CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION ABOUT INTERNSHIP, INDUSTRY PROFILE
 INTRODUCTION TO INTERNSHIP

As internship is an official program offered by a business to its potential employees. Interns

work either low maintenance or full time at an organization for a specific timeframe. Temporary
jobs are most mainstream with students or graduate understudies who work between one to four
months and have an objective to increase pragmatic work or research related understanding.

This project generally focuses on the overall organizations study. It comprises to

different areas that deal with the different aspects of the organizations and is
fundamental to understand the organizational change. This report is prepared on the
basis of 4 week’s practical experience in the company which helped me to know about
the company over all operation and activities. It is a job oriented process which aim to
develop special skills related to the job. Through internship process, effort is made to
increase realistic skill along with empirical knowledge.

Under internship, business organization or technical institute and college or university

jointly impart training for students during his bachelor or master degree. The objective
of such programmed is to strike a balance between theoretical and practical knowledge.
Educational institute impart theoretical knowledge to their students but for practical
knowledge they are sent to business organization.

An internship is a pre-professional work experience that provides students, recent

graduates, and career changes with a chance to find out more about a certain career. For
students, internships provide a way to gain work experience, supplement academic
classes and, in some cases, and may be earn college credit points. Internships could be
paid or unpaid. Even when its paid, remuneration is modest.

Internships usually go on for six to twelve weeks and are the time that coincides with
the holidays, I did it only for 4 weeks to gain the relevant knowledge and skills required
in the field as well as add weight to the resume.

My intention was for a period of four weeks starting from June 25 th to July 21st. I went
every day. I enjoyed work and had a great experience with departmental heads and other
employees who helped me and guided me during internship period. The data collected is
of secondary type basically from the head of departments related to the unit.

Each of the unit heads guided me about their particular operations and its working
styles, the processes that they carry out in the department. Not only through the word of
mouth but also I got an opportunity to study the processes offered by the company in
present scenario to the customers. Just not once that I could go and approach them and
gather information but I had a chance to meet them any number of times when I had any
doubts they would help me give me all the information I needed when they were free.

I have done internship at “global logistics services inc” the company has not given
much information regarding this company overall operation activities because I did not
have enough time to study but I have gained something about its sales and service.

 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

 Apply classroom theory

What have I learned in the classroom, which relates to the world of work? How are the
concepts I have read about in textbooks applied in practice? What theories, ideas, or
concepts might be applied in my career area.

 Skill development

What new skills will I learn or hope to learn during the internship? Some skills you may
have the chance to develop include: operating office or computer equipment; handling a
variety of situations simultaneously; organizing or analyzing data, records, or budgets; or
improving teamwork, writing, and speaking abilities. Assignments and work environment
will determine the types of skills developed.

 Personal development
It is important to understand how to communicate knowledge to strangers, supervisors, and
peers. Be aware of when to speak and when to listen. Try to understand the employer’s
organizational chart (formal or informal). What is a typical career path? What sort of education
and experience is normally required in each line of work

 Be Specific

Learning objectives should be specific to provide understanding of the your needs and direction.
Concrete objectives will increase the likelihood that the internship will be a successful. Review
the examples below to distinguish the differences between vague and specific learning
objectives. Work to avoid vague language as you create your learning objectives for your
upcoming internship. Note how to deal with pressure, tension, and praise in work relationships.

 Share

Once the internship learning objectives have been created list them on the Learning
Plan to submit to the Internship coordinator for approval into the MHR Internship class.
Communicate these objectives with your site supervisor who can help you find ways to
accomplish your objectives during the course of the internship

 Industry Profile

Logistics is the management of the stream of resources between the purpose of

beginning and the purpose of utilization keeping in mind the end goal to meet a few
prerequisites, for instance, of clients or companies. The assets oversaw in coordination
can incorporate physical things, for example, nourishment, materials, hardware, fluids,
and staff, and dynamic things, for example, time, data, particles, and vitality.

The co ordinations of physical things normally include the reconciliation of data stream
of material and of taking care of, creation, bundling, stock, transportation, warehousing
and regularly security. The many-sided quality of coordination can be displayed,
investigated, pictured, and upgraded by devoted reproduction programming. The
minimization of the utilization of assets is a typical inspiration. Designing and
overseeing distribution centers are a focal worry for both business coordination and
military coordination.

Logistics Viewpoints

Inbounding logistics is one of the essential procedures of coordination, focusing on

obtaining and organizing the inbound development of materials, parts, or potentially
completed stock from providers to assembling or get together plants, stockrooms, or
retail stores. Outbound logistics is the procedure identified with the capacity and
development of the last item and the related data streams from the finish of the
generation line to the end client.

Logistics Fields

Given the services performed by logisticians, the main fields of logistics can be broken
down as follows:

 Procurement logistics
 Production logistics
 Distribution logistics
 After-sales logistics
 Disposal logistics
 Reverse logistics
 Green logistics
 Global logistics
 Domestics logistics
 Concierge Service
 RAM logistics
Logistics Specialist inventories supplies in a storeroom aboard the aircraft carrier USS George
H.W.Bush.
Procurement Logistics

Procurement logistics consists of activities such as market research, requirements

planning, make-or-buy decisions, supplier management, ordering, and order controlling. The
targets in procurement logistics might be contradictory: maximizing efficiency by concentrating
on core competences, outsourcing while maintaining the autonomy of the company, or
minimizing procurement costs while maximizing security within the supply process.

Production Logistics

Production logistics connects procurement to distribution logistics. Its main function is to

use available production capacities to produce the products needed in distribution logistics.
Production logistics activities are related to organizational concepts, layout planning, production
planning, and control.

Distribution Logistics

Distribution logistics has, as main tasks, the delivery of the finished products to the
customer. It consists of order processing, warehousing, and transportation. Distribution logistics
is necessary because the time, place, and quantity of production differs with the time, place, and
quantity of consumption.

Disposal Logistics
Disposal logistics has as its main function to reduce logistics cost(s) and enhance
service(s) related to the disposal of waste produced during the operation of a business.

Reverse Logistics

Reverse logistics denotes all those operations related to the reuse of products and
materials. The reverse logistics process includes the management and the sale of surpluses, as
well as products being returned to vendors from buyers. Reverse logistics stands for all
operations related to the reuse of products and materials. It is "the process of planning,
implementing, and controlling the efficient, cost effective flow of raw materials, in-process
inventory, finished goods and related information from the point of consumption to the point of
origin for the purpose of recapturing value or proper disposal. More precisely, reverse logistics is
the process of moving goods from their typical final destination for the purpose of capturing
value, or proper disposal. The opposite of reverse logistics is forward logistics."

Green Logistics

Green logistics describes all attempts to measure and minimize the ecological impact of
logistics activities. This includes all activities of the forward and reverse flows. This can be
achieved through intermodal freight transport, path optimization, vehicle saturation and city
logistics.

RAM Logistics

RAM Logistics combines both business logistics and military logistics since it is
concerned with highly complicated technological systems for which Reliability, Availability and
Maintainability are essential, ex: telecommunication systems and military supercomputers.

Military Logistics

Punjab Regiment used mules for carrying cargo during WWII. Animals have been used
for logistic purposes by different people throughout history, the Roman army in particular
preferred mules over donkeys for their carrying capacity. In military science, maintaining one's
supply lines while disrupting those of the enemy is a crucial aspect. Some would say the most
crucial element of military strategy, since an armed force without resources and transportation is
defenseless. The defeat of the British in the American War of Independence and the defeat of the
Axis in the African theater of World War II are attributed by some scholars to logistical failures.
The historical leaders Hannibal Barca, Alexander the Great, and the Duke of Wellington are
considered to have been logistical geniuses.

Military have a significant need for logistics solutions and so have developed advanced
implementations. Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) is a discipline used in military industries to
ensure an easily supportable system with a robust customer service (logistic) concept at the
lowest cost and in line with (often high) reliability, availability, maintainability, and other
requirements, as defined for the project. In military logistics, logistics officers manage how and
when to move resources to the places they are needed.

Supply chain management in military logistics often deals with a number of variables in
predicting cost, deterioration, consumption, and future demand. The United States Armed Forces
categorical supply classification was developed in such a way that categories of supply with
similar consumption variables are grouped together for planning purposes. For instance,
peacetime consumption of ammunition and fuel will be considerably lower than wartime
consumption of these items, whereas other classes of supply such as subsistence and clothing
have a relatively consistent consumption rate regardless of war or peace.

Some classes of supply have a linear demand relationship: as more troops are added,
more supply items are needed; or as more equipment is used, more fuel and ammunition are
consumed. Other classes of supply must consider a third variable besides usage and quantity:
time. As equipment ages, more and more repair parts are needed over time, even when usage and
quantity stays consistent. By recording and analyzing these trends over time and applying them
to future scenarios, the US Armed Forces can accurately supply troops with the items necessary
at the precise moment they are needed. History has shown that good logistical planning creates a
lean and efficient fighting force. The lack thereof can lead to a clunky, slow, and ill-equipped
force with too much or too little supply.

Business Logistics

One definition of business logistics speaks of "having the right item in the right quantity
at the right time at the right place for the right price in the right condition to the right customer".
Business logistics incorporates all industry sectors and aims to manage the fruition of project life
cycles, supply chains, and resultant efficiencies.

The term business logistics has evolved since the 1960s due to the increasing complexity
of supplying businesses with materials and shipping out products in an increasingly globalized
supply chain, leading to a call for professionals called "supply chain logisticians".

In business logistics may have either an internal focus (inbound logistics) or an external
focus (outbound logistics), covering the flow and storage of materials from point of origin to
point of consumption (see supply-chain management). The main functions of a qualified
logistician include inventory management, purchasing, transportation, warehousing, consultation
and the organizing and planning of these activities. Logisticians combine a professional
knowledge of each of these functions to coordinate resources in an organization.

Logistics Management

Logistics management is that part of the supply chain that plans, implements, and
controls the efficient, effective forward and reverses flow and storage of goods, services, and
related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet
customer requirements.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), established in the United
Kingdom in 1919, received a Royal Charter in 1926. The Chartered Institute is one of the
professional bodies or institutions for the logistics and transport sectors that offers professional
qualifications or degrees in logistics management. CILT programs can be studied at centers
around UK, some of which also offer distance learning options. The institute also has overseas
branches namely The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Australia (CILTA) in Australia
and Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) in Hong Kong.

Second-Party Logistics Service (2PL) Providers (Asset-Based Logistics Industry):

Second-party logistics service providers, or asset-based logistics service providers, invest

heavily in fixed assets such as aircraft, ships, trucking fleets, and terminals. They provide
services to their customers through their own assets.
Hierarchy of the logistics industry

Third-Party Logistics

Africk and Calkins (1994) refer to 3PL as 'a relationship between a shipper and a third
party which, compared with basic services, has more customized offerings, encompasses a
broader number of service functions and is characterized by a longer-term, more mutually
beneficial relationship'. Fung et al., (2005) defined 3PL service providers wherein 'a Third Party
handles and integrates different logistics functions, involving some management capacity of
supply chain integration, e.g., freight forwarders'.

Third-party logistics service providers are generally asset-light or non-asset based. Third-
party logistics services providers include contract logistics (CL) service providers and FFs.

• Contract Logistics (CL) Service Providers

Beginning 1980, a new class of non-asset-based services providers has emerged in the
market. The core activities of CL service providers include managing inventory for third parties
and offering other value-added activities such as pick-and-pack, assembly, labeling, quality
control, reconditioning, and reverse logistics.
• Freight Forwarders (FFs)

The freight forwarder (FF) is one of two service providers under the banner of 3PL. A
person or company would normally contact a travel agent if they plan to travel and FFs if they
wish to send a shipment to another party. The companies who offer services to senders or
receivers by shipping goods from the place of origin to the place of destination are called FFs.
FFs are broadly divided into domestic freight forwarders and international freight forwarders
(IFFs).

Shippers and consignees would not normally contact airlines or shipping lines to ship
their cargo because airlines and shipping lines normally only offer basic cargo space from
airports or ports of origin to airports or ports of destination. Under normal circumstances, airlines
and shipping lines would not offer ancillary services such as collection and/or delivery of
shipments, preparation of related documents for transportation, and customs clearance. In
contrast, IFFs offer one-stop service from collection of the shipments, preparation of export
documents, booking the required space from airlines or shipping lines, to clearing the goods at
destinations and delivering to final consignees.

Merger Global (2008) states that the global supply network has changed considerably
with trade liberalization. Sourcing and manufacturing have been progressively shifting from high
labour cost markets such as the United States and Western Europe to low labour cost markets
such as China. The shift started 30 years ago with low-value consumer products and is moving
up the product value spectrum. As sourcing patterns have shifted, manufacturers and retailers
have increasingly relied on FFs to be the network managers of their intercontinental supply
chains. The reliance of end users on forwarders has created a US$ 115 billion industry (Merger
Global, 2008).

Fourth-Party Logistics

The term 'fourth-party logistics provider' (4PL service providers) is a trademarked term
owned by Anderson Consulting. The term refers to the evolution in logistics of suppliers
formerly focused on warehousing and transportation (third-party logistics providers) into
suppliers offering a more integrated service. Among other services, 4PL services include supply
chain integration and solutions, change management capabilities, and value-added services.
Basically, 4PL companies are 3PL providers that either have added these capabilities to their
services or have formed alliances to provide these services. Thus, a 4PL provider is a supply
chain integrator that assembles and manages the resources, capabilities, and technology of its
own organization with those of complementary service providers to deliver a comprehensive
supply chain solution. The providers leverage the competencies of 3PL providers and business
process managers to deliver a supply chain solution through a centralized point of contact.

Emergency Logistics

Emergency logistics is a term used by the logistics, supply chain, and manufacturing industries to
denote specific time-critical modes of transport used to move goods or objects rapidly in the
event of an emergency. The reason for enlisting emergency logistics services could be a
production delay or anticipated production delay, or an urgent need for specialized equipment to
prevent events such as aircraft being grounded (also known as "aircraft on ground"

CHAPTER 3

MCKINSEY’S 7S FRAMEWORK
Model of Mckinsey's 7s Framework
The model is most often used as an organizational analysis tool to assess and monitor changes in
the internal situation of an organization.
The model is based on the theory that, for an organization to perform well, these seven elements
need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing. So, the model can be used to help identify what
needs to be realigned to improve performance, or to maintain alignment (and performance)
during other types of change.
Whatever the type of change restructuring, new processes, organizational merger, new systems,
change of leadership, and so on – the model can be used to understand how the organizational
elements are interrelated, and so ensure that the wider impact of changes made in one area is
taken into consideration.
The Seven Interdependent Elements
The basic premise of the model is that there are seven internal aspects of an organization that
need to be aligned if it is to be successful

Hard Elements
Strategy - Purpose of the business and the way the organization seeks to enhance its competitive
advantage.
Structure - Division of activities; integration and coordination mechanisms.
Systems - Formal procedures for measurement, reward and resource allocation.

Soft Elements
Shared Values- organisations norms and behavioural patterns among the employees.

As per the VTU’s guidance I have undertaken in logistic company (Organization Study) at global
logistic service Inc in Bangalore. I had Good experience in logistics company .It is great
experience of interaction with the company employees and going through the company’s data
has given rich experience of logistics. It has given me an Opportunity to study the human
behavior and also makes me ready to face different situations, which would normally come
across while on work in the office.

During the Four weeks, It was totally a new experience entering into the company. I spent most
of my time in export, import and marketing departments, interacting with people etc.

This internship is a great learning experience in the logistics industry. Now I have a better
picture of what is required for importing and exporting the products the numerous documents,
the container requirement, who is involved in the importing process, what terms are the
importers using for trade, how the importing is done, how the costs factor in the process. This
internship is my first experience in the logistics industry. Documents requires are Commercial
Invoice (and the invoice prescribed by the importer), Packing list. Certificate of Inspection,
Certificate of Insurance/Insurance Policy. Bill of Lading/Airway bill/Combined Transport

an organization really functions.
