FINAL PROJECT
GROUP 12 CLASS B
Learning Context
Learners:
Learners are teenage students who are capable of reading texts with a length of over 300
words and solving follow-up tasks that test reading comprehension. Students understand
how to listen for gist and for details and have been taught to take notes when listening. The
majority of students can express their opinions or answer questions about social-general
topics in full sentences, with some pronunciation faults and grammatical mistakes that
generally do not hinder communication. These students have also been taught about the
format of an opinion essay and are able to meet the requirements of producing written
works of over 140 words each.
Learners have a decent range of vocabulary to express ideas about general-social topics that
do not require specialist knowledge. In terms of grammar, students have learned about the
parts of speech, the tenses, the passive voice, and the articles, and are able to use a mix of
simple and complex sentence forms with some errors that rarely reduce communication.
The class is full of attentive, active and cooperative students. L2 is preferred over L1 in class.
Scenario: Students are young learners currently going through their teenage years, during
which they experience a transition from childhood to adulthood. At this stage of life,
parents are often the people who guide their teen children in selecting the right education
and the right career path as they fear their daughters or sons might not be independent
enough for such responsibilities. This leads to a dependent, aimless life styles among young
learners. Therefore, it is important that schools help teenagers to realise the important of
having ambitions and to develop an ambition – a strong desire to achieve something, be it
fame, fortune or personal bliss. Students who are in their teenage years should be helped to
discover what their aims and dreams are and how to fulfil such goals when they leave
school.
Have you set goals for your future? What are they?
Products: In order to answer the questions, students are required to each make an
electronic portfolio using the tool Microsoft Sway presenting their ambitions and what they
have done / will do to achieve them. Through these electronic portfolios, students
understand themselves and their ambitions better, thus will be better motivated to have
their dreams realized. Teachers gain better insights into their students to inform instruction.

Michael Dell
How could he have managed to become the
youngest CEO of one of the largest American
companies? Michael Dell’s company - Dell
Computer Corporation - now earns more
than $50 million on a daily basis! It sells
computers all over the world. You may even
have a Dell computer at home!
How did he do it? It can’t have been easy,
especially when he’d been told at school
that he wouldn’t get anywhere in life! He
could have been discouraged, but he wasn’t.
He was an average student who was
interested in computers like lots of other
teenagers. He must have been a bit
different, though, because one day he
brought a computer home and started to
take it apart. He then reassembled it just to
see if he could. At university he started
building computers for his fellow students.
He dropped out of college and never looked
back. He managed to fulfill his dream of
making and selling computers. In 1984, and
with only $1,000, he started his own
company. His parents needn’t have worried
as he went on to become a successful
businessman.

Prompt
You may use the questions below as prompts for your portfolio
Have you set goals for your future? What are they?
Due date
Speaker Well, I think in general what whether or not you're ambitious depends on the
1 background you come from. I mean if you come from a family of famous
explorers you're likely to have the ambition of discovering a secret tribe in the
jungle or climbing a high mountain, aren't you? But if you come from a very poor
family, your only goal in the life might be to put food on your children's plates
each day. I think having a particular ambition that makes you different from other
people is probably only something a small number of people can afford to have.
Speaker I believe that you can achieve anything you want if you're really determined and
2 you truly believe in yourself. There are so many people who’ve achieved amazing
things that nobody else thought were possible, just because they persisted and
didn’t let anything or anyone stop them. You don't have to be rich or famous, you
just have to believe that something is important, and have the determination to
keep going until you’ve achieved it. You need to be very strong though, and not
listen to what other people say.
Speaker I don't think being ambitious is a very good idea. I mean, most people will
3 probably tell you they've got some sort of ambition, but how many of those will
succeed? Probably very few. I wouldn't want to be ambitious in the first place,
because I'd be afraid of being a failure and a disappointment to myself and
others. And imagine how much money, time and effort you could waste on trying
to achieve something. You'd probably end up poorer than when you started,
you'd lose your friends on the way, and you'd wish you hadn't tried to change
anything!
Speaker It depends what kind of ambition you're talking about, because I think there are
4 two very different types. There's the type of ambitions little children have, like
going to the moon or being a film star, which are not very realistic, and there are
more realistic ambitions like wanting to become a doctor or a lawyer. For almost
all of us, the first kind is a waste of time, whereas the second kind is really good,
because it gives you a reason to study at school and university, and the
inspiration to work hard and do well. That's much better than just going to school
every day because you have to.
Speaker I've never been an ambitious person, probably because my parents weren't
5 either. They were happy just living an ordinary life, doing their best and keeping
other people happy, and that's how I feel too. Nothing's ever particularly inspired
P: OK, let’s discuss what Jane can do to become a professional football player
M: It’s hard to say, but I think she should watch football matches on TV.
P: Why?
M: Well, I don’tknow. It’s fun, I suppose.
P: Mmm, I’m not sure. It might be fun, but it would be more useful if she joined a team and
practised a few times a week. She would learn the rules of the game and become a better
player too. What do you think?
M: OK, I suppose she would get fit too. But what about reading newspapers? I think that’s a
good idea. She could learn new things about famous football players.
P: I’m not too keen on that idea because I don’t think learning about famous players is very
useful.
M: Hmmm, yes perhaps you’re right. She’ll need to buy new football boots though. She
can’t be a good player without good boots.
P: Yes, OK. So shall we suggest practising in a team and buying boots, then?
M: Yes, those would be best.
