COMPACTION OF SOILS

1. A standard proctor compaction test performed on a sample of crushed limestone (Gs = 2.70)
obtained a maximum dry unit weight of 90 lb/ft3 at optimum moisture content (OMC). A
field compacted sample showed a moisture of 28% and a unit weight of 103.7 lb/ft3.
a. Find the relative compaction (RC).
b. Find the degree of saturation S of the soil sample.

Solution:

𝛾𝑚𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡 103.7
𝛾𝑑(𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑) = = = 81.02 𝑝𝑐𝑓
1 + 𝑤 1 + 0.28

𝛾𝑑(𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑) 81.02
a. 𝑅𝐶 = = = 0.90
𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑎𝑥) 90

The Relative Compaction = 90%

𝐺𝑠 𝛾𝑤 𝐺𝑠 𝛾𝑤 𝐺 𝛾𝑤 (2.70)(62.4)
b. 𝛾𝑑𝑟𝑦 = ; 1+𝑒 = ; 𝑒 = ( 𝛾𝑠 − 1) = − 1 = 1.08
1+𝑒 𝛾𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑑𝑟𝑦 81.02

𝑆𝑒 = 𝑤𝐺𝑠
𝑤𝐺𝑠 (0.28)(2.70)
𝑆= = = 0.70
𝑒 (1.08)
Saturation S = 70%

2. The relative compaction (RC) is the dry unit weight obtained in the field 𝛾𝑑(𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑) =
18.4 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , as compared to the standard proctor obtained in the laboratory. The maximum
and minimum dry unit weight of the sand are 𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑎𝑥) = 20.4 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 and 𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑖𝑛) =
13.9 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3. Determine the field values of:
a. Relative density (of compaction) Dr;
b. The moist unit weight 𝛾 when its moisture content is 15%.

Solution:

a. The relative density 𝐷𝑟 , is,

𝛾𝑑(𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑) − 𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑖𝑛) 𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑎𝑥) (18.4 − 13.9) 20.4
𝐷𝑟 = × = ( ) = 0.768 = 𝟕𝟔. 𝟖%
𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑎𝑥) − 𝛾𝑑(𝑚𝑖𝑛) 𝛾𝑑(𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑) (20.4 − 13.9) 18.4

b. The moist unit weight 𝛾 is;

𝛾 = 𝛾𝑑 (1 + 𝑤) = 18.4(1 + 0.15) = 𝟐𝟏. 𝟐 𝒌𝑵/𝒎𝟑
3. An embankment for a highway 30 m wide and 1.5 m thick is to be constructed from a sandy
soil, trucked in from a borrow pit. The water content of the sandy soil in the borrow pits 15%
and its voids ratio is 0.69. Specifications require the embankment to be compacted to a dry
unit weight of 18 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3. Determine for 1 km length of embankment the following :𝛾𝑑 =
15.7 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 , Gs = 2.70.
a. The number of 10 m3 truckloads of sandy soil required to construct the embankment.
b. The weight of water per truck load of sandy soil.

Solution:

a. 𝑉 = 30(1.5)(1 𝑘𝑚 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔) = 45𝑥103 𝑚3

𝛾𝑑(𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑) 18
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑝𝑖𝑡 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = (𝑉) = ( ) (45𝑥103 )𝑚3
𝛾𝑑(𝑏𝑜𝑟𝑟𝑜𝑤 𝑝𝑖𝑡) 15.7
18 45𝑥103 𝑚3
𝑁𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑘 𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑝𝑠 = ( )( ) = 𝟓, 𝟏𝟔𝟎 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒍𝒐𝒂𝒅𝒔
15.7 10 𝑚3

b. 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑦 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑖𝑛 1 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑐𝑘 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 𝑊𝑑 = 10 𝑚3 (15.7 𝑘𝑁/𝑚3 ) = 157 𝑘𝑁

𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 = 𝜔𝑊𝑑 = (0.15)(157 𝑘𝑁) = 𝟐𝟑. 𝟔 𝒑𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒓𝒖𝒄𝒌 𝒍𝒐𝒂𝒅
