UST Hospital Center Visit
Last March 20, 2019, we had a Center Visit at the UST Hospital in España, Manila. This
is the second center visit we had this semester. Sir Verg, who is one of the staffs there, toured us
in their facility. Their facility is divided into many treatment areas. Then, we are assigned
individually to all the staffs of the facility. My staff then let me join his interns that he handles. I
met Kuya Rey who is a UST intern there. He is handling a CVA patient with a right hemiparesis
at that time. That day, the patient had bicycling exercise for endurance, pull lever exercise for the
upper extremity and leg press exercise for the lower extremity at the gym area. After that the
patient had an exercise wherein he would remove all the beads of a large abacus-like toy to
maintain mobility of his affected upper extremity. We had electrical stimulation also on the
upper extremity and the lower extremity with ankle weights on it. Then, he had balance exercise
on a trampoline while catching a ball. Lastly, he ambulate while skipping over the obstacles
given by the intern.

The similarities between Medical City and UST Hospital are they have the same area for
their occupational therapist and speech pathologist. It means they are able share knowledge and
proper referral on their patients who have more health impairments/ problems which can be
managed by them. Both facilities also use shockwave therapy which is a new modality in
physical rehabilitation. The difference in UST Hospital is we had a one-on-one interaction with
an intern and patient. We are able share knowledge and focus on the patient’s case and treatment.
Also, they have a specific treatment for each patient while in Medical City they follow a
treatment plan good for all the patients with the same condition. It means that no patient with the
same condition is alike when it comes in the treatment. At UST Hospital, they have an
orthosis/prosthesis with them at the same area which is good so there patients won’t have a hard
time looking for their orthotic/prosthetic needs. Due to many patients they tend to forget some of
their patients which are currently having their treatment session.

It was a good encounter to visit other rehabilitation centers. We are able to interact with
other interns and different type of patients. We are able to learn new things that the staffs and
interns have thought us. With that, we are being prepared for our upcoming internship this year
so we can be able to treat and do the best for our patients.
