ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine association of the Weekly Allowance the Academic
Performances in E-tech of the students. Specifically it pursued to answer the following
questions: (1) What is the students’ demographic profile in terms of: gender and Weekly
Allowance(2) What is thespending habit of the students? (3) What is the student’s
academic performance in E-tech? (4) Is there a significant relationship between the
students’ weekly allowance and their academic performance in E-tech? It utilized
slovin’s formula to identify the number of samples needed at 10% margin of error
stratified. The stratified random sampling technique was utilized to ensure the
respondents certainly the Muntinlupa National High-School (MNHS-TA) Senior High-
School (SHS-MARITIME STUDENTS) students. There are 4 sections in TVL-Maritime
enrolled in subject of E-tech. The respondents of this research were composed of 20
students coming from the 4 sections in TVL-Maritime during the school year 2018-2019,
one section was excluded since the researchers came from this group. The self-made
survey questionnaire was used to gather needed data in answering the stated problems.
Descriptive statistics such as percentage, pie graph and bar graph were utilized to present
the result of this study. While, Chi-Square was computed to identify the relationship of
the weekly allowances and the academic performances of the student. The results show
that food are the number one priority of the students in school, followed by the
transportation, then the photocopies or handouts in different subject and next was the
projects related in school then lastly the Leisure. Maritime students have an average of
below Php 250 weekly allowance. Most of the Maritime students got 80-84 grades in the
E-tech findings indicate computed p-value was 0.16 at 5% level of significant level.
Since the p-value (0.1616) was greater than the significant level (0.05) it presents that
there is no significant relationship between the students’ weekly allowance and
theiracademic performance in E-tech. This study recommend the school may conducts
seminars about the proper spending habit, this may help students to think more critically,
teach them how to save up money in better ways, and help them to decide how to use
their allowance properly.

INTRODUCTION

This chapter of the paper presents the problem and its setting. It includes the background

of the study, the statement of the problem, significance of the study and scope and

delimitation of the study.

Background of the study

Nowadays there are many students facing many payments every day in school and

financial problem that’s why there were students budgeting their allowance for the food

they will consume, their expenses in commuting, the photocopies in school from various

subjects and sometimes to their leisure that’s why the researcher came up with this

problem. The researchers want to make some awareness in students about their allowance

that’s why the researchers came up to the significant relationship of the weekly allowance

to the academic performance of the students. This study emphasized the allowance of a

student and the effects in academic performances of the students but the researchers make

it specifically and focus to the allocation of the allowance and the relationship of it in the

midterm grade of a student in E-Tech.

Diola(2015) from Philippines star said“only 18 percent of Filipinos saw themselves as

thriving financially” while the rest of the represented population said they are struggling

6
or suffering in terms of economic security. Nowadays The k-12 curriculum facing a lot of

problems and one of it is having a lack of learning materials such as a module that affect

students, classroom that make the room in public schools overpopulated and also the

teachers here in the Philippines.

This study focused on students allowance and what can be the possible effect of it to the

school academic performance of the student and how they are going to spend their

allowance. The allowances of the students play a big role in their everyday life because

students’ always using money to buy photocopies, food, projects, transportation and

sometimes leisure. This study aimed to identify if there is any possible relationships

between the allowance of the students and their academic performance in Research in

Daily life. The E-tech was the subject that chosen by the researchers because there are too

many paper works needs to be print, too many survey questionnaire need to be

photocopy, and the researchers also need to use computer to collect information in the

net, sometimes the researchers visiting library to find information needed to their study,

the researchers also spending up some money to food when they feel hungriness while

they are brainstorming about their study.

The researchers conducted this study to show how the students spending their

allowances allotted in their school and personal expenses for photocopy-hand-

outs, because of lack of modulesin various subjects. This reason may have a possibleeffect

in their academic performance. Nowadays, some students are experiencea shortage in

their allowance and were experiencing financial problem allotted for fare, food, and

school-related payment especially photocopies.

7
This study gave awareness to the students, parents, government, and teachers about

the possible effect of a weekly allowance in the student’s academic performance in E-

tech. The researchersaimed to help the government by giving information that can be

used to create a possible solution in the given problem especially the problem regarding

the modules that should be provided by the Department of Education.

Statement of the Problem

This studyconducted to determine the possible effect of Senior High School (SHS-

MARITIME) Students weekly allowance in their academic performances in E-Tech in

the school year 2018-2019.

Specifically, this study focused to answer the following questions:

1) What is the student’s demographic profile in terms of:

a. Gender

b. Weekly allowance

2) What is the spending habit of the student?

3) What is the student’s academic performance in E-tech?

4) Is there a significant relationship between thestudents’ weekly allowance and

their academic performance in E-tech ?

8
Significance of the Study

The researchers aimed to help different groups of people to give information needed to

formulate the possible solutions to the existing problems. This study made in order to

know how students spending their weekly allowance.

To the student. This study can help students not only in senior high school but also other

grade level and college. Using the results of this study, it may an idea on how to spend

their allowance properly.

may affect their academic performance. It shows some of, the students’ facing financial

problem that resulting to their difficulties in spending their allowance properly. The

finding in this study gives them an idea how to help students to gain knowledge about the

wise and proper spending habit.

To the school administration. The findings of the study serve as valuable inputs in the

formulation of the policies of school regarding lessening the needs for the students to

spend high \on projects, photocopies and etc. That encourage the students and teachers to

lessen the needs to spend high on projects, photocopies and etc..

To the other researchers. This study mayuse as reference material for other researcher

regarding to the variables focused on this study. The results of this research may use as

reference or guide for the future researcher in finding an answer to the same problem or

interest of the study.

9
Scope and Delimitation

This correlational research study aimed to show the possible relationship between

theweekly allowanceand the academic performance in Research in Daily Life. This

studyused the stratified random sampling technique and the researchers also used the

slovin’s formula with a 10% margin of error. According to the slovin’s formula with 10%

margin of error, 100 students were divided using the stratified random sampling

technique. This study was conducted in MuntinlupaNational High School (MNHS-TA)

during school year 2018-2019. This study utilized the researcher survey questionnaire to

gather necessary information to selected students in MARTIME in Grade 12, the survey

questionnaire was composed of questions regarding the student’s academic performance

weekly allowance and spending habit.

Definition of Terms

The following are conceptual and operational terms, used in this study.

ALLOWANCE-An allowance is an amount of moneygiven or allotted usually at regular

intervals for a specific purpose. In the context of children, parents may provide an

allowance (British English: pocket money) to their child for their miscellaneous personal

spending.

SPENDING HABITS- It refers of how a person spends their money, it also refers to how

the students spending their money for their everyday needs like for food, transportation,

leisure, and etc.

10
ACADEMIC-PERFORMANCE- the academic achievement or academic performance is

the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their short or long term

educational goals..

RESEARCHERS MADE SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE- This instrument used in this study

to gather necessary information. It composed of 14 questions with choices that measure

the students’ academic performance, weekly allowance and spending habit.

11
Chapter 2

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The chapter of the paper presents the review of related literature, the conceptual

framework, the research hypotheses and the definition of terms.

Related Literature

The students need to know how to spend their allowance properly. This make their life

easier because they spend most of their time on school related activities and their

allowance was used to spend for fare, food, materials, project, photocopy and etc.The

students mostly used their allowance in fare due to the distant of school to their home.

The next one was the hand-outs, photocopies and some school supply students need to

their various subjects (Pondang, 2015). There are students having a lack of experience

and proper knowledge about managing their pocket money. That’s why the parents of

every student must teach their children on how to manage money in the best way. And

having some pack lunch everyday can avoid too much spending of pocket money because

when a person having a pack lunch they don’t need any more to buy more luxurious food

in some fast food chain.

ALLOWANCE

According to Linwood (2000), An allowance is money earned or given to child at regular

intervals to teach the child how to manage money. An allowance is an amount of money

given or allotted usually at regular intervals for a specific purpose. In the context of

children, parents may provide an allowance to their child for their miscellaneous personal

spending. In the construction industry it may be an amount allocated to a specific item of

12
work as part of overall contract. The person providing the allowance is usually trying to

control how or when money is spent by the recipient so that it meets the aim of the person

providing the money. For example, an allowance by a parent might be motivated to teach

the child money management and may be unconditional or be tied to completion of

chores or achievement of specific grades.Financial aid is a help that can be from private

or government who offering a help for the students’ to meet his/her expenses in school

like the Muntinlupa Scholarship program. The MSP was made to help the citizen of

Muntinlupa for their expenses maybe in school, food, fare and many more. There are four

main sources of financial aid. The Federal Aid this is the financial aid there the federal

government offering that can be loans, grant, and work-study funds. The State Aid this

financial aid was offering by state governments and it was offering grants, scholarship,

work-study funds, state loans and tuition assistance then the Institutional Aid consists of

aid that individual colleges and universities provide to their students, they typically offer

scholarships, grant and work-study programs and the Private Aid this financial aid was

typically in the form of loans, scholarships, private financial aids comes from

corporations, religious organization and many moreFarlex(2012).

SPENDING HABIT

The act or practice of handling one’s person finances. According to Harvey (2012),

money management involves paying the bills, making investments, and paying taxes. The

management of money is a strategic technique to make the money more useful and to

stop spending some money to the things that not really needed in your daily life. The idea

13
of money management has been developed to reduce the amount of the expenses of the

people. This involves making every financial transaction worth the expense:Avoid any

expenses of the things you really do not need, always buy items, foods or drink that was

having cheaper price but having a good quality andalways think what the benefits of that

thing to you are. By that you can decide what are the things may have the essential in

your life

Financial aid is a help that can be from private or government who offering a help for

the students’ to meet his/her expenses in school like the Muntinlupa Scholarship

program. The MSP was made to help the citizen of Muntinlupa for their expenses maybe

in school, food, fare and many more. There are four main sources of financial aid. The

Federal Aid this is the financial aid there the federal government offering that can be

loans, grant, and work-study funds. The State Aid this financial aid was offering by state

governments and it was offering grants, scholarship, work-study funds, state loans and

tuition assistance then the Institutional Aid consists of aid that individual colleges and

universities provide to their students, they typically offer scholarships, grant and work-

study programs and the Private Aid this financial aid was typically in the form of loans,

scholarships, private financial aids comes from corporations, religious organization and

many moreFarlex(2012).

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Scottk (2017) stated that academic performance usually discusses to how well a student is

achieving his or her responsibilities and schoolwork. The academic performances are also

known as academic achievement it is the accomplishment of a student, teacher or

institution has achieved in their education. Academic performance usually measured

14
through examinations, projects and the performance of the student but there are no

general agreement of how it will evaluated. Good academic background can give credit

for the future of every people who attained a passing grade in their schools even in their

previous work. Academic performance was a tool to give a student a grades if the student

did not meet the teachers expectation about their academic performance there are a

possibility the student’s may not passed the subject, because the student did not meet the

requirements of the teacher about the academic performance. According to Dervin

Kowalczyk(2018),research is a careful and detailed study into a specific problem,

concern or issue using the scientific method. It’s the adult form of the science fair

projects back in elementary school, where you try and learn something by performing an

experiment. This is best accomplished by turning the issue into a question, with the intent

of the research to answer the question. In K to 12 curriculum the students taking the

subject of Research of Daily Life, that’s why there were to many problems the K to 12

curriculum facing like the lack of modules of the students need to enhance their

knowledge and to teach them easily, the shortage of classrooms and buildings by this

problem too many students fitting themselves inside the classrooms, and the shortage of

the teacher that make students to be a better person for the future.

Related Study

Foreign

The study made by Dang &Bulus (2015) who aim to know the impact of finance to

the academic performance of a student. The researchers used a correlational design and

the study indicated there is no significant difference in the academic achievement of

15
students from low socio-economic background to the high economic background

students. But this study also revealed that there is a difference performance of students in

school by their different socio-economic status and the financial status also affecting the

learning environment of a student. The study recommends that make provision for

adequate infrastructure and facilities needed for smooth operations of the school system,

be it boarding house, public and or private so as to create balance among the students,

there is need for the provision of scholarship especially for student from low

socioeconomic background, learners are also encouraged to engage in collaborative

studies among their peer so as to enable them tap from the experience of each other not

minding their background.

Another study by Opoku (2015), this research aims to know the financial literacy among

senior high student. The findings of the study shows that there are some doubts about the

k-12 curriculum because it made students to use more personal money than the old

curriculum and in addition the parent must discuss the right management of the money at

home because” charity begins at home”. The study mentions that personal finance

literacy course is well elaborated in the academic curriculum of senior high schools.

Also, the national financial literacy week should be extended to school as workshops to

encourage student’s participation in financial literacy.

The study of Heckman, Lim and Montalno (2014) about the factors related to financial

stress among college students in Ohio State University in America. This study used

descriptive design and the result of the study said financial stress, and its associated

negative health and academic outcomes having a serious concern to the college students

16
in this day. The study said that financial stress, and its associated negative health and

academic outcomes, is a serious concern for college students today. While the effects of

stress have been well documented by prior research, factors associated with financial

stress among college students have not been adequately explored.

Local

The study of Pondang (2015) was to identify the effect of daily allowance to the

students of BS Statistics-1. This study used a descriptive design. The result of this study

said there are too many problems that are students facing every day like fare, foods,

photocopies and many more. Having an exact allowance can make students make better

decisions of what they need to buy and what they don’t. The study recommend to student

to bring exact money to lessen the expenses of the student inside the school.

Another quantitative study ofLaderas etal. (2010) aimed to enumerate the effects of

the fare to the allowance of the students’. The researcher used interview method to gather

data about their study. The researcher said the commuters must manage their allowance

wisely. As they commute every day, they became more aware how to properly manage

their allowance properly. Hence the students need to know how to budget their money for

fare and this study proclaimed that those who are not using a public utility vehicle, they

also need to know how to budget the money in their everyday life.

Synthesis

Based on the review of related literature and study was presented were used by the

researchers as a foundation of information on this research, there are 3 foreign studies

17
and 2 local studies stated in this study. Four of the studies arehaving some similarities

about theeffect of weekly allowance to the academic performance of a student in

Research in Daily Life. These are the study of Dang and Bulus (2015),Opoku (2015),

Pondang (2015), and Laderaset, al.(2010).

The respondent of the study of Dang &Bulus (2015), Opoku (2015), Pondang (2015),

Landeras, et al. (2010) are the college students while the present study are the sample

from Senior High Students. The Opoku (2015), Pondang (2015), Laderas, et al. (2010)

used a descriptive design in their research. While the present study utilized correlational

design same as the design by Dang &Bulus (2015).

The main variables of the research of all related study were themoney (Allowance,

financial aid, and finance) similar to the present research. These are the research of Dang

&Bulus (2015), Opoku (2015), Pondang (2015). While the study of Heckman, Lim

&Montalno, (2014)focused about the financial stress which is similar to the possible

effect of the money to the student’s academic performance and the present study

alsofocused on the possible effect of the students' weekly allowance and spending habit

in their academic performance in Research in Daily Life.
