ALGAE FOR ANIMAL FEED

WHAT IS ALGAE?
**Aquatic organisms that have the ability to conduct photosynthesis
**Exist as single, microscopic cells; they can be macroscopic and
multicellular; and rich in protein
**Algae as animal feed ensures better quality eggs, milk and possibly meat,
and that it boosts growth in piglets, chickens and lambs & others
**By 2020, the global feed market will need to produce more than 220
million tons of protein. And microalgae contains a lot of protein, between
20 to 70%. Compare this to 10% protein in corn and 40% protein in
soybeans. Microalgae are also a good source for lipids and carbohydrates.

WHY ALGAE AS ANIMAL FEED?

1. Algae is single cell proteins, so

they should be easily digestible
than soybeans or conventional
proteins
2. Micro-algae also represent a
valuable source of nearly all
essential vitamins (e.g. A, B1,
B2, B6, B12, C, E, nicotinate,
biotin, folic acid and
pantothenic acid).

IMPORTANCE OF ALGAE AS ANIMAL FEED

Algae oil offers more

nutritional value in
comparison with grain feed
as it contains omega-3,
which is leading to the
continuous demand in
animal feed sector.

Algae can be used in integrated livestock management in manure ponds

for growing fish and removing of nutrients, thereby serving the feed
requirement and avoiding use of fish meal.

Micro-alga also used for enriching yolk color such as Haematococcus

pluvialis. Astaxanthin can replace artificial colorants and also improve
poultry health and other egg properties. Astaxanthin has been shown
- to reduce chick mortality by 50 percent
- to reduce Vibrio spp. infections in eggs
- improving the nutritional value of eggs
- meat texture and taste
Chlorella vulgaris, another algae is rich in lutein and can also be used a
feed supplement to improve yolk properties.

In the animal feed industry, if microalgae replaced 20 to 50 percent of

the soybean meal fed to swine, broilers and layers each year it would
save 4.4 to 11 million tons of soybean meal that could be used for human
consumption
