This task is to be completed individually. Please feel free to

share ideas and collaborate, but the end product should be your
own work and ideas.

This task is designed to give you an opportunity to demonstrate

your evaluation of the importance of reconciling nationalist and
non-nationalist loyalties.

Your assignment will consist of:

1. Three examples of non-nationalist loyalties conflicting
with national loyalties.​ These examples should each involve
different non-national loyalties as the ​primary ​focus.
These examples should also be different than the examples
discussed in the textbook, although other examples that
have been discussed are available. Each of your examples
should include the following
a. A brief explanation of which loyalties are conflicting
and, and why. ​This does not need to be extensive, but
should include what sort of loyalty is at stake (ex.
ideological loyalty), to what specifically the loyalty
is to (ex. socialism), and a couple sentences
explaining the conflict.
b. An description of how these conflicting loyalties have
been reconciled. ​The type of reconciliations in your
examples should be different from each other, and
across your three examples, you need to demonstrate ​at
least two different categories ​of reconciliation
(living with conflicting loyalties, choosing one
loyalty, bringing about change in your nation).
c. A reasoned evaluation of how important you think it is
to reconcile these loyalties. ​This should be your own
 thoughts, and judgement. This section should include
some possible consequences of attempting
reconciliation, or not reconciling, your judgement on
how important it is, and an explanation of why.
2. One example of a non-nationalist loyalty that you have that
conflicts with a national loyalty you have, your evaluation
of how important it is to reconcile these loyalties, and
what way you in which you would. ​This should include an
explanation of loyalties and reason for conflict, followed
by your reasoned evaluation of how important it is to
reconcile these loyalties, and how you are reconciling it,
or would like to in the future.

Teacher check-in: ​When you have found all of your examples you
are interested in that demonstrate different competing
non-national loyalties, and two different ways that groups or
individuals have reconciled them, please bring them to me so I
can make sure you are on the right track.

Format: ​For this task, you are welcome to present your

information in whatever way you would like to as long as you can
convey the information required above. This could include
written paragraphs, a mini-poster, a recording of you explaining
your information, as just a couple of ideas. ​Please use full
sentences​. If you are unsure of a potential format, or it is not
listed above, please ask!
