CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION:

Social media has played an important role in today’s life. It is a platform

for people to interact, discuss and give their opinion towards a certain topic ,

but lately, the freedom of giving one’s opinion is making the issue bigger

between the pros and cons of the topic being discussed.

Social media is created in-order to easily communicate and to interact

with people, for us to socialized but, ironically, social media is in effect turning

us into one of the most antisocial generations, yet, we prefer texting to phone

conversation, online chat to face-to-face meeting, and many have replaced

human interaction with convenient platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and

Instagram.

Jonathan Safran Foer in his article “How not to be alone”, said “Each

step forward in social media has made it easier, just a little, to avoid the

emotional work of being present to convey information rather than humanity.

“With each passing day, these words ring truer and truer.

In this research we will show how social media affects the daily routine

of people and the good and bad effects of using it.

BACKGROUND

Ever since the launching of the Facebook app on February 4, 2004 it has

been the start of the continuous launching of different technologies that makes

the people more curious on how these things work. And as the time flies, more

people are getting engrossed in online activities which results to more and

more creation of these social media apps.

Social media functions in so many ways, like for example, the different

companies advertising their products, the online sell and buying, the easy, one-

click searching of students for their assignments and projects, the spreading of

news and newly discovered crimes all over the world that warns us beforehand.

In addition, social networking sites are used to spread information faster than

traditional news outlet or any other form of media. But because of these, the

online community becomes more complex that it creates bad effects that

harms the users of the different social media apps.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers aim to identify the good and bad effects of social media

addiction inside the school or in the community, especially on students.

This study seeks to be well informed and to answer the following research

questions:

I – What are the most popular social media networking sites according to the

respondents?

II – what are the common problems that respondents encounter in social

media?

A. Who the problem affects?

III – What are the good and bad effects of Social Media?

OBJECTIVES

To list information that will help the readers to understand furthermore of

the good and bad effects of social media addiction and how to stop it for

continuous spreading.

HYPOTHESIS

The percentage of bad effects of addiction to social media is higher than

the good effects of it.

THE SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The purpose of these research is to know the good and bad effects of

social media addiction to social media users. This study scopes even to those

who already has a job, e. g. working moms and dads, newly graduated

teenagers, etc. To further know how they managed to use the social media

apps despite the hectic schedule and to know who uses social media apps

more? The students or the adults?

DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terminologies are used in the research:

Social Media – any form of electronic communication which people create

online communities to share information, ideas, personal message, etc. usually

with the use of internet.

Netizens – A person who actively uses internet or social media often

called cybercitizen.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEWS OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

INTRODUCTION:

This chapter presents a review of related literature both foreign and local .

This also presents the different variables relative to the study.

FOREIGN LITERATURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

The use of social networking sites has been very accessible to different

organizations, through the websites that they put up, they can easily inform the

public about their products and services in a more efficient way, because of

this social media has been a very powerful tool to communicate , spread and

trade informations as well as products around the globe.

Barnes (1954) indicates that Social Network Theory views social

relationship in terms of nodes and ties. Social Network is a social structure made

up of individuals (or organizations) called “nodes”, which are tied (connected)

by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship of beliefs,

knowledge or prestige.
According to Abhyankar (2011), “Social Network” is an online community

where people across the globe (irrespective of demographic and

geographical differences) can develop network with different organizations or

individuals for a specific purpose. It creates a chain of linked/connected

entities (individuals/organization, communities, forums, groups etc.) like a tree

with multiple branches and nodes. These branches are the various groups,

communities, forums etc. that an individual intends to join. Hence, a social

network represents relationships between nodes (people) and flows between

the branches (groups, communities, forums, organizations etc.)

A social networking service is an online service, platform, or site that

focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among

people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities. A social network

service consists of a representation of each user (often a profile), his/her social

links, and a variety of additional services. Most social network services are web-

based and provide means for user to interact over the Internet, such as e-mail

and instant messaging. Online community services are sometimes considered

as a social network service, though in a broader sense, social network service

usually means an individual-centered service whereas online community

services are group-centered. Social networking sites allow users to share ideas,
activities, events, and interests within their individual networks.

LOCAL LITERATURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

What is Social Media?

Social media are computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the

creation and sharing of informations, ideas, career interests and other forms of

expressions via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-alone

and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of

definition; however, there are some common features.

1. Social media are interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications

2. User-generated content, such as text posts and comments, digital

photos or videos, and data generated through all online interactions , is
the lifeblood of social media.

3. Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are
designed and maintained by the social media organization.

4. Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by

connecting a user’s profile with those of other individuals or groups
Users typically access social media services via web-based technologies

on desktop, computers, and laptops, or download services that offer social

media functionality to their mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablet

computers). When engaging with these services, users can create highly

interactive platforms through which individuals, communities and organizations

can share, co-create, discuss, and modify user-generated content or pre-

made content posted online. They introduce substantial and pervasive

changes to communication between businesses, organizations, communities

and individuals. Social media changes the way individuals and large

organizations communicate. These changes are the focus of the emerging

fields of techno self-studies. Social media differ from paper-based media (e.g.,

magazines and newspaper) or traditional electronic media such as TV

broadcasting in many ways, including quality, reach, frequency, interactivity,

usability, immediacy, and permanence. Social media outlets operate in a

dialogic transmission system (many sources to many receivers). This is in contrast

to traditional media which operates under a monologic transmission model

(one source to many receivers), such as a paper newspaper which is delivered

to many subscribers, or a radio station which broadcasts the same programs to

an entire city. Some of the most popular social media websites are Baidu Tieba,

Facebook (and its associated Facebook Messenger), Grab, Google+,

MySpace, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Tumblr, Twitter, Viber, VK, WeChat,

Weibo, WhatsApp, Wikia, Snapchat and Youtube. These social media websites

have more that 100,000,000 registered users.

(Wikipedia, 2017)

Forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social

networking and microblogging) through which users create online

communities to share informations, ideas, personal messages, and other

content (such as videos).

(Merriam, 2017)

Primarily internet or cellular phone based applications and tools to share

informations among people. Social media includes popular networking

websites, like Facebook and Twitter; as well as bookmarking sites like Reddit. It

involves blogging and forums and any aspect of an interactive presence

which allows individuals the ability to engage in conversations with one

another, often as a discussion over a particular blog post, news article, or event.

(Business Dictionary, 2017)

EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL PLATFORMS

 FACEBOOK – is social media’s mass market.

As the data shows, almost every marketer is on FACEBOOK. It’s the dominant

site globally according to the Global Web Index. FACEBOOK has focused on

video. Not only is video hot this year, but also it provides higher advertising

revenues.

 TWITTER – is social media’s broadcast system.

TWITTER provides real time reach to get your message out but tweets have

very short lifespans. TWITTER works best when you don’t limit your participation

to self-promotion.

 LINKED – provides professional connections that result in lead

generation and drive sales.

As a business, position your internal corporate thought leaders using a

combination of business pages, employee profiles and linked in publishing.

 GOOGLE+ - keeps marketers’ attention.

Marketers have kept GOOGLE+ in their social media mix due to the close

association with the search engine.

 YOUTUBE – remains video’s home.

While other video options continue to expand. Youtube is a must in every

marketer’s mix. It’s not just a video platform. It’s the second biggest search

engine.

 PINTEREST – keeps marketers’ attention.

PINTEREST is where customers find inspiration for shopping and their lives. It’s a

pre-purchase indicator. It also rocks for content distribution.

 INSTAGRAM – is social medias’ photo album.

You only need a few images to pull your prospects into your product. Also

INSTAGRAM is a mobile app that’s owned by FACEBOOK.

 SLIDESHARE – is the professional lead magnet.

Bussiness make real money from SLIDESHARE. Many would prefer that you not

know this because the more people that use it, the less effective it becomes.

 FORUMS – the grand-daddy of social media, still thrive.

While not eveyone’s cup of tea, forums tend to have a dedicated focus and

loyal following.

 BAIDU TIEBA – is the largest Chinese communication platform.

It is an online community bound tightly with internet search services , one of

the main business of BAIDU.

WHY DO WE NEED TO USE SOCIAL MEDIA?

 To stay in touch with what friends are doing.

 To stay up-to-date with news and current events.
 To fill up spare time.
 To find funny or entertaining content.
 To share opinions.
 To share photos or videos with others.
 To share details of our everyday life.

FOREIGN STUDIES

For many young people, online social networking is not a distinct

activity, but is part of day-to-day life, communication and interaction with

peers. This can lead to some ‘risks’ crossing over into, and potentially being

amplified by, SNS. Both young people and youth workers identify bullying on

SNS as one of the most significant negative issues linked to online social

networking (Davies and Cranston,2008).

Moreover, Davies and Cranston (2008) said that group and

communication tools on social networking site can provide ways to keep

young people in touch with services and with each other, to build bridges

between face-to-face sessions. Social network sites can provide a platform for

sharing young people’s creative efforts, or for enabling young people to have

public voice on issues that affects them. Online social networking also offers

the potential for new forms of online outreach work or for working with groups

with shared interest from across a wide geographical area.

SYNTHESIS AND RELEVANCE OF THE REVIED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Social networking sites are very complex nowadays. It has been a great

influence to people who uses it, especially for businesses and transactions .

Many sites are created to furthermore be useful to everyone. Social

media has been the new form of communication to bridge the gap between

groups of people. But because of the continuous evolution of technology,

more and more sites are being created that makes for work easier.

On the other hand, there are still bad effects of these sites like for

example the addiction of teens and youngster in using social media.
