My Reflection on Republic Act 10627

(Anti-Bullying Act)

I learned that RA 10627 is also known as An Act Requiring All Elementary and
Secondary Schools to Adopt Policies to Prevent and Address the Acts of Bullying in Their
Institutions. In this act bullying is referred to as any severe or repeated use by one or more
students of a written, verbal or electronic expression, or a physical act or gesture, or any
combination thereof directed at another student that has the effect of actually causing or
placing the latter in reasonable fear of physical or emotional harm or damage to his
property.
It is stated in this act that all elementary and secondary schools shall adopt policies
to address the existence of bullying in their respective institutions. All schools shall provide
students and their parents or guardians a copy of anti-bullying practices being adopted by
the school. Moreover, the school principal or any person who holds a comparable role shall
be responsible for the implementation and oversight of policies intended to address bullying.
I realized that bullying is a serious problem. Whether it’s verbal, cyber or physical,
bullying can change a person’s life in many ways. Some people may take a constructive
route and speak up about their struggles from being bullied. They may seek professional
help to cope and deal with recovery. Others, who choose to do nothing, don’t reach out for
help. They may become depressed and think suicidal thoughts. According to research,
these victims of bullying cannot handle life itself anymore so they commit suicide. Other
people may develop eating disorders. Other victims of bullying secretly harm themselves.
I personally don’t understand these intimidators. Why would a human being want to
humiliate another person? They make others feel so bad about themselves that they take
dramatic measures to try to change the way they are. Are they secretly self-conscious about
themselves? Do they feel bad about the way they look, so they take it out on others? These
scenarios resemble selfish motives for making someone else feel bad. No matter what the
reason, these tormenters shall be punished.
I believe that it was right and proper that Republic Act 10627 was passed and
became a law to punish bullies. More frequently than not, as a teacher, I personally see and
hear stories of children being bullied. Just think for a moment, about how many times have
we heard on the news, or read in the paper about another fatal victim of bullying. With this
law, it is hoped that the government can stop the bully from taking action. We cannot undo
the past, but we can prevent future attacks.
As a teacher, I will prevent bullying by doing the following:
 Master policies on bullying on the school level. Learning is half the battle.
Implementing it will win the battle.
 Treat Students with respect. Children can emulate the actions of adults. They
sometimes mimic what they can see with the actions of adults. The children should
know that the teacher is open in listening to them.
 Engage colleagues to be more responsive to bullying. Fighting against bullying can
be more powerful if colleagues can be engaged to help in preventing bullying to
happen inside the classroom.
 Hold bullying-centered classroom activities. Children can be helped by letting them
recognized in various media what bullying is. Classroom activities can be centered
on the power of bullying and how it can be resolved.
 Perform immediate proper action. Tolerating bad behavior means approval of that
behavior which can be precedence for other bad behavior.
We live in a wild world so as a humans living with it, we should help each other not
fighting each other. We cannot survive without the unity of everyone. Cyber, physical and
emotional bullying should not tolerated and start a change in our world by helping, caring
and loving each other.
