On March 8th, Kaiser Kuo hosted a conversation at Capital M in Beijing with Geremie
R. Barmé, the well­known Sinologist and now director of the Australian Centre for China in the World, as part of
the Capital Literary Festival. This week on Sinica, we are pleased to present a live recording of this show for
anyone who may have missed it. As a live show, the quality is not quite the same as in a closed studio, but this
is an intellectually rewarding discussion and we hope you enjoy it.

The quality of the recording is quite bad. Not so easy listening especially while commuting.

Sorry about the sound quality. It's really quite listenable if you try it with headphones at home!

Great podcast! I hope you guys can get him on the sinica line­up again soon. It was interesting to hear his views
on distorted narratives history. Maybe next time you could explore that more in depth and cite some examples. In
particular I'd be intereted to know why he claims "Mao: The Untold Story" is fantasy. I haven't read it, however
I'd been recommded it by Amazon after buying Frank Dikotter's "Mao's Great Famine", and I was thinking of
reading it. Speaking of Frank Dikotter, I would love to hear your/Geremie Barmé's views on the book in a Sinica
podcast. I found it fascinating, educational, gripping, thorough and well researched; but then again I'm not as well
versed in Chinese history as any of you, so I'd love to hear what you think of it. Once again, great podcast!

All my podcasts last only about 30 seconds then they start again. Why is this? Can this be fixed please?

This is the first report we've ever had of this problem. I'll see what we can do to help figure this out. Getting
started, how exactly are you downloading/playing the shows and what is your setup? i.e. are you using the built­
in flash player or downloading through iTunes or some other method?
