Research Design

Explain why your research is quantitative in nature. You can also give the meaning of the
quantitative. (at least 10 sentences)

Example:

Quantitative is the systematic empirical investigations of observable phenomena via statistical

mathematical, or computational techniques. Quantitative is explaining phenomena by collecting
numerical data that are analyzed using mathematical based methods. It also measures the values
or counts and is expressed as numbers. This type of research measures also the types and may be
represented by a name, symbol, or a number code.

The researchers’ study is a quantitative type of research. For the first question, it asks the
question about the demographic profile of the respondents such as age, gender, educational
attainment and civil status.

The researcher’s survey questionnaire indicates the possible reasons of the employee’s job
satisfaction and the factors that affect the employee’s job satisfaction. it quantified the degree of
agreeability of the respondents to possible reasons in job satisfaction of the employees in
commercial jobs.

Description of the Respondents

(It looks like you are just going to give general information about your respondents. And
provide the number of respondents that you have computed through slovin formula, so it’s
a must you already knew the population of your target respondents)
The respondents were 348 out of 787 freshmen college students of Polytechnic

University of the Philippines, Taguig Branch. They were selected through the use of stratified

sampling technique.

The courses involved are as follows:

 Bachelor of Science in Accountancy

 Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics Major in Actuarial Mathematics

 Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering

 Bachelor in Secondary Education Major in English

 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology

 Diploma in Office Management Technology

 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Human Resource and

Development Management

 Diploma in Information and Communications Technology

 Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

 Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering

 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Marketing Management

 Bachelor of Science in Office Administration

Sample and Sampling Technique

(You will provide info about your sampling technique. Take note! Not all the time, stratified

sampling technique is applicable to your research, so please know to yourselves what is the

appropriate probability sampling should be used on your research. This part also includes the

computation of sample from a population. ) This part should have at least 10 sentences
The research uses Stratified Sampling. Stratified sampling is a probability sampling

technique wherein the researcher divides the entire population into different subgroups or strata,

then randomly selects the final subjects proportionally from the different strata.

The most common strata used in stratified sampling are age, gender, socioeconomic

status, religion, nationality and educational attainment.

Stratified random sampling is used when the researcher wants to highlight a specific

subgroup within the population. This technique is useful in such research because it ensures the

presence of the key subgroup within the sample.

The researchers also employ stratified random sampling when they want to observe

existing relationships between two or more subgroups. With a simple random sampling

technique, the researcher is not sure whether the subgroups that they want to observe are

represented equally or proportionately within the sample.

With stratified sampling, the researchers have a higher statistical precision compare to

simple random sampling. This is because the variability within the subgroups is lower compared

to the variations when dealing with the entire population.

Because this technique has high statistical precision, it also means that it requires a small

sample size which can save a lot of time, money and effort of the researchers.
To determine the sample size, from a given population size, the Slovin’s formula was

used. Below is the Slovin’s Formula:

Solution:

n = N / 1 + N e^2 n = N / 1 + N e^2

where: n = 787 / 1 + (787) (0.04)2

n = 787 / (1 + (787) (0.0016)

n = number of samples n = 787 / (1 + 1.2592)

N = total population n = 787 / 2.2592

e = margin of error (4%) n = 348.35

n = 348

Instrumentation

(It’s okay to put the first questionnaire you have submitted to me, just change this part

once we’re completely done for your final questionnaire. This part just part only includes

where did you get the questionnaire. is it validated or adapted only? The parts of the

questionnaire and the things to do by the respondents on your questionnaire) Remember

this part is only about the questionnaire.

The researchers uses constructed questionnaire validated by the English Professors of the

PUP-Taguig Branch. The questionnaire contained an assessment divided into three Language

competencies namely, a) Grammar, b) Vocabulary, and c) Reading Comprehension..The

respondents are requested to encircle the letter that corresponds to the correct answer in each

item.

Data Gathering Procedure

(This is a detailed part on how you are going to conduct the study. Starting from the
specific or detailed parts of your questionnaire. It also includes the number of
questionnaires to be answered, who will answer the questionnaires (school, grade level and
school year if applicable.)

To determine the problems in learning English language, the researchers used the data

gathered from answers of the students to our given questionnaire. The questionnaire is divided

into four parts : the first part collects information on the students’ demographic profile ( age,

gender, type of secondary school graduated ; the second part consists of 10 items of questions

about Grammar; the third part consists of 10 items of questions about Vocabulary; and the fourth

part consists of 10 items about Reading Comprehension.

The data set used in this study consists of 348 questionnaires regarding all sections of

First year college students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines Taguig Branch covering

the Academic year 2015-2016.

Research Locale

(You will provide information about the chosen research locale; 10 sentences at least)
The respondents of this study were students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines

Taguig Branch. This state university is located at General Santos Avenue, Lower Bicutan,

Taguig. It is one of the branches of Polytechnic University of the Philippines. This 10-hectare

campus was reserved in 1967 through Presidential Declaration and it was established on 1992.

Among the building and structures inside the campus are: the Marichu Rodriguez Tinga

Building, otherwise known as Building A ; the Cayetano Building which houses the library and

the school’s auditorium; the students center also known as Building B is where the offices of

accredited organizations are located. Other structures can be found in the campus are Zonta Park

and Kiosks.

Statistical Treatment

(At this part, you should be aware on what statistical treatment you are going to have, your
stat depends on the questionnaire and you questionnaire relies on your sop. Remember,
you can only choose from descriptive stat since our research is descriptive in nature. Most
probably, we’re going to have frequency, percentage, mean or standard deviation since it’s
only survey type. ) Just put the formula here.

To analyze and interpret the data, the researchers used frequency distribution,

percentage, and mean.

Rating Score Range Verbal Interpretation

5 9.0-10.0 Excellent

4 7.0-8.0 Very Good

3 5.0-6.0 Good

2 3.0-4.0 Fair
1 1.0-2.0 Poor

Formula for calculating percentage is as follows.

Percentage = (f/n) x 100%

Where:

f = frequency

n= sample size where sample size = 348

Formula for calculating weighted mean is as follows.

X = ∑x/N
Where:

X = weighted mean

∑ = sum

x = variables

N= number of variables
