The project intends to study and analyse a number of konstruktionesbränder in different types of buildings using a method

The smoke (smoke gases) are often the primary obstruction to evacuation of people in buildings at fire. Today several
methods exist to prevent fire gases to spread via ventilation systems in buildings. Examples of these fire dampers or fans in

low ventilators in a way that the nearby fire cells are not affected without use of throttles.

Development and validation of simple and

practical models for the calculation of
smoke temperature in rooms/fire cells.

The aim of the project is to investigate the needs of potential users of the evacuation sites in an emergency situation, as e.g.
what information is being requested. Furthermore, the aim is to use this new knowledge about the needs and evaluate
possible designs using Virtual Reality with a representative population, i.e. persons with disabilities. The goal is to develop

Monitoring and analysis of fire protection This project aims to evaluate methods to study how fire safety of buildings has developed in the society. The methods will
be used to monitor the fire protection is changing and how effective different instruments are. Instruments like e.g. rules,

The purpose of the project is to create a method and develope a policy to dimension beams for local fires and to provide a

but needs to be examined and validated against trials and be based on scientific principles.

The effect of room geometry on fire gas The main objective of the project is to develop knowledge on how certain room geometries effect fire gas spread within a

SPEK, The Finnish National

Rescue Association

Project gathers and analyses information from a citizen’s point of view about the factors increasing or decreasing Finnish
people’s sense of security and on the other hand from a societal point of view how security is produced and governed. The
State of Societal Security in Finland aim is to see how people and communities have prepared themselves for different threats. The project also provides
information on people’s trust towards society, political decision-making, authorities and other service providers.

The aim of the project is to map out current issues in emergency planning and find ways to improve the effeiciency of
planning. The project is conducted through expert interviews who are working on emergency planning (rescue services,
businesses, property managers) and through mapping out experiences of homeowners' associations. Project partners are
Helsinki City Rescue Department, The Finnish Real Estate Management Federation and The Finnish Real Estate Federation.

Residential Emergency Planning

The project focuses on household preparedness, attitudes towards preparedness and safety skills. The aim is on household
preparedness in disruptions, e.g. power cuts or pandemics. The results of the project will be taken into the development of
societal preparedness and preparedness training. Project partners are The Committee for Home Emergency Preparedness
(KOVA) and The National Emergency Supply Agency.
Household Preparedness in Finland

The aim of the project is to promote disabled people’s fire safety in Finland by researching the current practices relating to
exit safety as well as the needs and differences of exit safety from the viewpoint of different disabilities. When it comes to
exit safety for disabled people, smart services including different digital solutions provide options for their various
multisensory needs. In the project these solutions are tested for improved exit safety for disabled people.

Emergency Services College has added the use of artificial smoke in the simulating education. In the latest simulator, the
smoke is glycol-based artificial smoke. In other simulators other artificial smoke (BRANDAX) and normal smoke are used.
Information is needed for the combined effect of fine particles and carbon dioxide in the fire fighting. Occupational Health
Institute analyses the contents of the artificial smoke. Occupational Health Institute measures the chemical concentrations
Exposure to artificial smoke of the smoke produced by the glycol-based smoke machine. Field measurements are made for the teachers as lung and
vascular response before and after exposure, and the next morning. Their exposure to glycol-based artificial smoke, to
BRANDAX-smoke and to normal smoke are measured. In addition, teachers lung and vascular responses are measured in the
laboratory tests as their exposure to two different artificial smoke in two different concentrations.
