(1) Find: (a) the mean free path, and (b) the collision frequency for molecules in air at 350
K and 1 atm.
Take the diameter of a molecule of air to be 0.3 nm.

(2) A Carnot engine operates between 300 C and 30 C. In one cycle it absorbs 1500 J from
the hot reservoir. (a) What is the work done per cycle? (b) What would be its coefficient
of performance if it were run as a heat pump?

(3) What is the change in entropy in each of the following processes: (a) 1 kg of water
o o o
at 100 C changes to steam at 100 C and at constant pressure; (b) 1 kg of ice at 0 C is
o o o
converted to water at 0 C; (c) 1 kg of water at 0 C is heated to 100 C.

(4) A duct of square cross section (0.5 m × 0.5 m) is used to change the air in a room
of dimensions 4 m × 3 m × 3 m every 20 min. What is the required speed of the airflow
through the duct?

(5) A 50m/s wind blows past a roof of dimensions 12 m × 17 m. Assuming that the air
under the roof is at rest, what is the net force on the roof?
The density of air is 1.2 kg/m3 .

(6) A spherical drop of mercury has radius 2 × 10−3 m. Calculate the amount of work
required to break it into 2 million droplets of equal size.
The surface tension of mercury is 550 × 10−3 N/m.
