SECTION 1 - GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE
R 1.1.1 a. (Exception) This practice covers centrifugal pumps.
b. All requirements specified in this practice are additions to those of API-610, unless specifically
noted as exceptions. Paragraph numbers in this practice which do not appear in API-610 are
new paragraphs.
c. An asterisk () indicates that a decision by the Purchaser is required or that additional
information is furnished by the Purchaser.
Note: A bullet () is shown in API-610 indicating that a Purchaser's decision is required.
 d. Vendor Qualification. Pumps rated over 500 hp (375 kW), pumps handling liquids at -50F
(-45C) or lower and pumps with a discharge pressure above 500 psig (35 barg) shall be
supplied by vendors qualified by experience to manufacture the units proposed. To qualify, the
vendor must have manufactured, at the proposed point of manufacture, at least two units of
comparable power, speed, pressure, temperature and pumped fluid which have been operating
satisfactorily for at least one year each.
I  1.1.3 a. Proposals to provide any of the pump types listed in Table 1.1 of API-610 shall be submitted to
Purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
 b. (Exception) Proposals for vertical in-line pumps for services greater than 1000 USGPM
(110 m 3/hr), 500 ft (150 meters) or 300F (150C) or requiring drivers over 150 BHP (112 kW)
shall be submitted to the Purchaser for approval of the Owner's Engineer.
C  1.1.4 (Exception) Proposals to furnish pumps or mechanical seals that do not meet all requirements
of this practice, based on specific non flammable, non hazardous service conditions, shall be
submitted to Purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
1.5 REFERENCED PUBLICATIONS

SECTION 2 - BASIC DESIGN


2.1 GENERAL
R  2.1.9 Pump Suction Specific Speed (S) shall not exceed 12,000 (calculated using rotative speed in
rev/min, flow in GPM, and NPSH in feet). See Par. 1.4.49.
O,C 2.1.11 a. The head curve for the pump shall be continuously rising from the rated capacity point to the
shutoff point. The pump head at shutoff shall be at least 110% of the head at the rated
capacity point.
S  b. The pump head at shutoff shall not exceed 120% of the head at the rated capacity point
without approval of the Owner's Engineer.
c. Pumps for parallel operation shall have equal head rise (within 1% as measured on the
performance test) to shutoff.
 d. Low capacity, high head pumps may be exempt from the requirements of 2.1.11.a and
2.1.11.b above with approval of the Owner's Engineer.
 e. (Exception) Proposals to use orifices as a means of providing a continuous rise to shutoff shall
be submitted to the Purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
E,I 2.1.14 (Exception) Noise. Pump vendors shall furnish noise emission data for the quoted equipment with
their proposal per IP 2-1-1.
R,C 2.1.17 Application of pump cooling water shall be as follows:
a. Pumps with non-pressurized bearing lubrication, and pumping temperatures under 400 °F
or 200°C shall be designed to operate continuously without use of cooling. Bearing oil
temperatures shall not exceed those of Par. 2.9.2.3, and shall assume no credit for motor
cooling air. Cooling water may be used for cooling seal flush liquid to assure proper mechanical
seal operation.
b. Pumps with pressurized lubrication or pumping temperatures over 400°F or 200°C may utilize
cooling water only where required for cooling of bearing oil, seal chambers, or seal flush liquid.
Pumps with non pressurized lubrication and pumping temperatures over 400°F or 200°C shall
be furnished with bearing housing water jackets. Water jacket connections shall be plugged
unless cooling is required.
I  2.1.29 Pump and auxiliaries shall be suitable for outdoor installation in the climatic zone specified.
2.2 PRESSURE CASINGS
I  2.2.3 If more than 1/8 in. (3 mm) corrosion allowance is required in cast iron and carbon steel casings,
it will be specified.
S 2.2.4 Components and sections of vertically suspended, multistage horizontal and double case
pumps including seal chambers which are normally subjected to suction pressure shall be designed
to permit, as a minimum, a hydrostatic test pressure equal to the casing maximum allowable
working pressure.
2.3 NOZZLE AND PRESSURE CASING CONNECTIONS

2.3.1 CASING OPENING SIZES


I  2.3.1.2 a. (Exception) Connections for the liquid barrier/buffer of dual seals shall be at least 3/4 in.
nominal pipe size regardless of pump size.
S b. Valved vent and drain connections shall be braced and supplied with threaded, non-seal
welded round head plugs per ANSI B16.11.

Acceptable Bracing Design for
Equipment Only Where Pipe Bend Necessary.

1. Gusseting material for welded gussets shall be of the same nominal chemistry as the
connected parts except that carbon steel may be used for gusseting P-1, P-3, P-4, and P-5
materials.
2. Connections shall be braced in two planes with gussets having a minimum thickness of
3/16 in. (5 mm), minimum width 3/4 in. (19 mm) as shown above.
  3. Gusset attachment welds to a pressure boundary shall be postweld heat treated
(PWHT) whenever: (1) PWHT is required for all welds, based on service conditions (see
2.11.3.7.4.4); (2) PWHT is required in the alloy steel component to which the attachment is
to be made, based on ASME B31.3 PWHT criteria for buttwelds in alloy steel materials
- whether or not buttwelds are used in the assembly.
 4. Proposals to use clamped or bolted gusset designs shall be submitted to Purchaser
for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
 5. Bracing design for piping connections requiring double block valves shall be
submitted to Purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
2.3.3 PRESSURE CASING CONNECTIONS
M 2.3.3.4 (Exception) Auxiliary connections less than NPS 1 (25 mm) to the seal gland shall be threaded.
R 2.3.3.7 a. (Exception) Tapped openings not connected to piping shall be plugged with round head plugs
furnished in accordance with the requirements of ANSI B16.11. The plugs shall meet the
material requirements of the casing. Plugs requiring removal for maintenance or operation
shall not be seal welded. Plugs NOT requiring removal shall be seal welded in
accordance with Par. 2.3.3.7b. Plastic plugs are not permitted.
b. Seal welding of all threaded plugs and connections shall be as follows:
1. Connections requiring seal welding shall be made up without the use of sealing
compounds or PTFE tape. All cutting oil used shall be removed prior to assembly. After
the joint has been tightened to full thread engagement, the seal welding shall cover all
exposed threads or 1/4 in. (6 mm) minimum.
2. Seal welding shall be done with electrodes not to exceed 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) in diameter,
using an amperage in the low range to avoid distortion of the connection or part being
welded.
R,M  2.3.3.10 a. (Exception) Drilled or tapped openings in the suction or discharge volutes or other high
velocity areas are not permitted if the specified corrosion allowance of the pump casing is
more than 1/8 in. (3 mm) or if the pump is in acid or erosive service. Suction and discharge
nozzles and seal chambers are not considered high velocity areas. Bosses for future casing
drain openings shall be provided.
I b. Connections for mechanical seal self-flushing lines shall be made on either: the suction or
discharge nozzle, or both; or the pump casing, if drilling and tapping of the casing is permitted.

I  c. Drain openings shall be plugged with round head plugs in accordance with ANSI B16.11
unless a valved drain is specified.
O d. All pumps in vacuum service shall have valved casing vents.
O e. All required vents shall be valved.
I f. Gate valves per IP 3-12-5 shall be used for vents and drains. The socket weld or seal weld at
the connection of extended body valves to fittings or the pump casing shall have a complete
bridge weld from fitting or casing to the body of the valve.
2.4 EXTERNAL NOZZLE FORCES AND MOMENTS
R 2.4.1 (Exception) Pumps with nozzles NPS 16 and smaller in size, with casings constructed of steel
or alloy steel shall be capable of satisfactory operation when subjected to forces and moments per
Par. F1.2 of Appendix F.
R,C  2.4.3 For pumps with casings constructed of materials other than steel or alloy steel and for pumps
with nozzles larger than 16 in., allowable nozzle loads shall be submitted to the Purchaser for
approval by the Owner's Engineer.
2.5 ROTORS
M 2.5.5 Where set screws or other methods for sleeve attachment are used which may cause upsetting
of the shaft and resultant difficulty in removal of the sleeve , the shaft shall be relieved in the area
of the set screw application a minimum of 1 mm (0.040 in.) diametral.
O,R 2.5.11 The shaft shall be designed to transmit momentarily at least four times the rated torque of the pump
driver.
2.6 WEAR RINGS AND RUNNING CLEARANCES
R,M   2.6.1 a. When specified, provision shall be made for flushing wear rings and throat bushings.
Flushed wear rings shall have a circumferential groove to provide distribution of flushing fluid.
The axial position of the groove shall be selected to provide equal flow to the high and low
pressure sides of the wear rings.
b. (Exception) Integral impeller wear surfaces must be approved by the Owner's Engineer.
2.7 MECHANICAL SHAFT SEALS
S 2.7.1 (Exception) Mechanical seals shall be furnished unless otherwise specified except for firewater
pumps which shall have packing.
R  2.7.2 (Exception) Unless otherwise specified, mechanical seals shall be in accordance with IP 10-1-3
instead of Pars. 2.7.3.1 through 2.7.3.23 for all hydrocarbon services regardless of Exposure
Class and all aqueous services regardless of Exposure Class except water below 150 F (65C)
with an Exposure Class of R4.
S 2.7.3.6 (Exception) In addition to the bolting, the allowable stress used to design all pressure containing
components except the seal faces shall not exceed the values for the material given in Section
VIII, Division 1 of the ASME code when a differential pressure equal to the rated discharge pressure
is applied to the component. An example would be the cartridge of a pressurized dual seal.
M  2.7.3.7 a. (Exception) Unless otherwise specified, seal plates shall be AISI 300 Series stainless steel for
all material classes listed in Table H-1.
O,R b. The rotating seal face for pumps operating above 3600 rpm shall not be silicon carbide
unless this is the vendor standard material.
R,M  c. Secondary sealing elements e.g., elastomers and gaskets, shall be selected based on the
maximum operating temperature specified.

O,R  2.7.3.19 a. (Exception) Unless specified otherwise, piping and instrumentation arrangements for
unpressurized dual seals shall be per IP 10-1-3, Figures 1 and 2A and for pressurized dual
seals per IP 10-1-3, Figure 3.
I b. When external flushing is specified, vendor shall advise Purchaser of the maximum
pressure existing at each injection port for the mechanical seal(s) and wear rings . Note:
The Purchaser will provide flushing liquid at not less than 25 psi (170 kPa) above the highest
injection port pressure.
R 2.7.3.24 Materials for self-flushing liquid coolers shall be per the following:

Cooling water shall be on the casing side. Tubing shall be a minimum of 3/4 in. nominal size with
minimum 0.065 in. (1.24 mm) wall thickness.
 2.8 DYNAMICS
2.8.3 VIBRATION
I 2.8.3.7 b. (Exception) Table 2.5 of API-610 shall apply to vertically suspended pumps.
2.9 BEARINGS AND BEARING HOUSINGS
2.9.1 BEARINGS
R  2.9.1.6 (Exception) Unless specified otherwise, cages for angular contact thrust bearings shall be of
machined bronze or brass.
2.9.2 BEARING HOUSINGS
R 2.9.2.4 Material for cooling coils shall be per ASTM B111 Alloy C44300, C44400, or C44500.
2.11 MATERIALS
2.11.1 GENERAL
R,M   2.11.1.1 a. (Exception) 12% Chrome castings shall be per ASTM A 487, Grade CA6NM.
b. Monel castings for general service shall be per ASTM A 494, Grade M-30C or M35-1 and shall
be tested for weldability per ASTM A 494 S.22.
2.11.3 WELDING
S  2.11.3.4.4 a. PWHT is required for all carbon and ferritic alloy steel pressure-containing components that are
welded and/or weld repaired, when the weldment is exposed to a process containing wet H2S.
The PWHT procedure outlined in the ASME Code Section VIII, par. UW40, UW49, UHA32, and
UCS 56 shall be followed, except that the notes in Tables UHA 32 and UCS 56 do not apply. All
welds, regardless of type or size, that are exposed to wet H2S shall be PWHT at a minimum
temperature of 1150F (620C). External attachments or seal welded threaded connections on
P-1 Group 1 and 2 materials do not require PWHT.
b. Pumps specified as handling alkaline solutions shall have PWHT per IP 18-4-1.
2.11.4 LOW TEMPERATURE
S   (Exception) Impact requirements shall be per IP 18-10-1 for the specified Critical Exposure
Temperature (CET).

SECTION 3 - ACCESSORIES
3.1 DRIVERS
I 3.1.1 Electric motor drivers shall be per IP 16-9-1 or IP 16-9-2, as applicable.
I 3.1.4 (Exception) Electric motor drivers shall be sized per IP 10-11-1.
R 3.1.8 (Exception) All motors for vertical pumps shall meet the shaft and base tolerances shown in Fig. 3-1.
I 3.1.9 a. (Exception) Steam turbine drivers shall be per IP 10-7-1.
b. (Exception) Steam turbine drivers shall be sized per IP 10-11-1.
I  3.1.10 (Exception) Unless otherwise specified, gears shall be per IP 10-10-2.
3.2 COUPLINGS AND GUARDS

R,M 3.2.2 a. Couplings shall be of steel, and of the non-lubricated disc type with stainless steel discs.
b. The minimum coupling service factor shall be 1.5.
M  3.2.12 When specified, the guard shall be furnished with a hinged door to provide access for inspection of
the flexible elements.
3.3 BASEPLATES
R,M 3.3.3 (Exception) All mounting pads shall be machined flat and parallel. Centers of mounting pads shall
be at the correct relative elevation within 0.002 in. per foot (150 micrometers per meter) of
separation between any pads. Additionally, each pad shall be level in all directions within 0.0005
in. per foot (40 micrometers per meter). These requirements shall be met with the baseplate
supported at the foundation bolt hole locations when the baseplate is also clamped at the
foundation bolt hole locations AND when the baseplate is NOT clamped at any point.
R,M 3.3.4 All shims shall straddle hold down bolts.
M 3.3.9 (Exception) Baseplate grouting holes shall be accessible without moving the machinery.
R,M 3.3.14 Horizontal alignment screws shall be furnished on all base plates.
I 3.4 INSTRUMENTATION
 (Exception) When seals are specified NOT to be per IP 10-1-3, instrumentation shall be per Pars.
3.4.1 and 3.4.2.
3.5 PIPING AND APPURTENANCES
O,R 3.5.1 GENERAL
a. (Exception) When seals are specified NOT to be per IP 10-1-3 (See 2.7.2), piping and
appurtenances shall be per Pars. 3.5.1.1 through 3.5.4.4.
b. (Exception) Table 3 - 4 Note a - Schedule 160 for diameters NPS 3/4 and smaller, Schedule 80
for diameters NPS 1 to 1-1/2, Schedule 40 for diameters of NPS 2 and larger.
R,M 3.5.1.1 (Exception) Unless specified otherwise, auxiliary process fluid lines over NPS 1 shall be piping in
accordance with the requirements of Table 3 - 4. Auxiliary process fluid service in the
Flammable/Toxic classification, sizes NPS 1 and smaller shall be as follows:
a. Lines which connect directly between the seal gland(s) and any point on the pump casing
or flanges shall be seamless tubing in accordance with the requirements of Table 3 - 4,
Auxiliary Process fluid Nonflammable/Nontoxic class. An example is API flush plan 11.
b. Lines which connect directly between the seal gland(s) and any point not on the pump
casing or pump flanges and all lines not connected to the seal gland at all shall be
seamless piping per Table 3 - 4 with the exception of barrier and buffer fluid lines per Par.
3.5.1.1c. Examples are API flush plan 21 and 23 arrangements.
c. (Exception) Lines connecting the barrier or buffer fluid reservoir to the seal gland(s) or
seal chamber connection shall be a minimum of 3/4 in., 0.065 wall seamless tubing meeting
the material requirements of Table 3 - 4 for tubing.
R 3.5.1.9 a. All threaded connections shall be made up without the use of thread compounds or PTFE
tape and shall be seal welded except the following:
1. Instruments downstream of valved take-off connections.
2. Thermowells and other instruments requiring removal for maintenance.
3. Valve outlets which are plugged or capped (see Par. 2.3.1.2b).
4. Seal gland connections.
5. Tubing fittings.
6. Ring threads of pipe unions.
7. Cast or nodular iron casings.
b. Seal welding shall be done in accordance with IP 10-1-1 Par. 2.3.3.7.

3.5.2 AUXILIARY PROCESS FLUID PIPING


O,M  3.5.2.2 (Exception) Piping supplying external flushing liquid to pump mechanical seals or wear rings
shall be provided with the following features as a minimum, to be furnished by Purchaser or vendor,
as specified and meeting the pump casing pressure and temperature capability:
a. Separate hand control valve and flow indicator for flow regulation to each seal chamber and
close clearance injection point, with the valve located downstream from the indicator.
S b. Flow indicators shall be rated for the pressure and temperature of the pump casing as a
minimum.
c. Block valve in each supply lateral upstream from the flow regulation devices.
d. Check valve in each supply lateral downstream from the flow regulation and flow indicating
devices.
S  3.5.2.3 Auxiliary process piping shall be provided with a minimum corrosion allowance of 0.050 in. (1.3
mm) unless otherwise specified.
M 3.5.2.7 All orifice plates shall have a tab extending from the union or flange where they are installed to
indicate their location. The tab shall be stamped with the orifice size.
R,M 3.5.2.10.1 Unions shall not be used in hydrocarbon (including nonflammable/nontoxic and lubricating oil) or
steam services.

SECTION 4 - INSPECTION, TESTING, AND PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT


4.2 INSPECTION
O,R 4.2.1.4 Inspection shall include: verification of the equipment dimensions, compliance with baseplate
machining tolerances after all machining steps, examination of test data and checking preparation for
shipment. For services with pumping temperatures 500°F (260°C) or higher, the Inspector shall
verify that the internal clearances conform with those given in Par. 2.6.4.
4.2.2 MATERIAL INSPECTION
R 4.2.2.1 Final acceptance testing of parts requiring magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic or
ultrasonic examination shall be made after all machining has been completed.
4.3 TESTING
4.3.1 GENERAL
R 4.3.1.1 As a minimum, inspection and testing of all pumps shall be conducted according to the
following:

Notes:
(1) If the NPSH required by the pump differs from the specified available NPSH by 3 ft (1.0 m) or less, an
NPSH suppression and performance test is required.
(2) Performance tests shall be witnessed if:
(a) The manufacturing facility has no previous experience with the pump.
(b) The manufacturer has made significant changes to standard designs in critical areas such
as hydraulic balance and shaft sealing.
(3) Each pump receiving a witnessed performance test shall be dismantled by the manufacturer for
inspection by the Inspector following the final performance test, inspection shall include bearings and
housings.
(4) Hydrostatic tests shall be witnessed for all high alloy castings (e.g., 300 series S. S., Incolloy, Inconel,
and Monel).
4.3.2 HYDROSTATIC TESTS
I 4.3.2.1 a. (Exception) Sections and components of vertically suspended, multistage horizontal and double
casing pumps designed in accordance with Par. 2.2.4 shall have hydrostatic test pressure at
least equal to casing maximum allowable working pressure.

S b. Mechanical seal flushing liquid coolers shall be hydrostatically tested to at least the same
pressure as the pump casing.
R g. Hydrostatic testing, whether on a component basis or assembled pump, shall be done after all
machining and welding (such as piping connections, drain, vents, seal welding) has been
completed and all plugs installed.
4.3.3 PERFORMANCE TEST
R 4.3.3.1.1 a. Seal chamber pressure shall be measured at each point during the pump performance test.
b. Vendor shall ensure that measured seal chamber pressures when corrected for rated suction
pressure and specific gravity are consistent with those assumed in designing the mechanical
seal. In addition, the suitability of the seal maximum dynamic pressure rating shall be
confirmed.
 c. Corrective steps needed to improve seal design or seal chamber operating conditions shall
be submitted to the Purchaser for approval by the Owner's Engineer.
d. If a tight shutoff auxiliary containment seal is used, the cavity between the main and
auxiliary seals shall be vented during testing to confirm the acceptable operation of the main
seal.
O,R 4.3.3.2.1 All pumps shall be operated for at least one hour at rated capacity. One of the data points
shall be the rated point.
S 4.3.3.3.3 (Exception) In no case shall the minus tolerance allowance for shutoff head exceed 2%. The
shutoff head with the positive tolerance allowance included shall not exceed 120% of the head at
rated capacity unless previously approved by the Owner's Engineer (see Par. 2.1.11b).
R 4.3.3.4.4 If the Purchaser's driver is used for the performance test it shall not be operated above nameplate
power.
4.3.4 OPTIONAL TESTS
4.3.4.1 NPSHR TEST
O,R 4.3.4.1.1 a. NPSHR test shall be performed if the NPSH required by the pump differs from the
specified available NPSH by 3 ft (1.0 m) or less. See Par. 4.3.1.1.
b. A vacuum tank suppression test is required unless suction valve throttling has been
approved by the Owner's Engineer.
4.4 PREPARATION FOR SHIPMENT
R  4.4.3.3 (Exception) Painting of unmachined exterior surfaces for corrosive chemical or marine
atmospheres will be specified.

R,O 5.2.6.2 b. Materials of construction for coolers in fresh water cooling service shall be carbon steel
with admiralty metal tubes and brass tubesheets. Materials for salt water cooling shall be as
follows:

5.3.7 ACCESSORIES
5.3.7.1 DRIVERS
5.3.7.1.2 (Exception) Backstopping devices and non-reversing ratchets are not required on vertical pumps.
R,M 5.3.7.1.3 For vertical pumps, the vendor shall assemble and dowel motor or gear to the pump in its
shop to assure proper unit fit-up and shaft mating.

SECTION 6 - VENDOR'S DATA

6.2.3 TECHNICAL DATA
p. Wear ring clearances and diameters of proposed pumps for pumping temperature 500°F
(260°C) or higher.
q. Design details of all coolers.
r. Minimum corrosion allowance provided in the pump casing.
 s. For pumps rated over 500 hp (375 kW), for pumps handling cold liquids at -50°F (-45°C) or
lower and for pumps with a discharge pressure of 500 psig (35 barg) or higher, include proof
of compliance with Par. 1.1.1.d.
v. Vendor's proposal shall specify the maximum dynamic and static pressure ratings of the
mechanical seal.
I 6.2.4 CURVES
Quoted efficiency and power shall include the effect of increased clearances for hot pumps.
6.3 CONTRACT DATA
I 6.3.2 DRAWINGS
a. A parts list/bills of materials shall be furnished for all equipment supplied, and shall include
pattern, stock, or production drawing numbers and materials of construction. The list shall
completely identify each part so that the Purchaser may determine part interchangeability with
other equipment furnished by the same manufacturer. Anti-friction bearings and other standard
purchased items shall be identified by the original manufacturer's number.
b. Cross sectional dimensioned drawings of the seal chamber, seal, gland, shaft sleeve and
proposed flushing arrangement for the mechanical seal and system furnished shall be provided.
