IV. PROCEDURE
A. Opening Prayer Loving Father,

We place into your hands all the work we do with our

wonderful children. Please lead us by your Spirit to
guide and care for each one of them.

Help us to release the chatty energetic ones to engage

with you adventures.
Help us to encourage the quiet sensitive ones to dwell
on your goodness.
Help us to protect those with trouble or difficulty in
their lives. May they find you.
And show us the way with those who are angry or
frustrated. May we help them manage their feelings.

Lord, these children are all such treasured members of

our church family,
We know you have good plans and purposes for their
lives.
And we thank you for blessing us with these little
ones.

Amen.

journey known as the Exodus?

the Ten Commandments were as a whole
not the individual commandments.

I.
Let the children watch a video about Exodus
19:1-25.

And then say, "Then God spoke, and he gave

his people the Commandments." (Have
children recite the commandments.)

1. I. You shall have no other gods before Me.

2.
3. II. You shall make no idols.
4.
5. III. You shall not take the name of the Lord
your God in vain.
6.
7. IV. Keep the Sabbath day holy.
8.
9. V. Honor your father and your mother.

VI. You shall not murder.

VII. You shall not commit adultery.

VIII. You shall not steal.

IX. You shall not bear false witness against

your neighbor.

X. You shall not covet.

Have the children count off, or in some way divide up into two or more teams.

Give each team a ball, bean bag, frisbee, or something like that.

Tell them that when you say GO the game begins.

Count to 3 and say GO.

The children will not know what to do, how to begin, or even what the game is. They will not
hesitate in telling that you have forgotten a very important part of playing a game – THE
RULES!

Discuss about the rules God gave us, and why God gave us the rules.

Start over with the game, Now with the rules.

Print out commandments individually on strips of paper without their corresponding numbers.
Divide the children into teams.
However, each player or team will need their own set of numberless commandments.
Use different colors of paper to distinguish teams, but this isn't essential.

Establish a running course. In front place the strips of numberless commandments.

At the go, players race the course, go in front, retrieve one commandment, and then race back
to the start position where they will begin to arrange their commandments in the correct order.
Players continue playing until all the commandments have been retrieved, making sure not to
take duplicate commandments from the top of the "mountain."
If players take a duplicate command, they must climb back up and put it back before taking
another commandment.
First player or team to receive all ten commandments and place them in correct order wins.

Tell the children to go to their respective groups in the past game for the second
activity.
Assign each group one commandment which they will answer the following questions:
 What does this commandment mean? (Define any terms that may not be familiar
to the class.)
 Has the meaning of this commandment changed today? If so, how? How could
this commandment be applied to a current situation?
 Do you believe in this commandment? Why or why not?
 What might be challenging or difficult about obeying this commandment? How
would following or obeying this commandment be rewarding?
Hold a class discussion about the student’s research on each of the Ten Commandments.
Begin with the first commandment, and let each group lead the conversation, explaining their
understanding of the commandment and what it means today.
V. SUMMARIZATION
For the Christian, the Ten Commandments are not a way to get to heaven. They are not even
the center of our faith. Instead, Jesus is both the way to heaven and the center of our faith.
Nevertheless, the Ten Commandments are understood to be of great significance for the
Christian.

Being a Christian has to do with a personal relationship with God Almighty, a relationship
which occurs when a person trusts Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

However, when this happens a new life begins, and this life has a concrete shape. This shape
is, in part, congruent to a life which is shaped by obedience to the Ten Commandments.

Of course, the life which has been shaped by Jesus Christ is also marked by love, repentance,
hope, and so forth. And these qualities are distinct from obedience to the Ten Commandments.
What is true, however, is that a life which is not shaped by this obedience cannot be a life
where faith, hope and love are flourishing. To run afoul of the Ten Commandments is thus to
live a life which is not centered on Jesus Christ. The Ten Commandments, then, are like
reflectors on a highway. They warn us of danger. They warn us when our life with God is
headed in the wrong direction. They warn us when our life with God is careening toward
danger.

The Ten Commandments touch on two relationships. They tell us of our relationship with God
and with our neighbor. This is appropriate for the Christian. Jesus Christ died to heal both our
broken relationship with God and our broken relationship with our neighbor. As might be
expected from what we have already said, the Ten Commandments do not tell us how to love
God or how to love our neighbor. They do, however, warn us when we are moving in the
opposite direction of love.

and guide us safely home.
Do not let the learning and conversations of this gathering fade, but, instead, may they
continue to ruminate within us and bear fruit in our children throughout, until we find
ourselves together again.
We ask this in the name of Jesus, and in the power of the Holy Spirit,
Amen.
