Hardening & Tempering
Heat treating is one of the most important steps in the production of a part,
providing a combination of hardness, strength, and toughness. Eckel in-
house heat treat insures parts are properly treated to meet our high quality
standards. The parts are heated and quenched in a controlled carbon
enriched atmosphere, the process consists of heating the part to a
specific temperature and holding for sufficient time to ensure the whole
work-piece is at temperature, then rapidly cooling it in oil (quenching).
The resultant temperature changes induce physical transformation of the
steel, resulting in mechanical property changes.
Design
Product Testing
Tongs and power units are performance rated to insure the unit meets or
exceeds strict quality standards. Every tong is performance rated on a one
of a kind test stand that is able to simulate a make-up and break-out
torques in a variety of different loads. Using a detailed procedural
checklist, the unit is inspected, greased, and adjusted for strict compli-
ance to Eckel standards. Eckel maintains a tong test data report indicating
the unit weight, rpm, and torque ratings.
Upon request Eckel will supply a test certificate for tongs and power units
that certify the equipment met or exceeded our high quality standards and
performance ratings.

Positioning System
The Eckel TONGBOSS automated tong positioning system
maneuvers any size of Eckel hydraulic power tongs pre-
cisely around the tubular during running and pulling opera-
tions. One operator controls the tong positioning and tong
functions hydraulically from the rig floor. The TONGBOSS
is unique to all tong positioning systems on the market
today in that it requires no magnetism, bolting, welding, or
rig floor tracks. In developing the TONGBOSS, Eckel set
some simple design goals. These goals were to im-
prove safety, operational costs, cycle time, and to
universally install on any rig.

in a power tong, look no further. Our 51/2 Hydra-Shift is sized
smaller in width than our 51/2 Standard model. Like all of our
51/2 HYDRA-SHIFT (VS) with
newly developed tongs, the 51/2 incorporates the Hydra-Shift Tri-Grip Hydraulic Backup
technology, allowing the operator to shift from high speed to low

Model 5 1/2 Chromeboss
The Eckel 5-1/2 CHROMEBOSS * is the
premiere choice of equipment for running
chrome and stainless steel tubulars. Ca-
pable of withstanding rotational torques
well over 20,000 ft-lbs. Engineered from
the ground up specifically for Corrosion
Resistant Alloy (CRA) tubulars to elimi-
nate any die marking concerns. One of the
most outstanding features is the tong’s
ability to break-out tubulars with the same
non-marking aluminum dies used for make-
up which is an industry first. Notably
break-out operations do not require the
use of damaging tooth dies.

Top Drive Casing Tong

The Eckel Top Drive Casing Tong is a tool developed for use on
hydraulic top drive rigs to provide a high quality connection while
reducing tubular damage and providing a safer environment for
crews. With an operating capacity of 41/2 inch through 105/8 inch
O.D., is connected to the output stem of the power swivel. After
installation the tong becomes an integral part of the swivel,
raising and lowering as a unit and transferring the power swivel's
RPM and torque to the pipe/connection.
A guide attached beneath the top drive tong simplifies align-
ment of the collar within the tong. Once the collar of the pipe is
enclosed within the top drive tong, the tong will grip the collar by
operating the power swivel. Torque and rotational speed are
controlled through the operation of the power swivel. Reversal of
the power swivel will cause the tong jaws to release. Tong jaws
are spring loaded to retract away from the collar.
Utilizing three gripping jaws and a patented Eckel Cam Biting
System to grip the pipe collar. The same type of proven biting
system found in the industry leading Eckel Power Tongs. These
jaws are spaced evenly about the circumference of the collar to
provide even distribution of the gripping forces.

Equally important is Eckel's ability to customize power systems
in the shortest possible time to meet "non-standard" require-
ments for space, fluid-flow, auxiliary power, portability, etc.
Diesel driven units are supplied with automatic shut down
systems to prevent engine run away when explosive gasses are
present. Additional shut downs include engine oil temperature,
oil pressure, and fan belt breakage. All controls are either air DIESEL POWER UNIT
driven or mechanical.
Electric Power Units for hazardous locations are constructed
using electrical components that meet NFPA Class 1, Division
1, Group D explosion proof requirements. Both diesel and
electrical power units can be offered with extra capacity hydrau-
lic oil and fuel reservoirs.

Tong Dies
Tong dies have come a long way since tongs became commonplace in the oilfields. Eckel
has been at the forefront of this developing technology with the development of larger
wrap-around type dies for many of its tong models. We offer coarse tooth design and fine
tooth design depending on the application.
We recommend a coarse tooth wrap-around dies for regular carbon steel pipe and collars.
For special alloys such as 9, 13, 23, 25, chrome and fiberglass we recommend using our
fine-tooth design which will greatly minimize any marking of the tubulars.
We still offer our contour type dies for tubing sizes on many of our tongs which use pivot
heads that require them. Also for 4" OD and above the regular size dies are still used
extensively and we do still offer them. In addition to our contour dies, we provide A and
S series wrap-around dies for our 133/8 and 20" standard casing tongs, providing a larger
gripping area and reducing pipe damage.

Eckel Sliding head biting system utilizes our wide angle wrap-
around type dies and is considered the best choice of power tong
biting systems. This is especially true when working on drill pipe
tool joints O.D. surfaces which are subject to reductions in size
as they work downhole. The biting surface of each wrap-around
die is symmetrically spaced 180-degrees apart from each other at
all times. This insures equally distributed load on the tool joint.
This type of biting system provides a larger range of biting
coverage and allows for more teeth to come in contact with the tool
joint, preventing it from moving off center.
