MUSICAL THEATRE

Musical theater is a form of theatre combining music, songs, spoken dialogue

and dance. The emotional content of the piece – humor, pathos, love, anger
– as well as the story itself, is communicated through the words, music,
movement and technical aspects of the entertainment as an integrated
whole. Since the early 20th century, musical theatre stage works have
generally been called simply, "musicals".

Musicals are performed all

around the world. They may be
presented in large venues, such
as big budget West End and
Broadway theatre productions in
London and New York City, or in
smaller Fringe Theatre, Off-
Broadway or regional productions, on tour, or by amateur groups in schools,
theatres and other performance spaces. In addition to Britain and North
America, there are vibrant musical theatre scenes in many countries in
Europe, Latin America and Asia.

A musical often opens with a song that sets the tone of the show, introduces
some or all of the major characters, and shows the setting of the play. Within
the compressed nature of the musical, the writers must develop the
characters and the plot. Music provides a means to express emotion.
However, typically, many fewer words are sung in a five-minute song than
are spoken in a five-minute block of dialogue. Therefore there is less time to
develop drama than in a straight play of equivalent length, since a musical
usually devotes more time to music than to dialogue.

Musicals audiences are come from

high income and education levels.
The form of musicals is situated in
a stratum comparable to classical
music. Classical music is typically
labeled with the stamp of “high art”
and possesses a great deal of
cultural capital; musicals are in the
process of attaining similar status.

BROADWAY ITSELF
Broadway is the street in New York that has
become the worldwide name in theatre
entertainment. Theatre on Broadway dates
back to 1810, when most actors were imported
from European countries. Actor Junius Brutus
Booth and his sons became one of America’s
first great acting families.

By the 19th Century, the development of

American theatre was in full swing. Throughout
the 1900's Broadway shows were strongly
influenced by the events of the time, from comedic spoofs to heartfelt
dramas. The 1920's, 30's, and 40's saw many ups and downs in theatre
production, due to historical events such as prohibition, the stock market
crash, war, and the draw to Hollywood for much of Broadway?s top talent.

Today, the longest running show in Broadway history is still in production.

The Phantom of the Opera debuted on Broadway in 1988.

The "Great White Way" is a nickname

for the Midtown section of Broadway
that encompasses the Theatre District,
between 42nd and 53rd Streets. The
headline "Found on the Great White
Way" appeared in the February 3,
1902, edition of the New York Evening
Telegram inspired by the millions of lights on theatre marquees and billboard
advertisements that illuminate the area.

lyricists, were added for this film.

Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical film, directed

by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by
DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. The

DREAMGIRLS MUSICAL PLAY

The Story
A period piece set in the 1960s and 1970s with a primarily African-American
cast. The musical was based on the history and evolution of American R&B
music during the eras of doo-wop, soul, the Motown Sound, funk, and disco.
In addition, the stage musical contains several allusions to the lives and
careers of Motown Records act The Supremes. Dreamgirls follows the lives
of Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson, three young women who
form an R&B singing trio from Detroit, Michigan called "The Dreamettes".
Thanks to manipulative agent and record executive Curtis Taylor, Jr., the
Dreamettes become famous as the backing group for soul singer James
"Thunder" Early. Conflict arises when Curtis transforms "The Dreamettes"
into the pop-friendly "Dreams," particularly when he has Deena replace Effie
as both lead singer of the group and as his romantic interest.
