(a) Prepare the frequency distribution for the above raw data considering a class
interval of width 8 and the lower class limit of the first interval as 4.5 US$.
(b) Draw the histogram, frequency polygon and the less than cumulative frequency
ogive for this distribution. Briefly explain conclusions you make using these three
diagrammatic presentations.
(c) Determine the mean, median and mode for the above frequency distribution.
(d)
i) Briefly explain why standard deviation is widely used in statistics to derive
conclusions.
ii) Determine the standard deviation, variance and the coefficient of variation for
the above frequency distribution.

Task 4 (M1)

Whenever two variables x and y are so related that an increase in the one is
accompanied by an increase or decrease in the other, then the two variables are said to be
correlated. The correlation coefficient determines the relationship between the two
variables.

When there is a linear relationship exists between two variables, the line of regression
can be used for estimating unknown values of one variable corresponding to the known
value of another variable.

The following table shows the final examination marks for computer science (X) and the
marks for the final project (Y) for 10 students.

(a) Determine the coefficient of correlation. Comment on your answer.
(b) Determine the lines of regression for the above data.
Task 5 (P3)

(a) The probability that machine A will be performing an usual function in 5 years
time is 1/4, while the probability that machine B will still be operating usefully at
the end of the same period is 1/3. Find the probability in the following cases that
in 5 years time.

i) Both machines will be performing an useful function.


ii) Neither will be operating.
iii) Only machine B will be operating.
iv) At least one of the machines will be operating.

(b) An underground mine has 5 pumps installed for pumping out storm water, the
probability of any one of the pumps failing during the storm is 1/8. What is the
probability that,
i) At least 2 pumps will be operating.
ii) All the pumps will be working during a particular storm.

(c) A skilled typist, on routine work, kept a record of mistakes made per day during
300 working days (table 2).
