Session 6

Look at the picture and the title. What do you think the text is about?

TV CSI versus the Real CSI

Construction workers are busy building a house. One of them
finds a body in the house- the victim is a young man with a piece
of cloth in his hand. Soon the CSI team is there. But which CSI
is it? Is it the group of handsome men and beautiful women from the television
programme or is it the real Crime Scene Investigation team?
Television’s crime scene investigators find evidence like fingerprints and hair at the
scene of the crime. Back at the laboratory, they use fantastic technology to examine the
evidence and their tests always succeed. In no time at all, they find enough clues to
arrest suspect. The programme has made forensic science look very exciting. Some
universities in the USA say huge numbers of students have started taking forensic
science courses since the TV programme became popular.
But how much of what you see on the TV screen is true? Well, the real CSI investigators
aren’t always elegant and beautiful. They are really just ordinary people doing a job.
Most investigations are about burglaries. On TV, the CSI investigators solve murder
cases all the time. In real life, the technology doesn’t always work and solving a crime is
simply hard work. The CSI investigators on television usually solve the crime. But in
real life, this doesn’t always happen. So you see, being a CSI investigator isn’t as
attractive as it seems on TV.

Answer the questions

1. What crime has the construction worker discovered?

2. What evidence is there at the house?
3. What other evidence can CSI investigators collect?
4. What do TV’s CSI investigators do with the evidence they collect?
5. What courses at US universities have become popular because of the TV
programme CSI?

Which sentences refer to the real CSI?

The men are all handsome / They usually investigate burglaries / They are ordinary
people / Their technology is fantastic / At the end, they always solve the crimes.

Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th
century. A British author and physician, Arthur Conan Doyle, created
this detective famous for his skill at using logic and careful observation
to solve cases.

People believe that Holmes have lived at 221B Baker Street, London,
where he spent many of his professional years with his friend and
colleague Dr. Watson.

Sherlock Holmes describes himself as a "consulting detective", which

means that he has solved cases that have proved too difficult for other
investigators. He is often able to solve a problem without leaving home and specializes in solving
unusual cases using his extraordinary powers of observation and "deduction".

A teacher at the medical school of Edinburgh University has inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
(the gifted surgeon and forensic detective Joseph Bell).

It is a popular myth that Sherlock Holmes has given rise to the entire genre of murder mystery fiction; in
reality, the detective genre was alive before Holmes. Many fictional detectives have imitated Holmes'
logical methods and followed in his steps, in many different ways. Some of the more popular fictional
detectives that have continued Holmes' legacy include Agatha Christie's Hercules Poirot, Perry Mason,
Colombo, Dick Tracy, and even the comic book superhero Batman. Holmes has also inspired series on
TV like Law and Order and the USA Networks show Monk. Monk has even imitated the Holmesian style
of "quiet analysis", during which no one speaks to the character while he works. Also, Monk has an
older brother, who, like Holmes, is a bit more able but less interested in crime.

Read the text and answer the questions:

When did Sir Arthur create Sherlock Holmes?

Which types of crimes does Sherlock Holmes solve?

Were Sherlock Holmes’ series the first in the fictional detective genre?

Does Holmes like speaking while he works?

Has Holmes inspired comics on superheroes? Which ones?
