The fundamental principles of good seamanship are
unchanging, whatever new technology is introduced. In
this book, there is much that will be of relevance to both
merchant and naval training colleges, as well as all those
in pursuit of STCW qualifications, covering new advances
in safety equipment and procedures in survival. Closely
aligned with the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency
(MCA) examination syllabuses, and used by the MCA as a standard reference, The Admiralty
Manual of Seamanship is an essential addition to any ship bridge library.

The author
The current author of The Admiralty Manual of Seamanship is Vic Vance, a retired Royal Navy
Warrant Officer Seaman Specialist.
Mr Vance was educated at Hundred of Hoo Secondary School near Rochester in Kent in
the UK and entered the Royal Navy as a Junior Seaman in 1965. He served in a variety of
ships from Antarctic Survey to frontline Frigates and Destroyers with three years as the
Hong Kong Patrol Squadron Seamanship Officer. On promotion to Warrant Officer Seaman
Specialist, Mr Vance became part of the Flag Officer Surface Flotilla Staff where he was
responsible for Seamanship procedural policy making and ship inspections for all surface
ships of the Royal Navy; he retired from uniformed service in 1999.
On retirement Mr Vance joined the Civil Service as a Warship Support Agency Desk Officer
and focal point for replenishment at sea equipment and general seamanship. In 2004 Mr
Vance was promoted and took up the appointment of the Royal Navy’s Fleet Staff Author
for The Admiralty Manual of Seamanship, the Royal Marines Landing Craft and Small Craft
Operations manuals, The Naval Handbook for Sailmakers and The Naval Handbook for Survivors.
The latter two publications are also published in collaboration with The Nautical Institute.
