Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The movie is engaging for students.
Representation: Use images and audio.
Action and Expression: Have students create their own video, comparing their life to Native American life.

Lesson idea implementation: This movie would be used to introduce a lesson. The teacher will tell the
students that they are going to start learning about the way Native Americans live. Teacher will then play the
I-movie video for the class. After the video is played the class will discuss similarities and differences between
our lives and the Native Americans. The teacher will then go over different characteristics of the Native
Americans culture while students take notes.
The class will be asked to write a paper about what a day in the life of a Native American would be like.
Students can refer to the notes they took during the video. The students will have about 30 minutes to
complete this. To close the lesson, students will be given an opportunity to share their work, because
students learning will be reinforced by listening to their classmates. Students will be assessed by their papers.
Papers will be returned after grading with feedback from teacher. Learning could be differentiated by
allowing students to work in partners, providing sentence stems, and allowing students to type or write their
paper.

Importance of technology: Using the technology to introduce the unit is a great way to hook the students in
to the lesson. The lesson could be completed without technology but would not be as engaging. If class
ipads were available they could be used to allow students to create their own imovie.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: An issue that could arise with this is using images that aren’t labeled
for reuse. I would minimize this risk by using the tool on google images that only pulls up images that are
labeled for reuse.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson, I feel that the activities could positively impact student
learning. I like the visuals in the video and feel like they allow students to see just how different the culture
of Native Americans was from our current culture. I did design the lesson as an introduction the unit. To
further extend the lesson, students could create their own imovie. To further extend the lesson, I could
bring in replicas of Native American clothing, tools, etc. My field experience teacher did this and the
students enjoyed it a lot.
