CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

This chapter presents The Problem and Its Background which consists of

Introduction, Theoretical Framework, Conceptual Framework, Scope and

Limitation of the study, Importance or Significance of The Study and Definition of

Terms.

Introduction

Low self-esteem is characterized by a lack of confidence and feeling badly

about oneself. People with low self-esteem often feel unlovable, awkward, or

incompetent. They have a fragile sense of self that can easily be wounded by

others.

And, also according to the psychologist Abraham Maslow, people are

motivated by certain basic needs, needs that build upon each other. Envision a tub

of blocks that you plan to use to build a model house. You can’t put on the roof

until there are walls under it, you must fulfil the bottom layers before working on

higher ones.

Low self-esteem can lessen the students’ desire to learn, their ability to

focus and their willingness to take risks. These factors might affect the student’s

social life as well. Because of the negativities that we have said earlier, students’

0
capacity of socializing with others will lessen because they have lower self-esteem,

it is because they are not trusting their selves to perform better. They often

perform nervously as if they were afraid of having a mistake. In this research, we

will be able to identify the needs of a student to enhance his own confidence and

to justify the possible cause of this behavior.

The respondent of the study are the students who encounter lack of

confidence in grade 11 humanities and social science 9.

Background of the Study

The researchers cooperate for this study for our readers to clearly

understand the possible cause of low self-esteem. It can also be a help to other

people who can’t fully understand the case of these students with this kind of

behavior. So according to psychologytoday.com, the first factor that contributes to

low self-esteem is the “disapproving authority figures”, it states about the

experience of oneself of hearing things that may offend them such as, “Whatever

you did wasn’t good enough.” Or other words of belittling, offending or degrading

that can make someone feel less valuable at what they did. The second factor is

being “uninvolved” or preoccupied caregivers. This factor is all about the lack of

attention a student receives from his or her family. This often occurs to families

with both working parents that made them so busy to give attention to their

1
children. Most students who happen to experience this kind of situation have a lot

of negative thoughts going on in their minds. They may have think and feel less

motivated due to lack of observance from their parents or guardians. Students

who can’t talk to someone they trust like their parents, guardians or older siblings

tend to have their way of expression to others be lessen resulting to low self-

esteem or lack of confidence to compose their selves to others. It is because the

primary consultants of these students should be someone who they lived with in

a home. So, if they can’t fully express their feelings or thoughts on these primary

listeners, there might be a hindrance to achieve a better performance with other

people they socialized with. The third factor is the “authority figures in conflict”,

this explains the personal problem a student experiencing in their homes, such as

having their parents fighting or showing negative actions that can cause a child be

threatened. So, if a student experiencing this kind of negativities consecutively,

the student might think that she caused it and may cause to disturb his or her

studies and furthermore, his self-esteem. Because if a student always suffer this

kind of situation in their home, they tend to feel low on themselves and feel lonely

to other students who have no family problems like them. According to Brad Henry,

“Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great

heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.”

2
According to this article, by means of family a student or a person can fully

achieve their dreams and served as a guide to their lives, so family is the reason

of every students.

Settings of the study

The study is conducted in Arellano University Andres Bonifacio-Pasig branch

which is located at Pag-asa Street Caniogan, Pasig.

The History of Pasig

According to Pasig City government, there are many legend tales and

theories explaining the origin of the name Pasig, however the most convincing

theory comes from the late Dr. Jose Vila Panganiban. A linguist, polyglot, professor

and former director of the institute of National Language. He said that “Pasig” is

an old Sankrit word referring to a River flowing from one body of water to another.

In the case of Pasig river from Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay.

Pasig is one of the oldest towns in the Philippines. The Augustians created

it in 1572. In June 1901, Act No. 137 of the Philippine Commission Incorporated

Pasig in the newly created Province of Rizal, it becomes the provincial capital of

Rizal until 1975 when the Metro Manila commission was created under Presidential

3
Decree No. 824 On 26 July 1994, the senate of the House of Representatives

enacted Republic Act 7829 converting the Municipality of Pasig into highly

Urbanized City.

History of Arellano University – Pasig

Imbued with an intense desire to builds the youth so as to become of

greater service to their country, President Florentino Cayco SR. (1892-1978)

founded ABHS in Pasig, a branch of Arellano University in July 1946. It’s first

director was Mrs.Lorenza O. De Jesus. The institution experienced significant

developments in all areas operation through the years with the continuous

turnover of administrators like Mr. Vincent Lavidez, Mrs. Fermina Kagahastian, Mr.

Isidro Figuracion, Atty. Alberto Maleta, Mrs. Priscala Melendres, Mrs. Eugenia

Banez, Mr. Ricardo Anonuevo, Mrs. Priscala Bustonera and Mrs. Minda Pabiona.

7
Theoretical Framework

According to Swan, W. B. Jr. (2011), self-verification proposes that people

prefer others to see them as they see themselves, even if their self-views happen

to be negative. The researchers’ understanding base on this statement referring

to the impact of lack in confidence in students, it says that if a student surrounds

by his or her classmates that have already an impression base on his poor

performance in school, or they witness his abilities of performing poorly because

of low self-esteem. In this case, the student tends to stay in this kind of situation

because people around him believes that he is like what he is for always. So, the

means of impact to the student may depend on how he will work on it. It’s either

the student will accept his defeat or he will strive to do more than what everyone

think he is already. Yes, for the researchers’ point of view it is a defeat if you let

your lack of confidence defines you as a person and let yourself know that you will

always be like that. Hopefully, this behavior is replaceable if a student is eager to

escape his known comfort zone. The comfort zone that the researcher’s talking

about is the comfort zone of the student in school to just stay quiet or stay inactive

whenever there are having school activities that require presenting in front just

like reporting, recitation, reading a book aloud, performing a singing or dancing

presentation, etc. Being a student who is experiencing this kind of situation must

outlook the positivity he would conquer if he will gain his confidence little by little.

It may be hard or not for some, but it would be a lot easier if this kind of student

8
surrounds with positive people that will lift him up, motivate him and help him to

do better with no harsh judgement but a nice construction of criticism.

Concept and Its Instruction

The respondents of the study are those students who are encountering

lack of confidence, the researcher is gathering information through interviewing

some students and searching some information in the internet.

The researchers make a questions or guide questions in order for the

respondents to answer, the question is based on the researcher’s statement of

the problem.

Statement of the Problem

The study is aiming to determine the impact of lack of confidence to

academic performance to academic performances of grade 11 humanities and

social science 9 student.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How does lack of self-confidence affect the academic performance of

HUMSS9 Student?

2. What should be students do to cope up with their lack of self-confidence?

3. Why does the students need to cope their lack of confidence?

12
4. What would be the effect to the students if they don’t cope up their lack

of self-confidence?

Significance of the Study

In this generation, many students were having lack of confidence or low

self-esteem. Lack of confidence may cause a lot of problems to a student, because

of fears in expressing their selves, they might have failing grades or even losing

an opportunity. In this study, the researchers aims to know what is the impact of

lack of confidence in the academic performances of a student from Grade 11

HUMSS 9 in Arellano University Pasig.

To Students. The significance of this study is to encourage every students

to cope up their low self-esteem and know how to build up their confidence

because, if they overcome this kind of situation, they can be able to face the other

people without fears by this they can also do anything they want and don't having

any regrets in their life. Build face and cheer up.

To Parents. On making this research, parents also have a benefit on this

study. They can help their children on this kind of situation by giving moral support,

so the students that have this kind of problem may not feel that they are lonely,

and parents can also help their children to overcome their fears and low self-

13
esteem by talking to them, like what the other people say "Parents is also a useful

tool to overcome your problems".

To Teachers. To aware the teachers that they can help their students to

boost up their self-confidence they should know that students are still in process

to face their fears and make that fears into a positive way. They can make students

perform well and build their confidence and make progress as well. They should

be aware that students are not weak. They're just being scared.

Scope and Delimitations

This study evaluates the impact of lack of confidence to the academic

performance of grade 11 HUMSS 9 students of Arellano University Andres

Bonifacio campus. The primary data gathering use is interview to determine the

impact of lack of confidence to the academic performance of grade 11 HUMSS 9

students.

The research data was based on the interview questionnaire that was

given to the respondents based on their experience in lack of confidence.

This study is limited only to afternoon shift Grade 11 HUMSS 9 students

and valid in year 2018-2019 base on the thesis adviser and its consultant for the

validation of the study.

14

Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents various literature and studies that are related to the

research topic which is the impact of lack of confidence to academic performance

of Grade 11 HUMSS 9 student.

Foreign Literature

It is important to discover what causes this in the respondents. If the they

can identify why they have lack confidence, the respondents can begin to take

steps to improve this area. Some of the causes of lack of self-confidence are fear

of criticism, self-doubt, inferiority feelings and feeling unlove.

Fear of criticism, the cause of fear of criticism is that if a person is too

concern about other’s opinions and feel insecure. Instead of taking critics as a

feedback, the respondent become defensive. What people think is a hypnosis

download that a person can use to let go of this fear. When the respondents care

too much on what the others think, that person are open to manipulation. When

they are care less on what the others think, they become more honest person

because they don’t have to pretend so much. When they have gotten over that

inferiority complex, they’ll just feel better about their self regardless of ‘the facts’.

17
This session will stop they on assuming that they are not as good as others

and help you accept your own areas of strength as well as weakness with

objectivity and calm.

Inferiority feelings are one of the causes of insecurity. Early experiences

play a big influence, like being ignored and ridiculed that create self-doubt and

also feelings of being unloved. These feelings of inferiority and hopelessness are

developed through various negative experiences especially when they were

growing up. If their parents were unable to provide a supportive environment and

they were critical, demanding and overprotective to them, then, they will develop

negative perceptions to their self. They can , therefore, overcome an inferiority

complex.

Lack of assertiveness, if they can’t express your needs and stand up for

their self, they become resentful and angry. Lack of assertiveness creates

insecurity, doubt and pessimism. When they learn to become assertive people will

realize that you know their mind and they will give them more respect and consider

that they are capable of more responsibility. They will be treated with more respect

and they will feel better about their self.

18
Perfectionism leads to having unrealistic expectations from other’s standard

and opinions. Thinking that they can’t do something unless is perfect is an

unrealistic way to approach everyday life. It is also a way of avoiding making

mistakes that create more insecurity.

Experiencing too much pressure from your parents or even friend to meet

the demands and expectations that they set out for you causes lack of self-

confidence. Setting unrealistic goals and fear of failure is another factor.

According to the article, it is important to discover what causes this in you.

If they can identify why they have lack of confidence, they can begin to take steps

to improve this area. Some of the causes of lack of self-confidence are fear of

criticism, self-doubt, inferiority feelings and feeling unloved. When you lack self-

confidence is because you are having unrealistic expectations from other’s

standard and opinions.

In 2011-2012, the number of international students increased 5.7%,

reaching a record high of 764,495 (Institute of International Education [IIE],

2012). According to IIE (2012), there were 309,342 international undergraduate

19
students, 300,430 international graduate students, and 69,566 international

students not seeking a degree, contributing 22 billion dollars annually to the United

States economy. Fischer (2011) writes that colleges and universities are increasing

their recruitment process while decreasing their admission criteria in order to

attract international students. In addition to the academic expense, international

students and their dependents spend over 14 billion dollars a year in goods and

services (IIE, 2012). Journal of International Students 331 2014 issue 4, Because

of the academic and economic contributions international students offer, American

higher education institutions are expected to maintain an aggressive recruitment

program (IIE, 2012). To stay internationally competitive in attracting international

students, colleges must adapt a multicultural approach to academics and campus

life in general. A guaranteed way to have a constant flow of international students

is to meet the needs of the students that are already here (Karuppan & Barari,

2010). The United States learning environments are unique compared to those of

other countries; consequently, international students are faced with new social

and academic conditions. Students experience stress and anxiety when faced with

community acceptance/comfort, language mastery, academic preparation, and

financial solvency issues.

This article analyzes these four issues that international students may face

when studying in the U.S., i.e., to determine if the four issues are sufficient to alter

20
the students’ confidence level in successfully completing their studies. While the

literature provided the basis for identifying each of the issues and how they affect

students’ confidence of success, this study provides insight on the impact of these

concerns on the current foreign student population.

According to the article, some students is facing problem in terms of

studying in international school because of high quality standards in terms of test

and performance in school.

Saileela K. (2012), is conducting “a study on self-regulation, self-efficacy

and attitude towards mathematics of higher secondary students in relation to

achievement”. The purpose of the study was to compare self-regulation scale, self-

efficacy scale and attitude towards mathematics scale in relation to achievement

test in mathematics. Investigator administered to a random sample of 1000 first

year higher secondary students. the result of the study reveals that there is self-

efficacy of girls is significantly greater than boys in mathematics and there is exists

positive and significant correlation between achievement and self-efficacy.

According to the article, some students is encountering lack of self-esteem

because of the hard subject (Math) in school.

21
Foreign Study

Social media has gained immense popularity in the last decade and its

power has left certain long-lasting effects on people. The upward comparisons

made using social networking sites have caused people to have lower self-

esteems. In order to test the hypothesis 150 students from institute of business

management were surveyed through questionnaires and interviews. This research

was limited to the students of IoBM and Facebook, being the most popular social

networking site was used as the representative of social media. Correlation and

regression model were applied to the data with the help of SPSS statistics to test

the relationship between social media and self-esteem. The major findings suggest

that approximately 88% people engage in making social comparisons on Facebook

and out of the 88%, 98% of the comparisons are upward social comparisons.

Further this research proves there that there is a strong relationship between social

media and self-esteem. Increase in social media usage causes the self-esteem of

individuals to decrease. One hour spent on Facebook daily results in a 5.574

decrease in the self-esteem score of an individual.

According to the study, social media affect not just the students but all of

the people, in terms of self-esteem or self-confidence.

22
Local Literature

According to Francisco D. D. (2018), self-esteem is the mirror that reflects

how people view themselves. They either see someone beautiful or someone ugly.

Low self-esteem in children may seem to be a normal trait or quality as we often

see shy, timid and unsociable learners sitting alone at the back of the classroom.

However, this should not be ignored especially by teachers since sociologists attest

to its many ill effects on children. When children regard themselves negatively,

they become unhappy, withdrawn and disconnected, thereby experimenting on

things that may lead to more serious problems such as drug dependency and

depression. However, the school can be a place where children can discover their

skills and capabilities given the right opportunities by the teacher. Teachers can

help students with low self-esteem by being generous with praises directed to

efforts exerted whether small or big. Allowing them to speak without interference

in spite of mistakes will also help as corrections may be done after. Teachers must

also be patient in explaining what and how the mistake was committed in a way

which tells them that it is normal to not meet others’ expectations from time to

time. Criticisms must be in the form of advice or suggestions so that they won’t

feel like being attacked or threatened for their imperfections. These youngsters

are fragile as glass and they need to be handled with caution and care by both

parents and teachers.

23
According to the article, self-esteem is the mirror that reflects how people

view themselves. They either see someone beautiful or someone ugly. Low self-

esteem in children may seem to be a normal trait or quality as we often see shy,

timid and unsociable learners sitting alone at the back of the classroom.

Student's self-esteem has a significant impact on almost everything she

does - on the way she engages in activities, deals with challenges, and interacts

with others. Self-esteem also can have a marked effect on academic performance.

Low self-esteem can lessen a student's desire to learn, her ability to focus, and

her willingness to take risks. Positive self-esteem, on the other hand, is one of the

building blocks of school success; it provides a firm foundation for learning.

The challenge in working with children with low self-esteem is to restore

their belief in themselves, so they persevere in the face of academic challenges.

You do not need a formal program to promote self-esteem, however. Educators

shape self-esteem every day, in the normal course of interacting with their

students.

24
Although you cannot teach a student to feel good about herself, you can

nurture her self-esteem through a continual process of encouragement and

support. At its most basic, that means showing appreciation for the things she

does well, expressing confidence that she will improve in the areas in which she

doesn't do well, and adapting instruction so she can experience success.

According to the article, student's self-esteem has a significant impact on

almost everything she does on the way she engages in activities, deals with

challenges, and interacts with others.

Local Study

The effect of extrovert and introvert students in academic performance

exists between a performance between a preference for either introversion or

extroversion and academic performance when compared between online and

traditional courses. This study attempted to determine if preferences for

introversion or extroversion is associated with academic performance as

determined by course grades between two separate group of students.

25
According to the study, the effect of extrovert and introvert students in

academic performance exists between a performance between a preference for

either introversion or extroversion and academic performance when compared

between online and traditional courses.

Synthesis

This chapter presented about the impact of lack of confidence to the

academic performance of grade 11 HUMSS 9 students. The collected data by the
