Learning a second language is a process that has many physical,

psychological and social characteristics that can allow the appropriate


development of learning an L2. However, for many students this process
is linked to other characteristics such as emotional, sentimental and
cultural. As a result, their learning can have a different development and
at the same time problematic compared to others. In the present work, I
will take as object of study my own experience as a bachelor student in
modern languages because this process has been problematic for me.
On the other hand, it is very important to analyze another aspects like
social environment or personal situations that difficult my development
as a professional.

My name is Brayan Alexander Ramirez Muñoz. I’m 20 years old. I’m


from Usme, more exactly of Lorenzo Alcantuz; this is a neighborhood in
the south of Bogota city. This is my seventh semester at the University,
my learning process has been somewhat difficult considering that the
social condition of where I come from has served as an excuse in many
ways at the time of undertaking my university path. It has been difficult
from my first semester because I don’t have good English bases from
my secondary because in that school we don’t have English teachers. It
could be the start of my problems with my L2. Nevertheless, the biggest
problem at the moment of learn a second language starts with my self-
confidence and some problems with my pronunciation. In the same way,
there is another problem for learning my L2 and that problem is related
with the desire and relevance of the study in my life, since it is not very
pleasant to come to language classes in the university; in fact, a stimulus
is needed in the English courses for me.

Analyzing my problems with the acquisition of an L2, I answered some


questions that can clarify my problems with the learning of a new
language.

 Do you think English is necessary for you?


I think that English is necessay for my development as a teacher.
However, I think that the University makes the mistake of trying to
create a misconception about the relevance of this subject
because it is seen like an obligation, nor a enjoyable knowledge.
 Did you want to study English?
Yes, all my life I feel a connection with English;in fact, I used to
see and watch musical videos and listening music in that
language. English have always been interesting for me.
Additionally, I like it because It is an essential part of my
professional progress.
 What motivates you to continue studying?
I found motivation in my family and near friends because they use
to say me that I’m a good guy and I took the correct way with this
subject and I can contribute to the development of my
neighborhood and town.
 What does not motivate you to study?
This is the most difficult question for me because I don’t have clear
what allows that I don’t feel comfortable in English classes. I’m the
other hand, I have many theories about it; for example, my English
bases are not good and it could create insecurity in my mind.
Moreover, I feel that in the University there are a lot of people that
can be better in this subject and this feeling allows that my self
confidence disappears.
 What experience makes you feel repellent to English?
English was important for my, but worksheets made for me
hasn’tbeen a good experience because I forget everything in my
mind when I speak English. Indeed, itbis very common for me, and
I don’t know how to solve this problem.
 Have you tried to use English as an instrument of daily life outside
of academics?
I have tried to use it I my daily life, but it is very difficult because I
like things related with the movement of the body; for example
soorts. For that reason, it was difficult for me to use English in other
contexts.
 What makes you not confident when it comes to expressing
yourself in a second language?
I feel uncomfortable because I have always had a problem with my
self confidence as in my mother language I feel confusion when I
try to say something. If I feel uncomfortable In my mother
language, the L2 could be influenced by this feelings.

Studying my owns process I decide to create an stratégie based on the


social cognitive model, because I have to increase my self confidence
and social skills
