Despite of Indonesia is categorized as developing countries and faced some challenges that
need to be solved, Indonesia offers natural beauty which attract many foreigners and local
travelers to travel and explore in this attractive tourism destination. According to World
Travel Tourism Council, the direct contribution of travel and tourism sectors in Indonesia
was IDR 259,583 billion in 2017 (1.9% of GDP) which rose gradually over year since 2009
until today. Travel and tourism creates many jobs, drives exports and generates prosperity
across the world. As manager of one of travel agency in Indonesia that offer Labuan Bajo trip,
travel industry itself taught me many lessons about being open-minded person, boost my
emphatic and make me excited about life, yet it is becoming source of income for me, my
teams, my partners and local citizens in Labuan Bajo. After many travel experiences and run
the travel business, I found travel is a great opportunity to prosper local people and grow
economic in Indonesia, but tourism area needs to be developed and promoted extensively in
order to sustain in the future. As it can be seen, Indonesia with the big opportunity as a
country with its natural beauty that can attracts tourists still struggling to develop the
tourism destination equally in every areas. It is proved by only some areas in Indonesia that
well-known to visit, though many picturesque places where still need to be discovered and
transformed become tourist attractions. Graduated as economic bachelor may gave me
managerial and entrepreneurial skills. However, I acknowledge that I still need an
international exposure of the topic that could help to enrich my skills and knowledge in the
performance of my duties as manager in travel agency. I specifically hope to acquire Master
Degree in commerce tourism in Otago University, New Zealand as it applies to my current
profession because the best way to learn about the travel and tourism industry is by getting
out and experiencing in the country, where tourism is its largest export industry in terms of
foreign exchange earnings. Based on statistic that conducted in 2016, tourism industry in
New Zealand directly employs 7.5 per cent of the workforce and it has the potential to
improve the economies of communities around the country. Hoping to gain my knowledge
about how to balance environmental, economic, and socio-cultural benefits and concerns in
tourism. In particular, learning about tourist markets demands for nature and heritage
experiences, without compromising future generation access to these. Throughout the
program, getting insights into the complexities of tourism in relation to experiences, in how
tourism is performed and marketed enable a skill to analyze tourism in ways that give
nuanced understandings of sustainable tourism in a variety of settings that I can apply in my
current job to promote Indonesia tourism.
