A. Introduction
1
Islamic teaching requires its adherents to be able to become educated
people, where the number of educated people must increase, while the number of
uneducated people will continue to decrease and eventually disappear. (Ghazali,
1995: 407). Education as told by Ali (2008: 13), is a process of preparing the
future of students in achieving life goals effectively and efficiently. Education is
a term that is easy to say but difficult to define. This difficulty, according to
Tafsir (1992: 26) is due to the many types of activities that can be referred to as
educational activities and the extent of the aspects fostered by education. The
essence of education is inseparable from human nature, because ontologically the
existence of education is due to human existence (Hidayat, 2016).
2
Likewise with the curriculum, it is more directed at how materialistic
things can be achieved. In this case learning is more focused on aspects of
knowledge (cognitive) than how a student has an attitude that is in accordance
with Islamic values.
Millennials is the name for a period that occurs after the global era, or the
modern era. Therefore, the millennial era can also be called the post-modern era
(Nata, 2017). Such life is based on assumptions, that with reason, the five senses,
and material supported by advanced science and technology all problems can be
solved.
Want to travel far just order a plane ticket; want to sleep well and eat
deliciously just go to hotels and restaurants, want to have fun, just go to
entertainment venues; want to be healthy, just call the doctor, and want to be
smart, just call the teacher; want to get high information, see Google. And so on.
All that will feel light, if the problems and challenges contained in the
modern post and globalization as mentioned above can be overcome, so it is not
too heavy. Human readiness in facing this situation is different. That is, there are
those whose conditions are still severe, that is, when they have not been able to
solve the problem of postmodernism and globalization, new problems have
arrived; there are those who are already mild, that is, they have been able to solve
the problems of the post modern and the era of globalization, and live facing the
problem of the millennial era. In addition there are also human conditions that
3
are still rather heavy, which is only able to resolve some of the challenges in all
those eras.
The sophistication of the final technology has almost changed the mindset
of the community, from early childhood, adolescents, parents, teachers /
lecturers, also from the middle to the upper class. The rise of global culture and
lifestyle has become the impact of globalization that cannot be stopped anymore.
High-technology sophistication has become an inseparable part of people's lives,
as if various high-technology tools are an important part of their lives.
The concept of character education has actually been around since the
time of the Prophet Muhammad. This is evident from the command of Allah that
the first and foremost task of the Prophet is as a perfection of morals for his
people. Character in Islam is the main target in Islamic education. The concept of
education in Islam views that human beings are born by carrying out external
potential, namely: 1) the potential to do good to nature, 2) the potential to do
damage to nature, 3) the potential of divinity which has non-physical functions.
These three potentials are then handed back to human development. This then led
to the concept of a holistic approach in Islamic education, which included
elements of knowledge, morals and creeds.
4
prioritizes the educational process as an agent of moral formation (Anwar &
Salim, 2018).
Basically the nature and character of Islamic education are the same
as the nature and characteristics of Islamic teachings, namely teachings that
are based on theology. With this theology, then the teachings of Islam in
addition to basing its teachings on the teachings of God contained in the
Qur'an, and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad contained in the hadith
(sayings, deeds and provisions), also based on the opinion of a healthy mind
that is not contrary to the teachings of the Qur'an and al-Hadith.

characteristics, education must develop its integralistic character with a new
perspective.
G. Conclusion
Meillennial era with its rapid development of technology has made some
people become lazy caused by the easiness in doing something. This is the
challenge for Islamic education how to make the challenge turn to be an
opportunity for the creation of superior humans, both in their knowledge and
morals.

Tantangan Pendidikan Islam di Era Milenial
A. Pendahuluan
14
berubah-ubah. Yaitu akhlak yang berkaitan dengan kehidupan sosial,
ekonomi, politik, budaya, pendidikan, dan lain sebagainya.

Discussion
Question 1
Are the causes of the increasing occurrence of deviant behavior, such as crime,
corruption etc. which are used as indicators of the failure of character education?
Answer
Increased deviant behavior, crime, corruption, drugs, free sex, etc. are often used as
indicators of character education failure. The cause of this condition which is
generally used by some experts is because character education stops at teaching that
is insightful, knowledgeable, cognitive memorization and indoctrination, absence of
examples and role models, practice and habituation, and quantitative in nature.
Question 2
Answer
Religious education should be more oriented to foster religious insight and exemplary
in relation to religious intellectual building. Because in this millennial era, Islamic
education was demanded besides printing Islamic generations, also able to survive in
the development of an increasingly advanced era.
Question 3
How about the success of the Prophet Muhammad in educating the early generations
in particular, and overcoming the problems of the people in general?
Answer
According to Abudin Nata, the success of Rasulullah SAW in educating the early
generation in particular, and overcoming the problems of the people in general was
due to his accuracy in photographing the problems of the people and offering a
strategic way of solving, as well as a strong will, which was supported by noble
character.
18

Pertanyaan 3
Jawaban
