of basil. Drizzle a little olive oil
(I never use more than 1 table-
spoon) on top and then even less
(about 1 teaspoon) of balsamic
vinegar over that. Lastly, sprinkle
on some pepper and enjoy.

Building a home? Get ready to make some

You heard it first here. Forget 50; there actually

are 100 shades of gray. At least.
I speak from experience.
My husband and I are coming up on our two-
year anniversary of living in our new home, com-
pleted in the spring of 2016.
In March of that year, we talked about the color
gray a lot. I guess I should be truthful – I did most
of the talking.
It was our second time to build a home, but it
was the first time we really embraced the experience.
We first built 25 years ago, when we sold our Festus
home in a blink and had to unexpectedly relocate.
It came about after a real estate agent, aware
that we had been unsuccessful in selling our house,
contacted us through a friend. After two years of
trying, first by ourselves and then with the help of
real estate professionals, we had given up, taken
our home off the market and started remodeling to
meet our needs.
As the work made the interior more appealing,
we lost our wanderlust.
Then came the call from the agent. She had a
potential buyer who liked the location, exterior and
potential low price. Could she see the inside? The
house was listed for one weekend only, the buyer
came and was charmed. Sold!
How wonderful and how terrible. We had three
small children to consider and had made no plans for
a next step. We quickly decided to move from Festus
to Fenton and to build a home on the other end.
Working with our builder friends, we lickety-
split chose a home design we liked, bought a lot and
parked our family in a one-bedroom apartment for
the five months it took for a hole in the ground to
become a three-bedroom ranch suitable for a busy

see if any insects or animals have taken
up residence. Rodents, birds and bugs

the portable gas tank or the natural gas
line to the house to see if it’s intact and
hose lighting on fire. If wear and tear is
significant, replace the hose for safety.
■ Take out all of the grates and wash-
able components and scrub them down.
Some leftover drippings or food particles
may remain from last year. Check the
grease trap and be sure to clean that out
as well.
■ Next, season the grill. When every-
thing is dry and the grill is off, coat all
of the grates and gas emitters with high-
heat cooking oil like canola, suggests
grill manufacturer Char-Broil. Make sure
the oil coats the grates and gas emitters
evenly and wipe up any excess. Then
light the grill and let it heat up for around
15 minutes, or until the oil burns off or
starts to smoke. Lightly coat grates with
oil after each use to inhibit rust as well.

It’s all about confidence when using
DIY skills to cope with disasters

In the 35 years we’ve lived in our
house, there have been plenty of disas-
ters, large and small, to befall us there.
I like to think we have acquitted
ourselves pretty well in most of those
situations, relying largely on our do-it-
yourself skills and our can-do attitudes.
There were the minor crises, like the
grape popsicle melted onto the cream-
colored Berber carpet just a few months
after it was installed. A few years later,
an angry teenager slammed the hollow-
core bathroom door back against a towel
hook, resulting in a big hole in the door.
The back window of my SUV mysteri-
ously shattered in a million pieces on the
same day my son used the weed-whacker
along the driveway.
Then there were some more serious
problems:
■ The abovementioned angry teen-
ager, in a separate but similar fit of pique,
chucked a filled water bottle across the
room, smashing the inside pane of a
double-paned window.
■ During a remodeling project, my
husband stepped on a nail and ended up
in the hospital for two days with a blood
infection.
■ Tree roots clogged the sewer line,
necessitating the services of a backhoe
and a large, smelly tank truck with a
pumping device on the back.
■ A roller hockey puck went through
BOTH layers of a double-pane window.
(“You just can’t hold back on a slap
shot, Mom,” my 8-year-old son patiently
explained.)
■ Just a few months later, that same
son was winding up to chuck a big rock
out into the yard when it slipped from
his grasp on his backswing and went
through the last unbroken window on

has begun

After living at the same ad-
dress for the past two decades,
my husband, Rob, and I decided
it’s time to sell our great fam-
ily home and move on to a new
adventure – a home we inherited
only a few blocks away.
The anticipated move
prompted a massive de-clut-
tering and revealed something
unexpected. We have a lot of
chairs. I mean A LOT. I’m not
talking about the recliner, the
rocking chair, the sectional sofa
or the club chairs. I’m talking about
straight-backed chairs, designed for
kitchen tables and such.
We are the proud parents of four
children – all out on their own now.
But there was a time when dinner
routinely included the six of us and
at least two or three friends. We
bought a kitchen set with eight chairs.
It replaced a set with only four. That
set was moved to the rec room in the
basement for games of Monopoly or
Catch Phrase.
We inherited a beautiful hard-
wood table handcrafted by my
grandfather. It came with no chairs.
The table fit perfectly in our great
room. So we bought another six chairs
to go with that.
These new seats joined an already
impressive chair collection.
Early in our marriage, we rescued
a drop-leaf table with five chairs. We
have a card table with four metal folding
chairs, left over from my first college
apartment. At an estate auction, my
husband purchased a chair for a whiney
toddler. One of the boys was tired of
standing around, so Rob bid $2 and
bought the kid a seat.
