Dear Hiring Manager:

I am a University of Arizona BSN student graduating in May 2019, and I am excited to apply for the Mayo
Clinic Nurse Residency Program in Phoenix. I believe that this position will allow me to successfully make
the transition from new graduate to confident nurse. Mayo Clinic’s reputation as a magnet hospital and as
a leader in healthcare is widely known and respected; therefore, I would be honored to join the team at
Mayo Clinic and deliver healing care for patients on the cutting edge of evidence-based practice.

I believe my strong GPA through nursing school reflects the dedicated work ethic I will bring with me into
my career. Not only did I succeed in the theory portion of nursing school, I also excelled in the clinical
settings. I am passionate about critical care, and I believe that working in a cutting-edge facility like Mayo
Clinic will provide the optimal setting to challenge me to manage and care for high acuity patients.
Throughout my clinical rotations and preceptorship, I have loved working in the various intensive care
units. My five-week preceptorship in the cardiovascular ICU at Banner University Medical Center in
Tucson allowed me to grow as a student and learn what it meant to be an ICU nurse. I was challenged to
critically think, problem solve, and perform a wide variety of skills. By the end of five weeks, I was caring
for a full patient assignment with only minimal direction from my preceptor. I believe that my eagerness
to learn and my genuine care about the work I do sets me apart. I readily assume leadership positions, but
I am also not afraid to ask questions and ask for help when I need it. I am confident that my strong
communication skills, effective time management, ability to work under pressure, and enthusiasm for
learning will allow me to succeed in this setting.

I hope to work for the Mayo Clinic and provide high quality, compassionate care to patients. My goal is to
obtain a CCRN certification and eventually return to school to become a certified registered nurse
anesthetist. I know that to achieve this goal, I need to work hard to succeed in a high acuity unit. I believe
that the nurse residency program at Mayo Clinic will provide me with an incredible opportunity to
become the best nurse that I can be. Mayo Clinic’s exceptional patient outcomes are well-known, and it
would be an honor to be a member of the team that helps create these outcomes.

I think that my enthusiasm for nursing and my strong foundation of success throughout my bachelor’s
program will allow me to excel. I am eager to join Mayo Clinic and grow as a nurse. As a hopeful member
of the upcoming generation of critical care nurses, I look forward to contributing to the betterment of the
healthcare of patients and making an impact on the hospital and Arizona community for years to come. I
look forward to hearing from Mayo Clinic and joining the team soon. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Shane Pendleton
