PREPARATION OUTLINE
PERSUASIVE SPEECH
INTRODUCTION
I. They are sweet, they are sugary and they are designed to give you that all-important
pick-me-up when you’re running on empty. They can boost your energy for a while
when you need it. They are energy drinks.
A. A soft drink containing a high percentage of sugar, caffeine, or another
stimulant, typically consumed during or after sporting activity or as a way of
overcoming tiredness.
B. An energy drink is a type of drink containing sugar and stimulant compounds,
usually caffeine, which is marketed as providing mental and physical
stimulation .
II. According to research that I have made on this issue, researchers note that a moderate
intake of up to 400 mg per day for adults is considered safe.
A. The health implications can get serious when you start to take a lot of energy
drinks in a day.
B. Based on Caroline Blackmore, Nutritionist at Cinnamon Bridge the intense
sweetness of energy drinks causes blood sugar levels to spike, triggering the
pancreas to produce insulin. She added that at first, you’ll have a ‘high’ from
the sugar for about an hour, but afterwards you’ll feel a sudden drop in energy
after absorption, leaving you feeling even more tired and fatigued.
III. Most of the people think that energy drinks are good. It is good but become
dangerously bad when we ignore the effect of taking it a lot.
A. Energy drinks are bad because too many energy drinks can lead to severe
headaches from the caffeine withdrawal symptoms.
B. Although energy drinks are good at making us awake , but when abused, they
can cause some people to miss sleep altogether which are bad.
C. Besides that , health problem would be most likely the biggest problem that
we will have that caused by energy drinks.
IV. So today, I would like to persuade that energy drinks are not as healthy as we use to
know because they are not only give us energy, but as well as health problems.
(Transition: “What are the problem? Why can’t we drink a lot of energy drink ?”)
BODY
I. To all my audience, let me share some knowledge about the disadvantages of energy
drinks.
A. The caffeine content in energy drinks can be as high as 300 milligrams per
serving which can give us health problems.
1. They are actually addicted to the substance called caffeine , which are
the main ingredient for the energy drinks.
2. When we are addicted, this can lead to a lack of functioning when unable
to have the energy drink.
3. So what will happened next? The strong feeling of not getting what we
want will make us rage. We will not thinking straight and lose focus. In
the end, we will become stress and no process in doing the task given.
4. Addiction is a serious problem where it can make problems for our life.
For an example, a financial stress can occur from having to buy several
energy drinks daily because of the addiction toward energy drinks.
C. We as valuable and sane humans must not mix alcohol with energy drink
because the effect a very dangerous that can fully harm our body.
1. The alcohol slows down your heart rate, whilst the energy drink speeds
it up, creating an imbalance which causes your heart to go into
overdrive. This increases the risk of cardiac arrest.
2. Furthermore, the combination also means users do not feel the impact
of usual intoxication – which can lead to the increase in criminal offences
such as drink driving.
3. We will become a wide awake drunk. What is a wide awake drunk?
While alcohol works as a central nervous system depressant, slowing
down brain and motor activity, the caffeine and other ingredients in
energy drinks work as a stimulant. The stimulant effects of an energy
drink will counteract the sedative nature of alcohol, tricking users into
feeling more awake and less drunk than they really are. This effect is
referred by researchers as wide-awake drunk.
D. Other than that, women that plan to get pregnant must avoid taking energy
drinks.
2. Next , when consumed during pregnancy, caffeine can interfere with the
brain development of the fetus and thus cause lasting cognitive
impairment. It doesn’t help that being pregnant alters caffeine
metabolism in a way that increases caffeine’s half-life and,
consequently, increases fetal exposure. So its better for the women to
monitor their intake on caffeine before unexpected thing happen to
their baby.
E. Last but not least, energy drinks can affect children as well.
1. As for children , due to their small size, they have a lower safety
threshold for many of the ingredients in energy drinks. Their
immunity system are not as great as an adult because the different
between the consumption of an adult and a children are too great.
Thus, their immunity will be weak and will make them sick.
2. It has been recommended that kids limit their daily caffeine intake to be
less than 2.5 mg per kilogram of body weight based on Ruxton CH1,
from Nutrition Communications, Cupar, UK.
