Godse and Gandhi

Tracing Gandhi’s assassination trial scene, Godse made his last statement on 5 th May
1949 which was released to the public on -------. At a first reading one would consider
Godse as a hero or people as there are hidden facts behind the complaint he made against
Gandhi. Godse strongly felt Gandhi was pro-muslim and that he did many things to
appease them.

Godse, a believer of Gandhi, actively participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement

along with Bapu. The main twist happened in 1937 when Communalism was at its peak
and there was no concept of Nationalism. From August 16, 1946, communal riots started
in India between India and Pakistan. Jinnah wanted partition to happen and said, “If not a
divided India, then a destroyed India. August 14, 1947- partition happened.

Nathuram Godse, editor of Agrani, in his last editorial said “Gandhi should be stopped at
any cost” and justified that Gandhi’s assassination must have happened long ago and that
was a delayed action.

Though Godse in his statement said that he had decided to kill Gandhi on 13th January
1948, he had made attempts even earlier in July 1944 and again in September that year.
He also said that Gandhi’s fast-unto-death was the main reason that provoked him to
assassinate Gandhi. People who didn’t have any knowledge of history, would believe
whatever was said against Gandhi and become anti-Gandhi. But this was not true. Gandhi
went on a fast-unto-death mainly on two conditions-one was to fund Rs.55 crores to
Pakistan and the second

The defeat of the All India Muslim League in the 1937 elections led to communal riots.
The 1942 Quit India movement made Jinnah remind Britishers on their obligations
towards Muslims.

Examining the partition part, Veer Savarkar initiated this concept in 1923. Veer Savarkar
addressed in 1937 "India cannot be assumed today to be Unitarian and homogenous
nation, but on the contrary there are two nations in the main - the Hindus and the
Muslims." In 1945, he had stated "I have no quarrel with Mr. Jinnah's two nation theory.
We, the Hindus are a nation by ourselves, and it is a historical fact that the Hindus and
the Muslims are two nations." Godse’s perspective on Gandhi being the root-cause of the
partition is a false statement.

Contrary to the fast-unto-death reason he gave for killing Gandhi. Anyone who lacks
knowledge would believe it. The first condition was to fund Pakistan 55 crores. The
pre----- agreement by British stated that we have to fund 75 crores out of which 20 crores
were given. So, Gandhi didn’t want to break the law. Hence, he imposed that condition.
The other was the Hindu refugees sent out of Delhi places including --------The fast was
basically to prevent communal riots and create unity between Hindus ands Muslims. He
wanted Hindus to calm down so that he can go for further talks to Pakistan but that didn’t
happen.
