If…

If you have time next weekend... If you can afford it...

If you wake up late tomorrow… If you are very busy next week...

If your English improves a lot... If you live to 100…

If you decide to start a new career... If you get the opportunity...

If you feel very tired this evening... If you suddenly become ill...

If you don’t get a salary increase... If you go to a party...

If there is nothing interesting on TV

If you go abroad next year...
tonight...

If you get annoyed... If you don’t understand the teacher...

If…? If…?

If…? If…?

If…
In this speaking activity, students practice asking questions using the first conditional and
answering questions using phrases of probability.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each group of three students and cut as
indicated.

Procedure

Begin by writing the following phrases on the board:

Probability Phrases:

I’m sure... I expect... It’s possible... I doubt if... It’s unlikely...

... will definitely... ...will probably... ...may/might.... ...definitely won’t… ...won’t…

Tell the students that they are going to practice asking questions using the first conditional
and answering questions using phrases of probability.

Divide the class into groups of three and give each group a set of cards.

Tell the students to shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile.

Students take it in turns to pick up a card and ask the person on their left a first conditional
question using the clause on the card.

If a student picks up a card with If..., they make their own question using the first conditional.

If the question is grammatically correct, the student scores a point.

The other student then answers the question using a phrase of probability from the board.

If the answer is grammatically correct, they also get a point.

Then the next student picks up a card and so on.

The winner is the student with the highest score at the end of the game.
