To Verify the Law of Conservation of Energy of a Rolling

Disc on an Inclined Plane
(Height as a Function of Angle that Inclined Plane makes)

Apparatus
 Rolling Disc on Inclined Plane Apparatus
 Stop Watch
 Steel rule

Theory:
Law of conservation of energy:
Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; it only changes from one form to another.

For case of rolling disc on inclined plane, the following energies are involved:

1. Linear Kinetic Energy:

This energy is due to the linear motion of the disc and is given by,
Ke=1/2mv2
Where, m=mass of the body
v=linear velocity of the body

2. Rotational Kinetic Energy:

This energy is due to rotation of the disc and is given by,
Engineering Mechanics Lab 3
Kr=1/2Iw2
Where, I= moment of inertia of body =mr2 /2 (for rolling disc)
w=Angular velocity of body

3. Potential Energy:
This energy is due to height of the disc and is given by,
P.E. =mgh
Where, m=mass of body
g=gravitational acceleration (9.81m/s2)
h= height of body from datum

According to Law of conservation of energy,

Total energy=constant

Potential energy + Rotational kinetic energy +Linear kinetic energy= constant

For inclined plane, when disc moves from position 1 at height h1 to position 2 at height h2,

𝑻. 𝑬𝒊 =𝑻. 𝑬𝒇
𝑷𝑬𝒊 + (𝑲. 𝑬 + 𝑹. 𝑬)𝒊 = 𝑷𝑬𝒇 − (𝑲. 𝑬 + 𝑹. 𝑬)𝒇
At maximum height ‘𝒉𝒊 ’ – There will no others forms of energy other than Potential energy.

𝟏 𝑳 𝟏 𝒅𝜽𝒓 𝟐
𝒎𝒈𝒉𝒊 = 𝒎𝒈𝑳 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝜽° − ( 𝒎( )𝟐 + 𝑰( )
𝟐 𝑻 𝟐 𝒅𝒕

Procedure:

1. Place the apparatus on a horizontal surface.

2. Set the inclination angle of the inclined plane and define a datum position.
3. Allow the disc to roll freely down the inclined plane.
4. Note the time for the inclined disc to reach the end of the inclined plane.
5. Find linear and angular velocity and make further calculations.
