Medication Administration

Procedure

School Nurse will provide training, support to designated personnel to ensure medication is
dispensed in compliance with Education Code, Physician orders and Board Policy.

School Nurse or trained designee will provide supervision to students requiring medication
within the school day. Supervision will include determining Right student, Right medication,
Right time, Right dose, and Right route.

Role of UAP is to
• Accept delivery of medication orders and medication from
student/parent/guardian
• Ensure that medication order is complete and signed by MD
• If controlled substance complete controlled substance administration record
with parent/guardian (follow instructions on form)
• Obtain appropriate signatures on medication form
• Scan copies of all medication orders to School Nurse
• Assist with dispensing medication as per care plan and/or order. Supervision
will include determining Right student, Right medication, Right time, Right dose,
and Right route
• Document all medication dispensed to student on appropriate form located in
Health Clerk Binder as well as Health Services Procedure Manuel
• Maintain student confidentiality
• Contact family when medication supply low

Role of School Nurse is to

• Supervise designated personnel to ensure student received prescribed
medication as ordered
• Review all medication orders
• Clarify questions with physician as appropriate
• Communicate with parent/guarjtudent and staff as needed

• Train designated personnel in medication administration procedure

• Document training with staff on Medication Training Attendance form found in -

Health Services Procedure Manuel

• In the event of medication error complete Medication Error Report form found in
Health Services Procedure Manuel
