Instead of expecting presents on his birthday which fell last Tuesday, South Korean group
BigBang member Seungri chose to celebrate it by giving back to the country.

Through his Japanese ramen joint, Aori Ramen, the singer donated 100 million won to global
children welfare agency Child Fund Korea, to help children from poor families.

The donation will be used to provide basic necessities, such as rice, noodles and winter
clothing.

Seungri, along with 30 Aori Ramen employees and his father, Lee Yeon-jin took the trouble to
hand-deliver coal briquettes, which are compressed blocks of coal that are cheaper alternative
to firewood.

On one crisp autumn morning, when the dew was just rising from the fields,
dozens of children streamed into the two-room school in a small, poor village.
Their hair was freshly oiled. They used rice sacks tucked under their arms for
lack of chairs to sit on. One teacher showed up 90 minutes late. A second was a
no show. The most senior teacher, the only one with a teaching degree, was
believed to be on official government duty.

There are friends that you have polite chats with, and then there are your best
friends. They are the people who root for you, no matter what. You tell them your deepest,
darkest secrets and instead of heading for the door, they stick around 9 your bond with

My best friends and I get together 10 to share the deepest part of life, the part
that is about ‘being’ as opposed to ‘doing’. Sure, we speak about what we ‘do’ in our jobs,

Read the following page from a leaflet on how to make your own clock and answer
the questions that follow.

How to make your own clock

Step 1: Start with the base of your clock. Choose a rectangular piece of plywood that has
grains and a nice appeal. You can also use tiles or dinner plates.

Step 2: Note the thickness of what you are building onto — fabricate a spacer to fit between
the mechanism and the front of the clock.

Step 3: Assemble the clock hands per the instructions. It will take all of 60 seconds and it is
very easy, but the hands are fragile, so be gentle.

Step 4: Once assembled, it will look complete.

Step 5: (Optional) The metal hands can be cut to length with metal snips if you desire a
different look or if you need shorter hands to fit your project.

Step 6: Trim to length, also change the way the tip of each hand looks.

Step 7: When the finished clock is assembled, plug it in and test it out. Do not overtighten
the cap nut or otherwise, it will force the minute hand to move with each second, so loosen it
and it will be good to go. It is reliable as long as the electricity flows. Asymmetrical clock
happiness, everyone?

Rahman’s ‘DIY’ blog

Jan 12, 2018 – Tick Tock your own clock.

After months looking for a new clock for my room, I decided to make a clock on my
own so I could fit it exactly in the space and choose the design that I liked.

A rectangular piece of plywood with grains and a nice look became my choice for the

I cut the metal hands to have a different look and then fixed in the cap nut. Once I had

Questions 26 – 31 are based on the following passage.

1 It was approaching noon on December 21, 1943, in the Tanana River valley
of Alaska, not far from the Arctic Circle, and the five men on the Iceberg Inez were
preparing to crash. Minutes before, the crew of the B-24 bomber had been testing a
modified system on the plane’s four propellers when the plane seemed to stall,
sending it diving into a roller-coaster plunge. 5

2 The crash alarm bells rang like a fire drill as Crane yanked off his mittens to
secure his chute. And then, before he knew what was happening, he was in a free
fall. He felt for the ripcord. The chute poured out. He swayed beneath it and watched
the plane spin off before it slammed into a mountain slope and erupted in flames.
Crane himself landed into the powdery snow near the banks of a stream, two miles
away from his plane. The gas on board would keep the wreckage burning for a 10
while, which would be good for a rescue mission. But the fire also meant the
supplies on board were lost, almost certainly along with any other crew members
who might have survived the crash.

Still, Crane shouted out for the rest of the men. He listened for any hint of life.
3 Nothing. He was alone. Fortunately, he had a few provisions to keep him warm until 15
help arrived. He had the silk parachute, which he could use as a sleeping bag. His
flight suit was intact. He had on three pairs of wool socks under his heavy boots. He
also had his flight helmet and a pack of matches, as well as a knife. But he did not
have his mittens, which he had left on board in the rush to get his chute. Without
them, his unprotected fingers could become frostbitten within ten minutes. Hence, he

tucked his hands in his armpits.

It was minus-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Crane knew he needed to get a fire

going or he might not last the night, so he gathered driftwood. Although his fingers
4 were numb, he managed to strike a match. However, the little flame was not enough
to catch. Then he used the letter from his father he kept in his jacket to start the fire.
The fifth match worked, and a fire rose up. He let the fire thaw his fingers before 25
wrapping himself in the chute.

Crane was convinced that his best chance of survival was to explore
downstream. The water had to eventually drain into something, and there was a
5 chance of finding a trapper riding out the winter. It took hours to cover one mile
through the waist-deep snow and ice-coated rocks. Hunger gripped Crane with an 30
angry, clawing need. He had to find something to eat and at that moment he saw
squirrels. Crane broke off a branch and made a spear trying to kill a squirrel. Then
he took aim and threw but missed. Beaten, he spent the next three days wrapped in
his parachute in a kind of hibernation. With no food and fading hopes, Crane felt the
need to do something.

He decided the river was too much of an unknown, so on December 29, he
began hiking overland in search of civilization. In two hours, he had gone all of
roughly 300 feet. He left again the next morning, this time he walked atop the frozen
6 river until a log cabin came into view. He cleared away the snow and opened the
door.

The place was about ten feet wide, with a dirt floor and a low ceiling. There 40
was a tin of cocoa, one of dried milk, and a box of raisins. Crane stuffed the raisins
into his mouth. He lit a fire and filled a frying pan with snow, and soon he was
7 holding a tin cup of hot cocoa in both hands. Then he fell asleep in the bunk. When
he awoke, he set off downriver. All he saw was more wilderness. There was no
village as he expected. 45
At dawn on February 12, 1944, 53 days since the crash, he said goodbye to
the cabin that had saved his life. He managed only one mile in the first hour. For four
days he hiked on, his world whittled down to the act of a single step, then the next
step. On March 10, at first light, Crane stumbled upon a trail and followed it. It led
8 away from the river, then back toward the ice. There, on the other side of the river,
was a cabin. Then came barking. The sound of a dog. “Ho!” Crane yelled. “Anyone 50
there?” And for the first time in 81 days, someone answered to the lone survivor of
the crash of the Iceberg Inez.
