Dear Young Christian Student,

Greetings of peace.

The YCS has been in Malaysia since 1957 and was introduced to Sarawak in 1966. I praise
and thank God for His blessing on YCS movement for the past 46 years in the Archdiocese
of Kuching. In 2006, Kuching YCS has courageously hosted an International YCS event
South East Asia (SEA) Session followed by Asian Session and Council (ASC) in 2009. Both
events were held in St Lukas’ Catholic Centre, Kota Padawan. Apart from that, there are
annual Mid-Year Camp (MYC), Leadership Formation Camp (LFC), Student Leader Animator

1
Gathering (SLAG), Joseph Cardijn (JC) Camp and house to house Christmas Carolling. The
Kuching YCS has been enriched by these annual events for the past years. I praise and
thank God that there are many faith-filled and committed YCS leaders in the Archdiocese
of Kuching

This simple booklet is produced by a group of committed Young Christian Student

animators working hand in hand with the Commission for Youth. The booklet serves as a
guide for the Kuching YCS to organize student camp, the role of the YCS ministry leaders,
criteria for effective YCS leader, to select new committee members in the schools and the
role of the YCS animators.

The Methodology of See, Judge and Act is a simple and practical way used by the YCS
movement to help students analyze and process situations in their lives and to identify a
more meaningful, practical ways to deal with the students’ milieu. It also gives the YCS a
more personal foundation in their faith.

May this simple guideline serve as an effective tool for the Kuching YCS to continue serving
and sharing God’s love with their families, friends, school community and society.

“Formation through Action” – Cardinal Joseph Cardijn

In solidarity,

The Asian YCS Creed

As one Asian YCS Family, we believe that:

 All human beings are created in the image and likeness of God,
equal in dignity. When this dignity is trampled upon, it is an
offence to the Creator. All people are responsible in enhancing
and protecting this dignity.
 Students, with great capacity to love, have a mission to ensure
that this dignity is protected at all times and in all situations.

2
 The YCS as a movement of the students, by the students, and for
the students, is a space to exercise this mission. In this process
they are accompanied by chaplains and animators.
 The YCS as a movement of the students, by the students and for
the students, is a space to exercise this mission. In this process
they are accompanied by chaplains and animators
 The YCS is an action-orientated movement, liberative in nature,
and aims to remove structures and systems that do not respect
the human dignity.
 Motivated by our Prophetic Spirituality and with the Review of
Life (See-Judge-Act / Awareness-Reflection-Action) as our way of
life, students are transformed and empowered to go beyond the
self in solidarity with the struggles of the weak and marginalized.
 Through inter-personal relationship with the whole of humanity
and with love at the heart of every action, the YCS enables human
persons to become a family, a community after the heart of the
Creator whose compassion, care and justice are its pulse.
 An Alternative Community is within our reach when we put out
faith in human goodness, which is inspired by Christ.

The YCS Creed

As Young Christian Students we believe in God.

We believe that God created the universe

And that we, as part of God’ creation,
Are invited to help complete God’s plans.

We believe that the earth

Has been entrusted to us,
To care for, to nurture and respect.
3
People, as God’s creation,
Have a dignity and worth beyond measure,
And deserve to be treated with respect and understanding.

For this to be achiever

We are called to be active participants in life,
To communicate with one another,
And to accept and love each other unconditionally.

We believe our schools should promote these values through encouraging

students to form
And question their own opinions and beliefs,
And treating each student,
As a worthwhile individual,
Who has unique needs and talents.

Our schools should educate for life.

And we believe that living is through actions, not just words.

Amen.

THE YCS EMBLEM

“A sower went out to sow his seed… the seed

is the Word of God” (Luke 8:4-18)

4
An ear of wheat entwined around the cross

The Wheat:
Christ went out to sow a seed in the world. We are called to sow His seed
in the students’ world.

“Unless a wheat falls into earth and dies it remains alone. But if it dies,
It bears much fruit.” (John 12:29)

The Cross:
The cross is the symbol of Christ, of courage and sacrifice. Sometimes,
following Him is hard.

“Christ emptied himself, taking the form of a servant being born in the
likeness of a man… He humbled himself and became obedient unto death,
even death on a cross” (Philippians 2:7-8)

We are called to take up our cross daily and follow Christ (Luke 9:23),
serve with courage and sacrifice.

THE YCS MOVEMENT

What is Young Christian Students (YCS)?

 A Movement of the Students, by the Students and for the Students, who
in and by all acts of their daily lives, form each other, support each other,
help each other, love each other and together prepare themselves for
their future.
 A Lay Movement, which shares the Mission and Life of the Church
 A Cell-based Movement, where groups of students in a particular
community gather together regularly to do Review Of Life
 An International Catholic Organization (ICO) recognized by the Vatican
and an International Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), with
consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC, and we are active
participants in these forums.

5
 Is a Movement and not just an organization; a community of students
with a common vision – of making God’s Kingdom reign on this Earth
here & now, for all people to live in dignity.
 An International Movement with more than 90 YCS National movements
in seven regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, North
America & Australia) with regional secretariats. The International
Secretariat is in Paris, France.

How it Works?
 You are Important
YCS does not use speeches or lectures as a regular part of the meeting. Each
member participates actively and everyone’s comments and opinions are valued.
Through use of group discussion the members have the benefit of the experience
and ideas of all members. The advisor does not take an active part in the meeting
but prepares the meeting with the leader beforehand and comments after the
meeting.

 Action is Important
YCS is not a study club. Specific action should come out of each meeting to
help you to help young people to lead a fuller Christian Life. Projects which are
carried out provide the training ground for leadership and responsibility

What it does?
 It helps students realize their responsibility in the Lay Apostolate
 It helps realize the relationship between religion & everyday life
 It trains you for leadership in your organization, community projects,
parish, school and various activities of later life
 It brings you in contact with other young people
 It gives you the opportunity of being helpful to others
 It helps you prepare for the future
 It gives you the chance to become acquainted with the priests of the
parish and teachers of the school
 It makes you aware that Christ needs your help, that only you can bring
Him to certain areas of society

THE MISSION OF THE YCS

6
 Formative: A primary vocation of the YCS is the formation of the
students to be critical and responsible actors in school, church & society,
as well as in the future.
 Evangelization: To evangelize today, is to announce the Good News to
the Poor of Today – that is to share and give witness to the Life-giving
and Liberating Message of Jesus Christ – it is TO DO, as well as TO TELL.
 Transformative: YCS seek to transform unjust structures & situations.
Therefore, the transformation happens at two levels – personal, as well
as societal. Though we are concerned with the whole society, we focus
on the student milieu.
 Liberation: YCS tries to see the causes of issues faced by the student
milieu and society and then attempts to respond to these with a Liberal
perspective.

Our Focus Today:

Holistic formation for students & youth animator; education; understand
the impact of Informative Technology; International Solidarity; promote
human rights; gender sensitivity; protect the environment.

Option of YCS:
As a Movement, which derives its Mission from Jesus, and which is part
of the Church, the option of YCS is an Option for the Poor.

HISTORY OF CARDINAL JOSEPH CARDIJN

Joseph Cardijn, the eldest son of a working class family, was born on 13
november 1882, in a small town in the outskirts of Brussels, Belgium. His father, a
coal worker, could neither read nor write. His mother had been a domestic
servant.
Cardijn grew up in an industrial environment. Every day he was
confronted by the struggles of working men, women, and children. He came to
know the workers and tradespeople of his town, their struggles and sufferings,
their work and their aspirations. The worker problem began to take shape in his
mind as a double-sized problem. Workers were victims of the wage-earning
condition: they were separated from the Church by the consequences of that
system.
In 1903 Joseph received a telegram and hurrying home he found his
father near death. Beside his father’s death-bed, Cardijn made a vow which was

7
to be his life’s guiding star: “Father, you killed yourself for me! I shall kill myself
for the working-class of the world!”
His long journey to priesthood began at the seminary of Malines. In
1906 he was ordained; then followed a year of further studies and five years of
school teaching. Cardijn knew that he was far from understanding the social
conditions which had such a lethal effect on young workers. During his holidays
he visited factories not merely in Belgium but also in Germany, France and
England.
In 1912 he was appointed curate at Laeken, a parish where 90% of the
15000 parishioners were under-paid workers. He met the workers at the factory
gates. He asked the simple questions: where do you work? What’s it like there?
How did you get the job? Are there prospects? Will you come over to my place
tonight and we can have a cigarette together? There were not the usual
questions of a priest. The workers were used to be being asked: do you still go to
Mass? Do you frequent the sacraments? He won their friendship by his genuine
interest in their lives.
Cardijn adopted revolutionary methods of training youth in responsibility,
initiative and spirituality. The essentials of his method were:
 the experts on young workers were the workers themselves;
 young workers had to change the situations that adversely affect them;
 material conditions have a big effect on the spiritual;
 true education comes through action and reflection;
 there is no solution of the problem apart from Christ
The movement caught on. Some hailed it as a blessing from God. Others
condemned it as revolutionary, radical, subversive ad dangerous to Church and
state. Many were uncertain. Cardijn himself was branded a communist. Under
pressure, Cardinal Mercier banned the movement. Cardijn’s work was shattered.
There was only one place to turn – the Pope.
Cardijn went to Rome and met Pope Pius XI, by sneaking into the papal
quarters. After explaining the nature and purpose of his work, Cardijn was told by
the Pope, ‘Not only do we bless your Movement, we want it, we make it ours’. In
1957, Pius XII said, ‘ The YCW is the most perfect form of Catholic Action’.
The movement spread through Belgium, then to France, England and other
Europen countries, across to North and South America and to Africa, Asia and, in
1942, to Australia.
Cardijn’s ideas had a big influence on Vatican II. In 1965, Cardijn was made a
Cardinal by Pope Paul VI, who described him as ‘one of the men who in this
century has worked most for the Church’. He died on July 24, 1967. He had given
young people a movement, a method and a vision – a vision that they can change

8
the world. Today, years later, one meet many YCS members with a real love of
Cardijn, because what he created has completely changed their lives.

THE REVIEW OF LIFE

See-Judge-Act
(Awareness-Reflection-Action)

The Review of Life is a method used by the YCS Movement to help

students break down and process situations in their lives. It helps students
identify a more meaningful, more practical way to deal with situations, not just in
their groups but in their lives.
The Review of Life is broken up into three sessions: SEE, JUDGE, ACT.

SEE
There are various ways to begin a Review of Life. It can either be a set
topic set up by students organizing the meeting, or a situation that another
student may bring up during the meeting. Usually it is something that has
affected students, or something that has had a big impact on them. Sometimes
what one may think is insignificant may be a good Review of Life topic.
Considerations have to be made such as urgency, relevance of the situation to the
group & number of people affected. The first thing to do is to describe the
situation in as much detail as possible:
 What is the situation?
 When did it happen?
 What was said?
 What were some of the feelings involved?
All group members should participate in this, either by adding their own
understanding/account of the situation, or by asking questions. Questioning is
very important to the success of the whole Review. We need to keep asking
“Why?” Not only is it important to describe the situation, but also to look for its
cause. For those involved in the situation it becomes very easy to see only one
side, and this is where other group members can help draw out other aspects of
the situation by asking questions to those involved.

JUDGE
This section of the Review of Life is about weighing up the situation in
light of your own personal value and faith. The Judge section enables us to reflect
on the enables us to reflect on the whole situation and get grasp of the actions,
attitudes, and values of the people involved.

9
We have to ask ourselves, “Is what is happening consistent with our own
personal morals, values and faith?” It should also be a time for self-criticism and
personal reflection. We need to ask ourselves questions and challenge ourselves
and others.
 What do we and don’t we value in this situation?
 Is what is happening acceptable?
 What should be happening in this situation?
This part of the Review is very important and it often helps if you include a
passage from the Bible. This will usually help you understand yourself, the
situation and our faith a lot better.

ACT
The Review of Life not only asks us to look at a situation and reflect upon
it, it also calls us to take up action, whether it be done personally or as a group. It
is vital that the group completes this final and important part of the Review.
Our aim is to work with those affected by the situation, discussing with
them as well as supporting and encouraging them. Our action is often not big or
direct but it challenges others to reflect. Our actions must be educative for others
and ourselves.
It is always possible to come up with an action from a Review. We need
to ask, “What action can WE take to improve this situation?” Our action should
reflect our personal faith and group values. All actions have an effect, even the
small ones.

Evaluation of Action
It is important to follow up on actions that were mentioned at the last
meeting and to evaluate how successful you were in carrying them out. This
ensures that the group members will be committed to see the action through and
continue to learn from each other’s experiences.

Leadership
Time Frame: 30-45 minutes

14
Opening Introduction:
Leadership is a quality within a person, which is crucial and essential to lead our
young people to lead and be led. Leadership is a function of knowing yourself
having a vision that is well communicated, building trust among colleagues and
taking effective action to realize your own leadership potential.

SEE:
Present a slide show with different types of leaders (political, religious, sport, film
star, singers, parents, others)

1. What do you see in the pictures? (let each respond)

2. What do you understand of the word ‘LEADER’ and ‘LEADERSHIP’?
3. Have a discussion on qualities of a Leadership
JUDGE:

the scripture)
 Invite them to share their daily experiences based on their
understanding on the scripture hint in a small group.
 Invite 1 or 2 students to share at least 2 points in the big group.

ACTION:
After seeing and critically judging and reflecting on the topic Leadership:
 Invite them to write down their individual action
 Allow them to share personally to the group on what action plan to take
(individual and group plan)

Conclusion:
“Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening
the heart. Leadership is about inspiration – of oneself and of others. Great
leadership is about human experiences. Leadership is not a formula or a program,
it is a human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of
others. It is an attitude, not a routine.”

CRITERIA TO BE AN EFFECTIVE YCS LEADER

1. A heart to serve Christ through serving students in YCS

- As a Christian movement, serving Jesus Christ is our first priority!
A YCS leader is called to serve others as how Jesus served His Father

15
through reaching out to those around Him. A passionate heart to
serve is far better than any leadership skills possessed.

2. A humble heart willing to grow

- Just as how Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, a YCS leader is
called to be humble in service, willing to be advised by those
around, admit mistakes and faults and look forward to improve to
be better for the cause of the students and also personal growth.

3. An open mind willing to learn

- A YCS leader will encounter many new opportunities, but an
effective one will take the leap of faith to make it into an
experience. A leader who can listen to others and is open to their
opinions and suggestions will be more effective than one who only
hears him or herself.

4. A member of the YCS movement for at least one year with

experience of service
- An effective YCS leader will realize that it is important to
understand the spirituality, methodology, principles, and structures
of YCS to lead the students. A minimum of one year experience as a
member (or even better, as a committee) can provide a big help in
understanding on how to lead students in YCS.

GUIDELINES: SELECTING THE NEW COMMITTEE IN SCHOOL

1. Prior to selection of the new committee

1.1 To elect a new committee is the best method of selecting the new
leaders of a Young Christian Students (YCS) cell.
16
1.1.1 The YCS movement believes that it functions for the students, by the
students and with the students alongside the close guidance of
teachers, animators and chaplains.
1.1.2 In observing article 1.1.1, all YCS members everywhere deserve the
right to vote for their new leaders with the guidance and
recommendation of their teachers, animators and chaplains.
1.1.3 In the event where an election process is considered unsuitable due
to the inevitable circumstances and challenges faced by the YCS cell
after much discussion and reflection, alternative methods can be
carried out.

1.2 Nearing the months of the transition, the outgoing YCS committees are
encouraged to get capable junior members to be probationary leaders
and lead in different activities of the cell.

1.2.1 This is to train and familiarize the junior members with the running
of the weekly activities.

2. Nomination Process

2.1 The outgoing YCS committee together with the school’s teacher
animators should discuss, plan, and nominate 2 to 3 candidates for each
post.

2.1.1 To ensure the future leaders of the school’s YCS cell are able to lead,
the outgoing committees and the teacher animators are responsible
to nominate candidates for the students to elect later on.
2.1.2 They are responsible to review and nominate the candidates
critically after much evaluation, discussion, reflection, and prayers.
2.1.3 Based on past experiences, certain students have nominated
candidates who do not know the commitment of being in a YCS
school committee which will affect the cell throughout the whole
term.
2.1.4 The candidates must be active YCS members in the school for at
least minimum of 2 years.

2.2 Once the list has been decided and approved by the outgoing committee
and teacher animators, the nominees should be approached privately
and be informed of them being on the list of candidates.
17
2.2.1 This is to also to seek the permission and consent of the candidates
whether they are willing to stand for election.

2.3 Campaigning is not encouraged.

2.3.1 Due to the nature of this movement (religious body), campaigning

for the posts are inappropriate.
2.3.2 Article 2.3 is obsolete if teacher animators and school authorities
allow the campaigning.

3. Election Process – Rules and Procedures

3.1 The process of election should be held at a time where all (if not, most)
members of the school cell are able to attend and vote.

3.1.1 The election process can be carried out as one of the weekly
activities chosen in the year.

3.1.2 However, should circumstances hinder all or most members to vote,

a more suitable time and venue can be decided to ease the process
of election.
3.1.3 Sub-article 3.1.2 applies should the election process clashes with
other important events that affect the students such as school
examinations and other school-related activities.
3.1.4 As like other normal cell activities, the members should be well
informed of the time and place of the election process to ensure as
many members to vote.

3.2 Every member of the YCS cell of the school has the right to vote freely
without force, compulsion or manipulation.

3.2.1 Observe sub-articles 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 above.

3.2.2 This article applies to the outgoing committee members as well. It is
optional for the candidates standing in the election.
3.2.3 A member should be allowed one vote each for every post that is
being contested.
3.2.4 However, article 3.2.3 can be omitted should the outgoing
committee together with the teacher animators, after much
discussion and reflection, decide that there is the need to allow
more than one vote from each member for every post that is being
contested.
18
3.3 All the main posts should be put to be contested by the approved
candidates.

3.3.1 This article refers to the posts of President, Vice President, Secretary,
Vice Secretary (if any), Treasurer, and Vice Treasurer (if any).
3.3.2 The posts to be put out for election usually begins with the President
and Vice President first, followed by the Secretary and Vice
Secretary (if any), and finally the Treasurer and Vice Treasurer (if
any).

3.3.3 The reason behind sub-article 3.3.2 is to give all the approved
candidates for election a fair and equal chance to contest for the
President post.
3.3.4 Sub-article 3.3.3 is obsolete should the nominees for every post has
been decided.

3.4 When the process of voting begins, candidates should not be present at
the voting room/area until a final decision has been made.

3.4.1 The candidates can be escorted to a nearby location where they

cannot hear or see the voting process. For example, another
classroom, hut in the school compound, and etc.
3.4.2 The reason for article 3.4 is to foster a healthy election where the
majority of the votes decide the results and the difference in figures
should not be emphasized.
3.4.3 In addition, article 3.4 can also assist in the voting process by
preventing personal interests of the candidates to affect the process
should a decision cannot be made.

3.5 Simple majority (>1/2, >50%) should be the deciding factor of the
election.

3.5.1 Article 3.5 stands to facilitate an effective election process for school
cell level.
3.5.2 However, article 3.5 can be omitted should the outgoing committee
together with the teacher animators, after much discussion and
reflection, find that other form of majorities are more suitable such
as two-thirds (2/3, 66%+), three-quarters (3/4, 75%) or others.
3.5.3 With reference to the International YCS Asian Session and Council
(ASC) rules for election, a majority of two-thirds should be the
deciding factor of the election.
19
3.5.4 The candidate with the second highest votes in an election for a
post usually becomes the vice of that particular post. For example,
in the election to vote for the post of President, the candidate with
the highest votes would be the President whereas the candidate
with the second highest would be the Vice President.

3.6 Candidates who have been elected into the post should express their
acceptance or non-acceptance after the voting process is done.

3.6.1 This article stands to give the elected candidate the right to
sincerely accept or turn down the post without the force,
compulsion or manipulation by anyone.
3.6.2 For example, should a candidate be elected into the post of
Secretary, but feels that it will be too much of a commitment to
his/her student life, he/she can voice her concerns out and take an
alternative (swap to become the Vice Secretary) or to have another
voting, to which the outgoing committee and teachers or animators
have consented.

4. Post-elections
4.1 The outgoing committee should continue to guide and advice the newly
elected committee in the running of the YCS cell meetings and
gatherings.

4.1.1 Although the new committee has been elected into position, they
still require proper guidance and mentoring by the outgoing
committee to ensure smooth transition of leadership.
4.1.2 This process can last to such a time when the outgoing committee
express their need to focus on their academics and are unable to
commit to mentoring.

4.2 Both incoming and outgoing committees are encouraged to have a

handing-over ceremony.

4.2.1 This ceremony, or anything similar, is mainly a symbolic gesture of

the installation of the new committee and to appreciate the
outgoing committee.
4.2.2 The ceremony can take place as one of the weekly YCS gatherings of
the year, depending on how simple or elaborate it is.

20
4.3 It is the responsibility of both the incoming and outgoing committees to
help notify the office of the Kuching Archdiocesan Commission for Youth
which take charge of the Kuching YCS, with regards of the new leaders of
the school’s YCS cell.

4.3.1 To maintain continuous communication with the Kuching YCS and

the school’s YCS cell, the office of the Kuching Archdiocesan
Commission for Youth needs to be updated with the changes
happening.
4.3.2 It is also required for the incoming committee to provide contact
details of leaders to ensure their school’s YCS cell will constantly be
contacted by the office.
4.3.3 The outgoing committee has a responsibility to assist and ensure
that communication is established between the incoming committee
and the office of the Kuching Archdiocesan Commission for Youth.

which is intended to honour, and pray that we may learn to practice the virtue specially
taught us by that mystery.
“A plenary indulgence may be gained, under the usual condition, for the recitation of the
Rosary, in a church or public oratory or in the family. If the Rosary is said privately a partial
indulgence may be gained.”

Taize Prayers
The ecumenical and international Christian community of the Taize was founded
by Brother Roger in Taize, France in 1940. Their call is to lead “a parable of communion, a
simple reflection of that unique communion which is the Body of Christ, his church…”
As young people began to gather in Taize in search of God and of themselves,
the Taize community began to look for songs which would be “meditative and popular” –
“songs which would introduce people into a contemplative prayer which goes deep, yet at
the same time are not reserved for the specialist or the initiated, but on the contrary are
so simple that everyone can join in”.

How can we keep on praying together?

To celebrate a beautiful prayer with other, there do not have to be many people:
a small community of two or three can be enough. To glimpse the universal dimension of
communion in Christ, however, it is essential at least once a week to join the prayer of the
local Christian community, a parish or congregation where all the generations come
together, from children to elderly persons.

Setting up the Prayer-Space

If possible, try to meet in the church, making it beautiful and welcoming. If this is
not possible, it is important to make the prayer space as harmonious as you can, with a
cross, an icon or an open bible, candles, flowers. Place a carpet on the floor for those who
wish to pray kneeling or sitting on the ground; chairs or benches should also be available
for those who prefer. The lighting should be subdued, not glaring. It is preferable for all the
participants to face the same direction, as a way of expressing that our prayer is directed
not to one another but to Christ.

Singing
The song is one of the most essential elements of worship. Short chants,
repeated again and again, give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, they
express a basic reality of our faith, quickly grasped by the mind. As the words are sung
repetitively, this reality gradually penetrates the whole being. And these simple songs then
enable us to keep on praying when we are alone, by night or by day, sometimes in the
silence of our hearts when we are at work.
If a song is begun spontaneously, the key is generally too low. A guitar can give
the first note or accompany the melody. The person who begins the song should ensure
that the tempo does not slow down too much, as this tends to happen when the singing
goes on for a while.
Some practices should take place outside of the prayer itself, so that the
atmosphere remains meditative. During the prayer, no one should direct the music; in this
way everyone can face the cross, the icon or the altar. Songs in different languages are
appropriate for large international gatherings. In a neighbourhood prayer with all
generations present, most of the songs should be in languages understood by most. If
possible, give each person the lyrics of the songs. You can include a few well-known local
songs or hymns.
Structure
1. Meditative Song(s)
27
2. Psalm (Response: Alleluia)
3. Song (Song of light)
4. Scripture Reading
5. Meditative Chant
6. Silence (5 to 10 minutes)
7. Prayers of Intercession
8. Our Father
9. Concluding Prayer
10. Meditative Song(s)
11. Soft Music (Participants can left when desired)

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Prayer Before Confession
O God, My loving Father in heaven,
I adore You, I praise You, I thank You. Act of Contrition
I love You with all my heart. O my God because You are so good,
I am so sorry that I have offended
Send Your Holy Spirit, the spirit of love, into my heart.
Point out my sins. Give me courage to confess You and with the help of Your grace
them honestly. Help me to believe that you are always I will not sin again.
Willing to forgive.
Remove all my sins and guilt.
Fill me with peace.
Make me experience all your blessings of your love and mercy.
And send me away strong and happy and free with the freedom of the children of God
And ready to do better in the days ahead.
I ask this through Jesus Christ, you Son, who is my Lord and Saviour, now and forever.

Stations of the Cross for Teens

Prayer Before the Altar
Jesus, I want to give You some of my time right now. I know that’s something that I don’t always do. I
know in my heart that, when the pressures of being a teenager really seem to be heaped up all
around me, I should come to You for help. But I don’t just always remember to do that. So right now I
want to walk along beside You. I want to tell You about the things that are bothering me the most
right now. I want to share in Your suffering in this small way. That’s what I want to do right now. Be
with me as I try. Help me to understand the immense love that You offer through the way of the cross.
Help me to understand that Your death was not only a moment in time many years ago, but also an
act of unconditional love that lives in each of us every day. Help me to understand that You are “here
and now” and not “there and then.” Amen.
First Station
Jesus Christ Condemned to Death (Responding to Misjudgement)

Verse
At the Cross her station keeping,
Stood the mournful Mother weeping,
Close to Jesus to the last.
29
Meditation
Jesus stands, strong in His silence, as He is condemned to die for a crime He did not
commit. He has been betrayed by a friend, falsely accused, and judged wrongly. And yet
He accepts his punishment without a word of protest.

Prayer
Jesus, sometimes I’m misjudged also. Sometimes my friends ask me to do things that they
know I don’t want to do. Sometimes I think the whole world thinks that I’m stupid or
worthless just because I’m young. How am I supposed to respond to all this, Lord? Help
me to learn to respond as You did. Teach me not to lash out at these people (some of
whom love me) even if I don’t agree with them. Instead, help me to show them that I can
take the pressure and have enough sense and faith to make good decisions. Help me to
respond with love, and then be with me and help me through the tough times. Amen.

Second Station
Jesus Receives the Cross (Bearing Burdens)

Verse
Though her heart His sorrow sharing,
All His bitter anguish bearing,
Now at length the sword had passed.

Meditation
Jesus begins His terrible journey up the hill of Calvary. The weight of the cross bites into
His shoulders and He is reminded with each step that the pain He bears will be the cause
of our joy. Despite His pain, His mind is filled with thoughts of us.

Prayer
Jesus, sometimes it seems like I’m bearing a huge burden, and I know that You know how
that feels. So much is expected of me everywhere I turn, and sometimes I feel like I can’t
take it all. There are pressures at school like grades and test and decisions about college.
There are pressures at home and conflicts between my parents and me. There are
pressures with my friends, with my team mates, and with my fellow students. It’s not easy
being me. You bore the pain of cross. Help me to bear with all the pressures of being a
teenager and help me know that there is always hope. Let me know that I can go through
it all with Your help. Amen.
Third Station
Jesus Falls the First Time Under the Weight of the Cross (Falling & Failing)

Verse
Oh, how sad and sore distressed
Was that Mother highly blessed
Of the sole-begotten One!

Meditation

30
Jesus stumbles along the hot, dusty, rocky road. He is crushed under the weight of the
wood and is bruised and beaten down by the soldiers. He falls, for even though He is fully
God, He is filled with the weakness of being fully human. This is the wonder of our God-
becomes-flesh in Jesus.

Prayer
Jesus, you know that sometimes I fail, and that’s a lot like falling. I don’t like it very much.
It seems like everything in the world is geared toward success and winning. So what
happens when I don’t make it? I feel like I’m letting everyone down: myself, my parents,
my teachers, my friends, my coach – the list goes on and on. So I guess what I need from
You right now, Lord, is permission to fail once in a while. As I see You here at this point in
your journey, I see You fallen by the side of the road. So I guess it is okay to fall and fail.
Just give me the strength and hope I need to get back up. Amen.

Fourth Station
Jesus is Met by His Blessed Mother (Faith in Each Other)

Verse
Christ above in torments hangs:
She beneath beholds the pangs
Of her dying glorious Son.
Meditation
Jesus – tired, sore, bruised, bloody and on his way to His own execution – looks up to see
the face of His mother along the road. What a moment for both of them. No words are
exchanged, but Jesus can see sadness and pain on her face. He knows that she was chosen
for this road, chosen to bear Him into the world, but He still knows the pain.
Prayer
Jesus, I can see that face of Your mother as she watches You go by on the way to Your
death. I can sense the sadness and questioning inside her. I know that it must not be easy
to be my parent. I know that sometimes I can be difficult and I’ve seen that look of sadness
on my parents’ faces. So I ask You to help me to be a better person, for my parents’ sakes.
And, Jesus, I also ask You to please help my parents. Show them that I need their love
along with their criticism. Help them to know that I will respond better to encouragement
and confidence than to demands and doubts. Give us both enough faith in You that we can
learn to have faith in each other. Amen.
Fifth Station
The Cross is Laid Upon Simon of Cyrene (Helping friends)

Verse
Is there one who would not weep,
Whelmed in miseries so deep
Christ’s dear Mother to behold?

Meditation
Just when Jesus begins to think that He can’t go on further, just when the soldiers begin to doubt that
Jesus can make the long journey up the hill, they grab a man from the side of the road and force him

31
to carry the cross. Simon feels the bite of the wood on his shoulders, and certainly he must have
wondered why he, an innocent man, should be asked to do this.

Prayer
Jesus, I think I know how Simon feels. He’s caught in the middle. He has no choice. He just has to do
what he has to do. On the other hand it’s a tough position to be in. But on the other, thrust into those
kinds of situations, we have a chance to show others what we’re made of. I often find myself caught in
the middle, caught between two friends who are fighting or two parents who can’t get along. It’s not
easy to know how to react in those situations, so I need Your help, Lord. Help me to be the one who
brings peace. Pull me out of the crowd. Lord, just like Simon, give me the wisdom and the right words
to help those I love through difficult times. Amen.

Sixth Station
The Face of Jesus is Wiped by Veronica (Helping Strangers)

Verse
Can the human heart refrain
From partaking in her pain,
In that Mother’s pain untold?

Meditation
Blood from the crown of thorns and sweat from the hard work of carrying the cross mix in Jesus’ face.
This is not an easy way to show love. The blood and sweat drip from Him and sting His eyes. From out
of the crowd steps a woman named Veronica who lovingly wipes the face of Jesus. It is a simple but
important act of love and compassion for the giver of all love and compassion.

Prayer
Jesus, so often it is easy to pass by someone who is in need. Either I just don’t want to get involved or
I think that my small act of kindness won’t make any difference. Those are dangerous thoughts, Lord,
and I know that’s not the attitude I want to take with me into adulthood. I know that I don’t like
adults who act that way, so why do I act that way now? Help me to understand that stopping to help
the new girl/boy at school find her/his way to class or giving encouragement to the new boy/girl on
the team are both ways in which I can show Your love to the world. Help me to remember that
wherever I do to help someone else I am showing those around me that there is something more
important in my life than me. And it’s You, Lord. Amen.

Seventh Station
Jesus Falls a Second Time (Continuing with Confidence)

Verse
Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
She beheld her tender Child
All with bloody scourges rent.

Meditation
Jesus has been wracked by pain, but He has been comforted by the care of Simon and Veronica. He
continues on His journey, feeling the rhythm of the road beneath His feet. As He falls again, all the
pain is renewed. A jolt of agony shoots through His body. But He rises again, and continues on His
way. He is thinking about you.

32
Prayer
Jesus, in this picture of You see a man who knows what he has to do and, despite the obstacles and
the pain, continues on the road with confidence. I don’t very often have that confidence, Lord.
Sometimes I’m just not sure of myself. Some of the people in my life have given me confidence, but
others have left me with doubts about myself and my abilities. I wonder who is right. For some reason
or other, it’s easier to believe those who have filled me with doubt. Please help me, Lord, to see the
good in myself. Give me the strength and confidence to tackle the challenges in my life. And when
everything seems too much to bear and I just want to give up, remind me of this picture of You, rising
once more from the dusty road. Amen.

Eighth Station
The Woman of Jerusalem Mourn for Our Lord (Sharing Faith)

Verse
For the sins of His own nation
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent.

Meditation
As Jesus walked along the road towards His death, some people laughed. Some stood in silence and
wondered who He was. Some cheered. But one group of women, seeing Him hurting, tired, and
beaten down, cried. This small act of faith and courage in the face of adversity supported Jesus in His
grief, perhaps when He needed it most.

Prayer
Jesus, I know I’m not always like these women. Sometimes I have a hard time showing compassion to
others. Sometimes I have hard time caring about anyone other than my family, a few close friends,
and myself. It’s much easier not to get involved, much easier not to put myself in a situation that
could be uncomfortable for me. It’s very easy to look at poor, the homeless and the sick, and just be
happy that it’s not me in that situations. But I also know I’m wrong to do that. So I’m asking You for
help. Give me the strength and courage to be compassionate to others, just as You are passionate to
me. By what I say and what I do, may the world always see that I draw my life, my strength, and
everything in me that is good from You. Amen.

Ninth Station
Jesus Falls the Third Time Under the Cross (Remembering Jesus)
Verse
O thou Mother! Fount of love!
Touch my spirit from above,
Make my heart with thine accord.
Meditation
Jesus can now see Golgotha looming ahead of Him. He knows the end is near. He is
parched and dry, so weak from the loss of blood and the sheer pain than He can barely
stand, much less carry the heavy cross. He falls again. Still, His executioners mercilessly
urge him on.
Prayer

33
Jesus, when I see You like this, I feel bad that I don’t always remember You. As I run
through my life, between school and sports, I know that I don’t take enough time to think
about You. How could You have borne so much pain? Why did You choose to do this for
me? I’m not sure that I’m worth it. If I ever begin to doubt the love You have so freely
given me, remind me of all that You went through to gain my salvation and show Your love
for all people. Help me to remember that no matter how many times my sins separate me
from You; You are always there to forgive me. Amen.

Tenth Station
Jesus is Stripped of His Garments (Being a Fool for Jesus)
Verse
Make me feel as thou hast felt;
Make my soul to glow and melt
With the love of Christ my Lord.
Meditation
Jesus finally reaches the top of the hill – the place of His death. His reward for completing
this part of the journey is to be savagely and brutally stripped. His open wounds cling to
His garments, so the pain is excruciating as the soldiers rip his garments from His body,
taking flesh and blood along with the cloth. To be forced to stand naked before the jeering
crowds is humiliating for Jesus.
Prayer
Jesus, you know that it’s not easy for me to talk to others about my faith in You. I feel
foolish when I try sometimes. I suspect my friends think I’m a fool for trying to be Catholic.
Sometimes I wonder if they’re right and I’m wrong. Those are the times I need you most,
Jesus. I need to remember You as You are now being made to play the fool for the
laughing, jeering crowd. Help me to remember that it’s okay to considered a fool for Your
sake. Give the courage to be strong in my faith in You and to be resolute , even if the rest
of the world considers me foolish. Amen.

Eleventh Station
Jesus is Nailed to the Cross (Accepting the Gift of Life)
Verse
Holy Mother! pierce me through;
In my heart each wound renew,
Of my Saviour crucified.
Meditation
With a thief to His left and right and encircled by a crowd of on lookers, Jesus gently and
willingly stretches out His hands ad accepts the torture of the nails. In the midst of this
most intense agony, his heart remains on His people: “Father forgive them,” He prays, “for
they know not what they do.”
Prayer
Jesus, I know that sometimes I take my life for granted. In fact, sometimes when things
aren’t going well at home or at school or with my friends, I begin to wonder what use my

34
life is. I just don’t see the point sometimes. But as You stretch out Your hands and accept
the executioner’s nails, I can’t help but see the meaning in my own life. Since I was a child I
have been told that You did this for me – You died for me. Thank you, Jesus, for the gift.
And if I ever doubt my own meaningfulness, help me to remember You, dying for me.
Amen.

Twelfth Station
Jesus Dies on the Cross (Giving our Lives to Jesus)
Verse
Let me share with thee His pain,
Who for all my sins was slain,
Who for me in torments died.
Meditation
Jesus doesn’t immediately die when they nail Him to the cross. He suffers for three long,
agonizing hours first. The giver of life, who stood side by side with the Father at the
moment of creation, is now dead. His Mission on earth is nearly accomplished. He gives up
His spirit, and gives us His life.
Prayer
Jesus, I have a lot of decisions to make in the coming years, and some of them will affect
the rest of my life where to go to college, what career to choose, whom to marry. And I
know I’ll be making other decisions every day of my life, some of them just as important as
the big “life decisions.” I’ll have to decide who my friends will be, what I will put in my
body, and what I will do with my body. Tough decisions, all of them. What I want to do
right now is give my life to You so that I won’t be tempted to give it to someone or
something else. With You at the centre of my life, I now I’ll be able to make the right
decisions. Stay close to me, Jesus. Amen.

Thirteenth Station
Jesus is Taken Down from the Cross (Having Courage)
Verse
Let me mingle tears with thee,
Mourning Him who mourn’d for me,
All the days that I may live.
Meditation
When the crowds finally when away, a few of Jesus’ followers were brave enough to ask for His body
so they could bury it. Two men carefully remove the body from the cross and lay it in the arms of His
waiting mother. Tears run down Mary’s cheeks as she holds the son given to her so many before.
Prayer
Jesus, I don’t always have the courage I need to openly tell others how important You are to me. In
fact, I know that sometimes my words and actions tell my friends that You mean nothing to me.
Sometimes I turn away from You, leaving You hanging there on the cross instead of being brave
enough to take You down and show You to the world. I want to be one of Your followers. I want to
hold You up for the world to see. I want to do what You ask. But I need Your help. I need You to make
me strong and brave. Having faith means having courage, but I know I can’t do it on my own. Help me.
Amen.

35

Fourteenth Station
Jesus is Laid in the Tomb (Changing our Lives)
Verse
By the Cross with thee to stay;
there with thee to weep and pray,
is all I ask of thee to give.
Meditation
Mary and the friends of Jesus prepare His body for burial and lay it in a tomb cut from solid rock. They
have forgotten – or perhaps failed to believe – the promise Jesus made to them. He will rise from the
dead. As they roll the rock across the doorway, sealing the tomb, they feel that this special time with
Jesus has come to an end. They know their lives will never be the same again.
Prayer
Jesus, I need my life changed, just as you changed the lives of those men and women. Help me to see
that once I know the power of You in my life, I will never be the same. I’m always happy with the
choices I make. The people I hang out with and the way I spend my time. Sometimes I find doing
things I know You don’t want me to do. I know I need to change, and know this change will be
possible only if I make You the centre of my life. So be my centre, Jesus.
Amen.

Concluding Prayer

Thank You, Jesus, for allowing me to follow You on Your journey of pain and love. Allow my small act
of faith to fill my life with renewed love for You and for Your Church. Give me the courage to live my
life in a way that others may see You in me. Help me to remember that I have hope because of the life
you have given me. Thank you, Jesus, for Your way of the cross that gives me confidence, knowing
that You are with me always, by my side. Amen.

MAZMUR 81
O…betapa indahnya dan betapa eloknya
Bila saudara seiman hidup dalam kesatuan
Bersorak-sorai lah bagi Allah
Kekuatan kita
Cho:
Bersorak-sorai lah bagi Allah kita
Bak urapan di kepala harum
Angkatlah lagu bunyikanlah rebana
yang ke janggut dan jubahnya turun
Kecapi yang merdu, diiringi gambus
seperti embun di bukit Hermon mengalir ke
Tiuplah sangka-kala pada bulan baru
bukit Sion
Pada bulan purnama….
di sanalah diperintahkan Tuhan
(BILA!!....pada hari ini..)
agar berkat-berkat dicurahkan
kehidupan untuk selamanya
O…betapa indahnya..
