CHAPTER I

The Problem

Introduction

Green is the color of life. Every year the Youth for Environment in

Schools Organization (YES-O) continuously create and form a strong interest

including activities in which its aim and objective is protecting and preserving

the planet’s resources. It is embodied that the students in schools have always

been rally and maintains the youth participation and action to protect,

preserve, conserve, and reform our environment. It stands for nature, health,

growth, harmony and freshness. And it is the hue of youth the most peaceful

for the human eye.

The Department of Education (DepEd) order No. 72, series of 2003,

demonstrating YES-O as the co-curricular environmental club or organization

in schools. It is unique all other environmental ecology clubs or organization in

schools with greatest and primary programs or projects to implement for the

environment. YES-O encourages and trains diverse youth to influence

environmental conclusion through community action projects and campaigns;

skills training in leadership, environmental education, civic engagement, and

community organizing, and knowledge that nourished our communities and

future.
2

The increasing interests in Youth for Environment in Schools

Organization (YES-O) has heightened the need for students which the

environment is a major concern to awake the awareness and initiative of the

people to improve and help the threat further damage for the environment. This

is one of the aims of this research. It assesses the current situation and

implementation of the YES-O organization of Alberto Olarte Sr. National High

School and to recommend possible and achievable solutions.

Statement of the Problem

This study explored to determine the implementation of youth for

environment in school organization (YES-O) and its importance in promoting

clean and green environment during the School Year 2018-2019, in the School

of Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School.

Specifically, it answered the following question:

1.) What is the profile of the selected students according to:

a.) Age

b.) Gender

c.) Grade Level

2.) What is the level of practice of the YES-O implementation?

a.) Highly Practiced

3

b.) Fairly Practiced

c.) Practiced

d.) Not Practiced

e.) Fairly Practiced

f.) Highly Not Practiced

3.) What are the programs implemented by the school out from the DepEd

order No. 72, s. 2003?

Significance of the Study

The finding of the study is essential and beneficial to the following:

The public school YES-O could provide opportunities for them to develop

and improve their organization in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School to

implement some rules and regulations to discipline the students in terms of

their waste on how they properly dispose into the garbage bin. By that, we

lessen the one of the issues in our country and especially in our school.

Results of the study would also provide the school administrators

insights and possible solutions to the implementation of youth for environment

in school organization (YES-O) and its importance in promoting clean and

green environment in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School. They may plan

or make program of activities in improving the weaknesses of these

organization through the proposed plan enhancement.

4

Additionally, the results of the study are valuable reference for future

researchers as they will be provided with information relevant to the present

research.

School. This research would really help the school to improve the

beautification and cleanliness of the surroundings of the school to become

attractive and admirable to the eye of the visitors and to get them inspire.

Student. This study would help the student to become aware on how

they segregate properly the waste disposal. As a student you will be the one a

good example to your co-student in your school, and you must also know your

responsibility and limitations to our environment to be able still safe, protected,

and preserve our environment.

Challenges. The YES-O programme encountered challenges such as

absence of clearly define exit strategy duplications of duties and the inability of

members to acquire relevant useful skills.

Experienced. The Youth for Environment in Schools (YES) Organization

experience and undertaking a lot of activities and projects, such as clean up

drive inside and surrounding the school premises, waste management,

segregation, recycling program and many more.

Delimitation of the Study

The study was delimited to the implementation of youth for environment

in school organization (YES-O) and its importance in promoting clean and

5

green environment. The research utilized the combination of qualitative and

quantitative study. Qualitative research is a scientific methodand narrative

analysis to gather non-numerical data. Moreover, qualitative is dealing with

understanding the human behaviour (Sanchez, 2003).While quantitative form

is the systematic empirical investigation of observable phenomena via

statistical, mathematical, or computational.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

This section presents the review of related literature which is very useful in the

study.

Relative to the holding of the 2003 Youth for Environment Summer (YES)

Camp last April 30- May 4, 2003, one of the concrete resolutions and actions

adopted by the entire delegation from all over the country is the establishment

of a school-based co-curricular organization which will serve as a significant

venue for student’s actions and movements toward safeguarding, protecting

and conserving the environment for the future generations. In regard, the

Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with the Department of

Environment Natural Resources (DENR), establishes the Youth for

Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) as the recognized co-curricular

environmental club or organization in the schools and consolidates all other

environmental and/or ecology club or organizations in school with main and

primary programs or projects for the environment or ecology in the said

organization.

The Youth for Environment in Schools (YES) Organization shall have a

following objective: (1) Be aware and create awareness in others of the state of
7

the Philippine environment and ecology, including prevailing issues and

concerns relative thereto; (2) Establish specific and doable programs, projects

and activities to address issues andon the environment and ecology; (3)

Network with other government and non-government organizations, including

youth for environment in schools (YES) organizations in other schools within

the Division and Region, with regard to support and assistance to programs,

projects and activities of organization; (4) Encourage community participation

and initiative in environment and ecological movements and actions; and(5)

Develop among members and the community proper environmental values,

skills and attitudes.

Additionally, the following programs, projects and activities may for part

of regular undertaking of the youth for environment in schools (YES)

organization.(a) Clean-up drive inside and surrounding school premises,

including public and common areas in the community(b) Waste management,

segregation and recycling program(c) Awareness campaign to address specific

issues such as pollution, sanitation and health(d) Symposia/training (e)

Nursery establishment and tree planting activities(f) Fun run for the

environment (g) Youth for environment summer camp.

Waste Management

Solid waste management is the one thing that every city government give

action to its dweller. Solid waste management is arguably the usual important

municipal service and serves as a prerequisite for other municipal action. As

the world chase toward its urban future, the quantity of municipal solid waste

(MSW), one of the usual important by-products of an urban life, is raise even

faster than the rate of urbanization (Hoornweg & Bhada-Tata, 2012).

An increasingly happen figure of raising funds in the non-profit sector is

the special happening that includes some figure of physical activity. To look

into the phenomenon of physical activity events, there function as a solicitation

strategy and as a public awareness and to gauze how these events met the

necessarily participants who contribute their money and energy to a reason.

Using a social marketing framework and diffusion of innovations theory as an

approach to making sense of the data, the result suggest that events serve two

main purposes; (a) Celebrating a cause of offering an event that satisfies the

physical activity interest of participants, and that events appropriately act as

fundraising and publicity tools. (b) Implications for adopting a social marketing

orientation so that non-profit organization can hasten the diffusion process

tailoring events to meet the needs of participants, and for further research are

discussed (Higgins, 2003).

Recycling Materials
9

Air, Land, and Water Pollution

Pollution is the most usually used word in our everyday life relating to

the destruction of the natural air we breathe, the water we drink and the land

we live on. Pollution can be defined as the unwanted and unintended

contamination of the environment by human activities. The results of pollution

can be experienced in unusual ways, and the most common ways of pollution

are air, water, and land pollutions(Essays, UK., 2018).

Additionally, the major social concern appears in 1970’s turn around the

ecological balance within the environment. Problems of water and air pollution,

solid waste, overpopulation and other figure of residue from industrialization

and humanity seem to be concerning big numbers of American. The basis of

objective of this study were to interrogates the response of consumers to an

advertising campaign for a gasoline that promise reduce air pollution to reveal

some of the marketing associates of attitudes forward air pollution. A massive

promotional campaign headlined the news of scientific improvement of the new

thing that affirms to reduce air pollution by significant percentages (Kassarjian,

1971).However, tree planting and plantation forestry in tropical countries are

fast enlarged. Tree planting inhibit soil erosion and the use of agroforestry, as

well as many industrial afforestation projects are all part of the reaction to

tropical deforestation and are great too much rural development. The

International Tropical Forest Action Programme (TFAP) upgrades these many

roles for tree planting in the wider development context (Evans, 1992).

CHAPTER III

Methodology

This chapter presents the research methodology of the study. The

presentation includes the description of theresearch design, research locale,

participants, research instruments, and data gathering procedure.

The research utilized the mixed method research employing the narrative

and numerical analysis in discovering and analysing the implementation of

youth for environment in school organization (YES-O) and its importance in

promoting clean and green environment.

Research Design

The research design used in this study is mixed method. It is qualitative

because it involves a qualitative description on the implementation of youth for

environment in school organization and its importance in promoting clean and

green environment. The research employed various mixed methods to gather

data and establish the prevailing situation.

Additionally, Creswell (2002) noted that qualitative research is the

approach to data collection, analysis and report writing differing from the

traditional. Qualitative research approaches are employed across many

academic disciplines such as meaning, concepts, definitions, characteristics,

symbols, and description of the things and not to their counts and measures,
11

and focusing particularly on the human elements of the social and natural

sciences.

On the other hand, quantitative research is the approach of numerical

data gathering. Williams (2007) stated on his Journal of Business and

Economic Research, quantitative research emerged around 1250 A.D. and was

driven by investigators with the need to quantify data. Quantitative research

can be used in response to relational questions of variables within the

research.

Research Locale

This study will be conducted in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School,

located at Barangay Mabila Municipality of Sarangani Davao occidental in the

school year 2018-2019.

Specially, the researchers studied the implementation of youth for

environment in school organization (YES-O) and its importance in promoting

clean and green environment in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School that

contains a mandate for the Department of Education- Centre for students and

Co-curricular Affairs to lead the pupils and student’s environmental programs,

projects, activities and advocacies in schools, and to formulate, design and

develop various forms in connection with the application, registration,

establishment, assessment, monitoring and evaluation of the Youth for

Environment in Schools Organization (YES-O) in public schools. Hence, the

12

DepEd issues the Mandated Programs, Projects, and Activities, various Forms

and Target pertinent to the Youth for Environment in Schools (YES) Program.

Participants

The participants involve of this research will be the Coordinator and the

randomly grade level selected members from YES organization. The researchers

essentially need the participants to validate this research. By the help of

cooperation of the participants, the researchers come up a data to help the

researchers answer the following question that already presented on the

previous chapter.

Research Instrument

The research instruments utilized to gather the needed information such

as follows;

This study use questionnaire that developed by the researchers to ensure

the following participants to make appropriate answers to the given questions.

And also we will conduct an interview together with the YES-O coordinator

and/or YES-O members.

Data Gathering Procedure

To facilitate the gathering data, the following steps were undertaken: the

researchers wrote a letter of permission of approval to the School Head or TIC

13

of Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School to conduct the study, and ask the

YES-O coordinator to have a copy of the lists of the YES-O members who are

enrolled in School Year 2018-2019 upon the approval by them.

After identifying the number of participants, the letter of consent was

already indicated above the questionnaire. Also, the interview was scheduled at

their convenient time and place. It began with the researchers, the purpose of

conducting the study, the gathering of the consent form from the participants,

the establishment of rules, and the recording of the session.

The researchers conducted an interview to clarify confusion and validity

of the participants’ responses. All of the participants were ensured of their

anonymity for confidentiality. There were comments given by the participants

which were treated as academic opinions and will not be taken against them.
14

CHAPTER IV

Presentation, Analysis, and Interpretation of Data

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data gathered

from the conduct of this study. The results of this study were based on the

performance of the implementation of the youth for environment in schools

organization (YES-O) on promoting clean and green environment in Alberto

Olarte Sr. National High School. The researchers seek out an answers to the

problems previously presented. Using the questionnaire, the researchers find

out what is the level of practiced of the YES organization, and also the

researchers transcribed the android phone recorded and coded the statements

of the YES coordinator and the selected members of the YES organization.

Profile of the Participants

The profile of the respondents which include gender, age and grade

levelwere included inthestudy since these are very important in the conduct of

the study. The presentation of the study is done through graphs and charts for

a clearer results.

As observe in this chart of age, the participants 14-15 and 16-17

years old got the same average of percentage, and it is the highest total of

age of the students who belong or member of the youth for environment

in school organization (YES-O) in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School

at the total of 32%. In that particular age of the students, their grade

levels are from grade 8, 9 and 10. This means the members of the YES

organization are more from the said grade level. Followed by 18-19 or 17

years old above got 21%, that is from the 11-12 grade level. On the other

hand, the age of 13 years old below is from grade 7 the least amount of
17

membership in the said organization. It means, the 13 year old or in

grade 7 levels is the lowest because they are not fully aware and well-

oriented of what YES organization is.

10.) Advocating Fun Run for the
Environment. 4.05 Fairly Practiced

Frame 2.

As can be seen, the researchers found out that the level of practice of the

implementation of youth for environment in school organization (YES-O) and

its importance in promoting clean and green environment is on practiced and

fairly practiced level. It means, the YES organization is effective in the School of
18

Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School in terms of promoting clean and green

environment. According to the learning and initiative of the YES organization

memberand also the rules and regulations implemented or objectives with the

said organization, that’s why the researchers come up such results.

The question number 1, 4 and 9 is on the practiced level, because the

member of the YES organization cannot implement clean-up drive inside and

surrounding the school premises, including public and common areas of the

community regularlybecause of some reasons like, having a class the member

of the said organization, and since it is an organization of the youth in school,

and lack of equipment to come up with the clean-up drive activity.

Youth advocates for Environment Summer Camp, got the result of practiced, it

might because some students in AOSNHS are not only members in YES-O,

because some of them are members of other organization in school so that

their time are divided and also this so called “lack of financial support”. Lack of

financial support is one of the factors to do what you want and to have what

you like in the daily lives in an individual or in a group of people especially in

organization. According to the YES-O coordinator on her statement, she stated

“naa man koy gi proposed na MRF, but as karon wala jud namo sya na

implement due to lack of budget”. She viewed how the financial is important in

organization to supplement the activities proposed and to acquire the

objectives to build a better organization.

Be aware and create awareness in others of the state of the Philippine

environment prevailing issues and concerns, For ourselves and for others also
19

we need to be aware and create awareness at all times for that, if there are

some unexpected incidents that is danger to us we are all ready to face that

situation and overcome for it.

Frame 3.

The difficulty of electing or seeking members because most of the time, the

members of YES organization surveying the every corners or classrooms of

20

Alberto Olarte Sr. National high School to knowif they are segregating the

wastes and disposing the wastes properly or not.

Moreover, the YES organizations encounter lack of budget due to implementing

some projects and activities in Alberto Olarte Sr. National High School.

However, their organization is effective in terms of the practices or objectives

implementedby the DepEd Order No. 72 series of 2003. Evidently, it is

validated by the questionnaire that shows from previous page that the YES

organization is on practiced and fairly practiced level.

The YES-O coordinator stated “Somehow I could say its effective pero, naa

raman gud gihapon sa mga bata gud”, she confirmed that their organization is

somehow its effective. But she reason out, it depends on the behaviour of the

students, if they cooperate to do the task that is given to them and what is the

rules and regulations that you have been implemented. It means, the

effectiveness of one advocate is depends on the participation of community.

The school club YES-O coordinator would have planning to make a

Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for throwing the wastes. MRF is a facility that

receives waste, separate and prepares recyclable material.

Wasman (2004) added that material recovery facilities (MRFs) in a solid

waste management system could be a doable alternative to acquire sustainable

development goals in urban areas if current household and sidewalk recycling

cannot validate successfully in the long run.

Additionally, the school club YES-O coordinator in Alberto Olarte Sr.

National High school would also to implement a compost pit in the said school.
21

Inckel et. al. (2005) demonstrates the importance of composting, compost is an

organic fertilizer that can be made on the farm at very low cast. Compost is

decomposed organic matter, such as crop residues and/or animal manure. In

order to increase the soil fertility in the shortentimeand the nutrients have to

be added to the soil.

Lastly, for the answer of the statement of the problem number 3, the

researchers conduct an interview to answer the question provided on that

number. The researchers found out that they have provided or implemented a

project out of the DepEd Order No.72 s.2003 and that is “Basura mo i-shoot

mo”where garbage put in the bottle.
