1.1Introduction

Online shopping opens a new world of opportunities and experiences for customers.
The array of products and services that online shopping offers at different price range
makes it an unbelievable market place. Consumers have also heartly open their mind
for online shopping. Large percent of population use internet for shopping things like
clothes, shoes,medicines,etc... Now-a-days perishable goods are also available
through internet. Very few percent of population don't use internet for shopping
purpose due to risk and fear. It includes internet and its users, growth of online
shopping, its pros and cons, current trends in online shopping, challenges of online
shopping, and terminology used.

1.2 Internet
Internet is a big network which is formed by connecting many small networks. It
works as a platform for all the users which are connected to it. Internet has became an
basic need for people. Internet has change the way of living the world. Internet had
made easier all the work which where difficult. It has provided every thing in hand.
Internet has not only made work easier but also increase the GDP of many country.
It has also increase the revenue of both business and country.

According to Camp L. J. (2000),

“Internet is a set of networks connected using protocols that are open and portable,
and that enable the entire research community to share information”.

1.3 Internet usage in India

With over 460 million internet users, India is the second largest online market,
ranked only behind China. By 2021, there will be about 635.8 million internet users
in India. Despite the large base of internet users in India, only 26 percent of
the Indian population accessed the internet in 2015. This is a significant increase in
comparison to the previous years, considering the internet penetration rate in India
stood at about 10 percent in 2011. Furthermore, men dominated internet usage in
India with 71 percent to women’s 29 percent.

8
Indians often turn to mobile internet, as the large majority of the digital population in
India were mobile internet users in 2016. About 323 million people in India accessed
the internet through their mobile phones in 2016, which corresponds to about 24.3
percent of the country’s population. Both figures are forecast to increase in the
coming years, with projections to amount to 524.5 million and around 37.4 percent
respectively in 2021. Mobile internet usage in India varies according to people's
living areas. As of 2016, India had an estimate of 262 million mobile internet users
living in urban communities, and 109 million living in rural areas.

With an estimate of 43.8 percent digital buyer penetration in 2016, online shopping is
also a popular online activity of Indian internet users. Retail e-commerce sales in
India amounted to about 16 billion U.S. dollars that year and are projected to surpass
45 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. Mobile shopping has gained space in the country as
well. About 49 percent of Indian consumers stated using their mobiles for purchasing
goods or services. This share is above global average – which stood at 38 percent as
of 2016 – and the second highest figure in the world, only behind China.

13
1.5 Growth of E-Commerce in India
E-commerce was first introduced in India by Government of India in 2002, when
they introduced IRCTC online passenger reservation system. It allowed booking of
ticket online from anywhere and at any time.

In the year 2014, the number

of internet users in India
stood at around 280 million
and it was speculated that
the number would rise to
almost around 640 million by
t h e y e a r 2 0 1 9 .

1. An increase of almost 70 million Internet users in a year is a big thing. The rise of
mobile internet users is also expected to touch some astonishing numbers at 457
million by the year 2019.

2. Compare this with the projected growth of e-commerce in India by the year 2020,
it is expected to touch USD 70 billion.

3.The analogy seems pretty clear. We are turning into an internet loving nation!

Online shopping is proved to one of the popular online activity among Indian
internet users. It is estimated that 43.8% of internet users had shop online in 2016
and online shopping sales amounted to about 16 billion U.S. dollars (statista.com).
Following chart shows the online shoppers penetration in India:

14
India is a country of billion people, had finished 2015 by exceeding the USA with 239
million smart phone users. In recent years, smart phones become the first or in
many case the only way to access internet. Around 49% of the Indian internet users
are using their mobiles for purchasing goods and services (statista.com). E-
commerce industry of India also has evolving themselves. In a recent study
published by DezInfo, reveals that Indian online shoppers show a major shift in
preference to the mobile app.

The following chart shows the statistics for internet retail sale in India:

16
1.6 Advantages of online shopping
There are many advantages of online shopping and this is the cause why online
shops are a flourishing business today. Yang, Zhao and Wan (2010) have discussed
various advantages and disadvantages of online shopping. Listed below are several
online shopping advantages:

Save Time –

Online shopping is considered as most convenient and time saving mode of

shopping. If you have a specific list of what you want to purchase, just by clicking
mouse, a purchase can be made. This time saved by the consumers can be utilized
for other vital tasks and hobbies.

Save Fuel –

The fuel cost is fluctuating every day, but no matter how much the cost of fuel are it
does not influence your shopping motives. One of the advantages of shopping
online is that a purchase can be made from your house or office so there is no need
for vehicles and fuel cost doesn’t bother consumers.

Save Energy –

shopping from a local market or from physical stores are a tiresome job. It requires
movement from one location to another location. In online shopping, consumers
need not to waste their precious energy when buying.

Comparison of Prices –

Another important advantage of online shopping is consumer can compare prices of

various brands. The advanced innovation of search engine allows consumers to
check prices and compare with just a few clicks. The comparison of prices is very
straightforward from one online shopping website to another. This gives consumers
the freedom to decide which online offers are the most affordable and relevant.

24/7 Availability –

17
Internet is a platform available round the clock of 24/7, 7 days a week and 365 days.
It is very rare to find any traditional retail stores that are open 24/7. The 24/7
availability of online stores give consumers the freedom to shop at their pace and
convenience.

Hate Waiting in Lines –

When buying online; there are no long waiting lines consumers have to tolerate, just
to buy any product. Every online store is designed with unique individual ordering
features to purchase the product.

Too Ashamed to Buy – There are situations when consumer feels embarrassing
while purchase some specific products in front of others. Consumer doesn’t want to
be seen by other people. In online shopping, consumers need not to be ashamed;
online transactions are basically done privately.

Easy to Search Merchandise–

consumers are able to search for specific product that includes model number, style,
size, and color that consumers want to purchase. In online shopping, consumer can
also determine whether the products are available or out of stock.

18
1.7 Disadvantages of online shopping
If there are advantages associated with online shopping, most likely there will be
disadvantages. Despite the success of purchasing through online shopping stores,
there are still some disadvantages that most people complain about. These are:

Personally Check the Item –

Online shopping is not for those consumers who want to touch, see, and test the
product personally, at online shopping, you are not able to do so. Online stores only
show product description and photos, which can be a disadvantage for many online
shoppers.

Diminished Instant Satisfaction –

Online shopping requires patience to wait for the product to arrive at your door step
about 2 to 3 days or even longer depending on the location you've ordered it. But
from traditional retail stores, consumers are able to use the product instantly after
buy, which can be satisfying.

19
1.8 Popular Shopping Websites in India:

Online shopping websites completely change the way of shopping. Open the
shopping websites locate the great deals and place the order. If product is not as per
requirement then return it. The process makes shopping simple and also time saving.
Here is the illustrative list of shopping websites available in India:

Flipkart:

This leading Indian company was founded in 2004. Flipkart sells everything from gift
vouchers to electronics to home appliances.

Amazon:

Amazon is a world’s leading company. It provides wide range of products includes

fashion, electronics, mobile gadgets, home appliances along with the grocery items.
In India, Flipkart gives tough competition to Amazon. Wide variety of products, best
customer service, standard product return period of 30 days and free shipping on an
order above Rs 499 are the key features of Amazon.

Paytm:

This website started just as mobile recharge app, now Paytm become the Indian
Alibaba. Paytm provides a number of services like mobile recharges, bill payments,
ticket and hotel booking along with wide range of generic products. Paytm offers
cash back along with the discounts, which make it different from the shopping site.
Sometime such cash back make a big difference and save your extra money.

Snapdeal:

Another Indian website, Snapdeal is at the fourth position. Consumers can find great
deals on the Snapdeal that make it popular. But if you ask about its customer service
then the answer is it gives one of the worst customer services.

Shopclues:

20
Shopclues is like a roadside shopping website that offer inferior products at cheap
rates. It is popular due to its discounted and cheap price. The quality of products is
good as per its price. If you are looking for extreme quality product then Shopclues
will not meet your requirements.

Infibeam:

Another India originated company Infibeam is at the 6th position. An online

marketplace where you can buy mobile gadgets, electronics and fashion products.
Company sells more than 15 million products across 40 product categories. In April
2016, company issued its first IPO and it was successful.

Homeshop18:

Homeshop18 is one of the oldest Indian online shopping website. It is a venture of

network18 group managed by reliance. Homeshop18 launched India’s first 24 hour
shopping TV channel. It became popular from there. It offers a wide range of
products includes home appliances, electronics, mobiles and apparel.

Myntra:

Myntra is at the first position in the list of fashion online sites. It offers a wide range
of clothes along with the accessories. Consumer can find clothes of every brand on
the Myntra. Although Flipkart acquires Myntra, yet it is a separate online site.
Jabong: Jabong is an Indian fashion and lifestyle ecommerce company. it’s product
range is wider than the Myntra. It includes apparel, footwear, handbags and other
accessories. The other important websites available in India are Voonik, Yepme,
Yebhi, Peperfry, Bigbasket, Urbanclap, Firstcry and many mores.

21
22
1.9 Payment Options in Online Shopping

Majority of online shoppers use a credit card to make payments, on the

other hand there are some systems allow users to create accounts and
pay by alternative means, such as:

 Cash on delivery (C.O.D., offered by almost all online stores)

 Online Cheques (e-cheques)

 Debit card

 E-wallet

 Electronic money

 Gift cards

 Net banking

Some web sites does not accept international credit cards, some require
both the shopper's billing address and shipping address to be in the
same country in which web site does its business, and still other
websites allow customers to send gifts from anywhere to anywhere.
The financial part of a transaction might be processed in real time or
might be done later as part of the fulfillment process.

23
1.10 Challenges in Online Shopping

In-spite of the opportunities of online shopping, it also has poses certain challenges
which are sometimes too much to handle for online consumers:Indian online
shoppers are still not become comfortable with debit or credit card payments for
their online purchase. Consumers are still lacking in trust.

According to KPMG, an audit firm and Internet and Mobile Association of India
(IMAI), cash on delivery (COD) is the most opted payment option by Indian online
consumers with 60% of the transactions. Cash on delivery (COD) has a drawback
that it leads additional transactional cost of 3%.

Another major issue is security with online transactions. A lot of customers are still
not feeling very comfortable while sharing their personal and account details with e-
marketers.

Intangibility is also one of the challenges for e-marketers. As one cannot see, touch
or feel the product, it become difficult for online shoppers to determine the quality
of product before placing an order. So lots of people still avoid shopping online.

Logistic failure in online shopping can deteriorate the image of e-stores and damage
its Future.

2.4 Introduction to SMEs
Small medium Enterprises (SMEs) are said to be the backbone of India’s economy
and I cannot imagine a more interesting time for these enterprises. SMEs are the
engine of the economic development that creates jobs and reduce poverty by
empowering the bottom of the pyramid. Sustained and healthy growth of this sector
is essential, since it is difficult to imagine rising overall living standards and social
peace without such development. The future is full of possibilities for SMEs and it is
up for grabs by the virtue of opportunities afforded by the e-commerce boom in
India. The growing internet base, with more than 343million internet users has a
direct correlation to the growth of commerce in India country.

2.5 The Nature of Small Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs)

30
2.6 Benefits of E-Commerce to Small and Medium Size Enterprises

(SMEs)

We are living in a time where the internet is an integral part of our lives. Either it’s
about choosing the right route for your destination, or, researching before
purchasing something, the internet has covered it all. There is no denying the fact
that we are moving towards a world which would be internet dependent. TAs an
owner of a small offline business, it’s the right time for you to understand the
effects and benefits of e-commerce to take your retail store online.

Though, for someone who is not a regular internet savvy guy, migrating from offline
to online can be a bit challenging. They usually face challenges related to
technological development, making online business strategies, and building a team
of professionals to handle the business successfully

However, with proper guidance and help from professional e-commerce consultants,
it becomes a smooth migration process for them. It’s essential for you as an internet
entrepreneur to choose consultant services based on your ecommerce business
model. This will ease the overall process, at the same time will help you better
strategize things for your company.

Here are some of the benefits of e-commerce for small businesses to be considered
by entrepreneurs:

1. Increased Business Reach

One of the most significant advantages of e-commerce is that it takes your business
to the people where it’s not possible for you to be present physically. By having an
online store, you can sell your products/services from a single location.

2. Increased Business Revenue

As your business reach widens, your customer base would grow, which will directly
impact your number of sales and boost your revenue.

3. Search Engine Traffic

Reaching out to an audience by sending emails, contacting via phone or pushing

marketing messages can be a tiresome task. But, thanks to the search engine traffic,
attracting people to the store has become much more comfortable. Through the
means of an e-commerce business, you can land well in the search engines and start
receiving recurring traffic to your store. Slowly, with the best e-commerce practices,
you can convert these to a steady flow of customers for your business.

31
4. Low Operational Cost

One of the benefits of having an online store is that you don’t have to build physical
stores at all the locations where you want to sell your products/services, a single
eStore would do that for you. This will keep your business operational cost on the
lower side.

5. Online Reputation Building

As a small offline business, when your customers appreciate your products/services,

it’s tough for you to take advantage of those appreciations to influence new
customers. But, with having an online presence of your business, your customers
can share their appreciation over social media profiles of your business. These
reviews are publically available for everyone to see and this helps you to influence
your new users to get converted to customers.

6. Timing Flexibility

As you would be running your business online, you can remain open for new orders
and your customers 24×7, which is not feasible in case of an offline motor and brick
store.

7. Reviews

Word of mouth is still one of the most popular marketing methods that can help any
brand go viral overnight. While in a retail environment it is difficult to get customer
reviews, it is much comfortable and hassle-free online. You can ask customers for
reviews online and build credibility by publishing these on social media platform and
other channels.

32
8. Ease of Product tracking

Tracking a product online can be one of the most significant advantages of an e-

commerce business. You can quickly know the status of your inventory especially
when you hand it over to the fulfillment company. This way you can see where the
product is and when will it reach your customer.

Alternatively, you can also track products that will soon run out of stock in your
inventory.

9. Automated Product Delivery Solutions Available

One of the concerns of an online business could be about managing and handling
the delivery of the products to their customers who are living in different parts of
the world. For them, the good news is that there are various e-commerce logistics
and shipping platforms available today that can deliver any product in any part of
the world from anywhere as per the requirement.

10.Better Experience for the Customers

In today’s competitive business world, the principle ” the customer is the king”,
holds the center stage. E-commerce helps the SMEs to provide a better experience
to the customers. Optimized after-sale services, quick responses to the inquiries of
the consumer, and an interactive and informative process of transactions creates a
strong and loyal customer base which help the SMEs in the long run as these loyal
customers themselves act as strong brand advocates.

11.Better Accessibility and Geographical Reach

The internet is not restricted by any geographical limitations. The seller can connect
to several buyers across different geographical areas. In the virtual marketplace,
geographical boundaries disappear and business can go on 24×7 without any time
zone restrictions.

33
2.7 E-Commerce Acceptance in Small and Medium Size Enterprises

34
2.8 How SMEs can enter to On-line business
SMEs can register their business in any sites either on government site or private. There are
varieties of option are available to them, their are various advantages to by paying and few
amount the business get stated online. This is advantage is not only for business but also for
customer they get the option to buy at sitting at home. These will change the business and
will increase the revenue. By coming on e-commerce the business will reach to the people
who are far way. They can also create their own website

So here are some of information of sites where business can register and instruction and
how to create their own website

Sites to register business

35
2.9 How to create personal website for business
The first thing that arguably every potential
customer does to verify your business's
authenticity or to get a generally idea is to
check your website. You need a website
more so, if yours is a small business with
limited resources. This makes it imperative
that you create a website that contains
information about your business and allows
stakeholders and everyone else to get to
know your business a little better. To create a
website, here is how you can go about it.
First, find where you will host your website.

The host will you not just register your domain and store it for people to see, but
will also get you more visitors. In India, some of the popular hosts for websites
include WordPress, GoDaddy, Bluehost, Namecheap, etc.

Different hosts offer different prices and offers, so you will have to check them
thoroughly to decide who you want to associate with. It is advisable to pick a host

36
that gives you lucrative offers such as money-back guarantee or an email address to
check your online traffic, for example.

SMEs generally look for content management systems that make digitising their
content hassle free and very compact. So, look for hosts that make your website
search engine friendly, use plugins (plugins are software components that add new
features) such as virus scanners, option for customers to contact you, backups, and
many more.

For example, WordPress offers SMEs a comprehensive range of services such as

empowering the site with unlimited premium and business themed templates. They
also offer Google Analytics support, search engine optimisation tools, email and live
chat option for customers, an unlimited storage capacity and also the option to
remove WordPress, you can use any WordPress plugins that you want other than
the inbuilt plugins, you can run your own ads and also not be obligated to share the
revenue, you can create your own online store to buy and sell things, and so on. But
beware, you are also responsible to update and back your content up by yourself.

It is important to understand at this stage that there are two websites -

WordPress.com and WordPress.org. Both of them are quite different with
WordPress.org

giving you complete freedom over your website, but also the responsibility to
maintain and grow it. WordPress on the other hand throws in a lot of freebies along
with hand-holding, but has a great deal of control over your website. If you are
registered with one and want to shift. This is how.

Second, register your domain name.

Once you have chosen your host, you will need to finalise your domain name. Your
domain name is the name that your website will be known as. For example,
www.mysme.com. So, think of an appropriate name for your website and then
check if it is not already taken. For example, click your desired domain name on the
name search tool on GoDaddy and see if the domain is available. When you click on
that link, this page will appear:

37
Source: GoDaddy

In case your domain name is taken, you will need to think of another name or alter a
tad the name that you already have in your mind. In some cases, certain domain
registrars also charge a certain fee to get in touch with who has your desired
domain name and buy it for you.

Also read: How to buy a domain name for your small business website

In case your domain name is available, you will need to register it immediately. The
domain could be bought on an average for as minimum a price like Rs 99 for two
years if it is your first website. The prices may vary from registrar to registrar. You
could also choose among different versions for your website, such
as .in, .co.in, .org.in etc.
Third, choose the template, images, and texts that will define your business

Your host will have a range of templates that you can choose from for your website.
You will always have the option for customers/visitors to add the page to YouTube
or share it on social media or locate your physical store/office on Google maps.

Look for templates that are easy on the eye but aesthetic and demonstrative as
themes for your website.
Weebly, for example, that has more than 1.5 billion business websites created in
India, offers myriad elements that you can simply dragging from the sidebar. In
order to change the text in the template, you can simply double click on the
template box and to change the size, you will need to drag it from a corner.

38
Source: Weebly

Weebly can be easy for an SME that sells limited products. If your enterprise is
bigger and deals with multiple products, you can also check WordPress, GoDaddy,
or Shopify.

You should also develop your content by being sure of how you want to introduce
yourself to your visitors. For the same, you will have sections such as 'about us', 'our
services', 'gallery', and 'contact us'

Fourth, choose your logo.

The logo for your business and consequently your website, is what will influence the
overall design. You can always scan your logo and paste it on your website.

For example, once you have created an account on GoDaddy, you will need to go to
the settings in GoDaddy webmail, open the general tab in 'more settings'. Choose
where you want to place the logo image under email signature, after that when you
click on 'insert inline image', you get the option to insert your logo saved in your
computer. If you do not have a logo in mind, your host will help you design one.
There are also several software that can help you create your business logo. Some
of the popular software for Indian SMEs are Adobe Photoshop, DesignCrowd,

39
Vistaprint etc.

Once you have finalized the domain, template, logo, content, and services in your
website, you are good to go. Always remember to backup your data and update
your content regularly.

3.1What can Business Intelligence do for You?
The digital age people live in today provides heaps of information that businesses
can utilize when making critical decisions, but that is only possible with proper
organization. Not every piece of information out there has worth to a company, and
that is what business intelligence is all about. BI involves the use of technology to
collect and analyze data then condense it into actionable reports for decision
makers. Not a lot of companies incorporate BI into their core functions, which is
partly due to the lack of understanding on what it is and because some managers
don’t think it is suitable for their operations. So, why should your corporation,
whatever its size, spend money and time establishing a BI systems?

Informed Decisions
Companies are driven by strategic planning,
which is only possible if the administration can
make objective decisions. With business
intelligence analytics, managers can receive
data from different aspects of the company
such as financial, customer, and production
that has been condensed into well-detailed
reports. A lot of entrepreneurs make avoidable
mistakes when deciding on crucial matters,
mainly because they were working with
inaccurate or unreliable information. BI
prevents that. For example, before deciding if
a particular brand should be cut from
production, you can gather all the individual
data on the product line and gauge its
performance first, thus giving you clear insight.
Eliminate Waste
Wastage in commercial entities is not new and can be caused by any number of
things from inefficiencies to poor productivity. A business intelligence system is
useful in detecting all kinds of wastage in companies, which can otherwise, be hard
to accomplish because you may not even realize there is such an issue. BI systems
are centralized, making it less complicated to get data from different sections of an
organization. The system can tell if there are overlaps that may be causing you to
lose money.

45
Enhance Customer Service
Business intelligence analytics provide an
understanding of what your clients are
looking for. By gathering and analyzing data
from previous customer interactions, your
BI system can point out the areas that are
lacking so that you know where to focus
improvements. The company can
implement the necessary measures to
guarantee customers receive quality
services.
Improve Sales
Another advantage that BI has to your corporation is availing relevant data
concerning sales trends and product performances, which is critical when looking
for ways to grow your revenue. When you know which products are doing well and
which areas of your company are generating good revenue, you can strategize on
how to capitalize on that information.
Save Time
Gathering, analyzing, and reporting data without business intelligence tools can be
excruciatingly slow. Also, there is the threat of human error when collecting
information the traditional way. With the right systems, it takes minutes to pull the
information you require and package it for easier comprehension, meaning
employees spend less time compiling data. The time and human resources saved
can be diverted to other useful tasks.
Gain Competitive Advantage
Business intelligence analytics can give you an edge over competitors because
information is power. When you have the latest industry trends and key market
patterns at your fingertips, you can make decisions faster than your rivals. Slow and
untimely access to information can be a great impediment to the growth of a
company and BI is a viable solution in such instances. Additionally, a BI system can
guide you in conducting predictive analysis, which means going beyond simple
analytics, and that offers some leverage among competitors. BI also allows
managers not just to react to changing market conditions but to predict them as
well, and that has obvious benefits.

46
Understand Consumers
Commercial enterprises need more than a
basic comprehension of what their
customers want, hence the importance of
market research. Business intelligence
analytics can compile all the information
your company has on its clients, which can
then be utilized to learn their behavior.
Knowing which offers to extend to a
particular customer and at what time to
take such action can boost your
organization’s market share. With the right
data, you can learn of why some customers
stay, and others leave then introduce strategies to reduce defection.
Identify Opportunities
The growth of an enterprise relies on the ability of its managers to identify good
prospects and capitalizing fully on them. Companies with business intelligence
systems can pinpoint market trends and conditions, which your entity may not be
investing in. Managers can learn the strengths and capabilities of a corporation, in
addition to the weaknesses that competitors may be exploiting. By using accurate
data, decision-makers can come up with tactics to benefit from.
